Design Patterns Research - Dynamic Error Count Manipulation To Determine On What Type Of Error To Stop Job

Jan 31, 2008

I would like to fail a package depending on the error. The package extracts data from Excel files. I would like to continue processing if an Excel file is badly formatted, but stop processing if there is a serious issue. like the file server hosting the Excel files crashed.
I was thinking about dynamically changing the MaxeErrorCount property based on the Error ID or description.

Any ideas on an intelligent/simple way to do this

SQL Server 2012 :: Determine Which Column Is Causing Error Converting Data Type Varchar To Numeric?

Aug 14, 2014

I'm moving data from one database to another (INSERT INTO ... SELECT ... FROM ....) and am encountering this error:

Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 6
Error converting data type varchar to numeric.

My problem is that Line 6 is:

set @brn_pk = '0D4BDE66347C440F'

so that is obviously not the problem and my query has almost 200 columns. I can go through one by one and compare what column is int in my destination table and what is varchar in my source tables, but that could take quite a while. How I can work out what column is causing the problem?

Design Patterns For SQL

Feb 13, 2008

Design patterns are indispensable to improve the quality and productivity of system under development. Even though there are books available addressing the needs of object oriented programming, but useful information for SQL design patterns are hard to find.

I would appreciate if you could share any of the resources that you may have come across.

Patterns For Table Design

May 9, 2006

I am looking for something similar to patterns for table design, but I have been unable to find anything on that, or good rule of thumb performance guides for table design.

Most of the situations we face look like perfect candidates for patterns, and some good rules of thumb -- problems like scalable OLAP requirements PLUS real time reporting.

I am looking for several differnet approaches and a good summary of the trade-offs for each one.

Thanks!

Table Design For Recurrence Patterns

Oct 17, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to design some functionality that emulates the recurrence functionality of MS Outlook calendar. In the calendar, users can choose a recurrence pattern (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly or yearly). Depending on the radio button that is selected, different choices appear. I am unsure as to how to model this in the database.

Here's what I have so far:

A ScheduleDetails table that will store information applicable to all schedules, regardless of recurrence pattern. One of the columns in this table will store the recurrence pattern type (0 for daily, 1 for weekly, etc.). The valid values for this column will be stored in a look-up table.

Now, if daily is selected, the user can select a radio button called 'Every <#> days' OR a radio button called 'Every weekday'. My plan is to have a new ScheduleDailyRecurrences table that has a Days field. If 'Every <#> days' is selected, the value of Days will be the value entered by the user. Otherwise, if the user has selected 'Every weekday', the value will be -1. Is this a good way to do it? I feel as though I may be attaching too much meaning to the particular value.

If monthly is selected, it gets even more complicated. The user can either select 'Day <#> of every <#> month(s)' OR 'The <count> <day> of every <#> month(s)'. I'm not sure how to model this. In my ScheduleMonthlyRecurrences table, should I have a field called 'Pattern'? Depending on the value of this field, the details would be then be stored in yet another table? Or should I just have columns in ScheduleMonthlyRecurrences for each user-entered value? This would mean that some of the fields would not be applicable depending on the radio button that the user has selected.

It's a little difficult to explain, but if you go to the Recurrence button in Outlook calendar, you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for any advice.

SQLCLR-Patterns&&Practices/Object Builder Error: Operation That Was Forbidden By The CLR Host

Feb 6, 2007

Hi,

Using the Microsoft Patterns and Practices "Object Builder" (Dependency Injection/Builder library), I wrote an SQL CLR Stored Procedure (using VS 2005 Professional).

All compiles and deploys ok (to SQL Server 2005 Express).

However, at run-time, I get the following error upon a "BuilderContext" object's instantiation: {"Attempted to perform an operation that was forbidden by the CLR host."}

Thoughts on how to get ObjectBuilder working in the SQLCLR?

Thanks!

Andy

(posted below is the sample code...with the run-time exception occuring on the ...BuilderContext cxt = new ... call)

Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.BuilderStrategyChain chain =
new Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.BuilderStrategyChain();

chain.Add(new Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.CreationStrategy());

Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.Locator locator1 =
new Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.Locator(null);

// Get error when new'ing BuilderContext: "Attempted to perform an operation that was forbidden by the CLR host."
Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.BuilderContext cxt =
new Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder.BuilderContext(chain, locator1, null);

Getting Server Error Syntax Error Converting The Nvarchar Value 'Sonoma' To A Column Of Data Type Int.

