Hi, I am a beginner in ASP.NET 2.0 I am creating a simple blog website. I am using a DataReader object to collect all of the entries in the database (in one full sweep) and then display them by adding rows to a table and populating them. I would like to enable paging so that only 5 blog entries at a time are displayed. The user should be able to page backwards and forwards 5 at a time. Please can somebody give me some ideas of how I should do this? Should I read all of the data into some kind of list so that all of the data is then readily available? An arraylist or something? I realise that the DataReader object reads in one continuous stream so I couldn't expect it to read backwards and forwards from the database. I include a portion of my code below which reads the database. Many thanks. Dim objCommand As New SqlCommand objCommand.Connection = objConnection objConnection.Open() objCommand.CommandText = "SELECT BlogID, Date, Blog FROM BlogSite2_Blogs ORDER BY Date DESC" Dim objReader As SqlDataReader = objCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection) Dim dateDateTime As Date Dim strBlogEntry As String Dim intBlogID As Integer Do While objReader.Read() intBlogID = objReader.GetValue(0) dateDateTime = objReader.GetDateTime(1) strBlogEntry = objReader.GetString(2) CreateBlogRow(intBlogID, dateDateTime, strBlogEntry) Loop objReader.Close()
I call the datareader using a sqlCommand that I programmatically build and it accesses the database fine. I can use the exact SQL command that I generate and I can get a result when i run it in SQL Management Studio. When I run the application and try to access the datareader, it throws an exception whose message is quite frustratingly, <column name>, or in this case "image_URL". Anyone have any idea what might be causing such an ambiguous error?
I am getting the following exception when attempting to read from a DataReaderDestination:

If I use the example from SQL Server BOL (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms135917.aspx), and make a new package for the sample in the same project, the sample works. The only thing that I can see that is significantly different between my code and the sample is that my DataReaderDestination has a lot more data in it, but here's the relevant code:
string dtexecArgs;
string dataReaderName;
DtsConnection dtsConnection;
DtsCommand dtsCommand; //IDbCommand
IDataReader dtsDataReader;
DataTable dtsTable;
dtexecArgs = @"/FILE ""C:Documents and Settings heinMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsCA3DataImportToolML3000_IntegrationProjectPackage.dtsx"" ";
dataReaderName = "DataReaderDest";
dtsConnection = new DtsConnection();
dtsConnection.ConnectionString = dtexecArgs;
dtsConnection.Open();
dtsCommand = new DtsCommand(dtsConnection);
dtsCommand.CommandText = dataReaderName;
dtsDataReader = dtsCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.Default); // EXCEPTION HERE

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Hi, I am deploying my web through a web hosting services which provides SQL database support. I got following errors whenever I try to open my webpage,which never happen when I run my web on the local machine. I have created a data reader to loop thru a table and build an update statement. Now I need to execute this statement in the datareader loop but the connection object is in use.
I tried creating another connection object but get an error: "The context connection is already in use."
Is there a way to open another connection while the main context connection is open. Just to make it clear, I do not want to read all the rows into memory first and then call update, it has to happen for each iteration of the datareader.
I have a multiple form project for a Windows CE 5.0 device (Symbol MC3000) written in VB.NET (Visual Studio 2005) using SQL Server Compact 3.5.
If I create the database on the SD Card, the program works fine until the unit is "suspended". When the power resumes, I can still continue to work and save/access data in the database as long as I do not go to another form. If I go to another form, I get an access violation error (0xC0000005).
If the database is installed in main memory the prorgam works properly even after the power is cycled.
Unfortunately, due to the memory size restrictions on the device, there are cases where the database needs to be stored on the SD Card.
Currently the program uses a single "global" SQLCeConnection and the connection is closed prior to the device being powered off. However, each procedure/event in the program uses it's own SQLCeCommand and SQLCeDataReader objects (which are created and closed/disposed prior to the end of the procedure).
I have tried everything I can think of, including OS updates, .NET Compact Framework 2.0 updates and modifications to the program to correct this, but the results are the same.
Would creating a global SQLDataReader and SQLCeCommand object help with this issue or should the way that this is currently being handled work?
For example, the table below, has a foreign key (ManagerId) that points to EmployeeId (primary key) of the same table. -------Employees table-------- EmployeeID . . . . . . . . . . int Name . . . . . . . . . . . nvarchar(50) ManagerID . . . . . . . . . . . int
If someone gave you an ID of a manager, and asked you to get him all employee names who directly or indirectly report to this manager. How can that be achieved?
I am trying to use the DataReader Source to import a table from a PostgresSQL database into a new table in SQL 2005 database. It works for all tables except one, which has over 80,000 records with long text columns. When I limit the import to fraction of records (3,000 to 4,000 records) it works fine but when I try to get all it generates the following errors:

