Is it possible to define a Default value of a column as a select statement (or stored procedure that executes that select)?
My select should look sth like this in order to replace 'AB1236':
select 'AB' + cast((max(substring(col1, 3, 4)) + 1) as varchar(6)) from t_table1

Ok I have a script to generate a database, and newly added to the database is a date fild for a specfic table. I have the 'Default value or binding' set to (getdate()) how exactly would you add that to the script for then the table is initialy generated. I have a stored procedure with a SELECT statement, that retrieves 1 row.

I want all the NULL values in that row to be change in some default values.

I'm trying to set an int type attribute to 0 for its Default Value, but it keeps reverting to ((0)). What is causing this?
Every int type attribute on that table does the same. There is one bit type attribute and a bunch of other type of attributes, but non of them are giving me a problem. The table is a copy from another database and I did check all the constraints and properties to make sure they're the same.

I just moved from Access to SQL 2005 Express. I have a table with contains a Column contactDate datetime. Under the properties tab ( in SQL Manager ), I see a field "Default Value or Binding".
I would like to have a default date/time entered into this field when a new record is created. In Access I used the Now() to get this done. Any sites that list some of the values that can be entered into this field?

I have scenario where i have to pick one particular value from where condition. Here is the example:A store can have different types i-e A or B , A and B or either A or B.
Store Type Sales

23 A 1980
23 B 50
5 B 560
I want to filter the store in "where clause" where
1)- if the store has type A and B, then assign only A
2)- if the store has type A associated with it then assign A
3)- if the store has type B associated with it, then assign B.
Select Store, sum(sales), Type
from table1
where (TYPE]= (case when [TYPE] in ('A','B') then 'A'
when [TYPE]='A' then 'A' else 'B'end))
GROUP BY [store], [TYPE]
The above statement is not working for when store has only Type B associated with it.

I have a stored procedure that sets the default which works fine: ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[addMyConst]ASBEGINALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1]ADD DEFAULT 70 FOR [Auto_ourlim]END(I still need to put parameters in so that I can run the stored procedure from a form, but for now....)
To change it I know that I have to drop the constraint first like this:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[dropmyValue]ASALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1] DROP CONSTRAINT [Auto_ourlim]
The problem is that when I execute the procedure I get the error that "Auto_ourlim" is not a constraint so it does not drop the Default Value. When I go over to SQL Server Management Studio Express I can see why:
If I open up the table and open up the Constraints the constraint is "DF__tbl1__Auto_ourli__5FB337D6". I could change the DROP CONSTRAINT to this, and that works, but it changes every time I add the new DEFAULT VALUE. I don't know how to get around it. Is there a way to put wildcards around "Auto_our" in DROP CONSTRAINT [Auto_ourlim}? Any suggestions would be welcome...even if there's a totally different way to do it.
What I'm trying to ultimately accomplish is this: Column1 (AutoLimits) would be user insert to the database and then in the database it would MINUS Column2 (Auto_ourlim - set with the default value) = Column3 (Difference - a computed field in the database)

See the purple ftm_parent.ForumtopicMessageID. If I hard-code that to a 2, this works. With the fieldname there, SQL Server Management Studio says:
Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Procedure udForumTopicMessageByForumTopicID, Line 9
The multi-part identifier "ftm_parent.ForumTopicMessageID" could not be bound.
If any experts out there can help me out with this, I'm sure it wouldn't take much to fix.

I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly. My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys. So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys. I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit. I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it. I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates. When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template. This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value. So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors. I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode. I make my changes and then select "update." When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing. The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work. When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again. I am attempting to run update statements within a SELECT CASE statement.

I get incorrect syntax near the keyword 'update'.
Is there a way to set a field value to the column default in an update statement?
Eg.
UPDATE Table2 SET field1 = DefaultValue
where DefaultValue is the field1 column default in the table definition.
The reason I need to do this is when I delete a record from Table1, I need to set the foreign key in Table2 to the default (I don't want to delete the record in Table2, just want to set the key to a default key). I could hard-code the default value in the stored procedure but I think that's just not clean. If I create a new instance of the DB and the default value changes, I'd need to change the stored procedure(s). Just not clean...
To avoid a drawn-out discussion, there are reasons why I can't setup a relationship between the two tables and use "ON DELETE SET DEFAULT".
Any info greatly appreciated.

In the preview mode the "All salespersons" is selected. When I deploy I see in the web user interface "<Select a Value>". The second choice is "All salespersons".

I have the following problem:
In my report I have -among others- a multi-value parameter, populated by a query (so I cannot a priori know the content of the list).
I would like my report to start without any user choice, through default parameters, so what I need is the "select all" choice selected by default. How can I achieve this?
[The only default value I am able to pass to the multi-value parameter is one of the elements populating the list, statically writing it in the "Non-queried" section of "Default values": "From query" option seems not to work for multi-valued]
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