Apr 20, 2007

Hi, all
I'm getting this error at runtime when my page tries to populate a datagrid. Here's the relevant code.
First, the user selects his choice from a dropdownlist, populated with a sqldatasource control on the aspx side:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sqlDataSourceCompany" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT [PayrollCompanyID], [DisplayName] FROM [rsrc_PayrollCompany] ORDER BY [DisplayName]">
</asp:SqlDataSource>
And the dropdown list's code:<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlPayrollCompany" runat="server" AutoPostBack="True" DataSourceID="sqlDataSourcePayrollCompany"
DataTextField="DisplayName" DataValueField="PayrollCompanyID">
</asp:DropDownList>
Then, I use the selectedindexchanged event to bind the data to the datagrid. Here's that code:
1 Sub BindData()
2
3 Dim ds As New DataSet
4 Dim sda As SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter
5 Dim strSQL As String
6 Dim strCon As String
7
8 strSQL = "SELECT [SocialSecurityNumber], [Prefix], [FirstName], [LastName], [HireDate], [PayrollCostPercent], " & _
9 "[Phone], [BadgeNumber], [IsSupervisor], [SupervisorID], [IsUser], [IsScout] FROM [rsrc_Personnel] " & _
10 "WHERE ([PayrollCompanyID] = @PayrollCompanyID)"
11
12 strCon = "Data Source=DATASOURCE;Initial Catalog=DATABASE;User ID=USERID;Password=PASSWORD"
13
14 sda = New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter(strSQL, strCon)
15
16 sda.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@PayrollCompanyID", Me.ddlPayrollCompany.SelectedItem.ToString()))
17
18 sda.Fill(ds, "rsrc_Personnel")
19
20 dgPersonnel.DataSource = ds.Tables("rsrc_Personnel")
21 dgPersonnel.DataBind()
22
23 End Sub
24

I'm assuming my problem lies in line 16 of the above code. I've tried SelectedItemIndex, SelectedItemValue too and get errors for those, as well.
What am I missing?
Thanks for anyone's help!

Dynamic String Manipulation

Sep 15, 2015

I have the following data in a table;

Create Table #Table (Column1 Varchar(1000))
INSERT INTO #Table
Select 'Execute Procedure @param1 = 100, @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
UNION ALL
Select 'Execute Procedure @param1 = 10, @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
UNION ALL
Select 'Execute Procedure @param1 = 100000, @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
Select * from #Table

I want to get rid of @Param1 in every row of the table so my final results look like this.

Create Table #FinalTable (Column1 Varchar(1000))
INSERT INTO #FinalTable
Select 'Execute Procedure @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
UNION ALL
Select 'Execute Procedure @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
UNION ALL
Select 'Execute Procedure @param2 = 1000, @param3 = ''longtext'' '
Select * from #FinalTable

The tricky part is that the @param1 value length varies so a straight forward substring or replace function won't work.

Error Connecting To SSIS - Error Loading Type Library/DLL

May 20, 2008

Hello,

I recently joined a company that is having an issue connecting to SQL Server Integration Services on one of their production servers. When trying to connect via management studio, both locally and remotely, they receive the error below. The server is a 64 bit server and is using third party replication (Veritas).

It sort of sounds like the issue described in this knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919224. However, we do not have a problem creating maintenance plans. I'd just give it a shot but its a production server and getting approval to do anything that modifies the registry with the registry replication setup is a pain, so I'd like to determine if there could be another cause first.

