Default Trace File - Sort Warnings

Mar 13, 2015

I was just going through the default trace files and see full of sort warnings, missing join predicates and hash warnings. The server behaved weirdly last night with queries longer than usual time and the server started choking. I didn't find any info from error logs or event viewer.

DB Engine :: Change Default Trace Value

Sep 3, 2014

I am trying to change the default trace value from 2 to 6, to incorporate rollover and server shutdown. I am using this code to create a new trace (with id: 2) with the value of 6 and use that to overwrite the default trace (with id: 1):

    DECLARE @new_trace_id INT;
    EXECUTE master.dbo.sp_trace_create
      @someinteger = @new_trace_id OUTPUT,
      @someinteger = 6,
      @someinteger = N'C: raceTestTrace';

Then I disable the default trace. I am then using this code to overwrite the default trace (with id: 1) and replace with new value default trace (with id: 2):

       -- get trace status
       SELECT * FROM ::fn_trace_getinfo(NULL)
       -- stop trace
       EXEC sp_trace_setstatus @traceid = 1
                    , @status = 0
       go
        -- delete trace
       EXEC sp_trace_setstatus @traceid = 1
                    , @status = 2

Then I enable the default trace. It works perfectly (default trace with id 1 is showing value 6) until I restart. Upon restart no default traces are enabled, once I run the script to enable the default trace then the values for the default trace (with id: 1) are back, and my value for rollover/server restart is back to 2.

Import From Flat File Warnings And Errors

Feb 7, 2008

Hi,
I am trying to import from Excel file. So In between Excel file source and OLEDB destination I am using One Data Transformations to convert excel unicode characters to Sqlserver varchar.

Iam getting this following errors:
1)

Error: 0xC020901C at Data Flow Task, OLE DB Destination [382]: There was an error with input column "Copy of Zip" (615) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (395). The column status returned was: "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

Copy of zip is the Data Transformation column mapped Sqlserver Varcahr(200) column of Zipcode.
In excel file the Zip codes are like this:
78712-2344
78123
12345
87651-1234

2)

The column "State" needs to be updated in the external metadata column collection.
This is warning. This type of warnings are for all columns in excel file.

3) Intially I declared the Sqlserver table columns like this Varchar(100), then SSIS showing some warning like truncation of column State 255 characters to .. So I changed columns datatype from Varchar(100) to Varchar(500)? Why we need to change like this.

Thanks in advance

SQL Server 2008 :: What Could Cause Large Gaps In Servers Default Trace

Feb 12, 2015

I have the default trace on a SQL Server 2008R2 instance enabled and found today that there is a gap of nearly 4 minutes in the trace during a time of the day when there most certainly is not going to be a 4 minute window of nothing.

What if anything could cause the default trace to have a gap like this? The SQL Server Instance (against my preferences) is hosted on VMware however it has its on HOST and so its resources are not being shared with any other server. The data & log files reside on different parts of the SANS. Our IT & Network admins are looking into the issue on their end but when I looked and found a near 4 minute gap in the default trace it hit me that this could be something above/outside of SQL Server.

How To Know What Is The Default Sort Order Of A Database

The server is sql server 2000, it has a database with collation SQL_Latin_General_CP1_CI_AS. How to know what is the default sort order of it? By the way, is it possible to use a query using query analyser to find the sort order of the db? Thanks in advance.

Default Sort Order Of The Data When Inserting From One Table To Another

May 19, 2008

I have a data load process that reads data from flat file into a Stage table in sql server. The order of the records in the stage table is exactly same as the order in the flat file. The identity column on the Stage table (which is also the clustered index) represents the exact line/row number of the data in the filat file. I perform some transformations on the data in the stage table and then insert it into a cumulative table which has a clustered index on an identity column again. When I do this, does the order of the data in the cumulative table be in the same order as the data in the stage table? Anyone, please let me know if I can rely on SQL server to maintain the same order or I will be forcing a sort order on the Identity column (clustered index) of the stage table when I insert the data into a cumulative table.

Thanks in advance!!

SQL Server 2008 :: Server Is Not Responding - Default Trace

May 30, 2015

We are using sql server 2008r2 standard edition.

We have replication set up. Publisher and distributor are on the same server, subscriber is in different server.

Suddenly the replication started failing and continued more than 12 hrs. When I tried to connect to the subscriber server, I am able to connect to the server but not able to run any queries or not able to open the error log from SSMS.

Is there any way to find from the default trace why the replication failed and the server is not responded?

What columns do I need to query from the trace?

Setting Up Continuous Trace File

Jan 29, 2002

Does anyone know exactly how to create a trace that runs continuously on a server and writes the data to a table? Now I know how to create a trace file with the profiler, but I want something set up so that I don't have to have the profiler running on the server all the time. As well as soemthing that will restart itself if the server is rebooted. I have been looking at these x(xp_trace.*) procedures. Is this the way to do it?

