Desperate! - Need Simple MSSQL Server Monitoring Scripts, Ideas, Etc That Can Be Performed By Operator Types (non-programmers)

Jul 20, 2005

Does anyone have any basic, simple scripts of sp's that I can give my
computer operators to use to monitor for serious conditions on our sql
servers? We are new in the ms-sql arena, a small shop and we cant
really purchase any tools to monitor these servers, but we need some
basic checks that we can use to make sure a server is performing in a
reasonable fashion, no blocks, cpu<xx%, memory not pegged, IO working,
etc...and we need to be able to do this without bugging our
programmers every time we are wondering why things are slowwnig down.

We are a split shop between as400s and sql servers, and our operations
staff has no problem performing this type of duty on the 400s. I think
since the sql servers are so easy to deploy into production, the idea
of how to monitor these things health got lost in the shuffle and
allowing the programmers to do it just serves to destabilize our
environment.

Please help! Our shop has turned to chaos since we went live with
MSSQL centric applications and everytime one programmer "resolves an
issue" some other programmers application starts to act up.

I Need Some Simple Security (for SQL Server Management Studio) In A Group Of Programmers.

Dec 5, 2007

Hi, I'm working in a web project.
In our lab, all the PCs are installed with SQL Server Management Studio, and the codes of the site are left by the previous batch of programmers.
Here is briefly how our web works, the web will call the sql server providing a username (userA) and password (aaaaaa) to log into the database, then the web can connect to the database to do various functions like select, insert, update and delete.

Currently anyone can go to thier SQL Server Management Studio on thier PC to edit various things like names and columns of tables by logging in as userA.

But, we now only want a small number of users to have the ability to change things in the database. What are some ways we can do that?

Something that I've thought of is that only allow userA to log in and do functions like select, insert, update and delete and do not have the ability to edit things like names and columns of tables. Have a userB with password only known to me that can have full control of the database which I have done.

Sql Types - Simple SQL Server Queries/handling Variable Types

May 26, 2005

SQL Server 2000, ASP.Net 1.1

I've been writing this stuff for a while, and can't seem to come to the
conclusion of how I should be retrieving data and assigning this data
to variables.

Since i'm using SQL Server, I'm convinced that I should be using the
datareaders GetSqlDouble (or whatever) function, but this would mean i
need my local variables to be one of the SQL types.  The problem
with that is, that there will have to be lots of conversions done by me
to be able to use a SQL type in my application.

For instance, I have a class where i'm retrieving dates.  In order
to retrieve them correctly (Null values included), I need to retrieve
them with GetSqlDateTime(), then when it comes time to display the date
in a table, i must first check for nulls, then convert to a
string.  This seems to be very cumbersome.  Would I be better
off just using GetDateTime(), and the .ToString method, and ignoring
Sql Types all together?

so, basically, how are you guys using your sql server data?  with
the supplied sql types, and doing all of the post-processing work
manually?  I feel like i'm having trouble conveying my
issue...hopefully someone knows what i mean....i'd just like some
direction to save trouble in the long run, since i feel like there's
got to be a better way...

Confused!

Thanks,
JJ

The Data Types Varchar And Bit Are Incompatible In The Add Operator

Feb 18, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to write a small dynamic sql statement and I am receiving the following error when working with a bit data type.

The data types varchar and bit are incompatible in the add operator

Here is what I have:

Code Snippet
create proc [dbo].[usp_SetupDatabaseUser]
(
@ProcAccess bit = 0
)
as
begin

set nocount on

declare @sql nvarchar(MAX)

-- Check for user existence
select @sql = 'if (' + @ProcAccess + ' = 1)

begin

print ''Hello World''

end'

exec @sql
end

After I execute, that is why I receive the error. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Flea#

Integration Services :: Error - The Data Types Are Incompatible For Conditional Operator

May 22, 2015

Im reading in a CSV wiht double quote text delimiters. Data came from mySQL.

One column in mySql is text(65535) which is equivalent to varchar(max) as far as i understand.

