Design Help – Access SQL Database Behind A Firewall From ASP .NET Pages.

Feb 26, 2004

Hi,

I am new to internet development and would like some advice on the technology used to access a SQL database that sits on a network behind a firewall.

** ASP .NET Page ** -> ** Web Server ** -> ** FIREWALL ** -> ** SQL **

So to give an example; from an ASP .NET page on the internet, I would like to populate a DataGrid with the contents of a single table from a SQL database. The SQL database is sitting on our company network behind a firewall.

Could someone please explain / point me in the right direction in how the ASP .NET page / Web Server can securely access the SQL database.

Thanking you in advance

Scott

Database Access Across Servers Or Firewall Issue

Jul 9, 2007

Hi All,

I am facing a strange issue with accessing data from SQL server 2000. We are using SQL Server authentication for connecting to SQL Server 2000 and ADO .Net SQL client in the application. The problem here is, we have databases installed in one of the servers in some other office location that is in different state but on same domain. We do development from two locations that is one from Virtual Machines hosted on servers where Database Servers are located and on our local desktops in India.

Now when I developed a test client in Virtual Machines which will call a web service to get datasetof some data and show them in DataGrid. When I run the test client in debug mode from Visual Studio 2003, then I am getting data in the DataGrid. Even when I just run the exe from Virtual Machine still I am getting data.

But when I copy debug folder of the test client to the local desktop in India and when I run the Test client I am not getting any data loaded on to the DataGrid. I am getting an empty dataset when I am running from the local desktop.

Also I have converted the VS2003 project to VS2005 and when I run the application from Local Desktop then I am getting the data loaded fine. I could not understand what is the problem, what is the difference between accessing data from VS2003 and VS2005 using webservice.

Is this a firewall issue or I am missing any thing here. The webservice method I am calling to get data is actually returning dataset when I am calling this method directly from the browser also and even through application in virtual machine.

I am still not able to come to terms with this problem. This is severely affecting our deployment. Please help us resolve this problem. Please let me know if you need more information.

Thanks,

Venkatesh

Hi all,

I have a Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005.
I´ve configured the following itens to allow remote connecitions:
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause
serious problems that may require
you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.To work around this problem, follow these steps on the
computer that Windows XP SP2 is installed on:

1. Make sure that the Log On As account for the MSDTC service
is the Network Service account. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type Services.msc, and then click OK.
c. In the Services window, locate the Distributed Transaction
Coordinator service under Name in the right pane.
d. Under the Log On As column, see whether the Log On As
account is Network Service or Local System.

If the Log On As account is Network Service, go to step 2.
If the Log On As account is Local System, continue with these steps.
e. Click Start, and then click Run.
f. In the Run dialog box, type cmd, and then click OK.
g. At the command prompt, type Net stop msdtc to stop the MSDTC service.
h. At the command prompt, type Msdtc €“uninstall to remove MSDTC.
i. At the command prompt, type regedit to open Registry Editor.
j. In Registry Editor, locate, and then delete the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTC
k. Close Registry Editor.
l. At the command prompt, type Msdtc €“install to install MSDTC.
m. At the command prompt, type Net start msdtc to start
the MSDTC service.

Note The Log On As account for the MSDTC service is set
to the Network Service account.

2. To allow the network transaction, you must enable
MSDTC. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type dcomcnfg.exe, and then click OK.
c. In the Component Services window, expand Component
Services, expand Computers, and then expand My Computer.
d. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
e. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click
Security Configuration on the MSDTC tab.
f. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click to
select the Network DTC Access check box.
g. To allow the distributed transaction to run on this
computer from a remote computer, click to select the Allow Inbound check box.
h. To allow the distributed transaction to run on a
remote computer from this computer, click to select the Allow
Outbound check box.
i. Under the Transaction Manager Communication
group, click to select the No Authentication Required option.
j. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click OK.
k. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click OK.

