since the last upgrade SQL 2000 --> 2005, the biggest database I am working on (1.4 GB, with loads of binary data) keeps freezin at least one time per week. When I say 'freezin' I mean that you cannot query some of the tables as it gives a timeout error when trying.
I am not a DBA and I don't have any idea of what to do, the only thing which comes to my mind is that this database is too big, as if I go to the preperties window it says Space Available: 38 MB (what's that? there's really only 38 MB on this DB?).
I tried re-writing all mainteinment plans (full backup every night, log backup every hour), but I realized that the database keeps freezing (and the backup jobs keep running untill you stop them).
Hi, I am running a stored procedure that collects some records from two tables do some calculations with those records and insert those calculation result in a temp. table. I am calling this stored procedure in my aspx page and then later select all the records from temp table and show it in a table. When I run this application on browser it give me Timeout expired error but whn I execute the stored procedure it runs properly but takes around 3:10 mins to execute in query analyzer. I did some google work and based on that I specified CommandTimeout = 300 for SP and Connection timeout=400 in web.config. But still it didnt worked. Sometimes it runs properly but sometimes its not. Hi,I get this error from our web application every once in a while. " Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding". I email myself when an error occurs, and once every 2-3 days I get this timeout error emails, like 5-10 emails in a span of few minutes. Then it goes away. I have set the command timeout for 60 secs. It doesn't happen from the same stored procedure, actually I have seen it timeout from really simple 1 or 2 line stored procedures, which shouldn't normally take 1 sec. Its like sql server just shuts down for few minutes. We have some backups and maintenance jobs scheduled, but they run only after midnight. I have checked the application event viewer, there are no warnings or error messages for MSSQLSERVER. Can any one tell me how to check whats going on during that short timespan when timeout error occurs, and what causes it? I don't want to run sql profiler continuously for 2-3 days, I am afraid it will slow down the server more. Thanks.
I have a quick question regarding getting data from a SQL database but I am slightly confused as to the best way to handle it.
Basically on of the projects I am working on I need to send data to another company, there are several calls required to the database to bring back various options for changing the questions asked on the front end.
Up to now all that has happened is there has been a mutual agreement between myself and this other company and they have just had access to the database to call a series of stored procs which I have written for them to access the data. Recently however the situation has changed and my client wants me stop them accessing the database however they still need to recieve the information from the database they recieve now.
What will be the best way to handle this? My knowledge of SQL is farily limited presently and I am only ust getting into learning a lot more about it.

I have imported a DTS package to sql 2005. I am trying to run this DTS package from the JOB using DTSRun. and i am getting the following error. I thought it was some issue with the SQL Agent serivice account which this is running, i have created a proxy which has super privilages.. but still the job is failing. We have a table of students with fields for the ID of the school district and their school name. For example:

I want is a listing with the school district ID, the student name, and the number of schools in the district.
I believe the following statement should give me what I want:
SELECT DistrictID, StudentName, COUNT(DISTINCT SchoolName) OVER (PARTITION BY DistrictID)
FROM StudentData
However, I get the error:

Incorrect syntax near 'distinct'.
If I take out the DISTINCT it runs fine, however it counts all the rows as expected, which is not what I want. If I remove the OVER clause it runs fine, however, it counds the schools across all the districts, which is not what I want. I can remove the OVER clause and use GROUP BY, but not while also retrieving StudentName.

When I try to manually run one of my scheduled job, DR. Watson comes up and SQL Server crashes. the following error message is received in the NT event log. "Unable to read local Event log, reason the data area passed to a system call is too small". I am new to SQL and this is causing me some degree of stress!!!! I am using ActiveX Script tasks to branch out on the different tasks that I have within the DTS. When I want a particular branch of tasks not to be executed, I give a "Main = DTSStepScriptResult_DontExecuteTask"
This seems to be working fine in terms of functionality, but there is an error that is displayed saying "Task reported failure on execution".
How do I get rid of this? I need to exit the task, and still just get one message box at the end of it all that happily reads "Succesfully completed tasks"
I have one drop and create procedure script in one sql session and execute the procedure in other session. Now when i am compiling the procedure in first session, it gets completed successfully.
Now when i move to other session and try to execute the procedure, it gives me error saying :
"Invalid column name 'ColumnName'."
Now when I execute the procedure in same session in which procedure was compiled, it runs successfully. Once run, I go back to my other session and it runs again.

