Will it be possible to convert a varchar data type column (having values that are numbers or null only) to a numeric data type column having the number values and the null values not being replaced by 0.
Col A Col A
(varchar) (int or numeric)
123 123
124 124
NULL 0 <expected blank>
125 125
I tried using CAST(Col A as int) and it converts the NULL to 0. Will
CAST(ISNULL(ColA,'') as int) work? The reason for this requirement is the value 0 will give different meaning to the data. Any insights will be appreciated.
insert into scn_transaction (sourceSystemName) values(@sourceSystem);
SELECT @txOut = @@identity
Whose purpose is to perform an insert into a table and return me the identity value of the inserted record, which I'll then use throughout the rest of my package. The identity column in the inserted table is numeric(18,0).
I execute the stored proc with the following sql with an OLE DB connection manager:
exec sp_newTransaction ?, ?
The first parameter is a string variable from earlier in the package, and the second is the output parameter. I have the following parameter mappings to the execute sql task:
The proc is correctly called, and the row insesrted, however I get a type conversion error when SSIS attempts to map the return parameter to my package variable... I've tried all sorts of combonations, and can't seem to get it to execute.
At one point I wasn't returning a numeric, but rather an int from the stored proc, and all was well until I went to use the variable in a derived column later in the package, and the type was converted quite incorrectly (a 1 was 77799789080 or some such), indicating a type conversion error likely related to the encoding of the number.
I'd like to keep the datatypes as numeric and make ssis use those - any pointers are greatly appreciated as to what type my package variable should be to allow proper assignment of a sql server numeric type to it.
I am getting a "Syntax error converting the varchar value '10,90' to a column of data type int." error when I run the following procedure:
@myList varchar(200)
SELECT column1 FROM table1 WHERE table1.ID IN (@myList)
When @myList is a single value, I get no errors. However, when @myList is a comma separated list like in the message above, I error out. I am using SQL Server 2000.
How else can I build this list of IDs? Thank you in advance for your comments.
Dear All: I am in the process of developing a code generation tool to generate automatically: 1- Business Layer objects 2- Object Layer objects 3- Data Layer objects
The code follows the same technique used in IssueTracker Starter Kit.
I faced somehting wierd today while trying to convert between SQL Data types to C# data types:
Check the image please, the problem is that, different value number is being given to each column type, by using both: syscolumsn.type and syscolumns.xtype, which one to use ? which is the best used to convert to C# ? Are there any place where data types of SQL Server are being converted to C# data types ?
I am using DTS to import a DB2 table from the mainframe and export the table in text format to a shared folder. I want to convert two fields to a date format yyyy-mm-dd. RELSE_Date is in this format and Updtts is a timestamp coming from the mainframe. The text file is all vchar. In dts here is my query pulling from the mainframe SELECT A.PROD_ORDER_NUMBER, A.DYE_SEQUENCE, A.STYLE, A.COLOR, A.SIZE, A.STATUS_IND, A.STATUS_CODE, A.QUANTITY_REC_DC, B.SHIP_OTFQ_QTY, A.MRP_PACK_CODE, A.LABELS_PRINTED, date(A.RELSE_DATE) as RELSE_DATE, date(A.UPDTTS) as UPDtts, A.LOCATION FROM DB2.WP1_PO_CUST_REQ A, DB2.WP1_DYE_LOT_REQ B WHERE A.PROD_ORDER_NUMBER = B.PROD_ORDER_NUMBER AND A.DYE_SEQUENCE = B.DYE_SEQUENCE AND A.STYLE = B.STYLE AND A.COLOR = B.COLOR AND A.SIZE = B.SIZE AND (A.PROD_ORDER_NUMBER LIKE '__K____') When I parse the query it accepts it. When I run the DTS I get an error stating (SQL STATE 220077 SQLCODE -180) The sting representation of a datetime value has invalid syntax. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to convert these fields before the text file is exported or another output format that is similar to .dat in comma delimited format? Thank you.
I have a table named 'Table1' which contains a column 'Name'. The data type of column [Name] is varchar(50).
When i try to change its datatype to binary by trying following code
ALTER TABLE Table1 Alter Column [Name] Binary(5000)
It gives following error.
" Creation of table 'bp_MAIN' failed because the row size would be 10021, including internal overhead. This exceeds the maximum allowable table row size, 8060. "
So, how can i change the datatype of this column ?