This particular column can be blank, not null, just blank. If its blank i want to put in a value so i added a Derived column shape and added the following formula:

LEN(my_Column) < 1 ?  "" :  (DT_TEXT)my_Column

I get the below error from this expression:

The data types "DT_WSTR" and "DT_TEXT" are incompatible for the conditional operator. The operand types cannot be implicitly cast into compatible types for the conditional operation. To perform this operation, one or both operands need to be explicitly cast with a cast operator.

I have tried this without casting but still get an error. As I have configured the column in the flatfile connector as DT_TEXT, im not sure where its getting DT_STR from.

Help With MSSQL Data Types

Dec 6, 2006

I currently run our company website using MS Access and ASP. I am trying to upgrade the database to MSSQL Server 2000. Unfortunately I'm not finding it that straight forward. I am trying to learn MSSQL but the learning curve is a bit steep.

I have a column in my MSSQL db called tbl_FULL which contains a full description of the product along with html formatting for line breaks, paragraphs and special characters (ie •).

I have set the data type to varchar 1800. All seemed to be well until I tried to enter new data, but unfortunately it only displays the first 50 or so characters.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Does MSSQL Have The Ability To Do Named Row Types?

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all. We have a mix of informix and mssql server and I want to knowif something we do in informix has an analogous feature in MSSQL. Wecan define a "row type" in informix, like so:create row type name_1(fname char(20),lname char(20));The when we create any table that includes a first and last name, wedo so using this row type like so:create table sometable(name name_1, some column,...etc)This allows us to set a standard for certain common fields and avoidshaving different developers build the same type of field in more thanone way, different lengths, etc.Is there a similar function in MSSQL server?

MSSQL: Storage Of Varying Data Types

Jun 2, 2001

I am developing an online web-based address book for multiple users. There are STANDARD FIELDS and CUSTOM FIELDS.

Standard fields include: Name,Street,City,State,Zip.
Custom fields are those defined by a specific user. For example:

User-A Custom fields:
Interest Rate <real>
Loan Amount <currency>
Start date <date>

User-B Custom fields:
Blood type <char 3>
Date of birth <date>
Referred by <varchar 50>

Different users can have different custom fields in their address book. As you can see, while the standard fields for each user can be

stored in a single table. However, I have several methods by which I can store the CUSTOM fields.

------------------------------------------------
Method 1: Create 2 separate tables called CustomField and CustomValue:

CustomField has fields:
FieldID <int>
FieldName <varchar 25>
UserID <int>

CustomValue has fields:
ValueID <int>
Value <varchar 50>
FieldID <int>

------------------------------------------------
Method 2: Create a separate Field and multiple Value tables for each data type:
CustomField, CustomCharValue, CustomIntValue, CustomMoneyValue, etc...

CustomField has fields:
FieldID <int>
FieldName <varchar 25>
FieldType <smallint> (determines which TABLE, below, contains the data)
UserID <int>

CustomCharValue
CharValueID <int>
IntValue <Varchar 50>
FieldID <int>

CustomIntValue
IntValueID <int>
IntValue <int>
FieldID <int>

etc....etc...

The structures of those tables would be similar to Method 1, but the data would be segregated based on their data type.

--------------------------------------------------

I'm thinking that while Method 1 will be easier to implement, Method 2 may offer me better performance if coded correctly. I'm going

to assume that I'll have at least 1-5 million records to work with over the course of my first year and I will need the ability to sort

records based on values in the custom fields as well.

My first question is: Which method should I be considering and is there an alternative or hybrid that I should be considering?

My second question is: What statements should I use in my stored procedure that will enable me to
retrieve a list of USERID, CustomFieldIDs and their values as one resulting table that I can query at will and with solid performance?

Desperate - Cannot Connect To SQL 2K Server

Jul 2, 2003

I have been down for 10 days now and don’t know where else to turn. If you can’t help, pls point me to where I can get help.

Here are the facts I have posted several times to the MS SQL NGs.

(Server: Win2K Adv Server, SQL 2K w/sp3a,
Wkstn: Win2K pro, SQL 2K w/sp3a)

1) SQL server is running and I can access all the dbs when on the server.

2) All the workstations login to the server just fine. Server is configured for Active Directory.

