Database-with High And Efficient Performance

Feb 11, 2008

Hi,

I am working in Trade enivornment and i have experience only on SQL 2000.

Each day approximately 4 million data gets loaded and transactions being happened in my server.

Please let me know which database(Sql/Oracle..) can i use for high performance with free or one license.

I am looking for a database which is having hhigh speed in retrieving large data and having massive storage with no performance issues.

Some suggested me to use Informix, but still im doing a R&D work on it.

Please suggest me with two or three different datases with their high performance features.

Thanks in advance

High Safety Changed To High Performance After Fail Over ?

Mar 6, 2008

Hi There

I realise this is a stupid quesiton but i cannot really find any confirmation of this in BOL.

If you are running High Safety with automatic failover, when failover occurs does this automatically change to High Performance mode. SInce for failover to occur something has happen with the primary , it will be impossible to commit transactions on the new primary and mirror asyncronously since 1 of them is no longer available.

So am i correct in assuming that automatic failover also automatically changes the mode to High Performacne for that session?

Thanx

High Performance Lookups

Dec 22, 2007

Ive got an ETL process I have written which takes about 10 million rows from a staging database and loads it into production database with an INSERT statement. The INSERT statement makes a function call to retrieve the surrogate key for each row. The function looks in a replicated copy of our production database so no load is on our production environment during this time.

So: INSERT INTO foo(...) SELECT name, address, zip, dbo.fnGetSurrKey( name, address)

It took about 12hrs to insert 6 million rows last night and Im wondering if there is a better way of doing this. Maybe a multithreaded way like SSIS might have.

Assuming my function is optimized as much as possible, does anyone have any tips for speeding this up?

Also, the machine this ran on has 16gb of RAM but was setup to use only 2GB during this process. I have already changed it to 12gb and restarted the process a week ago, but the change doesnt take affect until you reboot. Would I see a significant performance increase from that?

Performance Tuning On High Volume Server

Jan 4, 2007

I am looking to improve the performance of my sql server databases.

I currently have a dual location system, the database server setup is basically a quad xeon with 4gb at my office and a double xeon with 4gb at a remote webhosting location. There are separate application/web/intranet servers at each site. The two databases servers are replicated with the local server publishing to the remote server.

The relational database holds circa 26 million records, growing by a volume of 10,000 per day, there are approximately 50,000 queries performed per day.

My theory is that the replication of the two databases is causing a slowdown; despite fast network connections (averaging 200ms between servers) the replication seems to place a large load on the local server. Would it be sensible to replicate to a second local server and then replicate to the remote server, placing any burden on the second server?

I am planning to upgrade the local server to a high capacity 4+ cpu 64bit server, my problem is that although I have noticed a slow down in performance over time, I am unsure how to go about measuring and quantifying this in order to diagnose the bottlenecks and ensure that investing in a new server would be worthwhile. Where would one be best advised to start this project?

High CPU Performance Issue With BIGINT Column Comparison SQL Code

Dec 11, 2007

I recently converted a column that was once an int to an bigint on one of my tables. The modified column provided a generic row id information and there are duplicates within this column. I am trying to perform a self join via the following:

SELECT a.row_id FROM test_db a INNER JOIN test_db b ON b.row_id < a.row_id.

This code use to work when the column was an int but now I am getting high CPU issues since I converted to bigint. I am unsure on why the change to bigint will cause such an issue. The OS/SQL is 64BIT.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Replication Performance Degrade In Unidirectional Direction And Lock Time Out (Update Are High Than Inserts)

Feb 21, 2007

We recently implemented merge replication. We were expereincing. The replication is between 2 SQL Servers (2005) over same network box, and since we have introduced the replication, the performance has degraded considerably on subscriber end.

1)   One thing that should be mention is that its a "unidirectional Direction" flow of changes is from publisher towards subscriber (only one publisher and distributor as well and one subscriber ).

2) Updates are high than inserts and only one article let say "Article1" ave update up to 2000 per day and i am experiecing that dbo.MSmerge_upd_sp_Article1_GUID taking more cpu time.what should be do..

on subscriber database  response time is going to slow and i am experiencing a lot of number of LOCK time outs on application end.

can any one can also suggest me server level settings for aviding locking time out.

looking for any experieced solution/suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

How Efficient Is Cross Database Selects

May 23, 2008

Hello,

I want to know how efficient are cross database selects such as

select column from data.dbo.table;

The reason I'm inquiring is because I want to design a database whereas I'm tightly coupling the tables in several databases that are all referencing each other in some way shape or form.

