Database Prompts In SSRS Cannot Be Deselected
Oct 15, 2007
Hi,
Suppose I have two prompts, say A and B.
These two prompts are populated by using database queries.
B is dependent on A.
These prompts are multiselect.
I have noticed that it is not possible to deselect them once a value(s) are selected.
If I deselect all in A. They automatically get selected again.
They work fine as long as some value selected.
It is possible however to deselect all in B.
Thanks in advance.

This question is for Bill directly. Hi Bill, I have lots of experience with RS, implementing the beta in a production environment, I was so impressed. Currently my company uses Cognos for financial reporting, and I am hoping to replace this with RS and MSAS. I have little knowledge of MDX, so I have been using your various series of articles to get up to speed. However, I don't get the article Mastering OLAP Reporting: Cascading Prompts. I fully understand how to build the prompts, but there seems to be a step missing in the article. You never replace the hardcoded where clause in the base dataset, and I can't seem to work out how to pass the parameter from the cascading prompts to the report. Maybe I'm being stupid, but the article doesn't seem to tell us how to do that.
Many Thanks

Hi guys
I have been asked to develop a query which when run will prompt the user to enter the number of months before runnin the query.
I know we can do this in MS Acess .
can we do the similar sort of thing in SQL as well??
My query is
SELECT DHBMappingTable.[DHB Name], Agency.DHB_service, PurchaseUnitMappingTable.PU, PurchaseUnitMappingTable.PU_name,
SUM([NMDS Data for IDF Report].[Number of caseweighted discharges]) AS Expr1, AVG(wies2.[0607_cwd_WIES11]) AS Expr2,
AdmissionMappingTable.Admission, wies2.Admission_type
FROM DomicileCodes
In the above query, I need to multiply "0607_cwd_WIES11" with the no. of months
Lets say if the user is being prompted to enter the no of months and he enters 3, then "0607_cwd_WIES11" should be multiplied by 3 and divided by 12.
Do i have to use stored procedures(which I have got no knowledge of)
What do I have to do??
Pls help
Thanks

I would like to set up a prompt / filter as part of the model that carries through to the report builder. I have a query where I would like to force a prompt on the user as part of any report they create. Ideally, I would like to have it default as well.
I noticed that there is a prompt attribute in model designer. When I go to add the filter attribute in model designer, I get the same dialog box I get in the report builder - except it does not have the prompt as an option. Is there a way to accomplish this?
Thanks

Hello everyone,
I have a request to hide certain parameters in a report based on the current user logged into our web based report viewer using the ReportViewer control fo asp.net.
I am doing the standard stuff required to display the report as shown below.
Code Snippet
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = new Uri("http://172.17.144.26/ReportServer"); // new Uri(MINETSecurity.WebSettings.WebServerPath, UriKind.Absolute);
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportPath = ReportName;
rptViewer.ServerReport.DisplayName = "Report1";
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerCredentials = new CustomReportCredentials("myUsername", "myPassword", "myDomain");
Now that i have loaded the report into the viewer i illiterate through the report parameters looking for the ones which the specified user should not see as show below.
Code Snippet
ReportParameterInfoCollection MyReportParams = rptViewer.ServerReport.GetParameters();
foreach (ReportParameterInfo MyParameter in MyReportParams)
{
// returns a value from a custom class which is a predefined value for this user based on the current user logged into the website
string Value = CustomParameterValues.ToString(GlobalUserSettings.CurrentUser.CustomValueList);
if(Value != "") MyParameter.PromptUser = false;
}
Here is where the promblem lies, when i try to set the value of PromptUser i get the following compiler error.
Property or indexer 'Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportParameterInfo.PromptUser' cannot be assigned to -- its is read only
Is there anything i can do to set certain parameters invisible to the user and set there value myself. I know i could create 2 seperate reports and set the PromptUser value in the designer but i dont really want to be duplicating reports just to hide or show parameters.
I have tried using the SetParameters method of the ReportViewer component to pass the value of the parameters that should be hidden and even set the visible property to false, but it dosn't seem to work.
Any help here would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hello,
We want to have one prompt (parameter) to set a point in time, so we can use this parameter as filter in other elements.
e.g. We have a point in time prompt, that we can set and use to filter by examples illness records and availability record (by the same (one) prompt)

I am running a report which takes a long time to render. It has 500K rows in it that need to be summed and grouped. After 5 minutes IE prompts for a password. I set the report time out to 15 min just to see if it would make a difference. I even set the IIS timeout to an to 15 min as well.
I know that its bad to run a report this big, but I'm just curious why it prompts for a password. In case a user runs the report. Report uses dates so its possible they could go way back and not realize its 500K rows. I am assuming it is an IE issue with the browser and found a registry edit, but I don't really want to edit registries on my users' computers.