Cannot create a row of size 8125 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060. The table as many varchar(max) columns such as _92284, and many are populated with around 1000 bytes of data. Everything I'm reading tells me SQL 2005 supports large row sizes. But why is this error still coming up.
Other usage info: These numbered columns (i.e. _92284) are dropped, added, and repopulated with data every night.
I am working on a SSIS solution that has 4 packages. All 4 have run before and I have not modified any of them, however I keep getting the error message and it keeps locking up on one of my packages. Does anyone have any advice or a remedy for this?
I am trying to access a .Net assembly in script component, which internally uses Microsoft Enterpise library dll's.
The problem I am facing is when I copy the config sections needed for the Enterprise library from web.config to dtsdebughost.exe.config file and run the package, It ends in failure with below message "Error: The script files failed to load."
I'm working in a team, and need to share a database between the group - we don't have the luxury of sharing a server and connecting to it.
So What we'd like to do is make a copy of the database schema, and then share that through our repository.
I figured I just need to copy the .mdf file from the sql server database folder, and put it in the visual studio directory to work on it?
So I've tried this, but when I try to create a TableAdapter to the database through visual studio, It gives me an "access denied". I figure this is probably something to do with security settings?
Do you think I'll need to change my Database connection from windows authentication to sql authentication?

I've a report whose columns are returned from a stored procedure. Now I want to display the report based on a date range. The date field is Received. It's in dbo.master. I have an OLEDB command in my package that has to execute some SQL script. But when I declare and set a variable at the top of all code, The OLEDB gives an error in column mappings tab.

I am getting some problem in using group in sql server login.
i have two NT groups in windows.i) developer and tester
I added a user Lalit in both gruop. I want to give db_owner permission on a particular database(Employee) to developer group and data_denyreader and deny_writer on same database(Employee) to tester group.
Now when i logging in to sql server using Lalit(windows authentication) iam not able to access the database(Employee).
Now my concern is that Lalit should have full access to the employee database when entered as developer user and limited access to employee database when entered as tester user.
Sorry for the simple question, but I'm not having any luck getting this to work: I need to give someone read-only access to everything in a database.
If someone could help me by giving me (or linking me to) a step-by-step, idiot-proof recipe for giving Bob in my office read-only access to the whole database, I'd be very grateful. And remember: I'm good at db programming, but completely ignorant on the subject of db admin.

I've received this error twice over 2 days in the SQL Agent error log during off-hours from a server which has not had any changes to it in the last few months (once at 3:32AM and the next day at 3:46AM. I've been able to tie it to log-shipping backup jobs (all of which run under the SQL Service domain account) which run every minute. It seems to be only momentary, as the next attempt a minute later is successful.
I get the same set of messages for each database for the same time which look like this:

I can't find any documentation on these errors on the web or MSDN site. Can I chalk this up to possibly "winking" connection to our domain controller? We've never had these messages before, and our LAN department swears that there have been no upgrades to the network or domain controller servers recently.
We have several large government web sites that we help look after. We recently migrated one of them from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 and are having a problem with our nightly email job in that if it runs for more than an hour then after exactly 1 hour the email job gets a "Timeout expired" message back from SQL Server.
Our batch jobs do run on a different server and connect remotely to our SQL Server DB. I did change the connections - remote query timeout and increased it 10 fold, but this didn't make any difference. Is there any other parameter that may be causing the Timeout expired error after exactly 1 hour?
