Default Auto Close To No For Entire Server?
Nov 27, 2006
I was having this problem:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...78?dmode=source
with it taking an inordinate amount of time to enumerate the databases
on my local SQL Server instance, so I went through all the local
databases and unchecked "Auto Close" on the "Options" tab of the
Database properties in Enterprise Manager.
This cleared up the problem nicely. In EM or through SQL-DMO, the
databases on the local server enumerate quite quickly now. However, any
new databases that are created have "Auto Close" checked, so eventually
the original problem will resurface.
Is there some way to tell SQL Server to create any new databases with
"Auto Close" set to No?

Hi,
My report has default values for all parameters (ofcourse. which can be modified by user). When I try to view the preview, the report is running with the default values automatically. I want the report to run only when we click "View Report".

How do you close the connection at the SQL Server? I have a backup I want to resotre to SQLExpress using SQL Management Studio Express. When I try, the SQL tells me he can't because the database is in use. I don't realy care about this I still want to restore the database. So I figured it's because there are some active connection to the database. My gues is I have to close those, but how? I also know I can restart SQLExpress and the connection will drop, but this server has more then one database, so I cant always do that. I'm looking for some T-SQL like DROP ALL CONNECTION.
Thanks for the help.

Hi All,
Could anybody tell me how to make a copy of an entire database on the same server? The copy wizard won't allow the a copy to be made on the same server.
And I believe I won't be able to detach the database and re-attach it to a newly created database with a different name.
Thanks in advance!

My SQL server disk space is getting close to full capacity which is causing certain reports that we run via the SQL server to time out because I don't think there is enough space on the server.
Any tips on cleaning out a SQL server? Are there any folders that can absolutely be deleted to clear space? I know on a local computer that the %temp% folder can be cleaned out. I know when dealing with servers you do not want to make to many changes because it can cause major problems down the road.

I have tried searching all over and have not been able to find what I need, but this is what I have pieced together.
Background:
I need to move an entire instance of SQL Server 2000 SP3 running on Windows Server 2000 to a new physical server running SQL Server 2000 SP4 running on Windows Server 2003. I guess my biggest question is how do I move system databases (master,msdb,tempdb,model), I don't particularly like the idea of using sp_detach/sp_attach on system databases?
This is what I had in mind.
-Install SP4 on the source server
-Backup source to tape
-Restore from tape to destination server (restore system dbs as re_master,re_msdb)
-Shut SQL services down on destination server.
-Replace the system dbs .mdf and .ldf with the re_master & re_msdb .mdf and .ldf
-Restart SQL services
-Restore User databases from tape.
Ultimately, I'm asking can you change the undlying .mdf & .ldf files for system databases?
Also, are there any issues going from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2003?
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone here been having issues where SQL Server Management Server will sometimes ignore selected text and run all scripts on the current tab?
This has been happening most recently after a connection times out or is forced shut. From a disconnected tab, if I add "Use Master" at the bottom of a page full of script, it will often run ALL statements starting from the first line.
I have SP2 installed which rolls management server to 9.00.2047.00 - but this has been an issue for me even before SP1 & SP2.
I can find nothing in the knowledge base regarding this, but perhaps my search string wasn't very thorough.
I'd just like to know if others are experience this issue so I can report to MS.
Thanks.

1) I can't get the 'copy database' function to work from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2005. I connect ok. Everything goes to the last step and then it fails.2) I cant get a SQL server 2008 backup to restore on SQL SEerver 2005 either.
The only way I know that works is to script the creation of all tables then export and import. This does work.
How can I get the 'entire' database, structure and data, from 2008 to 2005?
ThanksSQL newbie.

I am unable to debug the first Script Task (not Script Component) since adding a second Script Task in one of my packages. The script completes successfully and goes green but the above error is displayed followed by another which is not mentioned here as I'm sure it's because of the first error. The second script task debugs fine so I know this is not the problem. But if I delete the second Script Task the first task starts debugging.
I have moved the breakpoint around in the first script and the only line that seems to work is the first line within the main method. It's irrelevant what this first line of code does. I know there is nothing wrong with the script tasks themselves as I have an exact copy in another package that debugs just fine.