Any idea why it can't create a temp file or why it complains about the "The File exists", which file, where, etc. Any help or alternative suggestions are greatly appreciated. What I am missing or doing wrong here?

Problem:
When adding the DataReader Source component to the package, I cannot assign the Connection Manager. Designer issues the error message:
"The runtime connection manager with the ID "" cannot be found. Verify that the connection manager collection has a connection manager with that ID."
Editing the DataReaderSrc component shows only one row under the Connection Managers tab:
The datareadersrc component editor displays the warning message: "Not all connection managers have been set. Set all connection managers.". Clicking the Refresh button causes the error message to be displayed "The runtime connection manager with the ID "" cannot be found. Verify that the connection manager collection has a connection manager with that ID."
I am prevented from assigning my Connection Manager object the DataReaderSrc.
The package already contains one Connect Manager object:
Provider: .Net Providers/Odbc Data Provider System DSN
I have deployed to production a number of nested packages (parent packages that call child packages) to the SQL msdb via the Save As option rather than building a deployment utility. These packages reference configuration files in a static location off of the c: drive on the production server. In the development environment, when connection changes are made and I run the Reload with Upgrade option the connection manager takes on the new server and user id settings. However, out on the production side I get the following error from the SQL job log:
Cannot load the XML configuration file. The XML configuration file may be malformed or not valid.
As a result the SQL job uses the default connection information which references the development database rather than the production database. I did research the error but found no good solutions. Is there a way to ensure the configuration files are formed correctly and that the packages are correctly referencing the configuration files? We are trying to run the ETL updates via a SQL job.
Hello:How does one pool a connection object? I have the same application runningon 4 different machines, all connecting to the same server/SQL Server 2000instance for DB activity.Some posts have mentioned pooling the connection objects to reduce overhead,but how do I do that for the 4 separate computers.Appreciate any response.Regards,Ryan Kennedy
yo ce folks... Anyone had any trouble using a dataset for return values in a datagridview for the client app?
trying to make this work...
' Open the Connection For SQL Compact Edition
Dim cn As New SqlServerCe.SqlCeConnection("Data Source = " & Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData) & "ffgsCRM.sdf")
Dim cmdProduct As SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand
' create dataset with table
cn.Open()
cmdProduct = cn.CreateCommand
cmdProduct.CommandText = "SELECT ProductDesc AS Description, ProductCost AS Cost, ProductListPrice AS [List Price] FROM Product"
Dim daProduct As New SqlServerCe.SqlCeDataAdapter(cmdProduct)
Dim dtProduct As New Data.DataTable("Product")
daProduct.Fill(dtProduct)
Dim ds As New DataSet
ds.Tables.Add(dtProduct)
'' FILL DATAGRIDVIEW
Me.dbGridProducts.DataSource = ds
I have this working:
' search product description
Dim reqProductSearch As String
reqProductSearch = tstxtSearchDescription.Text
' Open the Connection For SQL Compact Edition
Dim _conn = New SqlCeConnection("Data Source = " & Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData) & "ffgsCRM.sdf")
Dim cmd As New SqlCeCommand()
cmd.Connection = _conn
cmd.CommandText = "select ProductDesc as Description, ProductCost as Cost, ProductListPrice as [List Price] from Product where ProductDesc like '%" & reqProductSearch & "%' ORDER BY ProductDesc"
_conn.Open()
Dim resultSet As SqlCeResultSet
resultSet = cmd.ExecuteResultSet(ResultSetOptions.Scrollable Or ResultSetOptions.Updatable)
I have been writing a custom source adapter that uses a file connection within the connection manager. If I hard-code a specific file then the component works. However if I use a file connection that has an expression defined which updates the connection, for example when you have a for-each loop looping over a set files. The file connection doesn€™t seem to re-evaluate expression each time you access the file connection via the code. Is there something that I am missing or is there a bug?
I was wondering if any others on this list are getting a bug with the Flat File connection object --where in both csv (coma delimited) or flat files (tab delimited) where strange characters(like two bold vertical lines) are appearing in the file viewer while setting up a connection forcing the CRLF to end in the wrong place. They look like two bold vertical lines
Im testing the same files with both the old DTS from SQL Server 2000 and getting no issues which tells me there is a bug in SSIS. Strange thing the bug does not happen with every file I receive, only a few. I€™m wondering if SSIS Flat File Connection object could be a little flaky with respect to how it reads files compared to DTS text connection object.