I have to trap login information in a table and have a scheduled job that runs once a month and look for specific data in the table and send out e-mails based on certain values.

I have written the procedure which does this I just need to know how to set up the trace so it runs in the background continuously.

Can anyone help?

Thanks............

Is there any select statement that will be useful in finding the @traceid for these auditting sessions? Also, how am I able to stop the sessions without stopping the related services?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Alla

SQL 2012 :: Trace File Sizes

Jul 30, 2014

I am in the middle of capturing a workload to try and tune a SQL instance and was wondering what kinds of sizes people capture in terms of traces. I am only 1 day into a capture and I believe a typical workload would be a week long capture and I am already at 10GB of files. I am only capturing rpc_completed and sql_batch_completed.

What sizes of workloads do other people capture and then where do you analyse them, do you have particular dedicated server for this kind of thing as at present I am looking to use my local PC. Also what rollover file sizes do people tend to use, I am currently using 1GB.

Default Sort Order - Open Table - Select Without Order By

Mar 27, 2008

Hi!

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.

The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"

So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?

I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.

Peace.

Creating A Trace File With The Date Appended To It's Name

Jul 23, 2005

I'm trying to create a trace file with the file as part of it's name. For example, I'd like to create a file called FailedLogins-20050428. Sofar I haven't been able to figure out how to get the name of the fileand the date together (I'm sill very new to SQL Server and tracing). What I've done is:declare @rc intdeclare @traceid intdeclare @maxfilesize bigintset @maxfilesize = 50exec @rc=sp_trace_create @traceid=@traceid output, @options=0,@tracefile=N'C: racefailedlogins', @maxfilesize=@maxfilesize,@stoptime=NULLif @rc > 0 print 'sp_trace_code failed with error code ' +rtrim(cast(@rc as char))else print 'traceid for the trace is ' + rtrim(cast(@traceid as char))I can create a trace file on C drive without difficulty. I've triedcreating a file like this:exec @rc=sp_trace_create @traceid=@traceid output, @options=0,@tracefile=N'C: racefailedlogins + convert (varchar,getdate(),112',@maxfilesize=@maxfilesize, @stoptime=NULLBut what I end up created is a file on C calledfailedlogins + convert(varchar,getdate(),112).trcI have no doubt what I want to do can be done. I just done know how todo it.If anyone could tell me where I'm going wrong, I'd really appreciateit. Thanks in advance.

SQL Tools :: Cannot Save Server Profiler Trace File

Dec 9, 2011

This is for SQL Server 2005 SP4 Build 5266. We have been having performance issues in production. There are tight deadlines to be met and it is important that they are solved promptly.

Yesterday we replicated the situation in the acceptance testing environment. The jobs take 8 hours to run and we started at 2:00 PM.

Just before the jobs ran I set up an SQL Server Profiler trace to catch processes with a duration of longer then 12 seconds. I set it to save the results to a database table.

Last night I checked the table at 5:00 PM and there were entries in the table. However, I could be mistaken.

At 9:00 PM I checked the table and it was empty.

This morning I arrived at work and checked SQL Server Profiler. The trace was running and within SQL Server Profiler, there are 100s of results. I stopped the trace. However, checking the table, it is empty.

I thought I would be able to save the trace results to a file. When I chose "Save As" from the file menu, all the options are greyed out (trace file, trace template, trace table, etc).

The results are there but there is no way of saving them and no way of exporting them. How could this have happened?

Is there a location, where SQL Server Profiler saves the results in a temporary space. I may be able to open them and retrieve them. How can I save the results? Why are all my options greyed out?

Default Sort Order When Order By Column Value Are All The Same

Apr 14, 2008

Hi,
We got a problem.
supposing we have a table like this:

CREATE TABLE a (
aId int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
aName string2 NOT NULL
)
go
ALTER TABLE a ADD
CONSTRAINT PK_a PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (aId)
go

insert into a values ('bank of abcde');
insert into a values ('bank of abcde');
...
... (20 times)

select top 5 * from a order by aName
Result is:
6Bank of abcde
5Bank of abcde
4Bank of abcde
3Bank of abcde
2Bank of abcde

select top 10 * from a order by aName
Result is:
11Bank of abcde
10Bank of abcde
9Bank of abcde
8Bank of abcde
7Bank of abcde
6Bank of abcde
5Bank of abcde
4Bank of abcde
3Bank of abcde
2Bank of abcde

According to this result, user see the first 5 records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 in page 1, but when he tries to view page 2, he still see the records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. This is not correct for users.

Of course we can add order by aid also, but there are tons of sqls like this, we can't update our application in one shot.

So I ask for your advice here, is there any settings can tell the db use default sort order when the order by column value are the same? Or is there any other solution to resolve this problem in one shot?

