Database Triggers - SQL Server - Fields Only Allowed If Listed In Another Field In Another Table

I would like to ensure data integrity in a column (actually multiple columns will need a trigger) in my table(s) by setting up a trigger which allows an update of my database field only if the value which is being written to the field in the database exists in another column (in another "check" table).
eg. I only want values "Yes", "No" or "" in many of my fields, which I store in a column named "YesNoBlank" in another table.
Does anyone know the easy way to do this? / Syntax for the trigger?
Wait, please don't ignore this one ... I've already tried all the obvious stuff.
I am currently on a contract assignment, and so cannot post the exact code (at least not at this time), but I should be able to layout the problem enough anyway.
I have a section of code that hits a remote database (same network, same subnet, but different city than the primary SQL database) to retrieve information logged by a digital phone system for display on an intranet screen.
The code is your typical recordset iteration, and looks basically like this. Note: the connection is created and opened inside the PhoneCenter class. SQL statement used has been verified correct in SQL Server Management Studio.

This code runs flawlessly, every time, on the development platform but fails at "rs.MoveNext" when pushed out to the production server. What mystifies me is that the "Operation is not allowed when the object is closed" should not occur on code inside an rs.eof test, since the recordset must be open and have data in order to enter such a block.
This is, however, exactly what is happening. In 7 years working with SQL Server and ADO, I've never seen anything quite like this. Does anyone have any insight into what might be going on here?
P.S. I am in the process of attempting to gather more detailed information about this error, which I will post as it arrives if needed. At the moment, the above message is all I have to go on.
Hi, Im trying to pull data from 2 fields in the same table into a SqlDataSource that feeds into a GridView, and display them as 1 field in GridView? I have a database table that has entries of users and their friends. so this tblFriendUser has a column called UserName and another column called FriendUserName. I am trying to get a list of friends for that particular user. Note that if User1 initiated the friend request, he will be listed as UserName and his friend as FriendUserName, but if his friend initiated the friend request, it will be vice versa: him being the FriendUserName and his friend the UserName. So I want the following 2 queries run and merged into one query in order to return 2 columns only: UserFriendID & UserName, is that possible? Is my design bad? Any suggestions/advice would help! Hi,I use view to join difference table together for some function. However,when the "real" table fields changed (e.g. add/delete/change field). How can I create a Table whose one field will be 'tableid INT IDENTITY(1,1)' and other fields will be the fields from the table "ashu". can this be possible in SQL Server without explicitly writing the"ashu" table's fields name.
I am working with a vendor application called Cisco Unified Attendant Console - it operates on a Windows server with a SQL express database. The CUPs function of the application needs to reference a "contact" field with only the user portion of the contact's email address - generally, the contact's User ID will match the user portion of their email address, however, for this customer it does not (they use the employee number as the User ID and firstname.lastname as user portion of the email address.

The dbo.Contact_Properties table of the ATTCFG database has the following fields that we can work with:  - First_Name  - Last_Name  - Email  - User_Field_2  - Contact_Unique_Ref (appears to be the field that ties all other contact tables together ?)

I have a table adapter for one of my SQL2005 tables, and in two different fields I accept a date time. Now 99% of the times, new rows to this table will be filled out using DateTIme.Now(), as a Time Stamp is what I'm going for.
Here is the line of code in question...cops_current_data_adapter.Insert(ProductOrder, Convert.ToInt16(Session["StationId"].ToString()), PartNumber, DateTime.Now, DateTime.Now, Convert.ToInt16(qty), 0); The second DateTime.Now is the one that can be null, and it's throwing a formatting error everytime I try and drop it in there. It's a FormatException, and there's not much more to the example except unhelpful tips like be careful when conveting a string to a dateTime, which I'm not doing. Needless to say for the code to compile, and then throw a Format error at runtime is a bit frustraiting. Any suggestions would be most appreciated
Hello, I am using the SSIS import/export wizard to import an Access table into a sql server 2005 database. The table has fields in Arabic (name, last name, etc.) and non-Arabic fields (gender, phone number, category, etc.). The destination table has nvarchar columns. After the import, I can see the Arabic characters in the destination table, but they appear in inverse order (from left to right). In Access (or Excel), Arabic fields appear as they should (from right to left) and non-Arabic fields are OK as well (from left to right). If I do a simple copy-and-paste of a "correct" Arabic text into the table, the result is still wrong (inversed letters)... Please help, I can't see what else to do. Thank you.
I have one table namely consumer with approx 50 columns.
I have created one same table with audit prefix including 2 more column for action n timestamp fields.
My question is that if user change only 10 column data at a time: i want to add only that particular column data rather to add entire row. Currently I am adding entire row in audit table but now scenario is change to update only updated column data.

