Hi,
We are migrating our database from DB2 8 to SQL Server 2005. We have date and time saperate columns in DB2. For example, Date_of_birth, Store_sun_open_time, Store_sun_close_time etc. For date we are using datetime. For time what datatype should we use in SQL Server?
Thanks
Prashant

01/02/2015
01/01/2015
12/31/2014
12/28/2014
For some reason, I recall having read that SQL Server 2005 would supporta datatype that represented date, but not time. (This would be usefulfor storing things like birthday, where you usually don't care about thetime of day). But I've got SQL Server 2005 installed, and there's nosuch datatype to be found.Is this something that might be released in a Service Pack, or is itjust not going to happen?
View 3 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have a requirement to be able to select and group records by the date portion of a datetime field. ie ignore the time when grouping so that all records lodged on a particular day are seen together.
I have been able to do this by
- converting the datetime data to the number of days since a given date
- inserting this into a temporary table
- retrieving the the data from the temporary table
- convert the data back to a date using DATEPART to display dd/mm/yy
This then gives me the data grouped as required but seems to be a very difficult solution - Is there an easier way??
Thanks in advance

I want to display only the date part of a date field which contains both date & time information.
For example I have the value '2013-11-14 00:00:00.000' in my result set, and ideally I would like to show only '2013-11-14'.
I have looked up the datepart() command, however I can't work out how to return all parts of the date, rather than just the year, month, or day.
Here is my delema:
I have data that I have transfered from Access2000 to SQL2000 without issue. However, in my data from Access I have a date field that has just date. When brought into SQL2000 it is given a timestamp as well. According to documentation, if no time is entered in teh field, one is provided (12:00:00 AM).
My delema is that I have a dropdown list box that displays distinct dates from a table for selection to execute a query but now my listbox is twice as long due to the insertion of the timestamp.
Is there a way to get rid of the timestamp that I am not capturing for this field? I can't believe that SQL2000 doesn't have a way to handle just a date.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Need some quick help here.. The data I got from the text file use the "04/11/2007" date format and the StockDate in MS-SQL use the datetime datatype.
My understanding is that the "04/11/2007" will default to the 04/11/2007 12:00 am" format in MS-SQL.
So, when I use the sql query, how do search only for the date part of the data in MS-SQL and match it to the data from text file? I tried this SQL Query below.
--snip--
SELECT RawID FROM tblPurchaseRaw WHERE VIN = '" & sVin.ToString.Trim & "' AND StockDate = '" & dStockDate.ToString.Trim & "'
--snip--
That way, if I get a row then I know the data is there. If I don't get a row then I know the data is not there.
Bold: I get it now. It is all automatic as MS-SQL does it automatically...
I have a database which is centered around two date tables (approx. 5.5 million records each). We are finally making the big leap from SQL Server 2005 to 2012. The data is currently stored as datetime, and we are hoping to take advantage of the new date datatype, since the time component is not needed.
The first table has 13 different date columns. In testing on the 2012 server I have changed 3 columns so far, and have seen that changing the datatype to date is actually increasing the Index size and not affecting the data size. Only 3 of the columns are associated with indexes, and modifying a non-indexed column still increased the index size. I am running the Disk Usage by Table report to view the sizes.
I have a datetime user inputted parameter on a report. I want to display it on the report without the time part.
ie. it displays
4/8/2007 12:00:00 AM
I want just to display the date part
4/8/2007
Is this possible?
I have a field that I would like to only display the date as mm/dd/yyyy. Current field shows mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss AM.

i have the following situation. in my database i have a datetime field (dd/mm/yy hh:mms) and i also have a field timezone.
the timezone field has values in minutes that i should add to my datetime field so i have the actual time.
afterwards i split the datetime into date and time.
the last part i can accomplish (CONVERT (varchar, datetime, 103) as DATEVALUE and CONVERT (varchar, DATETIME, 108) as TIMEVALUE).
could anybody tell me how i can add the timezone value (in minutes) to my datetime value ?
i do all the calculations in my datasource (sql).
Thanks