3. Configure Windows Firewall to include the MSDTC
program and to include port 135 as an exception. To do this,
follow these steps:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
c. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Firewall.
d. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click Add
Program on the Exceptions tab.
e. In the Add a Program dialog box, click Browse,
and then locate the Msdtc.exe file. By default, the
file is stored in the Installation drive:WindowsSystem32 folder.
f. In the Add a Program dialog box, click OK.
g. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click to select
the msdtc option in the Programs and Services list.
h. Click Add Port on the Exceptions tab.
i. In the Add a Port dialog box, type 135 in the Port
number text box, and then click to select the TCP option.
j. In the Add a Port dialog box, type a name for the
exception in the Name text box, and then click OK.
k. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the name
that you used for the exception in step j in the
Programs and Services list, and then click OK.
But, when the Windows firewal on the server is "On", remote connections
are not allowed, despite I´ve configured the Exceptions on the firewall.

Is there another task to solve this problem?

thanx!!!!

Interactive Data Access Through Firewall

Sep 7, 2007

Hi there!

I am facing this problem:

I have server A (SQL Server 2005) in LAN and server B (IIS 6) in DMZ.

Due to security policies, server A can initiate communications to B through a firewall; server B cannot initiate any communication to server A.

A web application on server B needs to interactively read/write data stored on server A.

I was reading something about repication, sql everywhere, service broker and something else.

Is there some integrated functionality in SQL Server 2005 that can help in this scenario, or should I develop some sort of sync application?

Thank you.
Bye!

DB Design :: Access Database / Where To Start

Jun 4, 2015

I'm trying to migrate a compensation database from Access 2010 to SQL 2014. It's not a very large database. It has 12 tables. One table, the Wage table, has information in it that I wouldn't consider as being a wage. For example, it has a few Life Policy columns. I want to design the database correctly in SQL, and not just duplicate the design flaws from Access.

DB Design :: How To Restrict Multiple Access To Same Database

Sep 16, 2015

I have a single database and 5 user which use this database for DDL and DML operations.

The problem we are facing here is, every time a user need to do some work in this database he/she had to ask(manually) to rest of the 4 users whether they are doing some task over the same DB or not. Sometime due to communication gap one user open any transaction which creates a deadlock for another user to execute any query over the same tables in this DBI want to get rid of this problem by making it configurable from SQL Server part so that if any user which is already accessing this DB, so the other user don't get access to it,  kind of Mutually exclusive behavior.

How to do this.

Tracking Member Views Of Clan Pages (was Table Design Help Needed)

Feb 28, 2005

I am helping a friend with a gamming website. There are pages which displays data from other clans.

Members need to register and login to view full clan details. User who have not logged in can only view partial data about a clan.

I need to keep track of the kind of hits each page received. That is I want to tell say "Clan X" that these particular members viewed your page these many times and on these dates and these members who have not registered have viewed your page these many times and on these dates.

I am using ASP with MS SQL.

I would like some help on designing the table layout that is efficient for keeping track of the visitors for each page.

Any help will be appreciated.

SQL Tools :: Firewall Blocking Access To 2nd Instance Of Server

Jun 19, 2015

I have trying to access a 2nd SQL Server instances running on my WHS 2011 server from my Windows 8.1 Pro client.

The first SQL Server instance I installed is SQL Server 2014 Developer.  This has been in place for many months and access from my client pc is not a problem.  The Developer instance was installed using standard settings so uses TCP port 1433 and I have verified this by checking the firewall rules. This instance name is <SERVERNAME>

As I want to host a personal website on my server I installed SQL Server 2014 Express as a 2nd instance on my WHS 2011 box for website database purposes.  After this installation both instances are accessible via Management Console on the WHS 2011 box.

The second instance is named as <SERVERNAME>SQLEXPRESS.

However, I am unable to access the SQLEXPRESS instance using Management Console on my client pc.  I know it is a firewall issue as when I turn off the firewall on the WHS 2011 box I can connect successfully.  The errors reported have resulted in my trying many things to resolve the problem but none have worked, e.g.

