Just curious, Has anyone had to do a full recovery and have it take 20+ hours?? If anyone can give me their average times for full recovery and database size, I would appreciate it. I'm researching this topic. Thanks.

First off, I appreciate the time that those of you reading and responding to this request are offering. My quesiton is a theoretical and hopefully simple one, and yet I have been unable to find an answer to it on other searches or sources.
Here's the situation. I am working with SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I have a series of databases, all of which are in Full recovery mode, using a backup device for the full database backups and a separate device for the log backups. The full backups are run every four days during non-business hours. The log backups are run every half hour.
Last week, one of my coworkers found that some rarely-used data was unavailable, and wanted to restore a database to a point in time where the data was available. He told me that point in time was some time back in November.
To accomplish this, I restored the database (in a separate database, as to not overwrite my production database) using the Point in Time Recovery option. I selected November from the "To a point in time" window (I should note that this window is always grey, never white like most active windows, it seems), and the full database backup and the subsequent logs all became available in the "Select the backup sets to restore" window.
I then tried a bevy of different options from the "Options" screen. However, every restore succeeds (ie: it doesn't error out), but seems to be bringing the database back to a current point in time. It's never actually going back to the point in time I specify.
My questions are as follows:
a) Is it possible to do a point in time recovery to a point in time BEFORE the last full database backup?
b) If so, what options would you recommend I use? (ie: "Overwrite the existing database", restore with recovery, etc etc).
I again appreciate any and all advice I receive, and I look forward to hearing from anyone and everyone on this topic. Thank you.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe have an issue with a 3 node SQL 2012 Always on availability group. Normal operation is node 1 (primary replica) with node 2 and node 3 as secondary replicas.After some patching, SQL wasn't running on node 1 hence the AG flipped over to node 2. This went unnoticed for some time and the transaction log for one of the AG databases became full on node 2 and node 3. (I think this is because it couldn't commit the transactions on node 1 so couldn't truncate it's t-log?) The DB is using synchronous replication btw.So I started SQL on node 1 and flipped the AG back to node 1 (with a data loss warning but I accepted this).Now the issue is that on node 2 and 3, the DB in question is stuck in a "Reverting / In Recovery" State. I've tried various commands such as ALTER DATABASE SET ONLINE, RESTORE DATABASE WITH RECOVERY etc but these fail stating unable to obtain a lock on the DB.
The weird thing is that on node 1 the state of the DB is "synchronised".how to resolve this issue on node 2 and 3? I've left them overnight (in case they were rolling back transactions, the DB is fairly large) but nothing seems to have happened. remove the DB from the AG in node 2 and 3 and add it back in again, ie recreate the replication?
We have been testing point of time recovery using EM and found that this does not work.
We enter date and time and do net get the logs restored. Even if we use the default date it does not work. In Query Analyser we have have managed to recover to a point in time. Anybody got any idea why EM does not work.

How do we accomplish point in time recovery with SQL Server database.
For example:
My backup schedule is
Monday - Complete database
Tuesday - transaction log backup
Wednesday-transaction log backup
Thursday - transaction log backup
Friday - Complete database
Saturday - transaction log backup
Sunday - transaction log backup
For complete database backup, I use the below syntax:
BACKUP DATABASE myDB
TO DISK= @File1
WITH DESCRIPTION = @Desc
For transaction log backup, I use the below syntax:
BACKUP LOG myDB
TO DISK= @File1
WITH DESCRIPTION = @Desc
With this scenario, can I accomplish a point in time recovery? For example, if my database crashes on thursday night. How do i do complete recovery till that time?

We plan to do point-in-time recovery for certain databases. We plan to do Complete Database Backup every night and transaction log backup every two hours from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. I have following questions regarding the log backup.
1. There are two type of backup 'Append to media' or 'Overwrite'. If I choose 'Append' for log backup, is that mean I only need to restore database against last log backup file because all previous log backups have been accumulated there?
2. Can I automatically truncate log after the backup is done? How I can do it?

Is is true that in SQL Server 7, a point in time recovery can not read the active logs? So that any point in time recovery has to be with in some time frame of the backups of the logs?
Example:
If you have a full backup at 5 am.
Log backups every 2 hours.
You need to recover at 3:55. You would have to go back to your full backup from 2 am and the transaction logs from 6, 8, 10, 12, and 2.
You would lose any work done from 2-3:55pm?