SQL Error Doesn't Stop Execution

May 25, 2006

I have some code that I inherited that I'm having an issue with. It includes a class for database functionality. At one point a call to a function, snippet below, results in a SQL error ('can't insert NULL into column MyColumn). What is amazing and frustrating me is that it just Blows Right by the Error! I thought it would raise the alarm bells, "hey! I got a sql error." I only see the error if I step through the code and look at the Exception that's caught. I tried removing the catch statement entirely, thinking that would at least cause an unhandled exception error, but no go.
How do I raise a big red flag to the user when SQL errors happen? And how could it not be doing that automatically? This is for an intranet site so I really don't care if they see ugly errors or not.
try{ sqlcommand = new SqlCommand(); sqlcommand.Connection = DBInterface.DBConnection; sqlcommand.CommandText = strSQL; sqlcommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text; nRowsAffected = sqlcommand.ExecuteNonQuery();}catch (Exception ex){ return -1;}

Error Caused Sqlserve.exe Stop

DTS Package Import Of HTM And Column Type Manipulation

Nov 24, 2004

I built a DTS Import Package to import an HTM file and it went smooth as silk. Replaced the file with another HTM Table of the same name and whammo a text field turned into an integer file and data goes missing. The first 20 or so rows of a particular column were all numbers. I tried to do a disconnected edit to alter the Source column to a string but the Edit button just disappears without changing the column's type value. The only way I can think of getting around this is to use something archiac like EDLIN to add a new table row at the top of the HTM Table with values to force the specified type. Anyone think of a better solution?

Any Error In A Data Flow Task Makes My Package Stop

Apr 10, 2008

Hi, this is my first post and I'm relatively new to SSIS so please go easy on me.

Without going into too much detail about it, I've set up a simple SSIS package which does this in a nutshell:

Foreach loop picks up all *.xls files in a given folder
1 - Puts the name of the current spreadsheet into a variable
2 - File System Task copies the current spreadsheet ("abc.xls") to a file called "work.xls"
3 - Data Flow task performs data extraction on "work.xls" and puts it into a SQL server database
4 - File System Task moves "abc.xls" into a "success" folder
Continues with loop - move onto next spreadsheet

This works fine, so long as the spreadsheets all have the same number of columns.

As soon as one of them has a column missing (believe me, this will happen - we're dealing with users here) the package falls over at step 3.

When the package comes across an erroneous spreadsheet, what I'd like to do is move the offending file to a failure folder (making step 4 either a success or failure file move) and carry on with the next one.

I know that you can have an error path (the red line) from any step within the dataflow task, but this doesn't help me because the error lies in the structure of the spreadsheet and not the contents.

I've already come up with a work around whereby each file is moved into the failures folder just after step 2, then moved from the failures folder into the success folder at step 4.

This almost gives me what I want, although of course the package still falls over whenever it encounters a dodgy looking spreadsheet.

Is there any way that I can get the package to do what I'm after?

Many thanks,

Simon

How To Stop Execution Of Stored Procedure If Error Occurs In Try/catch Block

Mar 3, 2008

Hello, I have stored procedure that when executed it will check to see if a given name is found in the database, if the name is found, I would like to have it continue on to do its work, however if the name is not found, I would like it to raise an error and then stop execution at that point, however, the way it is currently working is, if the name is not found, it catches the error, raises it and then continues on and tries to do its work, which then it bombs out because it can't. I wasn't sure if there was a way to stop the execution of the procedure in the catch statement. I don't think I want to raise the error level to 20-25 because I don't want to drop the connection to the database per say, I just want to halt execution.

Here is a simple example of what I have:

Code Snippet
begin try

if not exists (select * from sys.database_principals where [name] = 'flea')

raiserror('flea not found', 16, 1)
end try
begin catch

declare @ErrorMessage nvarchar(4000);
declare @ErrorSeverity int;
select

@ErrorMessage = error_message(),
@ErrorSeverity = error_severity();
raiserror(@ErrorMessage, @ErrorSeverity, 1);
end catch
go

begin

print 'hello world'
end

At this point, if the user name (flea) is not found, I don't want it ever to get to the point of 'Hello World', I would like the error raised and the procedure to exit at this point. Any advice would be appreciated on how to best handle my situation!

Thanks,
Flea

How Can I Receive An Error From The SMTP Task And Get It To Stop Failing When Attachment Isn't Found

Apr 9, 2008

Hi,

I am using the SMTP Task to send an email to about 200 individuals with their own specific attachment. If it cannot find the attachment the SMTP Task fails.

Is there a way to log the failure and have it keep going? That way it will still process everyone, but I would get a list of those who didn't receive the email because there was a problem.

I looked at Jamie Thompson's blog and he had a great script to send out emails. But if I use that, I haven't yet figured out how to pass the filename variable to it and attach the file. Even if I use that script, how do I deal with the errors?

