Desperatly Need Help With MSDE Installation And Config
May 13, 2005
Hi all, I know read all the posts already up on this subject... Hear me out.
Can anyone give an easy to understand, and I mean easy method for installing MSDE and configuring it so that I can connect to my server using Visual Studio.NET C#. I am having no end of troubles and I don't really understand why. I can log into osql using
osql -S BIGJ -E
that gets me to
1>
No problems so far
but when I try to connect using
SqlConnection("Server=BIGJ;DataBase=registeredUsers;Integrated Security=SSPI");
I am having no luck and I don't really understand why
Here is the stack trace
[SqlException: Login failed for user 'BIGJASPNET'.] System.Data.SqlClient.ConnectionPool.GetConnection(Boolean& isInTransaction) System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionPoolManager.GetPooledConnection(SqlConnectionString options, Boolean& isInTransaction) System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Open() ADOAccess.WebForm1.Button1_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) in c:inetpubwwwrootadoaccesswebform1.aspx.cs:52 System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e) System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.System.Web.UI.IPostBackEventHandler.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(IPostBackEventHandler sourceControl, String eventArgument) System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(NameValueCollection postData) System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain()
I think I am not understanding the fundamentals of SQL server or something so if anyone can help or point me to a good tutorial that will help me not only solve my problem but also understand what is going onas well.
Thanks everyone

Please help,I am trying to install MSDE 2000 so that Backup exec will run on thisserver. I have gotten so far as to find an entry in my SQLSTP.TXT filethat says that c:mssql7 was detected so the install fails.Now, to start with there is no directory called C:mssql7 on thisserver. I have gone through all MS articles on manual removal of SQLserver and instances. I have searched the registry for mssql7 andremoved any keys that matched, as per MS article I have searched onSQLBOOT.dll and it is not present anywhere on my system and I still getthe same results.2:07:44 Begin Action: Detection12:07:44 SQL Server version already installed: 7.00.62312:07:44 Previous Install SQL Path: C:MSSQL712:07:44 Previous Install SQL Data Path: C:MSSQL712:07:44 End Action Detection12:07:44 Begin Action: ODBCLocked12:07:44 End Action ODBCLocked12:07:44 GetDefinition returned: 112:07:44 Previous SQL Server ProductType: MSDE [0x4]12:07:44 This combination of Package and Operating System allows a fullproduct install.can anyone think of anything here..what else could be causing the server to think there is a previousversion of SQL 7 on this box!!!?

Hi All
I am having a little trouble setting up MSDE.
I downloaded the most recent version of MSDE (sql2ksp3.exe) from the Microsoft site to my desktop.
I double clcked on the files to extract them, it created a sql2ksp3 dir on c drive.
I went to command prompt and entered the following in the c:/sql2ksp3/msde directory:
setup.exe DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 SAPWD=**REMOVED** then enter.
The setup wizard started then finished after about 30 seconds.
I can't find MSDE anywhere as program just a folder with the original setup programs.
I know this is a total gummy question, can anyone point me in the right direction.
I didn't have MSDE or SQL Server prevoiusly on the system.
Thanks in advance

Hi Folks,
I've jumped over from the sister site xtremevbtalk.com to ask the question:
Has anyone ever seen an issue where when installing MSDE, during the installation the pc reboots of its own accord?
After the MDAC is installed as part of the installation the pc reboots and upon boot up, MSDE is not in the program files directory. Instead it's sitting in the C: root. This occurs for a straight MSDE install or with an Instancename install.
There does exist a Microsoft SQL Server folder in the Program Files but it is incomplete. It's missing the Binn folder. Also, there is no reference to MSDE in the Add/Remove programs tool but ther MSDE service does show up in the Services. However I cannot start these as they are pointing to the correct location.
To date, I have tried removing the instance and installation from the registry. I have turned off all AntiVirus software. I have ensured I am using an Admin user profile. I have tried a blank sa passowrd for the installation. all of this is to no avail.
I am seriously stuck with this now and I am in dire need of a resolution so if anybody has any ideas or has seen this one before, I love some help.
Thanks,
Gb :)