here is my problem: i have a variable @sid_x as binary(16) = 0x4CF254AB0BA5D411AA3E00508BC5C413 and i want to use it as argument in sp_addlogin statement.
select @sqlcmd = 'sp_addlogin "test", @sid = ' + @sid_t /* this doesn't work, because @sid_t is binary... */
select @sqlcmd = 'sp_addlogin "test", @sid = ' + convert (char (20), @sid_x) /* this doesn't work either, because it doesn't convert to binary text */
my question, is there any way i can get @sid_x in follow text format 0x4CF254AB0BA5D411AA3E00508BC5C413 ?
Can anyone tell me how to calculate datatype conversion times in SQL Server 7? I have a varchar (15) field that I tried to convert to integer using the table design GUI in Enterprise Manager. The table holds about 72,000,000 records about 1k apiece in size.
It's been running for about an hour now with no seeable results. In Performance Monitor I don't see any page reads happening, so is this indicative that the process died? Enterprise Manager is no longer responsive - even if I open another session.
I'd like to know how long I can reasonably expect this conversion to take. Also, how can I abort this request safely if I want to?
I am facing a problem while using SQL Server with VB application.Implicit conversion from datatype text to nvarchar is not allowed.Use the convert function to run this query. When i see the trace file, i see one stored procedure called but nolines of code get executed, and immediately after that the ROLLBACKTRANSACTION occurs and the applications fails. But to my surprise i am able to do the same thing on a differentmachine using the same application and the same database on the sameserver with the same user id.Can anyone explain the reason of occurance of this problem.I require this very urgently, so i will be oblized if anyone can comeup with a quick response.Kind Regards,Amit Kumar
Here is a description of the issue I'm facing about decimal datatype conversion from DB2 to SSIS throught Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2.
I first discovered it when I tried to use a LookUp trans. and selected a decimal typed field. I was unable to validate it and clicking the OK button threw the error copied below:
TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio ------------------------------
Error at Data Flow Task [DTS.Pipeline]: The "output column "MFIXFRA" (317)" has a value set for length, precision, scale, or code page that is a value other than zero, but the data type requires the value to be zero.
Exception from HRESULT: 0xC0204019 (Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSPipelineWrap)
------------------------------ BUTTONS:
OK ------------------------------
Some workarounds on this issue led me to two other strange behaviours:
- If I create a dataflow task to perform a raw copy of a DB2 table to a brand new table in SQLServer destination (by clicking "new" instead of choosing an existing destination table), generated "create table" script for decimal fields is quite different from source table. For example, a source field declared Dec(15,2) is translated as Dec(29,5), and so on.
- Quite same behaviour if I try to derive a column using as derived column trans. If the source column is a decimal, it's scale and precision are interpreted ramdomly.
Currently, we are facing a serious problem of conversion from Sql Query to Semantic Query and we are looking for any API or Component that handles this conversion process.
Requirement Details:
I'd like to tell the story happened which lead us to this requirement. We want to convert Shazam Reports (SRW) to Reporting Services (RDL) reports that support Report Builder (semantic queries). So, we planned to convert the SRW query structure into a SQL query structure and later to Semantic Query, which is recognized by the Report Builder.
In that process, we've successfully developed a parser component that parses the SRW's query structure into standard Sql query structure but now we struggling, as we don't know how to convert an sql query into semantic query.
We are running out of time and any information towards the solution is a great help to us.
I have a sql server express 2005 database with a table named Events with a column named Date (datetime datatype). I want a query that will display all rows that are either current or future but not past. I suspect there is a simple way of doing this. As a Newbie searching archived threads this is what I have come up with so far. I determine the number of days from present:SELECT DATEDIFF(day, Date, GETDATE()) AS NumberOfDays FROM EventsThis yields number of days from present with positive numbers in the past and negative numbers in the future. Thus setting a WHERE clause to <= 0 would limit my results to present or future events. Something like this:SELECT * FROM EventsWhere DATEDIFF(day, Date, GETDATE()) AS NumberOfDays <= 0The error message states: "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'AS'"This feels like a clumsy way to approach this problem, but I have to start where I am.Any suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.
we have a table like thisOrderNo OrderDate1 2005-11-04 01:12:47.00022005-11-19 04:26:54.00032005-11-16 11:03:23.00042005-11-21 15:58:37.00052005-11-24 21:45:04.000what will be the sql query, so that the Result look like this.only to neqlect the time factor from datetime data type .OrderNoOrderDate1 2005-11-0422005-11-1932005-11-1642005-11-2152005-11-24
I have this query: SELECT Trim(Left([Display Name],InStr([Display Name],",")-1))+Trim(Mid([Display Name],InStr([Display Name],",")+2,1)) AS UserName, dbo_Employee.[Display Name] FROM dbo_Employee; Works good in access, but when trying to put it un sql server, it comes up with errors. I know mid is substring, I just don't know what trim and instr are in mssql.