I just uploaded my tables to sql server, and am using access to run the forms. In one listbox I have a few fields that I want to display only the time ex. (9:00pm) which works good in access, but in sql the listbox displays the date + the time (04/01/2004 + 9:00pm).
The datatype I am using is datetime length 8.
I also have a strange problem with modifying records. In access it takes one click on my "modify record" button I made to change a field in a record, but in sql it now requires two clicks. Anyone know what could cause this?
Any help is appreciated.
I have various reports which have in the header a textbox with a time/date expression.
e.g. =Format(Now, "HH:mm on dddd, d MMMM yyyy")
These reports have a daily snapshot taken so users can look up historic versions of reports. The problem is that if the PDF renderer is used the time displayed is the time now not the time the data was generated. (If I view the snapshot in the browser the correct historic time and date is shown though.)
This is at best confusing and at worst could lead to some bad business decisions being made.
Is there any way I can get it to display the actual time and date the snapshot was generated?
I have tried replacing "Now" with "Globals!ExecutionTime" with no effect.
I have also seen a suggestion to move the header textbox into the report body and then add a new textbox to the header pointing at the textbox in the body
e.g. with Expression =ReportItems("LabelToday").Value
But this does not work either and it is still displaying the time now when viewed in PDF format.
Is there any straight forward way of doing this?
If there is no straight forward way can I somehow access the HistoryID from within Report Code so I can look up the correct value myself in the ReportServer database?
Thanks In Advance,
Martin
I have a field that contains only a date, and a field that only contains times. If I try to add the two together, I get some meaningless date like year 2111.
The raw data looks like this
EVT_DT='2005-12-05 00:00:00'
EVT_TM='2005-12-06 13:59:00' //today's date
I wrote a function that gives me the minutes past midnight for the EVT_TM
and use a dateadd(n,myMinutesFuntion(EVT_TM),EVT_DT), but it kills the performance in the nexted cursor.
Thanks,
Carl
Hi All,
I have a SQl Statemnent .... AND dbStartDateTime >= 27/12/2003 19:00:00 .... and get the following error
Incorrect syntax near '19'
I dont understand why it wouldnt like this as this is how it is stored in the database?
I have looked for answers but most people seem to want ot use DateTime without the time
Thanks in advance

How do I extract the date and time individually from a single datetime value so that I get 2 values, the date and the time?
For instance:
10-19-2007 6:34:14 PM -->> 10/19/2007 (date val) and 6:34:14 PM (time val)
How can I calculate a DateTime column by merging values from a Date column and only the time part of a DateTime column?