If it is not too efficient or if you know of a way to make these cross database selects more efficient please offer the suggestion.

Thank,

High Availability To High Protection Without Reconfiguring Mirroring

Apr 23, 2007

Hi,

Is there a way to configure mirroring to go from High Availability to High Protection without having to reconfigure Database Mirroring? Using the interface in Management Studio, I can change the configuration option to High Performance, but not High Protection despite both of them being Synchronous.

If not, what are the recommended steps to configure the mirror once it already has been configured? Is just like initially setting up the mirror or would there be any shortcuts I could take? If I stop the mirroring and remove the witness, will the High Protection option be available?

Thanks,
J.

Database Mirroring - High Safety Mode

Oct 1, 2006

Hello!

I'm reading about database mirroring in High Safety Mode (Synchronous with no witness). I'm a little confused about what happens if the mirror server disappears.

From Books Online
"If the mirror server instance goes down, the principal server instance is unaffected and runs exposed (that is without mirroring the data)."
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179344.aspx

I was to the course [Upgrading your Database Administration Skills to SQL Server 2005] and the course material does not say the same."Scenario: Synchronous mirroring without a witness server. If the mirror server becomes unavailable, the principal server will take the database offline. This action attempts to maximize the protection of the database and ensure the integrity of its contents"

I've made tests that shows that Books Online is right,
but I would like to know if this is a behaviour that has changed.

I also would like to know if it's possible to run in a more secure mode,
where exposed operations is not allowed.

Best regards

Ola Hallengren

Recovery :: 2012 R2 High Availability Database Not Replicating?

May 19, 2015

Discovered that a geo-spatial AlwaysOn HA database (1 of 4) was not synchronizing as at a point in time earlier in the day.  Suspend Data Movement appears to be working perpetually without finishing.  The SQL Server services is in a Pending Changes state after an attempt to restart it from SQL Configuration Manager.  The Cluster Dashboard says it is in a Not Synchronizing state, with only the one database in question having a yellow triangle, all 3 others show green.

The warning for the cluster is:At least one availability database on this availability replica has an unhealthy data synchronization state. If this is an asynchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. If this is a synchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state.  There is no abnormal data movement from the primary to the seconday. The warnings for the unhealthy database are:

The data synchronization state of this availability database is unhealthy. On an asynchronous-commit availability replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. On a synchronous-commit replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state.Either a database administrator or the system has suspended data synchronization on this availability database. So how to get this database back to synchronizing state?

The SSE Provider Did Not Find The Database File Specified In The Connection String. At The Configured Trust Level (below High Trust Level), The SSE Provider Can Not Automatically Create The Database File.

Aug 31, 2007

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website   and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration.  So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do?  It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost".  So that is the first problem.  So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box).  How ever when I try to get someone to try to login  I am taken to a page that has an server error.  The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom.  I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer.  On my computer I have MSSQL express.  So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder).  So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database.  Is this the correct methodology?   Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server?   The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient.  I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files.  So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also?  So that I don't have to use MSSQL?  My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense.  It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

More Efficient Code

Dec 13, 2007

Hi all, I have the code listed below and feel that it could be run much more efficiently.  I run this same code for attrib2, 3, description, etc for a total of 21, so on each postback I am running a total of 21 different connections, i have listed only 3 of them here for the general idea.  I run this same code for update and for insert, so 21 times for each of them as well.  In fact if someone is adding a customer, after they hit the new customer button, it first runs 21 inserts of blanks for each field, then runs 21 updates for anything they put in fields, on the same records.  This is running too slow...  any ideas on how I can combine these??  We have 21 different entries for EVERY customer.  The Pf_property does not change, it is 21 different set entries, the only one that changes is the Pf_Value.
Try                Dim queryString As String = "select Pf_Value from CustomerPOFlexField where [Pf_property] = 'Attrib1' and [Pf_CustomerNo] = @CustomerNo"                Dim connection As New SqlClient.SqlConnection("connectionstring")                Dim command As SqlClient.SqlCommand = New SqlClient.SqlCommand(queryString, connection)                command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@CustomerNo", DropDownlist1.SelectedValue)                Dim reader As SqlClient.SqlDataReader                command.Connection.Open()                reader = command.ExecuteReader                reader.Read()                TextBox2.Text = Convert.ToString(reader("Pf_Value"))                command.Connection.Close()            Catch ex As SystemException                Response.Write(ex.ToString)            End Try

