Database Name With Point In It (mail.archive.mdf) Not Recognised In Query Analyser Of SQL 2000
Jun 21, 2006
Apparently the query analyser of sql server does not recognise a
database with a point in it, like
mail.archive.mdf
I receive the following error when I use it:
Server: Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'mail'. No entry
found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
Please help, thanks

ISTR QA running in 7.0 would return print statements and messages as thequery ran (well, after a "GO" statement anyway). In 2000 it doesn't returnany messages until after the entire query batch has completed. In wanting tokeep an eye on progress on long batches, how can I make 2000 work more like7.0 in this respect?

Hi,
We are currently trying to get to grips with SQL Server 2005, and have a basic question. Is it possible to user Query Analyser from SQL 2000 with 2005? All our support staff use Query Analyser on a day to ay basis and all our clients are currently on SQL Server 2000. It would be usefull if when new customers come on line with 2005 our staff can use one tool to perform their tasks
We've tried to run Query Anayser and it's comming up with a connection error, this may be down to us not setting some access up or not connecting correctly.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Hello all,
First off, I appreciate the time that those of you reading and responding to this request are offering. My quesiton is a theoretical and hopefully simple one, and yet I have been unable to find an answer to it on other searches or sources.
Here's the situation. I am working with SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I have a series of databases, all of which are in Full recovery mode, using a backup device for the full database backups and a separate device for the log backups. The full backups are run every four days during non-business hours. The log backups are run every half hour.
Last week, one of my coworkers found that some rarely-used data was unavailable, and wanted to restore a database to a point in time where the data was available. He told me that point in time was some time back in November.
To accomplish this, I restored the database (in a separate database, as to not overwrite my production database) using the Point in Time Recovery option. I selected November from the "To a point in time" window (I should note that this window is always grey, never white like most active windows, it seems), and the full database backup and the subsequent logs all became available in the "Select the backup sets to restore" window.
I then tried a bevy of different options from the "Options" screen. However, every restore succeeds (ie: it doesn't error out), but seems to be bringing the database back to a current point in time. It's never actually going back to the point in time I specify.
My questions are as follows:
a) Is it possible to do a point in time recovery to a point in time BEFORE the last full database backup?
b) If so, what options would you recommend I use? (ie: "Overwrite the existing database", restore with recovery, etc etc).
I again appreciate any and all advice I receive, and I look forward to hearing from anyone and everyone on this topic. Thank you.
Ryan

Hello everybody,
I'm developing a report using the following structure :
declare @sql as nvarchar(4000)
declare @where as nvarchar(2000)
set @sql = 'select ....'
If <conditional1>
begin
set @where = 'some where'
end
If <conditional2>
begin
set @where = 'some where'
end
set @sql = @sql + @where
exec(@sql)
I run it in query analyser and works fine, but when I try to run in Reporting Services, Visual studio stops responding and the cpu reaches 100 %.
I realize that when I cut off the if clauses, then it works at Reporting services.
Does anybody know what is happening?
Why the query works in query analyser and doesn't work in Reporting Service ?
Thanks,
MaurÃcio

Hi
This what i did , since i need to maintain
five sql servers ,i thought i will build a repository
so on my desk top (running sql server ) i created a
table name master_dbscript with the following fields
server_name varchar(20),
dbname varchar(20)
db_create_scripts text
using enterprise manager-- all tasks --generate sql scripts , (cut & paste
to the insert statement in query analyser, the following is the insert statement
insert into master_dbscript values ('isd11t','test','ALTER TABLE [dbo].[child] DROP CONSTRAINT FK_child_parent GO /****** Object: Trigger dbo.test_patcase Script Date: 25/08/2000 12:10:09 ******/ if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[test_patcase]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsTrigger') = 1)drop trigger [dbo].[test_patcase] GO ')
oops it created all the objects in the database where i tried to run the
insert statement. god saved me , i tried this with the test database.
when i tried the same with bcp it worked fine and i was able to see the
record in my table (one record) ,note you cannot use dts because it will support maximum 8000 chars only .
what is the problem with the query analyser ?

I noticed that query analyser is much more quicker than EManager when I access my database from my hosting provider... is there any way to see the properties of the table X for example as one can do with EM...
I would be grateful if you could provide me with any query sample conserning this issue...
Thanks

Hi,
I am studying SQL Server by myself (I am a Sybase DBA) and I have a little problem with the Query Analyser.
I actually have 2 server in my PC (XP) and I can see them via SQL Server Enterprise Manager, I also can open Query Analyser for these two server via Enterprise Manager.
When I try to launch SQL Query Analyser from the start menu, I can't see any of my two server and can't chose a connection.
Do I need to write some parameter somewhere?
It's not a big problem as I can work via Enterprise Manager but I just want to know.
Thank you for your response.

I have a strange problem running a stored proc in SQL 2000. The proc returns XML and I'm using ADO to call the proc and return the data as a stream. When I call the proc through ADO, it times out because it is taking 40 seconds to run and my command timeout is set to 30. I can increase this no problem but the strange thing is that when I run the same proc from within query analyser, it completes in under a second.
I put profiler on it tracing the command start and finish events and it's definitely taking 40 seconds between start and finish. The proc is used with various input parameters and the timeout is only occurring for some combinations of inputs, but it always seems to take much longer than it does when run from query analyser.
Can anyone suggest what might be causing the delay, or where I might look to find the problem?
Thanks...

I want to replicate to an archive database. This means that the subscriber will have data that has been removed from the publisher. In my reading, I haven't seen any discussion of this specific scenario.
Here's what I imagine the solution might be:
EXEC sp_addpublication_snapshot
@publication = N'My_Publication',
@frequency_type = 1 -- only create the snapshot once
GO
...
EXEC sp_addarticle
@publication = N'My_Publication',
@article = N'My_Table',
@source_owner = N'dbo',
@source_object = N'My_Table',
@del_cmd = 'NONE',
GO
I set the publication snapshot to only execute once, that would be during the maintenance window when it is initially installed. Then, on the tables that will contain archived data, I specify that deletes aren't replicated.
Here's my concern: aren't there times when you need to resync?
If you could push a new snapshot that dropped the tables on the subscriber and built the thing up from scratch, then things would sync-up just fine. But in this scenario if you drop the subscriber tables then you've just lost your archive.
What's the best way to handle this?
Thanks,