I just have a general question: if my backup window is from 8am to 10am, and i do a restore within that backup window, what will happen? assuming we're talking only of a single database, ACME.
I'm comparing because with Oracle RMAN, it pukes when i do a restore while the backup is going on. it would complain of unable to find some archive logs.

Last week I backed up my SQL Server by using BE 2012. I named the file "SQL Server BAK" which contained copies of my SQL Server databases. A few days ago I lost some part of my data due to accidental deletion. I backed it up, so I tried to restore the database from the .bkf file. We have setup Kerberos delegation between SSRS and the database server (SQL Server Always-on cluster) so users are authenticated down to the database. The issue occurs from time to time that SSRS loses the ability to delegate the user credentials to the database. At this point in time the Report Server logs contain rejected database connections because of ANONYMOUS logon. After restarting SSRS the problem is gone.

Hi,I'm no where close to a SQL Server expert but we're using it as a back endto another application.I lost a PC that had MS SQL Server 2000. I was able to recover the .MDF and..LDF files but nothing else. How can I restore these files to another SQLServer installation on another PC. When I tried to attach them they are notrecognized as valid files (I get the red X instead of the green CHECK).Is this a basic security function that I'm not going to get around or shouldit be possible? Our server ran out of disk space during a stored procedure process. We were able to free up some space, stopped all SQL services, restarted all SQL services and now SQL Management Studio shows the database to be in recovery. Is there a way to monitor this to ensure progress is being made and to estimate when it might complete?
What does it actually mean when the database is in recovery? My database has been in recovery overnight. What is normally going on in this situation. Should I wait or take more drastic action?

I had to change the path of .mdf and .ldf files, so I decided to:
1) Take offline the database
2) run the quey ALTER DATABASE... MODIFY to change the path
3) Bring online the database.
The last step hung up (with no errors) and left the database In Recovery.
When I tried to stop and restart sql server other databases changed their status In Recovery...

We have a requirement to build SQL environment which will give us local high availability and disaster recovery to second site. We have two sites- Site A & Site B. We are planning to have two nodes at Site A and 2 nodes at Site B. All four nodes will be part of same Windows failover cluster. We will build two SQL Cluster, InstanceA will be clustered between the nodes at Site A Server and InstanceB will be clustered between the nodes at Site B, we will enable Always On Between the InstanceA and InstanceB and will be primary owner where data will be written on InstanceA and will be replicated to InstaceB. URL....Now we want we will have instanceC on the Site B and data will be writen from the application available on Site B, will be replicated to the instance on the Site A as replica.

I am trying to implement a plan for a SQL7 database that is used by the company I work for. Having read the SQL manuals I have come to the following conclusion:
I want to do a complete backup of the database at midnight and do a transaction log backup every 30 minutes between 7am and 7pm. I am hoping this will allow me to 'undo' any user mistakes and roll back the database changes to the last transaction log backup.
The questions I have are:
1) By backing up the transaction log every 30 minutes, will this then give me the ability to 'roll back' the database to the last time the transaction log was backed up (i.e. 30 minutes max) ?
2) How do I load the transaction log back in ? (i.e roll the database changes back). A simple Restore operation (with truncate ???)
3)Am I totally confused or on the right track ?

Hi I'm a newbie with a problem.
SQL Server 6.5 SP4. Have had problems today with SQL Server running out of LOCKS. We increased these & all seemed fine. LOCKS ranout again & we brought SQL Server back up our major database started a recovery. I know the spid of the recovery from the SQL Server errorlog but when I select the sysprocesses table I don't find an entry for this spid. The recovery has been running for about 2 hours. My question is should I see the spid of the recovery process in the sysprocesses table & is 2 hours long for a recovery of a 5 GB database?

I cancelled an INSERT operation on a database. Now I get:
"Recovery of database 'BounceRepository' (6) is 0% complete (approximately 2024654 more seconds)"
That is another 23 days of straight recover time!!! The original INSERT only ran for about 30 hours.
In Windows Performance Monitor, I can see that the system isn't disk or CPU limited. What is the server doing? How can I make it go faster?