Hi,We have a lame app that uses 2 datetime(8) fields, 1 stores the date, theother the time.example query:select aud_dt, aud_tmfrom ordersresults:aud_dt aud_tm2006-06-08 00:00:00.000 1900-01-01 12:32:26.287I'm trying to create a query that give me records from the current date inthe past hour.Here's a script that gives me todays date but I cannot figure out the time:select aud_dt, aud_tm, datediff(d,aud_dt,getdate()), datediff(mi, aud_tm,getdate())from orderswhere (datediff(d,aud_dt,getdate()) = 0)results:aud_dt aud_tmdatediff(0=today) timediff (since 1900-01-01)2006-06-08 00:00:00.000 1900-01-01 12:32:26.287 055978689I added this next part to the above query but it does not work since thedate/time is from 1900-01-01and (datediff(mi, aud_tm, getdate()) <= 60)Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I am importing a csv file to SQL 2005 table. The source column is coming as datetime. The destination filed is a datetime type. I would like to update the destination with the time part from the source. I used the data conversion to convert it to time using "database time[DT_DBTIME]". For a source value "2/08/2007 21:51:07" this inserts a value "2007-08-03 21:51:07.000". I need the column to have a value as "1900-01-01 21:57:07.000".
Can someone please tell me how do I do this conversion?
Thanks,
I am trying to display time difference between an Admission Date and a Discharge date as follows:
Admission Date:8/26/2015 6:59pm
Discharge Date:9/1/2015 6:49pm
Time Display 5D 23H
I used the following expression but came up with an error
Not sure what I am doing wrong or if this is the best expression to use
=(TimeSpan.FromMinutes(Avg(DateDiff(“n”,<Fields!Admission_Date.Value>,<Fields!Actual_Discharge_Date.Value>)))).Days
“d “ &
(TimeSpan.FromMinutes(Avg(DateDiff(“n”,<Fields!Admission_Date.Value>,<Fields!Actual_Discharge_Date.Value>)))).Hours
“h “ &
(TimeSpan.FromMinutes(Avg(DateDiff(“n”,<Fields!Admission_Date.Value>,<Fields!Actual_Discharge_Date.Value>)))).Minutes
& “m “ ))))
I have a standard datetime and I need to convert it to the client specification of:
YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssTZD
eg: 2009-04-16T19:20:30+08:00
I am not sure of the easiest way to do this.
The test code below gets me part of the way but I am unsure on how to get the offset on the end without hardcoding to much.
DECLARE @datetime DATETIME = '2014-12-20 12:30:00'
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(30),@datetime,127)
We have 2 columns:
StartDate - data type Date
StartTime - data type Time
I need to combine them into a DateTime data type. For now, I convert each of them into varchar, insert space in between, and convert to DateTime, like this:
convert(datetime, convert(varchar(10), EndDate , 101) + ' ' + CONVERT(varchar(20), EndTime,24))
Is there a better, more elegant way to do this?
How do I extract the ate and time from a datetime field. The field is called Log_DateTime. I want to extract the date and the time and then use these two expressions to sort/filter on in Query Analyzer.

Database is SQL Server 2000
I have a field in a table that stores date of birth. The field's datatype is char(6) and looks like this: 091703 (mmddyy). I want to convert this value to a datetime datatype.
What is the syntax to convert char(6) to datetime?
Thank you in advance.
Working on a new database where the Date and Time are stored in a Date Time Field.
Then working on an OLDER database file within the same SQL Database contains these 2 items as integers:
transDate = "71615" (July 16, 2015)
transTime = "12345" (01:23:45 AM)
How do we convert both of them into a single SQL DateTime field such as "2015-07-16 01:23:45.000" so that it can be used in a join restricting to a date time in a different SQL File that properly has the DateTime in it?
This works well for converting the transDate Part in the select statement:
dbo.IntegerToDate(at.transDate) as transDate
* That returns: "2015-07-16 00:00:00.000"
* The resulting data must work directly in a Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Query using either using the "on" statement or part of the "where" clause. In other words, NOT as a stored procedure!
Also must be able to be used as a date difference calculation when comparing the 2 files Within say + or - 5 seconds.
This is driving me nuts..
I'm trying to extract some data from a table in oracle. The oracle table stores date and time seperately in 2 different columns. I need to merge these two columns and import to sql server database.
I'm struggling with this for a quite a while and I'm not able to get it working.
I tried the oracle query something like this,
SELECT
(TO_CHAR(ASOFDATE,'YYYYMMDD')||' '||TO_CHAR(ASOFTIME,'HH24:MM : SS')||':000') AS ASOFDATE
FROM TBLA
this gives me an output of 20070511 23:06:30:000
the space in MM : SS is intentional here, since without that space it appread as smiley
I'm trying to map this to datetime field in sql server 2005. It keeps failing with this error
The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data
I'm struck with error for hours now. Any pointers would be helpful.
Thanks
Nothing difficult, I just need a way to generate a new datetime column based on the column [PostedDate], datetime. So basically I want to truncate the time. Thanks a lot.