Thank you for the help.

Stop Using Dynamic Sql

Jun 9, 2006

Hi,
The following stored procedure (SP) is using a dynamic sql to build the query.
How can this be written using a standard sql. i.e. NOT dynamically being built.
Initially I thought I can have something like the following query but it does not seem to be working for when the where caluse parameters are not passed.

Can you see how the SP can be altered please?

Determine Type By Variable?

Sep 25, 2013

I have a situation where I need to determine which type this record is. If type ID is 20, 23, or 25, then select F otherwise it is P.

Select FirstName
,Lastname
,address
, (If typeid = 20, 23, or 25 then F else P) as TypeDesc
From sometable

The number(20,23,25) are hardcoded in the stored procedure and I have them in a variable because there are over 30 different numbers.

Index Creation Causes Error The Conversion Of A Char Data Type To A Datetime Data Type Resulted...

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,I have a table called PTRANS with few columns (see create script below).I have created a view on top that this table VwTransaction (See below)I can now run this query without a problem:select * from dbo.VwTransactionwhereAssetNumber = '101001' andTransactionDate <= '7/1/2003'But when I create an index on the PTRANS table using the command below:CREATE INDEX IDX_PTRANS_CHL# ON PTRANS(CHL#)The same query that ran fine before, fails with the error:Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted inan out-of-range datetime value.I can run the same query by commeting out the AssetNumber clause and itworks fine. I can also run the query commenting out the TransactionDatecolumn and it works fine. But when I have both the conditions in theWHERE clause, it gives me this error. Dropping the index solves theproblem.Can anyone tell me why an index would cause a query to fail?Thanks a lot in advance,AmirCREATE TABLE [PTRANS] ([CHL#] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[CHCENT] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHYYMM] [numeric](4, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHDAY] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHTC] [char] (2) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOCREATE VIEW dbo.vwTransactionsASSELECT CONVERT(datetime, dbo.udf_AddDashes(REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHCENT)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHCENT) + REPLICATE('0', 4 -LEN(CHYYMM))+ CONVERT(varchar, CHYYMM) + REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHDAY)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHDAY)), 20) AS TransactionDate,CHL# AS AssetNumber,CHTC AS TransactionCodeFROM dbo.PTRANSWHERE (CHCENT <> 0) AND (CHTC <> 'RA')*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

How Do You Determine The Base Data Type Of A Column!

Sep 28, 2001

Does anyone know how to determine the base datatype of a column? I've tried using sp_columns but if there are user defined datatypes on the column it returns that name instead of the base datatype. I've also tries accessing systypes and syscolumns to determine the base datatypes.

Any tips or trick would really be apreciated!

Possible To Stop SSRS GUI From Destroying Hand Rolled Mdx In Datasets By Silently Reverting To Design Mode?

May 30, 2007

Since as soon as you extend your mdx datasets manually you can no longer switch back into design mode without losing your changes, right?

If that's the case, is there some way to disable design mode completely? i'm finding that the GUI has the tendency to SILENTLY revert the dataset editor back to design mode while I'm busy editing a layout, thereby losing my carefully crafted MDX.

Count Error

Mar 13, 2008

I have table #allcall
contains two columns
clid and date

For every record I want to find how many time clid appears in previous 30 days.

I use following code

select a.clid, a.date, (select sum(case when datediff(d, x.date, a.date)<=30
then 1 else 0 end) from #allcall as x
where x.clid=a.clid ) as nbr

from #allcall as a

but get error msg:
Multiple columns are specified in an aggregated expression containing an outer reference. If an expression being aggregated contains an outer reference, then that outer reference must be the only column referenced in the expression.

How to fix this problem?
Thanks

Row Count Error 724

Jan 25, 2007

I try to get a Row Count from data flow - and get Error:
[Row Count [724]] Error: The variable "User::COUNT_NEWIMGS" specified by VariableName property is not a valid variable. Need a valid variable name to write to.

I tried setting COUNT_NEWIMGS on Package Level, on Data Flow level (Int32 datatype)
i tried specifying variable as "COUNT_NEWIMGS", "User::COUNT_NEWIMGS", "@[COUNT_NEWIMGS]" - still the same error

And then when I'm ready to crash my keyboard (again) - I found on another forum that Row Count doesnt even update that variable until the dft is complete. WTF!!?!!