Hello -
I dont know something weired happened on our MSSQL server today. We are able to connect to any Databases from Enterprise Manager from a Remote server.
Once we logged in and connected to a database on my database server, it keep prompting for the user id and password as we browsing through different tables in that database?
(Right click on the table then select Open Table -> Return all rows -> and it prompts for password )
Now when we enter password the contents of Table are displayed and now when we try to see contents of another table in the database it again prompts for password.
Any Idea whats wrong? How this can be resolved as it was not happening before .. :(

I have an encrypted database in server A. The reporting service is running on server B. I deployed all my reports to Server B. When I run the reports, I got the following message:
The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key that is used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database.
I googled the problem, some said to backup the key, but when I opened the reporting service configuration tool to backup the encrypted, it said I needed to restore the key first. Some said I need to delete the key, but that defeated the purpose of an encrypted database.

Hello everyone,
Greetings! I just found this group after wasting hours trying to make
SSRS work with databases that are already created (that is, the DBA
created two empty databases for me, X and XTempDB).
I keep getting "this connection string is invalid can't use this to
connect to SQL Server" in the Database Setup tab.
The problem is that to create its own database, SSRS needs dbcreator
and securityadmin roles (please correct me if I'm wrong here). And I'm
having a helluva problem trying to convince the DBA to give me
temporary dbcreator and securityadmin roles!
Is there any document or
something that I can use to convince him that SSRS will not do
anything like recreating the login (because he said that the login has
already existed and has its role set up in many other databases)?
Any help, pointers, suggestions, etc. is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ray

Hi
In my current project we are dealing with a lot if Infopath forms of all sizes and complexities. currently they are being saved in Forms library of sharepoint.
We need to build a warehouse for SSRS which receives data either from content database or from infopath forms submit with minimum latency.
I thought of few alternatives, but, not sure which is most robust and economical.
1. Built c# classes to parse XML of infopath forms and then push data to SQL using ADO.net and SQL stored procedure while item is being added (ItemAdding) to Forms Library.
2. Use CAML queries to extract XML from forms library and then continue with C#/ADO/SQL..
3. Use SSIS APIs and webservices to massage XML and put it to SQL at ItemAdding event
4. Use CAML queries to generate XML files and stage it to FTP and rest will be done on SSIS.
I am currently looking for feseability information based of Besy Known Practise. Please feel free to suggest a totally new approach, if available.
Thanks

Following upgrade to SSRS2005, Reporting Services worked EXCEPT from within applications or from scheduled jobs. Running reports from application-generated URL€™s produced the following error: €˜An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details€™. These same reports, however, ran perfectly from within SSRS. After running them once from Reporting Services, they subsequently run without problem when called by applications or jobs.
Examples of these errors include the following (stack traces available if needed):
ReportingServicesService!runningjobs!13!5/27/2007-01:57:23:: i INFO: Adding: 1 running jobs to the database

Log entries below correspond to the following attempts to run a specific report.
ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 9:43:37 AM rsInternalError
(one of many user attempts to run from app after upgrade)
ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 10:50:57 AM rsSuccess
(first successful run after upgrade; run from within SSRS)
ENF_Comprehensive_Report 5/31/2007 11:09:59 AM rsSuccess
(first successful run by user from application)
It appears that after the upgrade Reporting Services was attempting to use non-existent or invalid chunks and snapshots to satisfy application or job originated requests. When first called from within SSRS, the old chunk was accessed but then appears to have been ignored, with subsequent calls running without a chunk. Our workaround for the problem was to manually run each of our 200+ reports from within SSRS to €˜initialize€™ them for applications and jobs.