is it possible to use a single connection object shared by severaltasks where each task is handled by a thread? these tasks call storedprocedures that return record sets, no editing, update or delete.my objective is that db connection is expensive and each user can onlyhave 1 connection object. each user submits a request to the webserver, and the result web page construction consists of a number ofresult sets obtained from several stored procedure from the samedatabase instance.i could obtained my result sets by making each sp call one at a timebut was thinking whether i could instead break up the tasks, create athread for each task that shares the same db connection objectconcurrently. the connection object will be alive until all tasks arecompleted, that is if the final object ive could be achieved in ashorter time. No connection pooling here.i am wondering over questions like:1. within the same db instance, if 2 stored procedures need to accessthe same table, does SQLserver queue-up and service one request at atime.2. would there be any problem using the connection object this way,sharing between multiple theads?3. is it possible that a 'dead-lock' may occur within the DB?of cos this whole idea can be absurd and into the trash if theconnection object doesn't support multi-thread and is queue based inthe first place.pardon me if my SQL server basics is off track. been doing too manyother things.thanks,meng
I built a small package two years ago that uses Flat File Sources to copy in small text data files. Â Each source connection object has a UNC path to flat text files on another server. Â The source system changed, so I opened the package and updated the UNC path in one Connection Manager object, and clicked OK. The Flat File Source Editor that uses this source seemed to be able to see the new location when I clicked "Preview". Â Then I went back to the file source, and the connection had reverted back to the original one. Â it would not save the new UNC path. Â
I am using SQL Server 2012 SP2 with SSDT (run as admin). Â I closed the package in SSDT, edited the connection strings using XMLnotepad, and was then able to open, test, build and deploy the package.
It seems that the Source object will not let itself be changed. Â The other option is to delete it and recreate it, but I didn't want to remap the fields.
First up - my apologies if this is not the right forum for this question. Please let me know if there is a more appropriate one for this question.
I have come across an issue with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition install. It has been running fine since the install (a few months back). And I can still interact (query, update etc) the databases just fine. However, SQL Management Server Studio Express has started to produce an error message when I attempt to connect the Object Explorer.
The error message is shown below.
I have tried to access the link shown in the error message but there is no information provided there.
I can use SQL Management Server Studio Express to run queries on the databases so it would appear that the underlying services are all running OK.
The SQL Server is installed using SQL Authentication only and I have not made any changes to Service accounts or the services themselves. The protocols all appear to be in order too - Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP are all enabled.
I have restarted the SQL services and even rebooted the machine, but to no avail.
I would really appreciate if anyone out there could give me some guidance on what may be causing this issue.
Note: The SQL Server is installed on WinXP Pro SP2 running in a VirtualPC. All apps are release versions (no beta or CTP)