In-efficient SQL Code

Sep 7, 2000

Hey people

I'd be really grateful if someone can help me with this. Could someone explain the following:
If the following code is executed, it runs instantly:

declare @SellItemID numeric (8,0)
select @SellItemID = 5296979

SELECT distinct s.sell_itm_id
FROM stor_sell_itm s
WHERE (s.sell_itm_id = @SellItemID )

However, if I use this WHERE clause instead -

WHERE (@SellItemID = 0 OR s.sell_itm_id = @SellItemID)

- it takes 70 micro seconds. When I join a few more tables into the statement, the difference is 4 seconds!

This is an example of a technique I'm using in loads of places - I only want the statement to return all records if the filter is zero, otherwise the matching record only. I think that by using checking the value of the variable in the WHERE clause, a table scan is used instead of an index. This seems nonsensical since the variable is effectively a constant. Wrapping the entire select statement with an IF or CASE works, but when I've got 10 filters I'd have to 100 select statements.
I DON'T GET IT!! There must be a simple answer, HELP!!
Jo

PS this problem seems to occur both in 6.5 and 7.0

More Efficient Way Than You Have Published

Dec 8, 2004

Sumanesh writes "Recently I read one article “Converting Multiple Rows into a CSV string

I have found one easy and more efficient way to achieve the same thing.
First I have a table called test with 2 columns (ID and Data)
And some data inserted into it.

CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].CombineData(@ID SMALLINT)
RETURNS VARCHAR(2000)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @Data VARCHAR(2000)

SET @Data = ''
SELECT @Data = @Data + Data + ',' FROM Test WHERE ID = @ID
RETURN LEFT(@Data,LEN(@Data)-1)

END
GO

Then used a simple select query to achieve the same

SELECT DISTINCT ID, [dbo].CombineData(ID) FROM Test

Which achieved the same thing without using any temporary tables and Cursors. I am sure that you will accept that this is more efficient than the one that has been published.

Efficient SQL Backup?

I will have to go through the whole processof doing a complete backup of the source , restoring it at the otherens and then starting trans-backup again. Also, if we do a failover to the target server, then when we roll backto the source server again we have to da a back-up of the target andrestore it on the source server. Is ther a more efficent way of doing this??

Most Efficient Way Of Returning Data

Feb 22, 2007

I have a number of tables, and I need to create a summary of the data. Now I have two choices. I could create a stored procedure that creates a temp table with the filters applied. This would require 12 selects for each year (we have 3 years of data so far). This means 36 selects so far that fill a temp table. The second choice is to create a table with the required columns and rows. As I am esspecially cross-joining 4 tables, the table would have about 10 x 10 x 12 x A rows, where A is a variable that will grow quickly. I can then keep this table up-to-date using triggers for each insert. Then all I need to do is use an aggregate funtion on the relevant filter. My question is, which is more efficient. Creating a stored procedure that creates the table dynamically, or have a table with thousands of rows and using an aggregate function on these.PS I am using SQL Server 2000Jag

Is There A More Efficient Way To Perform This Process?

Dec 11, 2007

My e-commerce site is currently running the following process when items are shipped from the manufacturer:1. Manufacturer sends a 2-column CSV to the retailer containing an Order Number and its Shipping Tracking Number.2. Through the web admin panel I've built, a retail staff member uploads the CSV to the server.3. In code, the CSV is parsed.  The tracking number is saved to the database attached to the Order Number.4. After a tracking # is saved, each item in that order has its status updated to Shipped.5. The customer is sent an email using ASPEmail from Persits which contains their tracking #.The process seems to work without a problem so long as the CSV contains roughly 50 tracking #'s or so.  The retailer has gotten insanely busy and wants to upload 3 or 4 thousand tracking #'s in a single CSV, but the process times out, even with large server timeout values being set in code.  Is there a way to streamline the process to make this work more efficiently?  I can provide the code if that helps.