SQL 2012 :: Delete Particular Trace File And At Same Time Keeping Directory Dynamic

I am struggling figuring out the token from a CMDEXEC job (as opposed to TSQL Job). It is not an option to execute the command by enabling the executing CMDs via TSQL, which is why I am using the agent. I have seen the Microsoft Site on tokens but all examples seem to be oriented to TSQL Job Type.

I am trying to delete a particular trace file and at same time keeping the SQL Directory dynamic.Taking it a step further is adding in "deleting if file exist".

del $(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(SQLDIR)) + "LogTestTrace.trc"

Cant Sort Data In Exported Excel File From Sql Ser

Feb 7, 2008

Hello,
I am new to this sql server reporting server technology. I have a requirement like the table header should repeat in all pages of the exported excel's print preview. So I have created the header columns with fixed lenths as same as table's header in the page header of the report. Then only the Header will repeat in all pages of the print preview.

But the problem is when doing like this, many of the columns have been merged together. The report layout is ok. But cant sort the data. It says a message "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."

In some forms i have found the header control's edges need to be sized identically with the tables' columns edges. I did it. But still the columns are merged when exporting.

Please help me out from this.

Thanks in advance.

Dynamic Sort Column And Sort Order Not Working

Aug 7, 2007

I am trying to set sorting up on a DataGrid in ASP.NET 2.0. I have it working so that when you click on the column header, it sorts by that column, what I would like to do is set it up so that when you click the column header again it sorts on that field again, but in the opposite direction. I have it working using the following code in the stored procedure: CASE WHEN @SortColumn = 'Field1' AND @SortOrder = 'DESC' THEN Convert(sql_variant, FileName) end DESC,
case when @SortColumn = 'Field1' AND @SortOrder = 'ASC' then Convert(sql_variant, FileName) end ASC,
case WHEN @SortColumn = 'Field2' and @SortOrder = 'DESC' THEN CONVERT(sql_variant, Convert(varchar(8000), FileDesc)) end DESC,
case when @SortColumn = 'Field2' and @SortOrder = 'ASC' then convert(sql_variant, convert(varchar(8000), FileDesc)) end ASC,
case when @SortColumn = 'VersionNotes' and @SortOrder = 'DESC' then convert(sql_variant, convert(varchar(8000), VersionNotes)) end DESC,
case when @SortColumn = 'VersionNotes' and @SortOrder = 'ASC' then convert(sql_variant, convert(varchar(8000), VersionNotes)) end ASC,
case WHEN @SortColumn = 'FileDataID' and @SortOrder = 'DESC' THEN CONVERT(sql_variant, FileDataID) end DESC,
case WHEN @SortColumn = 'FileDataID' and @SortOrder = 'ASC' THEN CONVERT(sql_variant, FileDataID) end ASC And I gotta tell you, that is ugly code, in my opinion. What I am trying to do is something like this: case when @SortColumn = 'Field1' then FileName end,
case when @SortColumn = 'FileDataID' then FileDataID end,
case when @SortColumn = 'Field2' then FileDesc
when @SortColumn = 'VersionNotes' then VersionNotes
end

case when @SortOrder = 'DESC' then DESC
when @SortOrder = 'ASC' then ASC
end and it's not working at all, i get an error saying: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'case' when i put a comma after the end on line 5 i get: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'DESC' What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any help -Madrak

Warning: Non-existent step referenced by @on_fail_step_id.

Warning: Non-existent step referenced by @on_fail_step_id.

how can i fix it? I think the error is due to step 4 not executing before calling it from stepe 1,2,3

SQL Browser Warnings In A Cluster

Nov 23, 2007

We have a 6 node cluster with 4 SQL Server named instances in the cluster. I am noticing a lot of warnings in the event log with the following information:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: SQLBrowser
Event Category: None
Event ID: 3
Description:
The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance
<instance name> is not valid.
The event occurs for all four instances.
Additional Information:
* OS is Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition w/SP2
* SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition w/SP1, hot fix level 2221
* All SQL services runs under the same domain user account

I did some internet searches and found several others who have had this problem. However, I didn't see any solutions. There also seems to be a similar problem with SQL Express but that is not what I am using.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

SQL Server's Latest Security Warnings

Jul 26, 2002

Hi. I'm Sara Cushman, a reporter for SearchDatabase. We're doing a story about the latest round of SQL server security warnings and patches.

How did you handle the situation? Did you drop everything else and deal with it? How did it compare with other SQL Server problems you have had? Were you able to handle it in a way that you feel left you without any vulnerabilities? If you haven't dealt with it, what are you waiting for?

We're looking for DBAs to share their stories. If you have some, reply here or email me at scushman@techtarget.com so that I can get in touch with you.

Thanks!

Capturing WARNINGS To Write To Error Log?

Jul 23, 2004

Hey y'all...

Anyone know how to capture SQL Warnings so I can write them to an error log? I can't seem to find any info on it in Books Online...

I can capture the errors just fine by using @@ERROR after a select, but what about warnings such as "Warning: Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET operation."

Thanks!