Hi, I was trying to run an insert statement which has subquery, But it is returning the error like this.. Subqueries are not allowed in this context. Only scalar expressions are allowed. -------------- Is there a way to reparse the insert statement without have to assign the subquery to a temp value and insert it? thanks.. I know there has to be a way to do this, but I've gone brain dead. Thescenario..a varchar field in a table contains a date range (i.e. June 1,2004 - June 15, 2004 or September 1, 2004 - September 30, 2004 or...). Theusers have decided thats a bad way to do this (!) so they want to split thatfield into two new fields. Everything before the space/dash ( -) goes intoa 'FromDate' field, everything after the dash/space goes into the 'ToDate'field. I've played around with STRING commands, but haven't stumbled on ityet. Any help at all would be appreciated! DTS?
This isn€™t an problem as such, it€™s more of a debate.
If a table needs a number of update triggers which do differing tasks, should these triggers be separated out or encapsulated into one all encompassing trigger. Speaking in terms of performance, it doesn€™t make much of an improvement doing either depending upon the tasks performed. I was wondering in terms of maintenance and best practice etc. My view is that if the triggers do totally differing tasks they should be a trigger each on their own.
I'm connecting to an Sql Compact database (3.1) from a C# assembly exposed via COM and called from inside a winsock LSP. The database is only used once on instantiation of the class, which happens in the first call to WSPStartup.
The issue I'm having is that under Vista and when running inside IE7 I get the error in the title. However there is no problems with IE7 under windows XP, or with Firefox and MSN Messenger under XP or Vista!
When selecting to run IE as administrator, the problem dissapears, however when using the LogonUser API to impersonate an administrator it doesnt.
This would seem like a permissions issue, strange though that Firefox under vista has no problems.. Also, the following code throws no SecurityException under either browser, indicating the code is running with full trust.

I have Written WinForm Application that uses SQL Server Compact 3.5. I also deploy Database (SDF) File with this application. Installation Package Created Using InstallShield 2008.
I Deployed SDF in Common App Data Folder. In Administrator mode Application is working fine. But in User Mode I Get Error Message.
"Access to the database file is not allowed. [ File name = C:Documents and SettingsAll Users Application DataGeorgian MicrosystemsCodex 2007 R2 Russian DatabaseCodexRussian2007.sdf ]"
I Also Tested That Application in user mode Can Create File in ("C:Documents and SettingsAll Users Application DataGeorgian MicrosystemsCodex 2007 R2 Russian Database") Directory.
Test Environment is XP SP2
I Tryed to Copy SDF file manualy. Appplication in user mode can access on it if file is copyed in user mode. if this file is copyd in Administator mode even in users Local Directory SQL Engine can't access on it.

I want to create a function that searches for allowed characters within a table range (that contains the allowed characters) and replace any characters outside this range with a space.
For example -
'Bill123?', 'Jones12.z-' 'John&12/', 'QWERT123&4'
Wanted results – the single quotes are there to show the space for the replaced characters.

The function will wrap around the column names and I know it can be done without a table validate the characters but it must be done this way.
I just encountered the problem that with Microsoft Time Series algorithm, no more than one case table is allowed? Mining structure is not allowed to contain any nested table?

SQL 2005 SP2. Upgraded from 2000 and migrated maintenance plan. I am now getting an error when running the maintenance plan for all System databases:
failed with the following error: "Backup and restore operations are not allowed on database tempdb. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

I have some database tables, and each one of them have a creation_date and modified_date in them. I was trying to figure out a way where when a row in one of these tables is changed using Enterprise Manager (Database -> Tables -> select table -> right click -> select all rows -> change a field in a row inside a table), is there a way apart from triggers, such that the "modified_date" column for that row get changed to 'getdate()' (rather picks up the current datetime).
