Can You Create Folders Under Databases In SMS

Aug 20, 2006

I see under databases in the object explorer of SQL Server Management Studio that there are two sub-folders: System Databases and Database Snapshots.

Is there a way to create other folders here? It would be nice to be able to group the various databases (ex. Samples).

Attach Databases Dialog Doesn't Give Mw Access To My VWD Folders

Mar 25, 2007

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio eExpress and I'm tryng to link to a database created in Visual Web Developer Express. My problem is that I can't see large parts of my file system when I try to attach a database in SQL Server Express. Web Developer Express likes to put its databases in C:Documents and Settings<User Name>My DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSites<Site Name>App_Data. However, when I try to attach a database in that location to SQL Server Express (Right Click Databases node, select Attach from the shortcut menu then Add from the Attach Databases dialog) I get a folder tree that won’t let me go any further than C:Documents and Settings<User Name>. There seem to be large parts of my folder structure that I cannot access with this dialog.

Just in case this is a permissions issue, I am using Windows XP Pro on a stand alone machine. I log on as Administrator, and the <User Name> in the above paths is Administrator. The Administrator is a member of the Administrators group. I have never logged on as anything else and never made any changes to the way permissions are set. When I start SQL Server express I select Windows Authentication.

TIA

Inner Join On Two Separate Databases

May 30, 2008

I need to do a inner join on tables from two separate databases.  I understand that you can do this by using this type of syntax:
select a.col1, b.col2from db1.dbo.tab1 a, db2.dbo.tab2 bwhere a.col1 = b.col2however, how do I reference the two databases in the following code?
Thanks,
Tim

Function GetConnectionString() As StringDim ConnectionString As String = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MainWeb").ConnectionString

Separate Databases For High/low Transaction Volumes?

Jun 23, 2006

I have an existing database with approx 500,000 rows and accessed by afew hundred users per day creating approx 1,000 new records per dayplus typical reporting - relatively low volume stuff for SQL Server.I'm about to add a process that will be importing data daily fromlegacy databases and summarizing it for reporting purposes, integratingit with the existing database. This volume of data will be considerablyhigher, perhaps 100,000+ rows per day, which will be deleted once ithas been summarized and the results written to some intermediatetables. Is there any concern about mixing different levels of volume within onedatabase? As I'll be creating lots of rows daily and then deleting themI was wondering about fragmentation, transaction logging etc. andwhether having this processing in a separate database from the mainapplication would be 'better'.

How To Access 2 Databases On Separate Servers From Within The Same Query

Apr 10, 2008

Hi,

Im trying to access data from a database on another server in a SQL 2005 query.

use Bury2k29.ServiceDeskForms
select .......

but I get the message

could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'Burky2k29'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.

Bury2k29 is the name of the server, and ServiceDeskForms is the database I want to access.

When I open a blank query and enter only the code to access that database it runs fine.

Any ideas?

Update Query Joining Tables From Separate Databases

Apr 17, 2008

In database DB1, I have table DB1.dbo.Suppliers1. This table has an ID column of type INT named SUPPL1_ID

In database DB2, I have table DB2.dbo.Suppliers2. This table has an ID column of type INT named SUPPL2_ID
I would like to update DB2.dbo.Suppliers2 based on values from DB1.dbo.Suppliers1 joining on SUPPL1_ID = SUPPL2_ID.

How can I do this in SSIS?

Assumptions:

linked servers are not an option, as I want the SSIS package to be portable and not dependent on server environments.
TIA.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Function To Create Folders (and Sub Folders)

I'm using sp_OACreate in a scalar function to create a folder if it doesn't exist, and it works fine if you're asking it to create a single folder. For instance: C:Newfolder

It creates "Newfolder"

However, if I try to ask it to create C:NewfolderNewsubfolder

It doesn't work

Here's the code:

DECLARE @Exists int, @ObjFile int, @ObjFileSystem int, @Folder nvarchar(500) = 'C:',
@Action tinyint = 1 --(0 to check if folder exists, 1 to actually create it)

EXEC dbo.sp_OACreate 'Scripting.FileSystemObject', @ObjFileSystem OUT
EXEC dbo.sp_OAMethod @ObjFileSystem, 'FolderExists', @Exists OUT, @Folder

Data Access :: Combining Tables Of 2 Separate Databases For ODBC Use

Apr 29, 2015

Currently we have one customer database containing various tables. As part of requirements for a new client, we need to manage their data in a totally separate database. The tables and structure are exactly the same but we would be loading data into a separate database.