Need some quick help here.. The data I got from the text file use the "04/11/2007" date format and the StockDate in MS-SQL use the datetime datatype.
My understanding is that the "04/11/2007" will default to the 04/11/2007 12:00 am" format in MS-SQL.
So, when I use the sql query, how do search only for the date part of the data in MS-SQL and match it to the data from text file? I tried this SQL Query below.
--snip-- SELECT RawID FROM tblPurchaseRaw WHERE VIN = '" & sVin.ToString.Trim & "' AND StockDate = '" & dStockDate.ToString.Trim & "' --snip--
That way, if I get a row then I know the data is there. If I don't get a row then I know the data is not there.
Bold: I get it now. It is all automatic as MS-SQL does it automatically...
Hi, I've created a SQL union query that grabs the top three values of a test and puts the results together on one line item by a recordnumber. The only problem is, one value is generating the error: " Syntax error converting the varchar value '=' to a column of data type int." This field is an operator field, so it will only display operator values ( <, >, = ). Everything seems to work BUT the union join on that column, which is a varchar data type. I need this union to work, and Im frustrated that I can't seem to figure out why I can't get the logic to work. Can someone take a look at this and help me with it? The union query looks like this:
exec('select RecordNumber,Sum(rank1) as HbA1CRank1,max(Operator1) as HbA1COperator1,sum(contentValue1) as HbA1CContentvalue1,max(dos1) as HbA1CDOS1,Sum(rank2) as HbA1CRank2,max(Operator2) as HbA1COperator2,sum(contentValue2) as HbA1CContentvalue2,max(dos2) as HbA1CDOS2,Sum(rank3) as HbA1CRank3,max(Operator3) as HbA1COperator3,sum(contentValue3) as HbA1CContentvalue3,max(dos3) as HbA1CDOS3 from (SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100 PERCENT recordnumber, Rank AS rank1, cast(Operator as varchar) as Operator1, contentValue AS contentvalue1, DOS AS DOS1, 0 AS rank2, 0 as Operator2, 0 AS contentvalue2, 0 AS DOS2, 0 AS rank3, 0 as Operator3, 0 AS contentvalue3, 0 AS DOS3FROM (SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw1 WHERE vw1.rECORDnUMBER = vw2.rECORDnUMBER AND vw1.ItemCode = vw2.ItemCode AND vw1.Operator = vw2.Operator AND vw1.DOS > vw2.DOS) AS Rank, * FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw2) vw3WHERE (Rank = 0)ORDER BY RecordNumber UNION SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100 PERCENT recordnumber, 0 AS rank1, 0 as Operator1, 0 AS contentvalue1, 0 AS DOS1, Rank AS rank2, cast(Operator as varchar) as Operator2, contentValue AS contentvalue2, DOS AS DOS2, 0 AS rank3, 0 as operator3, 0 AS contentvalue3, 0 AS DOS3FROM (SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw1 WHERE vw1.rECORDnUMBER = vw2.rECORDnUMBER AND vw1.ItemCode = vw2.ItemCode AND vw1.Operator = vw2.Operator AND vw1.DOS > vw2.DOS) AS Rank, * FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw2) vw3WHERE (Rank = 1)ORDER BY RecordNumber UNION SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100 PERCENT recordnumber, 0 AS rank1, 0 as Operator1, 0 AS contentvalue1, 0 AS DOS1, 0 AS rank2, 0 as operator2, 0 AS contentvalue2, 0 AS DOS2, rank AS rank3, cast(Operator as varchar) as operator3, contentvalue AS contentvalue3, DOS AS DOS3FROM (SELECT (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw1 WHERE vw1.rECORDnUMBER = vw2.rECORDnUMBER AND vw1.ItemCode = vw2.ItemCode AND vw1.Operator = vw2.Operator AND vw1.DOS > vw2.DOS) AS Rank, * FROM tblDiabetic_HgbA1C_Total vw2) vw3WHERE (Rank = 2)ORDER BY RecordNumber )tblHgA1C group by RecordNumber ')GO Can anyone help? It looks right to me, I just can't figure out why the error keeps coming up = Thank you!

