Debugging SQL CLR Hangs With SQL Server 2005 And VS 2005
Apr 2, 2007
Hello,
I am having a problem with SQL Server (Express) hanging during simple debugging of CLR code. I created a test project with a user defined function, and call this from the test script. The output log shows that the sqlservr.exe was auto-attached successfully, and then the everything hangs. I have to terminate debugging in order to regain control, and this takes perhaps a minute or two.
Any ideas?

I am unable to debug code from a SQL Database Project using the CLR. After VS 2005 does the auto-attaching to the SQL server, VS hangs until I tell it to stop debugging. Many others have reported this as a similar problem, however this only seems to affect me when I€™m connecting to specific servers. Specifically it seems to be remote connections. When I attempt to connect to my SQL 2005 Developer Edition €œlocally€? I get right through and can debug.
From my VS output window:
Auto-attach to process '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric' on machine 'gx620-eric' succeeded.
Debugging script from project script file.
testing
No rows affected.
(0 row(s) returned)
Finished running sp_executesql.
The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).
The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).
The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).
The thread 'gx620-eric [59]' (0x1730) has exited with code 0 (0x0).
The program '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric: gx620-eric' has exited with code 0 (0x0).
When I attempt to connect to a remote server running Enterprise Edition, it hangs after a successful attach.
Auto-attach to process '[1856] [SQL] virtual2003eric' on machine 'virtual2003eric' succeeded.
Sometimes after countless attempts, I am able to get this to work, but lately I have had no success. As far as the SQL Server side, enabling and disabling the CLR through the Surface Area Configuration seems to be the only place to do anything relative to the CLR inside SQL server.
I have firewalls disabled. All SQL Servers presently have both SQL 2005 SP2 and Visual Studio 2005 SP1 installed.
I€™ve tried restarting servers and services, checking and un-checking €œAllow SQL/CLR Debugging€? and those steps did not work for me.
Does anyone have any insight on this one? Any ideas on how I can further debug this one?
Thanks.
Eric

Hello,
we have a SQL server 2005 with Visual studio Prof. 2005 in the
employment.
The debuggers function only in Visual studio correctly, as long as no
code on the SQL server must be implemented.
If a BREAK POINT in a Stored Procedure is set, this is not activated,
since this cannot be bound.
Does someone know, what it lies and can like one it eliminate?
Thank you for your assistance in advance.
Yours sincerely

Just purchased a new server, and am trying to install SQL Server 2005 standard, 64 bit. I'm running Windows Server 2005 r2 64 bit.
Setup support files installs fine.
System configuration passes all 14 checks.
Then it moves to install and just hangs there. Eventually, perhaps maybe after 20-30 minutes does it create a message saying that the Install has failed to respond. Retry or cancel.

Hi
I got an access 2002 application front end with a sql server 2005 express back end. Some of my clients are having some difficulties. After using the application for a while, some of the users are finding that the system just hangs up. It usually happens after the front end application has been running for about an hour (sometimes sooner and sometimes later). There are perhaps 1 to 5 concurrent users and I have checked to see if there are any firewalls stalling it (I think I check all of them)- Is there any way that SQL Server 2005 express could be caused to just stall- This even occurs with the odd laptop. All the appropriate protocols are enabled as well. These databses are not very large.
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRETIATED!!!
Thanks

I am experiencing extremely slow behavior (no activity for > 30 mins) during a SS 2005 Dev Edition install on XP SP2 on various steps during the SQL Server Database Services step - e.g. during "Setting File Security". This is very annoying.
I've found many postings on this issue indicating that OS calls in this part of the install (e.g. LookupAccountName()) are network speed dependent.
Does Microsoft have any plans to rework this part of the install to rid the need of these calls? I really wish the install would be possible without these calls - it's driving me crazy monitoring this for hours. We've got to roll SS2005 out to a couple hundred developers eventually and this isn't going to cut it.
Thanks for your time on this matter.
Best Regards,
Mike

I just bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed and was able to install Visual Studio 2005 Pro, but when attempting to install SQL Server 2005 it just hangs at the IIS detection step. I was using the administrative account. I was able to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2000, but I need 2005.
Some posts mention IIS version issues and 32 vs 64 bit version issues. Can anyone ellaborate on what is happening and why? What is the work around?