This problem may appear trivial to you guys but is troubling me since quite some time now! The problem is that I created a website using express studio happily and it worked flawlessly on the local host. Now I want to move it to a remote server and my host created a database name ASPNETDB for me on the server. The problem is that that ASPNETDB database is virtually empty and I want to copy all my tables,stored procedures etc etc(complete database) to the remote ASPNETDB database. How can I do that? In the management studio express edition there is no command available to copy paste all contents of the database to another database. Please help I am quite confused!

we have roughly 22 people connected to one database. But after a while, their applications begin to drag due to in and out communication with the server. When i check the active connections on the sql server, some times i see 157 active connections, please how to i set a timeout or connection interval close, so as reduce the heavy load being put on the server. Or how can i automatically close connections when they get higher than 50 connections.
This settings should be sql server 2008 related.

At my current employer we are struggling with the best way to manage security and deployment of a project that contains databases, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS components, using configurations.
Environment (Dev):
3 SQL Server databases, all using mixed-mode security, using SQL Server security credentials.
12 SSIS packages; one master package, eleven child packages, 3 shared data sources
1 SSAS database; one cube, 15 dimensions, three referenced data sources from the SSIS project (in same solution)
6 SSRS reports, one data source to cube (not shared- doesn't appear SSRS can share datasources among other projects in the solution? Why?)
Everything runs fine in development. Now comes the tricky part.
Deploying SSIS and SSAS into production environments:
-Packages use XML config files for connection strings to three relational data sources.
-Deploy to SQL Server storage. Deploy wizard copies package dependencies (including XML config files) to default location set in INI file. When I do this, no config file shows up in remote server (remote server not set up identical to local, so directory does not exist. Need UNC path?) So, being a developer with no "special" permissions on the PROD server, what security permissions is allowing the deployment wizard from copying files to this location on a production server?
-Using a deploy script using dtutil doesn't copy the SSIS dependencies. Is this matter of using COPY or XCOPY to copy the configuration files to the dependency location? Again, in real-world practice, do developers typically change this location in the INI file to another location, or stick with the default. In either case, how does security work that allows files to get copied to the remote folder? (i.e. manual, or SQL Server manages this file folder permission through some other magic)
When using SSMS and running the package after being deployed on the remote server, if the config path is the default (e.g. C:program filesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSPackages...) it appears to be read from the local machines directory rather than the remote machines directory path (do I need to use UNC paths? The wizard doesn't give this option it seems)
-When scheduling the job from SQL Agent, does the proxy account need permissions to the folder the config files sit in?
-What about the roles security on the packages themselves? Where does the server roles come into play (dtsltuser, dtsadmin)
-Because the SSAS project uses connection references to the SSIS project in BIDS, and SSIS project uses configurations, will SSAS pick up on these connections?
-What about impersonation levels for SSAS? Leave all data sources set to default, and set the database impersonation level to "UseServiceAccount"? What if the developer is not the same as the OLAP administrator on the production server? In this case, Use Service Account isn't an option, and neither is the current users credentials.
-SSAS database also has security for Full Control, but still doesn't prevent security at the data source level within the database (talking about impersonation level, not source db credentials)
-How can SSRS connections leverage other shared connections?
As you can see, there are a ton of security considerations, none of which are intuitive and can be configured multiple ways and actually work (and a ton of ways that won't work).
I need a simple cheat-sheet about each step to take to configure this so multiple developers can work without interruption, hot-deploying SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS changes into different environments (QA, PROD).

Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
%userprofile%AppDataLocalTemp

