Connecting In Read-only Mode

Feb 18, 2008

I posted this as a reply to another thread but then noticed it was marked as 'Answered' so i figured I'll create a new one.

This is a known issue (i guess) that you need to have write access to the database your connecting to but I actually want to know how to connect to a database with read only permissions. This should not be that rare of a case where you only want to read something without writting to it. I have a system where users can connect to other databases and "import" data from there but if the user doesn't have write access or the file is read only I get an exception.

Any idea how I can connect in read-only mode?

Thanks!

Databases Starting Up In Read-only Mode.

Jul 25, 2000

Hi,

About a month ago, a couple of our databases started up in read-only mode for some reason. I am the new DBA on the job, and the error logs from a month ago are not present.

I was wondering if anyone has had a problem where a SQLServer 7.0 database did this to them? We restart our DBs each day using scripts, so it is odd that this happens only intermittently (no one has seen a pattern at this point).

Any information would be muc appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

Serializable Read And Lock Mode

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,Version Info: SQLSERVER 2000 SP3I am trying to understand how SQL Server works with SERIALIZABLE read.I am fairly new to SQL Server, having mainly worked with Informix. We are getting lock timeout error in our application. Our lock timeoutis set to 20 seconds. I am trying to investigate why locks are held forsuch a long time in the first place.I believe SQLServer tries to put keylocks as much as possible forensuring serializibility. For e.g.SELECT column_bfrom table_awhere column_c between 1000 and 1100what if column_c has no index. Does it switch over the data row.And what if a table has no index. Will it go for table lock, as ituse to do in earlier versions.TIA.--email id is bogus

Attach Db From Installer (only Read Mode)

Sep 19, 2007

Hi,
I have made setup of my program,
I need to attach a db to the server. To do this:
- Copy mdf and ldf files into default data folder of instance of sqlexpress
- run scrip from custom action in the installer that:
a. attach the db
b. create login
c. create user for login in db

There is a problem...I run script slq file by sqlcmd and launch it from a c# process.

The rusult is that the db was attacched but in only read mode, and the point c not work.

If I execute manually the same script sql with sqlcmd in dos window, it work without problem in all point: a,b and c

What are the reason of this?

I think that start process in c# not work correctly....this is the code:

process = new Process();

process.StartInfo.FileName = "sqlcmd.exe";

process.StartInfo.Arguments = commandLine;

process.Start();

process.WaitForExit();

help me, plese!
thanks in advance

SQL 2012 :: Agent Job History Shows Step Still Running But Shows Start And End Times?

Jul 1, 2015

I have a SQL Agent job that runs at 4:15 in the morning. The job has 5 steps, each step only runs if the preceding step succeeds. The second step, which calls an SSIS package that does the main processing, appears to finish as it goes on to the next step; however, when looking in 'View History' there are 2 entries for this step - the first one shows it as still running (Circled Green Arrow) but with a start and end time. The second entry says the job succeeded.

I have been seeing conflicts, such as deadlocks, with later jobs. I suspect this job is causing the conflicts - maybe the package is still running in the background instead of having actually completed?

what conditions a job step my be showing in the job history as both running AND completed successfully?

SQL Server 7.0 Shows A Suspect Database After Attaching It In SSME?

Oct 11, 2006

Hello,

I have a database that resides in SQL Server 7.0 that I can attach in Microsoft's SQL Server Management Studio Express and I can see all the tables from the database in that program.

My problem is that when ever I re open SQL Server Enterprise manager, the database that I attached to SSME, shows up as Database(Suspect). Now I am unable to view my tables in that database. Can anyone tell me what causes this, and how I can resolve that issue?

I need to have my sql server database, and sql server express edition database present in SSME because I am doing an import of data from SQL Server 7.0 to SQL server express.

Also, if there is another easier way to import data from SQL Server 7.0 to SQL Express edition, I would like to know...

Thanks in advance.

Query Executes Faster In Grid Mode Than In Text Mode!!

Mar 9, 2000

Hello,everyone!!

