Dataware Performance Degradation - Urgent.

Apr 2, 2008

Thanks in advance !

We are having a situation (PROBLEM) with our DW - SQL SERVER 2000 SP4 ENT X86, it suddenly slowed a lot.

CPU Usage : 20%

IO : AVR DISK QUEUE LENGHT Between 1.5 and 2 (rarelly spikes (20/40)).

MEM : 8 GB, 6GB to SQL SERVER.

All the code that is running against the DB is fined tuned ( Most tables are Index Seeked with Clustered Indexes ), biggest table 450 GB.

No Lock Waits ( Except the main process(spid) that is showed has locked by it's own spid ( latch_xx (sh,ix)).

I guess that the problem is related to storage, because it is only doing 1-3MB sec (sometimes 20MB/sec).

PerfMon ( PROCESS SQLSERVER ( DISK Read Bytes ( between 1-3MB sometimes 20 MB/s), Disk Bytes Write Bytes/Sec same as Reads).

No more sql server instances or other software hogging the server.

I can't understand why the SQL SERVER is never using the IO it is used to use (25MB/S).

I don't see any DISK QUEUE on the Partitions that are used to store the datafiles/logfiles)

No Pages splits in the SQL SERVER ACCESS METHODS.

Sometimes I get about 1 GB in dirty buffers.

98 % Cache Hit Ratio.

ALL points to IO contention, but the counters from windows don't indicate this.

All help is REALLY appreciated.

Best Regards.

Performance Degradation ?

May 20, 2008

Hi,

I have an ASP.NET application used in my university for student management. Any now and then the application throws an error like "DataBinding: 'System.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name XXXX" where XXX may be different. Of course that this properties exist and they are generated ok by the stored procedures.

After an recopilation everything seems to work nomally for a while.

I did not succeed in identifying the moment when the error is thrown but I suspect some reports in sql reporting services that lead to a server overload ??? that also is strange because the server specifications are quite ok, I think:

- OS: Windows 2003 R2, 64 bit
- SQL Server 2005 Standard, 64 bit
- 8 GB RAM
- Intel Xeon E 5345 2.33 Ghz (2 quad-core)

I would need help for:
- identifying the moment when this error occurs and _why_
- how could I repair it
- how could I distribute the load on more cores (from time to time Process Explorer from Sysinternals shows that only 1 core from 8 is working at full capacity)

Thanks,
Catalin

Performance Degradation - Any Ideas?

Apr 11, 2001

Hi all,

Up until recently one of our SQL 7 databases has been running quite happily. However over the last 2 weeks the users have started to complain about performance levles, operations that would normally take 2-3 seconds now run for about 40 seconds. I have rebuilt all indexes and even ran update statistics althought both the 'Auto create Statistics' and 'Auto update statistics' are turned on. This failed to help so I ended up stopping and starting SQL server but still no luck.

I have run a DBCC SHOWCONTIG and the fragmentation is well within acceptable levels, scan desnity is at 94%. The only other thing I can think of is to reboot the NT server as it has been up for 67 days now. Can anyone else think of anything I might have overlooked?

All replies welcome.

Thanks.

Table Size And Performance Degradation

Oct 21, 2007

Hello,

Working with SQL Server 2000, I have a table with the following structure:
ID (INT)
userID (INT, foriegn key)
productID (INT)
productQTY (DECIMAL(5,2))
purchaseDate(smalldatetime)

I have about a 1000 users, entering about 20-30 rows per day each, i.e ~20,000 - 30,000 new rows per day. The table might be queried with a simple "SELECT" for the products a user ordered per day or per time frame (purchaseDate column).
My question (finally) is - when should I expect to see performance degradation? Is there anything I can do to prevent it (i.e splitting this table somehow to several tables)?

Thank you all in advance

Performance Degradation On Data Transfer

Jul 20, 2005

Hello guys,Wonder if any of you could help me out here. I have just created annew empty database and imported data from another database into it.This was done with the import wizard from MMC.First thing that I noticed was the size difference, the old databasewas well over 1GB, but the new one was only about 400MB.Second thing I've noticed, and this is the problem, is that accessingthe new (smaller) database instead of the old one causes a huge speeddegradation, about 5 times slower than the old version. We are using MS SQL Server 7. Any help would be very gratefullyreceived.RegardsGethyn

Performance Degradation After Replication Rolled Out

Dec 14, 2006

Hi all.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

We recently created transactional replication to hopefully improve performance issues we were expereincing. The replication is between 2 SQL Servers (2000), and since we have introduced the replication, the performance has degraded considerably.

I will try and explain the scenario.

We have a primary db that our internal users use and we also have the newly replicated db that our website and another application use. The users are complaining that the website and the internal application is extremely slow and I was just wondering if it is possible to do an Index Tuning on both the primary db and replicated db based on trace files so as to create new indexes or would this have an impact on the replication?