3) SQL server has only the default instance installed and is in mixed authentication mode.

4) I have registered SQL Server in the Active Directory, (right click on the server node in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager and select the Properties item from the popup menu … Active Directory tab etc - as per the article "SQL Server 2000 Active Directory Integration”.

5) When in EM on the workstation, I try to create a sql server registration

a) With Windows authentication - but I get this error:
SQL server registration failed because of the connection failure
displayed below. Do you wish to register anyway?

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL server connection.

b) With user = sa and pwd = sa (both are the correct values and case)
SQL server registration failed because of the connection failure
displayed below. Do you wish to register anyway?

Login failed for user 'sa'

5) I have checked out
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B269587 and done
everything it says.

Help - I haven't been able to connect for several days.

I have tried deleting the registrations several times - same results.
I have tried uninstalling sql 2K and reinstalling 3x and tested before and
after installing sp3a - same results.

Anyone have any ideas?

SQLRef - Website Created By Programmer To Programmers

Sep 14, 2006

Dear All Software Developers,I am a hardcore programmer who treat programming as a hobby. Recently,I have just created a website (http://www.sqlref.com) to share myknowledge and programming experience and to record down any new tricksthat I learned. This website started with SQL info. becaue I think SQLis the most basic but must know thing for all software developers.Eventually, I will make this website covers other topics such as .NET,SQL Server, Oracle, DB2 and so on. I will update it everyday.I think all developers should be able to access the SQL reference /Guide at any time, any place. Thus, I created this website for anybodywho need reference on SQL. While you are doing programming and stuckwith the SQL syntax, just open you web browser and typehttp://www.sqlref.comto look for you answer. I guess sqlref.com is easy enought to remember. No registration is required because I am not selling or marketinganything. Just a website for programmers to refer.I hope the website is useful to you all.Enjoy!Warmest Regards,Allen

Linked Server Issue: The Operation Could Not Be Performed Because The OLE DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' Was Unable To Begin A Distribut

Jan 16, 2008

Hi,
I was making a linked server connection between 2 SQL Server 2000 servers (both running on Windows 2003 Server), and I was creating an insert trigger in one of the SQL Server table to insert the same value to the other SQL table. But when I try to make an insert to the table, the following error occurred :

Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure <triggername>, Line xx
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].

I tried to change the trigger into a SELECT statement only and the error still occurred. But when I tried to insert a row directly to the linked server via Query Analyzer, it succeeded.
I have read KB 280106, KB 306212, and KB 329332, and I've tried SET XACT_ABORT ON statement, but none of them can solve the problem.
If there's anyone who has idea on what's wrong or has a suggestion what I should try please help.
Thank you in advance.

SQL Server 2000 Vs Sql Server 2005 Upgrade Problem Any Ideas?

May 14, 2007

In our application we use the ADODB.Recordset.

In SQL server 2000

If there was a view that joined 2 tables and I accessed the view the 2 ID fields in the view would still have the AutoIncrement attribute still set to true so that I knew those were Identity fields.

In SQL server 2005

I dont' know why but if you reference a View that has Identiy AutoInc fields in ADO it doesn't keep those properties.

Also for whatever reason we Set the ID field to 0 to let ourselves know its a new Record. SQL 2000 let it happen and assumed it to be null where as By Setting the ID to 0 in SQL 2005 causes it to blow up on me.

Is there some sort of setting in SQL that can make SQL 2005 work like SQL 2000 in these two instances...

SQL 6.5 - Server Virtual Memory Leak - Any Ideas?

Nov 20, 1998

Local SQL 6.5 SP4 on a Windows NT SP4 workstation (Pentium 350 / 128 MB).
SQL server has 32 MB of RAM. It starts well but begins continuously eating up virtual memory by 16k blocks in a second,
until it takes all virtual memory.

Server's shutdown generate following error in Event log System section:

Event ID: 7011
Source: Service Control Manager
Description: Timeout (120000 milliseconds) waiting for transaction response

When I start Server from command prompt with -f switch, it did not eat virtual memory,
and did not generate any error in Event log at shutdown.

Many thanks for any help.