Feb 19, 2008
"Short" Story Version:
I have a VS 2005 Web Appplication solution that uses SQL Server Reporting Services 2005. One of the projects is a Report Server Project. In this project I have an RDL file that has:
1.)a non-shared XML DataSource (no credentials),
2.)a DataSet with a Command Type of Text and a Query String that is as follows:
<Query>
<XmlData>
<Root>
<LOAD LOAD_ID_PREFIX="" LOAD_ID="" TRUCK="" DIAGRAM=""/>
</Root>
</XmlData>
</Query>
3.)a field that comes from the Database that is of VarBinary(Max) that is a JPEG Image
What happens is, is that by doing #2 above, at design time I can create tables and hook into my datasets and get the report all designed out the way I want. Then at runtime, I have a Stored Procedure that uses the "FOR XML AUTO" option so that I can represent my results from the database in an XML fashion which will allow me to replace the XML Schema in between the Root tags above (in #2) with my actual data (which still has the same schema). I then save the modified RDL to a database table field and move on to happily ever after......in this case, not. In this case, since an VarBinary is involved, unless I want to get a pointer back for the Diagram Column, I have to use the "FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64" option. This returns an Encoded string to represent the Binary value that was in the Database....and this is the partial source of my angst....read on.
My approach that I described above worked flawlessly in all cases where an image wasn't involved. This report is the only report in the whole system I am working on that will have an image and it is the last one being done, so that's why I didn't run into this earlier.
I have tried all kinds of things at different levels, but the thing that I have tried that seemed to me to have the most potential was to use Embedded Code to take the Encoded ASCII Value and convert into something binary that the SSRS Reporting Engine likes (so my image will show), but I have been unsuccessful thus far. The error message I keep getting now from my Embedded Function is: "Invalid length for a Base-64 char array", which I have not been able to resolve thus far....and I do know that the Binary value in the database is good becuase I can see it in pages in my application otherwise.
This aside, is there anyone out there that knows how to take the value of a VarBinary(Max) field and insert it into the Text (XML) DataSet in the markup of an RDL file....and have it appear correctly when the report is rendered in something like the standard Report Viewer Control (or even when being previewed at design time inside of Visual Studio for that matter)?
Just to be clear, the root of my problem, as I see and understand it, is that I have a VarBinary value in a database that is being converted to a string (ASCII...I am presuming) due to how I am writing my stored procedure and then needs to go back to something else binary that the SSRS Engine will accept so that I can see my Image in the report when I render it.
I am wishful that someone out there understands my problem and has run into this and has a solution......but I am wishful of winning the lottery, too, and that hasn't happened yet...............
Thanks.

I've had some problems with Reporting Services and getting connected to the database server after configuration. I am now getting the following error message:
The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) (rsRPCError)
In my Database Setup everything runs fine when I click apply except for the Setting Connection Info for Reporting Server this has a yellow triangle with a ! and says that the report server cannot access internal information.
I also have not been able to Initialize as there are no instances to initialize and none are created when I go through setup. Is there something I need to delete from the registry or the file system that does not get removed upon uninstall?
Thanks.

I have a requirement where we have to connect to two different data-sources one is Database Table and another one is Excel Source. I know we can do this by creating a SSIS package and loading the excel data into database table and then based on some relationship between the tables we can create the data-set in SSRS. But I am looking for some other approach where I can do this without creating the SSIS package.

I have a database field which consists of a long string of values with some separator.
Ex:Â Injection^!@$#Medication
in my report i have to split the string as
Injection
Medication

Hi,
Does anyone know of a link or list that has all the parameters for the "rs:" section of the URL access parameter, except for the ones in the Microsoft books?
Thanks,

We have installation of Dbase Engine and SSIS that is PRODUCTION, and want to replace with newer hardware. In "the old days", we built "boxname_new" and installed SQL with "sqlname_new", took PROD users off-line, and quickly renamed original boxes/SQL and new boxes/SQL to original name, copied data and off we went with upgrade.
NOW, the "renaming" option for SQL tools is not supported, but with re-installation.
Has anyone developed game plan steps for accomplishing hardware upgrade, including SQL environment swap with MINIMAL downtime for PRODUCTION environment? Can you share?

My Question is: Whether we can use the same Code used for SSRS2008R2 to SSRS2012?
if not what code changes we should do?

Is it possible to write SSRS 2008 reports to run on an existing SSRS 2005 server?
If yes, what do I need to do to be able to write SSRS 2008 reports on my developer PC that will run on the SQL 2005 Server (which also has SSRS 2005 installed on it)?
I installed Visual Studio 2008 beta on the development PC and it appears that it needs SSRS installed on it too. So I installed SQL 2008 SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) and SQL 2008 Workstation Components onto the developer PC. Next I run the SQL 2008 "Reporting Services Configuration" tool. When I click on the "Web Service URL" section it hangs indefinitely and I have to force it closed.
The developer PC is Windows Vista Business.
Any suggestions on making this work, or any other information that you can think of that would allow me to use Visual Studio 2008 and the SQL 2008 "Report Designer Preview" tool to develop SSRS reports that will run on the SQL 2005 SSRS server?
Thanks!

I'm working on a report to show financial transactions from a table over a certain period. For most transactions there is a PDF document that is stored in a separate table in a binairy format. In my report I would like to include a link on every line with transaction information in the report that opens the PDF that is linked to that transaction. Just to be clear, I don't want to embed the PDF in the report but I want the users of the report to have the option to view the PDF that is related to that transaction in their standard pdf reader (adobe).
Code to do the following:
Once a user clicks on the link to view the PDF I need the code to get the binairy data of the PDF file from the table, convert it back to a PDF and open it in the default pdf reader (for example adobe reader). If it can't directly open the file then it's maybe possible to activate the 'open or download' pop up that you also get when you download something from a website.Â