Thanks in advance.

Dataware House Query Help !

Jan 26, 2008

Hi pals,

I need some help from u.
This is datawarehousing related stuff.
I am having a source table as "test" and target table as "trg".
I need to extract the data in required format as per below loading instructions and then load the data into "trg" table.
Below sample data is only given one zipcode. There can be several codes.

drop table test

create table test
(
currentyear int,
district varchar(10),
school varchar(10),
rollno int,
zipcode varchar(10),
flag1_handicapped char(1),
flag2_disadvantaged char(1),
status varchar(10),
relation varchar(10)
)
/* inserted 11 rows */
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','Y','Y','E','R' )
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','R' )
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','N','N','E','NR ')
insert into test values(2005,'D1','S1',101,'530024','Y','Y','E','NR ')

select * from test

--- Structure of the target table
create table trg
(
cyear int,
district varchar(10),
school varchar(10),
RollNo int,
zipcode varchar(10),
type varchar(20), /* This is an extra column with hard coded values which we need to assume as Total,flag1_handicapped,flag2_Disadvantaged.For Every unique zipcode i need to GROUP BY these 3 values.
These values never come from the source table i.e "test".But we can make use of the 2 source columns "flag1_handicapped" & "flag2_Disadvantaged"*/
actaul_cnt int,
empl_related int,
empl_not_related int,
modified_date datetime
)

-- The below table shows what values should get loaded into trg table

----------------------------------------------------------------------
trg table columnvalue to be loaded Description
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
cyear test.currentyear
districttest.district
schooltest.school
rollnotest.rollno
zipcodetest.zipcode
type /* here we to load 3 rows with 3 values
This table contains some calculated columns. such as "actual_cnt","empl_related","empl_not_related" and so on...
Every calculation should be grouped by this "type" column. For reference the you can see the bottom output rows how they should look like.
The 3 valid values for this type column is "Total","flag1_handicapped","Disadavantaged".
"Total" means = All the records which satisfies the calculation.
"flag1_handicapped" means = All the records which statisfies the calculation and have test.flag1_handicapped = 'Y'
"flag2_Disadvantaged" means = All the records which satisfies the calculation and have test.disadvanatged = 'Y'*/

actaul_cnt This is a calculated column. The calc is as follows:
count of records grouped by currentyear,district,school,zipcode,type(flag1_han dicapped,flag2_Disadvantaged,total)

empl_relatedThis is again calculated column. The calc is as follows.
count of records where status='E' and relation = 'R' grouped by currentyear,district,school,zipcode,type(flag1_han dicapped,flag2_Disadvantaged,total)

empl_not_related This is again calculated column. The calc is as follows.
count of records where status='E' and relation = 'NR' grouped by currentyear,district,school,zipcode,type(flag1_han dicapped,flag2_Disadvantaged,total)

modified_date getdate()

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the sample template which i felt like using to load the data. We need to modify this query littlt bit accordingly as per above rules.

select
currentyear as "CYear",
district as "District",
school as "School",
rollno as "RollNo",
zipcode as "zipcode",
count(*) "actaul_count",
sum(case when (status='E' and relation='R') then 1 else 0 end) "Emp_Related",
sum(case when (status='E' and relation='NR') then 1 else 0 end) "Emp_Not_Related",
getdate() "Date"
from test
group by currentyear,
district,
school,
rollno,
zipcode

/* Using the above query we need to load 3 rows into below target table whose structure is defined as follows */

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Expected Output Rows using above sample data
----------------------------------------------------
CYEAR|DISTRICT|SCHOOL|ROLLNO|ZIPCDE| TYPE |ACTUALCOUNT| EMPL_RELATED |EMPL_NOT_RELATED |MODIFIED_DT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2005 | D1 | S1 | 101 | 530024 | Total | 11 | 2 | 9 | 2002-01-26
2005 | D1 | S1 | 101 | 530024 | flag1_handicapped | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2002-01-26
2005 | D1 | S1 | 101 | 530024 | flag2_Disadvantaged | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2002-01-26

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But using above SELECT,i am able to get only row as output that to i am not able to show the "type" column in the output

2005 | D1 | S1 | 101 | 530024 | 11 | 2 | 1 | 2002-01-26 12:57:53.420 |

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically i am not getting how to build the Group by clause and displaying the type code using above rules.
Can anyone help me out in solving the problem.
Do we need to perform any UNION ALL ON test.flag1_handicapped and test.flag2_Disadvantaged columns.?
This is totally seems out of box for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Execution Plan Degradation

Mar 24, 2008

Hi all,

I am experiencing performance problems with one of my stored procedures. When the stored procedure is first compiled an executed, it behaves as expected (it usually takes 1 or 2 seconds to complete). But its performace it is degradated, so in 1 day, it usually takes 120 seconds to complete !!!. Once the stored procedure is compiled, its performance it is then the expected.