I am looking for a way to combine tables with the same name in each database when I run queries, rather than having to query each database separately. Currently we actually have many queries set up in MS Access which use an ODBC link to query the data off SQL server. I am aware it is possible to apply a UNION SELECT in Access from 2 separate ODBC connections, but this is extremely slow.So my initial question is - is there a way to provide access to the tables from both databases over the same ODBC link? If this cannot be done over ODBC I guess we can consider more "modern" methods, but ideally we want to keep this in MS Access as that is where our existing queries are based. I was hoping that some kind of view can be treated as an ODBC connection.I mentioned ideally we want to keep the reporting queries in MS Access.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Separate Transaction Log Files For Multiple Databases?

May 15, 2015

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?

We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

Two (2) App_Data Folders?

Apr 25, 2007

I loaded an application to my server with the app_data folder intact in the application folder which is a sub folder of the root web.
Through my host enableing SQL somehow a second App_Data folder has been created in the root of the web and the db has been duplicated.  Without a doubt this is causing a problem with the application not running correctly.  The application is the asp.net membership app which is trying to read and write to the .mdf file.
Can we simply delete the App_data folder in the the root web or will this rebuild itself?  Or do we need to edit the web config files?
How / Why did this happen?
Server is running Win2k with SQL Express 2005

How To Enumerate IS Folders ?

Dec 5, 2007

Hi All,

I need to get access to stored packages. To do so I use
Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application class.
There are methods: Application.FolderExistsOnDtsServer, Application.FolderExistsOnSqlServer
but I need to enumerate existed folders.
Are there something like: Application.GetFolders(String ParentFolderName) ?
I have searched in doc but there is not any useful except:

"To verify that the folder was created, the following Transact-SQL query selects all packages stored in the File System folder of the Stored Packages package store.

select * from sysdtspackages90 "

It is not suitable for me because I don't have permissions to access database

Thanks,

Dynamically Name Folders

Feb 12, 2007

Apologies in advance for the newbie question. I'm new to Integration Services and am trying to build my first project.

I want to dynamically create folders based on the results of a stored procedure. The resultset is limited to one column but can contain multiple rows. (It returns a list of 8-character strings representing dates.) This returned value needs to be combined with the path where the new folders should be created.

Can someone point me in the right direction? I've run the stored procedure and put the resultset into a RecordSet Destination that uses a variable of type Object. (At least, I think I've done it correctly.) But I have not been able to figure out how to access this data to actually create the folders.

Thanks for the help,

Chris

 SELECT producst.id, products.descri, clientscondition.discount from products, clientscondition where products.line=condition.line
SELECT products.id, products.descri, condition.discount from products, condition in 'clients' where products.line=condition.line

Granting Permission To Folders

Feb 12, 2008

Within my Report Manager, I have several folders, and I would like these folders to be only visible to certain users and groups. In the Active Directory I have DOMAINGroupName1. If I add this group to the folder I want them to have access to with a Browser role, when they open Report Manager they do not see the folder at all. Then I added the same group to the HOME folder also, but again they could not see their folder when they opened the Report Manager. If I add the Users of this group individually (DOMAINUser1, DOMAINUser2 etc) then they can see the folder and run reports just fine. This is not an ideal solution as groups will change over time and I don't want to have to keep adding and deleting members. Anyone got any ideas why they can't see their folder?
Thanks!

ReportServer Folders And Deployment

Oct 28, 2007

I am making changes to a report and believe I am correctly deploying it to an ssrs report folder per the messages I get back from vs.net.

Question is, how can I see what folders are available? and where? At some point I knew or was able to do this, and think it was through SQL server since I can't see them through IIS and they don't appear to be real file system folders.

Also, I'm trying to figure out why parameter default value changes i make don't seem to deploy or overwrite??, while cosmetic (color for example) changes do when I deploy. I am selecting the option overwritedatasource in the project.

If I navigate to the reportserver I see the folder in question.

Removing My Reports Folders

Apr 24, 2008

I am the administrator for our Reporting Services environment. I was researching the functionality of the My Reports feature of Reporting Services 2005. I enabled the My Reports feature and SSRS created folders to accomodate this feature. I then experimented with linked reports.

Now I want to undo this feature. I turned off the My Reports feature but the folders remain. The Report Manager refuses to delete them. I found their entries in the ReportServer.Catalog table but don't want to just delete them.

Does anyone know how to remove these folders from the Report Manager?
