I am trying to convert date from a character string field 12 to another database which has smalldatetime. Is there a way to do this. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2005. The database was converted from MS Access 2003 to SQL Express by using the upsize wizard.
I would like to store the current date & time in a column in a table. This column is a smalldatetime column called 'lastlogin'.
The code I'm using is:

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?

Is it possible to have SQL Server recognize the following character field as a date using convert or cast (or anything else):
2001-03-25-02.27.55.365252
so that I can do date comparisons such as
select * from table where [char in above format] < getdate()
SQL Server 2000
Used to know how to do this but am having no luck today. I have data coming in from a .txt file that gives me char strings for dates, e.g. 02242003 for Feb. 2, 2003.
Need to whomp this into small datetime with the whole convert/cast thing but I guess I've previously only gone the other way--smalldatetime to char.

I am placing DateTime into SQL using an ASP.NET form. The date should be formatted dd/mm/yyyy hh/mm/ss.
I am getting the error below. Is there any way to convert the format of the DateTime function from the ASP.NET end?

Hi, I'm making a webapplication in C# with MSSQL as database.
I've created a form to do an advanced search on books. The user can type in name, author, .... and he can also mark 2 dates from to Calendar objects (I made sure date one can not be bigger than date 2). I'm using smalldatetime as DBtype. That's the error I get by the way. It also appears when I do a search and I don't use the date function... for example when I only fill in the title textbox and I don't select any dates from the calendars...

The bold sections are giving me the error message. The query works as written above, butis only evaluating on one date, contained in hqeff. However, when I try to modify the second date, HQDIS, by casting it the same way as the one before it:

I get the error message. I need to select based on both dates (hqeff AND HQDIS), but cannot seem to be able to it.... Both fields are of type Dedimal, with a length of 8, and dates stored in them look like: 20071003 (YYYYMMDD).
Any suggestions?

Recently i traspased a database from sql server 2000 in spanish to sql server 2005 in english. I change the language of the user sa to spanish and the database is in spanish. . The problem is our dateformat is dmy, i try to force with set dateformat dmy, but always i execute a stored procedure that have a date as input it fail. The error is:

This stored procedure in sql server 2000 in spanish not have any problems. For this reason i think the problem is in the configuration.

I'm scrambling to complete a project and ran into an int to char problem. I'm sure, in my haste, I'm doing something stupid. Here is an example of what I'm trying to do but it doesn't convert as expected. I want the SEQ_NBR2 value to convert from 4 to 0000004.

I have data tables that include ZIP code, as char(5). The values looklike integers, but they are padded with leading zeroes to fill out 5characters, '00234'.There are SPs to look up data, with @Zip char(5) among the parameters.Some users call these with integer values, @Zip = 234, and SQL makesthe conversion. Is it necesary to add the leading zeroes in the SP --@Zip=RIGHT('00000'+@Zip,5) -- or would SQL find this match? (234 ='00234'). I am trying to convert a single code page MS Server database into a unicode database, using the unicode data types,NCHAR, NVARCHAR, NTEXT. The problem is that in the original database, indexes and constraints have been defined on the tables whose configurations need to be changed. As a result, the ALTER TABLE command fails. Are there any other alternative solutions?
Also, data from the old database needs to be preserved. The objective is to create a unicode database which keeps the old data intact as well as accepts the new data in unicode.

I have to import data from Excel file to an SQL Server Database.
One of the Excel Worksheet columns it's number (with max value of 4550204008914630000), I will import the column to a char 21 database field. Using a DTS to do the work, when I import that column it will convert the data in something like 4.5502041E+18.
Can you give me some help for the DTS.

Hi there.
I'm trying to extract data from my SQL server & everything in the script I've got is working (extracting correct data) except for one field - which is for the most part it's off by +2 days (on a few occasions - I see it off by just +1 day or even +3, but it's usually the +2 days).
I'm told that it's due to the conversion formula - but - since SQL is not my native language, I'm at a bit of a loss.
The DB table has the date field stored as a type: CHAR (as opposed to 'DATE')
Can anyone out there help?

Hi guys/ladies I'm still having some trouble formatting a select statement correctly.
I am using a sqldatasource control on an aspx page. It is connecting via odbc string to an Informix database.
Here is my select statement cut down to the most basic elements.
SELECT commentFROM informix.ipr_stucomWHERE (comment > 70)
The column "comment" contains student grades ranging from 0-100 and the letters I, EE, P, F, etc. Therefore the column is of a char type. This is a problem because I cannot run the above statement without hitting an alpha record and getting the following error
"Character to numeric conversion error"
How can I write this statement where it will work in the datasource control and have it only look at numeric values and skip the alpha values?
I have tried case with cast and isnumeric... I don't think that I have the formating correct.
I have also used:
WHERE (NOT (comment = ' I' OR comment = ' EE' OR comment = ' NG' OR comment = ' WP' OR comment = ' WF' OR comment = ' P' OR comment = ' F'))
This works but is very clunky and could possibly break if other letters are input in the future. There has to be a better way.I am sorry for my ignorance and thanks again for your help.

Please, is there any way to change the date format of a smalldatetime column of a table in SQL Server Express?
What I mean is that the default date format for a column which type is smalldatetime is "MM/dd/yyyy" but I'm developing a localized application and the date format that I would like to use is "dd/MM/yyyy", so I would like to know is if there any way to change this.
I know that I could write some code in my application in order to do the conversion, but I would like to avoid this because I'm using the databinding property of the control and if I have to write a piece of code in order to do the conversion, I will loose this functionality.
I'm currently using WindowsXP SP2, SQL Server Express 2005, SQL Server Management Studio Express and VB.Net 2005 Express Edition. All applications including the OS are USA English version. The application that I'm writing is being localized to PT-BR (Brazilian Portuguese).
Any help and suggestions are very welcomed.

I have the following
Column Name : [Converted Date]
Data Type : varchar(50)
When I try and do month around the [Converted Date] I get the following error message
“Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string.”
My Query is
SELECT
month([Created Date])
FROM [FDMS_PartnerReporting].[Staging].[Salesforce_MarketingReporting]
SELECT * ,[Due]
FROM [Events]
Where Due >= getdate() +90
This returns the error: Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string
Why would this be? How to cast or convert this so that it will work?

Basically the above is a very common requirement, please comment on my solution which I've arrived at by searching through the web; -
In summary I have used 3 SSIS components these are "Flat File Source", "Derived Column" and "SQL Server Destination".
1) File Connections Manager Editor
1.1) Within File Connections Manager Editor; -
Name the data type e.g. "INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC"
and assign a type to the data type e.g. string[DT_STR]
1.2) Click on the Preview button to ensure the expected text is assigned to the expected data type.
2) Derived Column Transformation Editor
2.1) Assign Derived Column Name, e.g.
INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE
2.2) Select <add as new column> within Derived Column.
2.3) Enter the conversion Expression, e.g. ; -
2.3.1)
(SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,8,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,5,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,1,4))
2.3.2)
Since the above conversion is such a common task I suggest that Service Pack 3 of SQL Server 2005 delivers the following functionality; -
STRINGTODATE ('YYYYMMDD',INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC)
2.4) Select "database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP] " as Data Type.
2.5) Within the Mappings tab of the SQL Destination Editor have; -
Input Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE and
Destination Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE.
Please comment on the above, I will then pass on my suggestion to Microsoft.