It is a complex stored procedure with two integer parameters with only one select, but composed by multiple views and sub-queries. We have been trying to break the query into small pieces using temporary tables but without success. The SQL Profiler shows an unusual number of reads when it goes wrong (more than a million reads).

I think the problem is in the execution plan. I know than compiling the stored procedure, the problem is fixed, but I do not know exactly when and why it starts to happen.

The stored procedure is running under the following configuration:

- Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition (64-bit).
- Version: 9.00.1399.06
- RAM 16 MB
- 8 CPUs

Anyone has any ideas or possible solutions?

Thanks in advance,

Carlos.

Performance Issue In SSRS--Urgent

Mar 13, 2008

Hi,
In my report i have got 10 columns to disply out of which 8 are direct pull and rest two are calculated(count of column).
All the 8 columns are used as parameters. when i open the report all should take default values and report should be generated. This is done.
In BIDS this report is generated i 5 sec approx.
But when i view it in ReportViewer it takes 30 sec approx to display the same.
Table has maximum of 4000 records.
And two of the Parameters out of 8 have 4000 values.
Is there a scope to get the performance at par with BIDS environment.

Extremely Poor Query Performance - Identical DBs Different Performance

Jun 23, 2006

Hello Everyone,I have a very complex performance issue with our production database. Here's the scenario. We have a production webserver server and adevelopment web server. Both are running SQL Server 2000.I encounted various performance issues with the production server with aparticular query. It would take approximately 22 seconds to return 100rows, thats about 0.22 seconds per row. Note: I ran the query in singleuser mode. So I tested the query on the Development server by taking abackup (.dmp) of the database and moving it onto the dev server. I ranthe same query and found that it ran in less than a second.I took a look at the query execution plan and I found that they we'rethe exact same in both cases. Then I took a look at the various index's, and again I found nodifferences in the table indices. If both databases are identical, I'm assumeing that the issue is relatedto some external hardware issue like: disk space, memory etc. Or couldit be OS software related issues, like service packs, SQL Serverconfiguations etc. Here's what I've done to rule out some obvious hardware issues on theprod server:1. Moved all extraneous files to a secondary harddrive to free up spaceon the primary harddrive. There is 55gb's of free space on the disk.2. Applied SQL Server SP4 service packs3. Defragmented the primary harddrive4. Applied all Windows Server 2003 updatesHere is the prod servers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.67GHZTotal Physical Memory 2GB, Available Physical Memory 815MBWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1Here is the dev serers system specs:2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz2GB DDR2-SDRAMWindows Server 2003 SE /w SP1I'm not sure what else to do, the query performance is an order ofmagnitude difference and I can't explain it. Urgent Urgent Please.(Access SQL Pass Through Queries)

Jul 6, 2000

Hello,
I am facing a huge problem in my sql server database using access as a front end.The main problem is trying to execute queries "views" ,since they reside on sql server now,and using variables or parameters in reports and forms to filter on this query.
Ex.
how can the following be implemented using the same query but in sql server?
Access
------
SELECT MAT_Charts.YYYYMM
FROM MAT_Charts
WHERE ((([Area_Code] & "-" & [GROUP_CODE])=[Reports]![MAT_Chart_C1].[MAT_Key]))
GROUP BY MAT_Charts.YYYYMM;

It is specifically this statement in which I am interested:
[GROUP_CODE])=[Reports]![MAT_Chart_C1].[MAT_Key]))

Thank you very much for your concern.

I need to know how to import the information direct into the db rather than displaying it on the page, ive tried but im really new to this and cant get it to work.  I cant use DTS or bulk insert as the server this will go on doesnt have sql on it, the db is an MDF file so is transportable with the app.
Thanks for your help

Urgent

May 3, 2002

Hello,

I've a bactch file that is ran by the user and it looks for files and if it doesnot exist it waits for it and when it exsits, through isql it truncates the table and bcp in the file. In bcp files the loginname used in isql has dbo rights to truncate the table and the batch file also has password. The user who runs the script can also view the batch file and can know the password, Is there any way I could rewrite it so that the user cann't view the password or other way like SQL DMO or DTS package

Any help is appreciated

Thanks
Rea

Hello,

I've a table which has clustered index on one column and I tried to run begin transaction and then 2000 insert statements and then commit transaction, the transaction took 15 min and then it hung up the table, I could not access the table I had to stop the process, the only info I received was the table had 4517 locks, I've no clue how it got so many locks, there was db backup running as I had scheduled 15 min backup. could anyone help me that inside each open transaction how many insert statement is advisible and how many maximum locks does sql server works on a table and what could have gone wrong in my situation.

Thanks