There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)

Rgds,
Adie

Failed To Update Database C:INETPUBWWWROOTAPP_DATAASPNETDB.MDF Because The Database Is Read-only.

Mar 4, 2006

I'm new to ASP.NET (I normally work with Windows Forms) and have installed the Club Website Starter Kit. I created an Administrators role and a user called "admin". When I run the project locally, everything works as it should - I can log in as admin and I can create new users.
I then copied the site to localhost (C:Inetpubwwwroot), but when I run the site from localhost, I can't log in (as admin or any other user); instead I get a message that says, "Your login attempt was not successful. Please try again."
Also, I can't create a new user. When I try, I get the following error:

I figure there must be a simple(?) explanation and solution for this problem, and ideally, some sort of step-by-step procedure that new users to ASP.NET can follow to configure a site - such as one of the starter kits - to work correctly. I can honestly say that trying to get this working has been an extremely frustrating experience.
If someone could help me out, I would really appreciate it. I've been working on this for two days and feeling I have hit the wall.
Thanks in advance.

Failed To Update Database C:INETPUB... Because The Database Is Read-only.

Mar 28, 2006

Hi there,I am getting a real problem with ASP.NET 2.0, all i am trying to do is run a recovert password (using the login controls) and i got the following error.Does anybody know how to fix this? I have tried the SSEUTIL answer here and it didn't work. http://forums.asp.net/909168/ShowPost.aspxI also ensured that Network Services user has READ/WRITE/EXECUTE premissions on the directory below and that each file isn't read only and also that it inherits ACL from the directory which it seems to do..Bit of strange one this, it isn't created (and i am not using) a beta version of VS 2005 Pro... but a full retail version. The PC is the local PC with IIS 5.1 and VS installed... it is the one i am using for developing.. I don't need to copy my files to the IIS directory below as that is where i have created it and open it in VS 2005 from there..I did read that if you use IIS 5.1 then the user should be ASPNET ... but i don't seem to have that use but a Network Services user...Any help or guidance would be really appreciated... i have come to a stop stage and can't get any further..Thanksian

Database In Suspect Mode

May 12, 2000

I have a database in suspect mode. There is no backup of this database.
I've followed the troubleshooting and it isn't working out.
There are 3 steps:
1. execute sp_resetstatus
2. use alter database to add data file or log file to the database
3. stop and restart SQL Server
4. free disk space and rerun recovery
I've tried to make it, but the step # 2 haven't worked.
Then I tried step 3, however the database is still in suspect mode.
What should I do?
Is there something I am missing?
Thanks,
Fábio

Help - Database In Bypass Emergency Mode

Jul 11, 2002

I am looking for some advice. On a 6.5 database a user seemed to be having slow response, someone decided to stop and start the services. The database in question went into recovery mode. 24 hours later a network tech decided to stop and start the services again because the database was in recovery still. 5 hours later they decided to run the statement to put the database in Bypass Emergency Mode - "update sysdatabase set status = -32768 where name = 'dbname'", then they decided to set the status to 0 which made the database available again.

What can I do to ensure they did not damage the database? Can I compare the backup prior to the issue with the current database?

Thanks

Database Compatibility Mode - When To Change???

Sep 14, 2004

I have been migrating Databases from a SQL Server 7.0 Instance to a 2000 Instance. Basically the method I use is as follows:

a)Create a new Database on the Destination Server (same name as the Source) When I create the new Database on my destination server, the compatibility mode is '80' and the source is always '70'

b) do a 'revlogin' on the Source Server and use the output from that query to recreate the logins on the destination server

c) make sure that the default DB for the newly creates logins are correct and change them if necessary

d) Backup the DB on the Source Server and Restore it to the Destination Server.

e) Check login permissions and fix any orphaned users - usually I don't find any that need to be fixed, but I always check.

I've read BOL on Changing the compatibility mode on the Database... but I'm still unsure when I would have to do this and why???????????????? SHOULD I be changing the compatiblity mode from 80 to 70 when migrating Databases from 7.0 to 2000???? Any advice on moving DBs in this manner would be appreciated.