I see the SqlServer agent installed and also folders inside C:Program FilesMicrosoft Sql Server folder, but SQL is still not listed in the installed programs

Hi,
I've a problem with connecting to my local MSDE installation. I'm using Windows XP Pro SP1 and logged in as administrator.
I've installed MSDE without further options (=setup SAPWD="password"). After that I installed some examples from Microsofts '101 Visual Basic.NET applications' using 'setup SAPWD="password" INSTANCENAME="NetSDK"'. Now I have 2 services running, 'MSSQLServer' and 'MSSQL$NetSDK'.
Then I followed the examples from a german book and created a Dataset etc. to access data from the Northwind database. The following line is created as SQLConnection1:
Me.SqlConnection1.ConnectionString = "workstation id=""COMPUTERNAME"";packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source=" & _
"""(local)NetSDK"";persist security info=False;initial catalog=Northwind"
CType(Me.DataSet11, System.ComponentModel.ISupportInitialize).EndInit( )
When I right-click on the SQLDataAdapter1 and select 'Preview Data' everything works fine and I could see 9 Employee records. But when I then start the application it could not connect to the server. The error appears already in the first line, a simple connection call:
Me.SqlConnection1.Open()
Please could someone help me solve this issue? I already read several postings, here, on other sides, and on MSDN. I found information about a user account 'APSNET' which I am not allowed to implement due to security reasons. I also found the information about named pipes and TCP/IP, and so I added 'Network Library =dbmssocn' to the end of the SQLConnection-string, but with no success :-(
Many Thanks in advance for your support!

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. Â My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.Â
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
Thanks a lot.

Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?

Hello all,
I'd like to know what's considered a best practice in the following scenario...
We're in the process of converting DTS to SSIS, our current SQL2K setup has one DTS package per database, each database and package are mirror images of each other, with the exception of connection properties and the files path's they pull from. (Occasionally there may be a one off Execute SQL Task that differs from package to package...but this will be handled in a different manner outside of the package from this point on)
From a administration perspective this has been somewhat cumbersome, as every time there is a schema change we need to update the transformations in each individual package...after updating 120 packages my index finger has a bad case of carpel tunnel!
My thought with SSIS is that I can create one package, with many configuration files (one for each database).
Now my question is, 1) is this a good idea? 2) Anytime we create a new database (New Customer = New Database) and need to create a new xml config file, do I have to create the config in BIS/SSIS package then redeploy the package?...or Can I simply add a new config file to the appropriate directory and reference this config in the scheduled job?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

says it cannot find the installation package and to use a valid copy of

Hi,My application is acting weird and the research I've done leads me to an answer why it's breaking, but not how to fix it.My web app is hosted by a remote company. I have the main website sitting in the root web directory and in a subfolder I have another application that will handle login and updating the content in the SQL 2K5 backend (not an Express DB).The website itself is able to pull in informaiton from the DB without any trouble, so I know it's able to connect to the DB and everything is peachy. The login app though is acting as though it can't get to the DB. I've applied the ASPNET schema to the DB using the aspnet_regsql.exe from the framework and the login application is using the same connection string as the main website.One thing to note here is that the website and the login app have seperate web.config files since they were developed as different projects.With my customized provider defined in the web.config for the login app I get this error on page load:"Parser Error Message: It
is an error to use a section registered as
allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This
error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an
application in IIS." If I comment out the custom provider, the page loads but when I try to create a user it tells me that "...the SQL Server couldn't be contacted. This may be because it doesn't accept remote connections." Thing of it is that it's not a remote connection and it's the same connection string and db as the other site.Now, the research I've done points at the two different web.config files, which makes sense. But how do I make the one web.config work for both the website and the subdirectory with the login app? Keep in mind that I can't create any new virtual directories or modify IIS since this is a remote hosting company.Can someone help me understand the fix with a little more clarity?