New To SSIS, Where To Research How To Normalize And Re-key Tables And Lookups?

Oct 13, 2006

I am just getting started studying SSIS with Kirk Haselden's "Integration Services" book. The problem I am trying to solve would seem easy enough to solve in code, but I am still early in the book and would like to be able to focus on the aspects of SSIS that would help me expedite this with SSIS, or to find out early whether what I need to do cannot be easily done.

The problem itself is simple enough: I have a database of roughly 100 tables. Ignoring the poor normalization in the database for the moment, my more pressing problem is that that I need to rekey all of the main OLTP tables from a mashup of different key schemes to UNIQUEIDENTIFIERS. For example, Client table is presenrly keyed on an INT, Client Number. ClientFile table is keyed as FileType = NVARCHAR(2), ClientNumber INT, FileNumber INT (incrementing, meaningless number). Child tables to ClientFile are the same key structure as ClientFile, plus yet another (incrementing, meaningless number) INT, etc like this. I would like to know if and how or where I should be looking to convert the Client table to a UNIQUEIDENTIFIER key, and the same for the ClientFile, makes its key also a GUID, and have a reference to the new Client tables GUID key as a foreign key in the ClientFile table, and on and on like that. The Client is at the top of the food chain.

In essence, I would like to have every table's key be called ID and be a UNIQUEIDENTIFIER (GuidRow), and I would like for example, the ClientFile table to reference the Client table with a column named ClientID. I would like ClientFile's children to have a foreign key called ClientFileID, and their own keys to be ID (RowGuid).

There are also several lookups in each table where, of course, the actual string values were stored instead of a key to the value (i.e. full state or country name instead of a code from a state or country lookup table) that I need to convert to something more sensible, like replacing the state name with a state code and a country name with a country code and link to appropriate respective tables. :) In fact, some of the values I need to break out from columns could also be keyed with RowGuids as well and I would much prefer to use those than string or INT keys.

Other than those problems, most of the rest of the data in those tables could essentially ba a straight copy operation since the source database is SQL Server 2000 and moving to SQL 2005 (one notable exception is that I am converting ntext columns to nvarchar(MAX) columns.

I am assuming this is probably ridiculously simple and I just haven't found my way there yet, but I still have much of this book and the help files to go through and the Index didn't give me any comfort that this was something I will or will not be able to do easily.

The real help I am looking for is two fold: a) somebody tell me to stop reading this 700 page (very well written) tome if I would be better off writing this all in code myself, and b) if this is something that most of you could do with SSIS with both hands tied behind your back, please at least help me focus on the important transforms and tools so that I don't smend a month becoming a data warehouse wizard and ultimately not solve the problem I am most concerned with.

Please be mecriful with the heat, I have already confessed that I am new to this and am scrambling to come up to speed as fast as I can, but am beginning to think this problem is either to trivial for coverage in this book, or perhaps just not what SSIS was designed to do.

Thanks much in advance for any guidance.

Exported Flat File Data Will Not Import To Same Table Without Extensive Data-type Manipulation

Jul 13, 2007

I'm moving data between identical tables and have to use a flat file as an intermediary. I thought: "No problem, SSIS can do a quick export to a file, then move the file to another server, then use SSIS to import the data to the new server."

Seems simple, right?

I'm hitting all sorts of surprising data conversion errors. I used the export wizard to create the export package. This works fine. However using the same flat file definition, the import package fails -- even when I have no destination. That is I have just one data flow task that contains only one control: the Flat File source. When I run the package the flat file definition fails with data type conversion and truncation errors. One of the obvious errors is for boolean types. The SQL field is a bit, SSIS defined the column as DT_BOOL, the output of the data are literal text values "TRUE" and "FALSE". So SSIS converts a sql datatype of bit to "TRUE" and "FALSE" on export, but can't make the reverse conversion on import?

Does anyone else find this surprising? I would expect that what SSIS exports, it can import given all the same table and flat file definitions. Is SSIS the wrong tool to do such simple bulk copies? I'd like to avoid using BCP because this process will need to run automatically within SQL Agent so we can leverage all the error tracking and system monitoring.