Use the default SQLEXPRESS instance to listen on all TCP ports (default installation option).  I checked the necessary firewall rules were set up correctly and they were, i.e. UDP ANY and TCP ANY for the SQLEXPRESS sqlservr.exe file.

Change the default SQLEXPRESS instance to list on a specific TCP port, e.g. 19344

Create an ALIAS for the SQLEXPRESS installation

The instance is definitely set up for Remote Access and is not Hidden.

Are there any other firewall rules I need to apply?

SQL Security :: Windows Server Firewall Not Blocking SSMS Access From All IPs

Nov 6, 2015

We have a hosted server with a website and sql server 2008 on.

The windows firewall is turned on for all networks / profiles and says its blocking incoming traffic.

I see a lot of login attempts in the windows logs where hackers are trying to connect to it. I can also access it via SSMS from multiple external ips.

Everywhere I've googled says that incoming traffic should be blocked by default by the firewall.

There are no obvious rules that allow SSMS access.

If I do a blocking rule on inbound rules for a single ip that does work, blocking it from that ip, but any other ip's can still connect.

In the firewall log file I can see the allowed connections on port 1433 etc. other than the dropped one from the test blocking rule.

MS Access- TOP / Offset? I Need To Order Results As Pages

Feb 18, 2005

Hi,

Sorry I have to post this here, but its sort of related to MS SQL anyway

I'm running a PHP system with MS Access. I need to order results in pages. (For those who are familiar with MySqL and Postgresql - I need the equivalent to LIMIT/OFFSET in MS Access).

I know I can "SELECT TOP 50" in my sql - so that solves the number of results per page.
But what about page 2,3,4..etc.... how do I select results from an offset?

There doesnt seem to be a solution for it

Thanks!

Remote Database Connection Through Firewall

Jan 29, 2001

I'm trying to adminster a remote MS SQL server from inside my company's firewall. I have the correct permissions to pass traffic through the firewall, but I need to authenticate to it first. When I try to register this remote SQL server through Enterpise Manager, it of course does not let me because of the firewall. Is there any way I can pass the firewall ID and password during the server registration process, and then pass the SQL server ID and password? I'm no SQL server expert by any means, but it doesn't look like it's possible. Are there any third party utilities that may accomplish this?

Thanks for the help!

Data Access, DataReaders, DataSets, Web Pages And Controls

May 10, 2007

I have a question about loading data on the page lode event. The question is more conceptual then how to.

Using C#, I would like to make a call to a SQL 2000 Server, with the use of a stored procedure return one row with eleven fields. Then use the data to fill five different controls. There is no manipulation of the data it is just presented as information. With a DataReader and the GetValues method using the resultant array I can fill the controls (or can I), or with a DataSet and the Load method do the same thing. Now this code can be placed in the code behind page or it can be implemented in a class. This is the only page that uses this combination of fields and controls; however I would think a more generic call to the data could be made then pick and chose the fields as needed. What process makes the most sense? Is what I just described even possible (as yet I haven’t tried it)?

As always thanks in advance for any thoughts, comments, and suggestions.

Why Clean Data Pages Written To L2 Cache To Make Space For Other Not Modified Pages

Oct 2, 2014

in microsoft doc there is written on the topic of BP Extensions with SSD's in SQL Server 2014: only clean pages are written to disk... does this mean data pages that have not been modified yet? or also those data pages that have already been modified, and where log has finished writing and the transaction has been marked as commited??

why are there clean data pages being written to L2 cache to make space for other not modified pages? I mean, shoudnt they be modified first, before letting other unmodified data pages into the Cache? I mean they have still to be modified..that makes no sense to me to page them out and page them in again just for other data pages...

Connecting Database To Asp.net Pages!