I am trying to select rows from a SQL2000 database table and then write a random number back into each row. I have already looked into do it all in a SP but there are well documented limitations for the SQL RAND function when called in the same batch, so I need to somehow do in .Net what I already have working in classic ASP.
I can't get the UPDATE (part two section) to compile. I don't know how to call the stored procedure inside the 'foreach' loop or extract the SP parameters. I have it working in classic asp but am having a lot of trouble converting to .Net 2.0. Is the below even close to working?
// stored procedure to write externally generated random number value into database
PROCEDURE RandomizeLinks@L_ID int,@L_Rank intASUPDATE Links SET L_Rank = @L_RankWHERE (L_ID = @L_ID)
// Part One select links that need random number inserted.
public DataTable GetRandLinks() { SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString1A"].ConnectionString); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("RandomizerSelect001", con); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter(); da.SelectCommand = cmd; DataSet ds = new DataSet(); try { da.Fill(ds, "Random001"); return ds.Tables["Random001"]; } catch { throw new ApplicationException("Data error"); } }
// Part Two I need two write a random number back into each row
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { GetRandLinks(); int LinkID; // this generates unassigned local variable "LinkID' error int LRank; // this generates unassigned local variable "LRank' error SqlConnection con2 = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString1A"].ConnectionString); SqlCommand cmd2 = new SqlCommand("RandomizeLinks", con2); cmd2.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; cmd2.Parameters.AddWithValue("@L_ID", LinkID); cmd2.Parameters.AddWithValue("@L_Rank", LRank); SqlDataAdapter da2 = new SqlDataAdapter();
int RowIncrement; RowIncrement = 0; DataTable dt = GetRandLinks(); foreach (DataRow row in dt.Rows) { System.Random myRandom = new System.Random(); int LinkRank = myRandom.Next(25, 250); LRank = LinkRank; da2.UpdateCommand = cmd2; RowIncrement++; } }

Hello all,
I have a DB on my WM2005 device.
I'm using a program which connect to the DB using a CN.
On the constructor of the DB Class I use the line
static string connString = "Data Source='" + strDB + "'; LCID=1033; Password=" + strPass + "; Encrypt = FALSE;";
SqlCeConnection cn = new SqlCeConnection(connString);
Then I Open the Connection.
Now, in some ways I need to drop a Table.
Before I do so, I disconnect the DB but I'm using only the line
cn.Close();
I saw om the Watch attributes that its not a real disconnect to the DB.
When I try to Drop the Table I get this message:
The system timed out waiting for a lock. [ Session id = 25,Thread id = -2096711882,Process id = -2090594918,Table name = Movies,Conflict type = x lock (s blocks),Resource = DDL ]
And the Table doesn't drop.
Is it related to the constructor line I made?
What is the best solution to Drop a table..and then to get connected again with the DB.
Thanks in advance..

Howdy;
I've tried this in the 'tools' area, but that didn't work too well. I suspect, I will have to generate a T-SQL code then schedule it as a job. Why I can't just drag and drop with basic desires, is beyond me, but THAT probably does exist.
anyway here is the problem
[this server has many databases, on SQL 2000 sp2]
1. User only wants me to use Monday morning's full backup, which is good in that it doesn't include transaction logs.
2. Restore that data overtop/into Developement db. = good, no data to worry about damaging.
3. User does NOT want me to do this by hand, but schedule it.
ok,
a. must do a RESTORE WITH FILELISTONLY from [?] what ?, master? and if I user the *.bak of the production, it has
a coded date field in the name entry SO, I would, I guess, have to generate all sorts of wonderful code to find the date and build a file name. Why, because using the FROM DISK = 'F:MSSQLBACKUPDBPRODUCTION_yyyyddmm.BAK' is not going to work with a wild card.
Can I do a file lookup using a 'PRODUCTION' prefix into a variable, then use that or should I look for latest file date [remember there are several database backups here], or ????
then. How does one schedule such a T-SQL. Do I save it to some text file, and invoke it using a job scheduler.
any help appreciated.
IS there an easier way.

In our application we use the ADODB.Recordset.
In SQL server 2000
If there was a view that joined 2 tables and I accessed the view the 2 ID fields in the view would still have the AutoIncrement attribute still set to true so that I knew those were Identity fields.
In SQL server 2005
I dont' know why but if you reference a View that has Identiy AutoInc fields in ADO it doesn't keep those properties.
Also for whatever reason we Set the ID field to 0 to let ourselves know its a new Record. SQL 2000 let it happen and assumed it to be null where as By Setting the ID to 0 in SQL 2005 causes it to blow up on me.
Is there some sort of setting in SQL that can make SQL 2005 work like SQL 2000 in these two instances...