After the installer has asked for authentication mode and has started verifying the authentication it simply hangs. I've let it sit there for an hour before taking the installer forcibly down but nothing seems to be happening except for two osql.exe processes showing up in the task manager.
I've tried both windows authentication and SQL server authentication but the outcome is always the same. At the same time I'm, however, able to login to the database engine and all services with management studio using both authentication modes.
The last few lines in HotFix.log are as follows:
05/09/2006 09:49:09.999 Authenticating user using Windows Authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.015 SQL Service MSSQLServer was previously running, ready for authentication
05/09/2006 09:49:10.218 SQL Agent Service SQLSERVERAGENT was previously running
05/09/2006 09:49:12.093 User authentication was successful
This would indicate that there's nothing wrong with the authentication but with whatever is supposed to take place after that.
There are quite a few lines in the log similar to the one below:
05/09/2006 09:47:08.438 Failed to read associated hotfix build information for the following file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBinnSQLServr.exe
Redist9_Hotfix_KB913090.log seems to be the only individual log file that ends with line saying "Hotfix package launched" whereas all other logs have several lines of checks being completed successfully.
Any ideas what might be causing the installer to hang and how to fix it?

I have two tables
t_DTM_DATA_STAGING around 2 million records
t_DTM_DATA around 251 million records
The below SQL statement looks for records in the t_DTM_DATA_STAGING table that are not in the t_DTM_DATA table and adds them to a 3rd table. (t_DTM_DATA_STAGING2)
This statement has been running fine for weeks, but now it seems to get hung every day. I ran sp_Who2 and it says the status is runnable. I let it run for around 5 or 6 hours the other day to see if it will finish but it didn't. This SQL job is step 3 in a 6 step SQLAgent job that usually finishes in 30 to 45 minutes.
I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. No other jobs are running at the time this job runs.
Could this SQL statement be written a better way?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I have a DTS package that I brought over from SQL server 2000 in to SQL Server 2005. I have installed all of the legacy components to run the DTS packages but I need to debug an ActiveX script task. In SQL Server 2000 I could turn on Just-In-Time debugging and use the stop operator (in my vbscript) to break the running script and launch the debugger.
I don't see how to do this in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. Is it possible to debug a script object in a DTS package running in SQL Server 2005?

HELP!
For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.
For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.
After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.
Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?
Thanks for any help in advance,
Marc Mueller

I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:
OWC11
SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files
SQL Server Database Services
Reporting Services
Visual Studio Integrated Development
SQL Server Books Online
SQLXML4
Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.
The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.
I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.

Hello, I am pretty new with SQL Server 2005.
I have installed SQL Server Express Edition. I have migrated a set of tables from Oracl10g (by using Microsoft's Migration Tool Kit). While I am trying the following simple update command, the session hangs and it never finishes !!!!!!!!!!!!
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
select pos_key from pos_station where staff_key = 1105
POS_KEY
=======
NULL
update pos_station set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The table has a few constraints and a couple of indices in place.
Then I create another table (but no contraints or indices), just copy the data from the problematic one and the update WORKS (in msecs) :
update pos_station_new set pos_key = 1 where staff_key = 1105
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Is there any way to tell if the table (any table in SQL Server) is corrupted or not ?
How can I tell if a session is waiting for something and what is that something ?
Thank you very much for your help.
Tom

Ok, I am aware of the process to debug a stored proc for SQL 2005. I have never done anything in the Visual Studios 2005 so have had no reason to have it but now that I am pretty much forced into using SQL 2005, I have been deprived of the easy system of debugging stored procs from query analyzer. My question is...with the Visual Studios 2005 that was included with the SQL 2005 install, why does it not allow me to debug? I am aware of the whole Pro, Standard, etc of VS, but why not offer any way to debug? Am I missing something here? What options do I have to debug a stored proc other than running it over and over and over and over again to pinpoint an issue without getting VS2005 Pro or something?

We have recently migrated from an HP server to a new one, HP DL-380, 6 Disks ( 2 o.s. Mirror 1 + 3 database Mirror 5 + 1 Hot spare ), we instaled Windows 2003 Server, SQL-SERVER 2005 SP2 ( the old one had SQL-SERVER 2000 ) and we are runing and ERP systems that runs with Sql-Server.
We instaled the server and the soft and run it in production about a month ago, since almost the first day, the server hangs up when we run some random parts of the ERP program.
We request hp to change the mother, check the memories, the procesor, etc they told as that this isn't a hardware issue.
After further research we found that the only clue in this problem, the only big diffrence between the old server and the new one, ( among the Sql-Server version ) is that the Collation sequence is differnt, the server has ModernSpanish, the database is using SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, the same that has almost all other clients instalations.
We are not sure if the source of the prolbem is this, but we are runing out of ideas here. We change the Sql-Server user name that runs the process, created a new one. Again the same result.
Can anybody help with this ?