Jun 3, 2008

Hello,
Iam a new developer to asp.net, I have been trying to connect a database to a asp.net page but many times i failed. actually  i dont want to connect just directly by dragging and dropping controls rather i wanted to bind controls like textboxes and comboboxes but at first i think i have to make querystrings to and sqlconnection to connect to the database. I mean i have to manually code all these items to get my pages connected. but most of the time i face the bug which is:
Server Error in '/WebSite2' Application.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
is that because of the fact that i dont sql server management studio installed actually i tried the same process with some other pcs that does not have sql server insatlled but it was working pretty well, but now i dont have a sql server installed  and the problem still insists.
hope i have clarified my problem, sorry if it is a bit lenghty
thanks and regards

How To Reallocate PAGES Used By Database

Dec 2, 1998

Hello,

I have two identical databases DB1 and DB2. And each have 4 tables

In DB1 i will insert the data in the following order
For Every set of 4 records
Insert into Table1 Values ..
Insert into Table2 Values ..
Insert into Table3 Values ..
Insert into Table4 Values ..

In DB2, i will insert the data as

Insert into Db2..table1 select * from db1..table1
Insert into Db2..table2 select * from db1..table2
Insert into Db2..table3 select * from db1..table3
Insert into Db2..table4 select * from db1..table4

i.e. a bulk copy.

What is hapening is if i run DBCC SHOWCONTIG on both the database tables, it shows avg Space used for DB2 tables as more than 90% but for DB1 it is 4 - 5 %.

And if we check the device stace used by db1, it will be 10 times more by the DB2 for the same set of data. Both databases have different devices to store the log.

1. Can we have any command/procedure to reasllocate all the data so that minimum pages are used to store the data.

2. One more thing, is there any diff in SQL server 6.5 installed on Dell6100 ( Pentium Microprocessor ) and winNT 4.0 ? Because what is hapening is, if the log space is full, and if we Stop and start the SQL server on Dell system, it is not at all clearing the log space occupied. But in NT it is clearing the LOG.

3. Does any SQL server service Packs affect this..? If any let me know

4. If we create saperate LOG devices, what othere information is stored in the Data devices othere that data. Because in my case, DB1 is occupying more space than the actual data inserted.

ThanX

Database Design/query Design

Feb 13, 2002

Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:

-------
Fixture
-------
fix_id
fix_date
fix_played

----
Team
----
tem_id
tem_name

-----------
TeamFixture
-----------
fix_id
tem_id
homeorawayteam
goals

It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.

Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played

Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic

TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.

TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.

Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!

Is it possible to create an ado.net dataset so that I can display and use real data in my properties dialog box? First problem I have is to get the connection string from the data source string. I found no docs for that, especially the Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataExtensions.ReportDataSource class is not documented. Am I on the right way with that?

Database Access Via COM Objects - V- Database Access Via Stored Procedures

We have been asked to look into using stored procedures with SQL Server 7.0 as a way to speed up a clients site. 99% of all the articles I have read along with all the books all say Stored Procedure should be used whenever possible as opposed to putting the SQL in your ASP script. However one of my colleagues has been speaking to Microsoft and they said that that they were surprised that our client wanted to use Stored Procedures as this was the old method of database access and that now he should really consider using COM objects for data access as itis much faster. Has anyone got any views on this or know of any good aticles regarding this matter ?

Designing A Database Within A Database... Design Question Storing Data...

Jul 23, 2005

I have a system that basically stores a database within a database (I'msure lots have you have done this before in some form or another). At the end of the day, I'm storing the actual data generically in acolumn of type nvarchar(4000), but I want to add support for unlimitedtext. I want to do this in a smart fashion. Right now I am leaningtowards putting 2 nullable Value fields:ValueLong ntext nullableValueShort nvarchar(4000) nullableand dynamically storing the info in one or the other depending on thesize. ASP.NET does this exact very thing in it's Session State model;look at the ASPStateTempSessions table. This table has both aSessionItemShort of type varbinary (7000) and a SessionItemLong of typeImage. My question is, is it better to user varbinary (7000) and Image? I'mthinking maybe I should go down this path, simply because ASP.NET does, but I don't really know why. Does anyone know what would be the benifitof using varbinary and Image datatypes? If it's just to allow saving ofbinary data, then I don't really need that right now (and I don't thinkASP.NET does either). Are there any other reasons?thanks, dave