as far as I know from docs and forum datareader is for .NET data in memory. So if a use a complex dataflow to build up some data and want to use this in other dataflow componens - could i use data datareader source in the fist dataflow and then use a datareader souce in the second dataflow do read the inmemoty data from fist transform to do fursther cals ?
how to pass in memory data from one dataflow to the next one (i do not want to rebuild the logic in each dataflow to build up data data ?
Is there a way to do this ? and is the datareader the proper component ? (because its the one and only inmemory i guess, utherwise i need to write to temp table and read from temp table in next step) (I have only found examples fro .NET VB or C# programms to read a datareader, but how to do this in SSIS directly in the next dataflow?
Hi There,This is related to a ms access database but since I use the SqlDataSource control I thought I should post here.I have a project that I was working on with this ms access db and using sql controls, everything was working just finesince one day I started getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" messages when I try to designa query or retrieve a schema, nothing works at design time anymore but at runtime everything is perfect, its a lotof work for me now to create columns,schemas and everything manually, I've tried reinstalling visualstudio, ado componentsbut nothing seems to fix it, did this ever happen to any of you guys?any tip is really appreciated thanks a lot

I'm working in SQL Server 2005 with a database that was migrated to 2005 from SQL Server 2000. I have to alter a trigger on a table for some functionality changes, and when I modify the trigger and then access it through the application the database is working with, I receive this error:
There was a error in the [stored procedure name] procedure. Error Number: -2147217900 Error Description: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The definition of object '[trigger name]' has changed since it was compiled.
[stored procedure name] and [trigger name] are where the actual names appear in the message.
I've tried running sp_recompile on the trigger, stored procedure, and table that are associated with this, and nothing works. I have dropped the trigger, which allows the save process to complete (but doesn't perform the required functionality, of course), and then re-created the trigger, but the error message still comes up. The compatibility level for the database is SQL Server 2000 (80) (as it was migrated from SQL Server 2000 as I mentioned above).
Has anyone seen this, and if so, how can I fix it?
Help! I have posted this before and I had hoped that the VS2005 SP1 would help my problem. It didn't. My code is shown below. I have dropped a sqlconnection, sqldataadapter and a strongly-typed dataset from the toolbox onto the component designer for my page and written my code. It compiles without any errors but at runtine I receive the system error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The error occurs at the first line where the sqldataadapter is mentioned. I have shufflled the code and the error still occurs at first mention of the dataadapter. I have set parameters to a simple string such as "myemail." It hasn't helped. I have used the "Dim" statement as "Dim DaAuthorLogin as System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataadapter and Dim DaAuthorLogin as New ......) at the start of the private sub generated by the event requiring the data. Nothing helps. Here is my simple code to select data from a sqlserver 2000 database. Why do I continue to get this error? I am trying to develop a custom algorithm. I have implemented and tested training methods, however I fail at prediction phase. When I try to run a prediction query against a model created with my algorithm I get:
Executing the query ... Obtained object of type: Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient.AdomdDataReader COM error: COM error: DMPluginWrapper; Object reference not set to an instance of an object.. Execution complete
I know this is not very descriptive, but I have seen that algorith doesn't even executes my Predict(..) function (I can test this by logging to a text file) So the problem is this, when I run prediction query DMPluginWrapper gives exception -I think- even before calling my custom method.
As I said it is not a very descriptive message but I hope I have hit a general issue.
I am trying to send some data back to our as/400 from SQL server. Before I do so I need to delete entries from the table. I have an odbc connection set up and have used it sucessfully in a datareader compoenent but but when I try to use it for a delete SQL task it give me the followign error. what am I doing wrong? I even tried hardcoding in the system name/library name.
Here is my delete sql script DELETE FROM DSSCNTL Where Companycode = 10
TITLE: SQL Task ------------------------------ Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------
When I try and run Report Builder Reports i get this error message "Object reference not set to an instance of an object. "