I am trying to construct a query in Query Analyzer (with SQL Server 2000), but am getting an error regarding "implicit conversion."
Here is the query:
SELECT dbo.AUCTION.EbayNum, dbo.AUCTION.EndDate, DATENAME([month], dbo.AUCTION.EndDate) + ' ' + DATENAME([year], dbo.AUCTION.EndDate) AS [PmtMonth], dbo.LOT.Description, dbo.AUCTION.WinBid, PaidStat = CASE dbo.AUCTION.PaidStatus WHEN 0 THEN '' ELSE 'PAID' END, PaidAmt = CASE dbo.AUCTION.PaidStatus WHEN 0 THEN '' ELSE dbo.AUCTION.WinBid END FROM dbo.AUCTION INNER JOIN dbo.LOT ON dbo.AUCTION.LotNum = dbo.LOT.LotNum WHERE (LEN(dbo.AUCTION.Winner) > 0)
The error occurs in the PaidAmt CASE statment: "Implicit conversion from data type varchar to money is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query."
Why is there an implicit conversion going on? And how can I fix it?
Hi Friends, Need ur help desperately. I am stuck with one of the queries which i had written in Oracle and need the same in SQL Server. Please have a look at the following query :
select * from r_tin_1099_info where instr(translate( nm_ctrl_cd , '~!@#$%^&*()_+}{":?><`-=]['''';/., ', '*******************************' ),'*') > 0;
Basically my purpose is to replace the values in column NM_CTRL_CD having wild card characters with '*' and then select this rows to display.
However i am not able to run the same query in SQL Server since TRANSLATE is not a built in func. I have tried a lot to replace it but could only one func : REPLACE . But the same will not replace any one of the above wild characters but will replace the entire pattern. Please note that it should be able replace even if one of the wild card characters are present in the string and not necessarily the entire pattern shown above.
please reply ASAP since i am working and need this query to fix a defect.
Trying to run a query to get total number of direct mail campaigns by company. Would like the totals to be (1) total number of direct mail campaigns (there are 2 types) (2) total number of direct mail campaigns type direct mail (3) total number of direct mail campaigns type publication
Below is the query I put together with INNER JOIN:
SELECT Agency.PrimaryAgencyName, COUNT(Distinct Campaigns.DirectMailID) AS TotalCampaigns, COUNT(Distinct DirectMail.Type) AS TotalDirectMail
FROM Agency INNER JOIN (Clients INNER JOIN (Campaigns INNER JOIN DirectMail ON DirectMail.DirectMailID = Campaigns.DirectMailID) ON Clients.ClientID = Campaigns.CampaignID) ON Agency.AgencyID = Clients.AgencyID
GROUP BY Agency.PrimaryAgencyName, DirectMail.Month, DirectMail.Type ORDER BY Agency.PrimaryAgencyName
When I run the query, I recent the below error:
Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value '1683 1-15017' to data type int.
The value mentioned in the above error message is the ClientID.
Below are the tables for reference (bold for entity name and underline for PK) and datatypes
I have this problem of inserting my query into database field. My code is as of below. The @AVERAGESCORE parameter is derived from Dim averagescore As Single = (122 * 1 + 159 * 2 + 18 * 3 + 3 * 4 + 0 * 5) / (122 + 159 + 18 + 3 + 0) and the value returned is (averagescore.toString("0.00")) However, I have error inserting the averagescore variable into a field of datatype float during the transaction. I have no problems when using non transactional sql insert methods. What could be the problem? Try Dim i As Integer For i = 0 To arraySql.Count - 1 myCommand = New SqlCommand Dim consolidatedobjitem As ConsolidatedObjItem = arraySql(i) myCommand.CommandText = sqlStr myCommand.Connection = myConnection myCommand.Transaction = myTrans With myCommand.Parameters

I have a field in a table that stores date of birth. The field's datatype is char(6) and looks like this: 091703 (mmddyy). I want to convert this value to a datetime datatype.
What is the syntax to convert char(6) to datetime?
I'm converting an ASP system from using msaccess to SQL Server as the db engine, and I'm stumped on the following query
update timecard set TcdDate = #3/18/05#
TcdDate is defined as a date/time type
It will not run with the date bracketed by # signs, and when I take them out, 1/1/1900 is stored in the dbs. Is there a different symbol to bracket the date with or should I be using a function to convert the date?