I am trying to install SQL 2005 SP1 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 platform. I have repeatedly tried this, and have trashed and re-built the platform all to no avail. I keep getting the same problem. The installation hangs, using 0 CPU apparently after successfully extracting the files to disk. It leaves the HOTFIX.EXE running, and cancelling it ends the process. The HOTFIX.LOG looks like this:

To the Moderator:
I am not sure if this thread needs to go into this forum or there is one for C# stored procedures/CLR Database Objects.
To All:
Is this a known issue that when debugging CLR stored procedures the VS 2005 freezes even before reaching into the stored procedure? I can restart my computer and debugging works for a while and then it starts to take forever when I step into (F10) during debugging. I am running only one instance of sql server, and even that of my local machine as I have never been able to debug on a remote server.
This random and unstable behavior of the debugger is proving very unproductive and costly. Is there a microsoft update/fix/patch to make debugging CLR stored procedures a smooth process?
Thanks.

Hello,
I wanted to instal sql server 2005 on our sql 2000 failover cluster.
The first thing i did was deinstal sql 2000.
The installation hangs on the dialog screen configuring components and does not present een error.
If i install the cluster with one node there's no problem.
But if i want to add the second node the installion hangs.
When i go to the second node and stop the scheduled task the installations stops.
Do you have any suggestion

I have a rather complex sp that runs for 4 minutes in SQL2000. It computes some messy oil and gas revenue/cost transactions. It involves lots of calls to functions that return single values of all types and also returns recordsets. There are all kinds of joins with temp and memory tables, etc. Just a mess, but it works. However, in SQL2005, it runs and apparently hangs, as it never ends.
I have run the Upgrade Advisor and otherwise, have not found any information that tells me that there are issues with functions or SQL-specific functions, tables, etc. that might cause this. Does anyone on this forum have some pointers on where I might look for assistance on this matter? Surely someone knows something about things working differently in 2005.
Thanks,
Jim

Background - I have a publication that propigates schema changes. I have a view in which I want to remove a column.
Error - Going by what the BOL says, I use Alter View and delete the column from my select statement. I issue the alter view command against the Publication database and it just "churns". I do not get any locking errors or any other type of error, but the statement never completes execution. I watched it run for 10 minutes and cancelled the query. Executing the same statement against a copy of the database that is not being published executes in 1, 2 seconds.
Here is what I am doing:
Old View: Select table1.record_number, table1.record_date, table1.status_code, table2.status_desc,
table2.txt_sort_order
FROM table1 join table2 on table1.status_code = table2.status_code
The query I am executing:
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER VIEW myview
AS
Select table1.record_number, table1.record_date, table1.status_code, table2.status_desc
FROM table1 join table2 on table1.status_code = table2.status_code

*every processing* of a cube with 7 dimensions 5 measure groups (no table has more than 100.000 rows) hangs while trying to process the measure groups. I have to restart the Analysis Service all the time. But even worse every 2nd processing crashes the whole Analysis Services Process.
The only time I could sucessfully deploy a cube was with 1 measure group only.
How can anyone do any serious work with Analysis Services?
The error messages from evenlog are not helpful either.
Thanks,
Tobias

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

We have been using Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition 3.1 RDA synchronization method successfully on Sql Server 2000 database. Recently we moved the database to Sql Server 2005, sync doesn't work anymore, it just hangs on one table. On further investigation, we found out that it's the index on that table that causes this. We removed the index, it works fine. We are wondering the root cause, removing the index is not a solution for us. Any thoughts?. Thanks.

Basically I've been using Visual Studio 2005 for a few weeks now moving a Pocket PC project from 2003 to 2005. When I hit the Start Debugging Button every time until today the project would rebuild and deploy to my pocket PC allowing me to debug etc but now I get
The remote connection to the device has been lost.
Please verify the device conection and restart debugging.
I used to get this problem in VS2003 sometimes and just like the numerous posts on different sites that I've looked at the problem eventually goes away and I'm none the wiser. One guy said that he found that if he went to bed the problem was resolved when he came back!
My PDA running Windows 2003 2nd Edition is directly connected to my PC via a USB port. I've rebooted my PC and done a soft reset on the PDA but it didn't help. I'm using ActiveSync 4.1.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
