Jul 31, 2013I have a table where the designer allowed time reporting for 8 different types of activity on each timecard, then stored the hours by activity in 8 separate columns in the database. Example:
Table A.
Column Headers: Employee|Date|Phase1Hours|Phase2Hours, etc...
Data: Fred Jones| 7/15/13 |3|3, etc...
The problem is there is no way based on this structure to get an employee's hours for the day in columnar form.
To get this data into columnar form I have used Select queries with Union All, for instance:
SELECT Employee, Date, Phase1
FROM Table A
UNION ALL
SELECT Employee, Date, Phase2
FROM Table A
,etc.....
Query is running slow (I am guessing it is because the same table is repeatedly being accessed).
Displaying User Entered Data

I'm having a problem with some data in our database, basically a web app is storing data into the DB and then recalling it to display to a user. The problem I am having is that for one particular function the DB is causing the app to fail, the app code works for 95% of the data inserted into the DB by the users but it is failing on a few records.. I'v gone through the data manually checking for funny characters or spaces or anything else which is different from the other records, but everything seems to be in order. I doubt very much that this is a system app code problem as the code is working perfectly for all the other records...
Can anyone advise me on what else I can check.. really stuck on this one guys

Preventing Invalid Data From Being Entered

I need to be able to prevent an invalid character from being entered into a sql 2000 databae on import from oracle.
In short, I need to exclude a certain character from being entered and need to be able to send an email which specifies that an attempt was made to enter this character, if the change was due to an insert or an update, the row to be affected in the target database, date and time info. Also the source of the data.
If this is not possible, is it viable to remove the character after insert and still send the email withe the required info?
Any one any ideas on the cleanest way to achieve this?

I have tried alot.
The result is my columns in my table accept maximum 900 character.
But the type of my column I try to add a value is text..

when trying to enter data into a feild, the feild type is char and the length
is 100 i'm entering text 3 words long but no where near a 100 characters long

Right now i have different solutions, 1) a stored procedure which loops through all the days in the given month against a select statement on Table A2) a stored procedure, create a temp table which contains all the dates in the given month, and a single select statement using where condition (select * from.... where datefield not in (select * from...))I want to know what is the best solution of these two or any other solution.Thanks

Mar 28, 2008I have 2 SQL server 2000 machines, I need to take a table from each one and combine them together based on a date time stamp. The first machine has a database that records information based on an event it is given a timestamp the value of variable is stored and a few other fields are stored in Table A. The second machine Table B has test data entered in a lab scenario. This is a manufacturing facility so the Table A data is recorded by means of a third party software. Whenever a sample is taken in the plant the event for Table A is triggered and recorded in the table. The test data may be entered on that sample in Table B several hours later the lab technician records the time that the sample was taken in Table B but it is not exact to match with the timestamp in Table A. I need to combine each of these tables into a new SQL server 2005 database on a new machine. After combining the tables which I am assuming I can based on a query that looks at the timestamp on both Tables A & B and match the rows up based on the closest timestamp. I need to continuously update these tables with the new data as it comes in. I havent worked with SQL for a couple of years and have looked at several ways to complete this task but havent had much luck. I have researched linked servers, SSIS, etc Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to create a database for keeping track of payroll data for employees where the supervisors (job coaches) on our workshop floor can use a Pocket PC device to record the hourly employee data on the fly. Then at the end of the day, the supervisor can place the device in a cradle of some sort and synch the newly entered data into the main database.
I'm guessing that SQL Server Compact edition would be perfect for this type of task? Is that correct? Can someone give me recommendations on how to go about setting this up? What should I use as the main database? SQL Server? Access? Any advice is appreciated!

Nov 28, 2006Hello I have a project that uses a large number of MS Data access pages created in Access 2003 and runs on MS SQL2005.
When I am on lets say my client, (first page in a series) data access page and I have completed the fields in the (DAP), I am directing my users to the next step of the registration process by means of a hyperlink to another Data access page in the same web but in a linked or sometimes different table.
I need to pass data entered /created on the first page to the next page and populate the next page with some data from the first page / table. (like staying on the client name and ID when i go to the next page)
I also need the first data access page to open and display a blank or new record. Not an existing record. I will also be looking to creata a drop down box as a record selector.
Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am some what new to data access pages so a walk through would be nice but anything you got is welcome. Thanks Peter€¦
Determine Row Of Data In A Table Through SSIS
Jun 13, 2013I have a requirement based on 2 parts to determine a row of data in a table through SSIS :
a. Work out the LEG_SEQ_NBR of the VESSEL, VOYAGE and LEG already stored in table1.
To do this join table1 and join table2 through BL_ID column.
b. Work out the 2ndVESSEL, 2ndVOYAGE and 2ndLEG.
Once we have identified the LEG_SEQ_NBR of the VESSEL,VOYAGE, LEG already stored in table1 we need to add '1' to this value and then find that LEQ_SEQ_NBR in table2.
The DDL of table1 and table2 along with the test data are as below:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[table1](
[BL_ID] [decimal](10, 0) NOT NULL,
[VESSEL] [nvarchar](10) NULL,
[VOYAGE] [nvarchar](12) NULL,
[LEG] [nchar](3) NULL,
[Code] ....
For Example:
BLNO = 21 and BL_ID = 1
Current Vessel/Voyage/Leg in table1 = CEUR 032E E
LEG_SEQ_NBR of this Vessel/Voyage/Leg in table1 = '1'
Therefore if we add '1' to this value we'd be looking for LEG_SEQ_NBR '2' as the 2ndVESSEL,2ndVOYAGE,2ndLEG.
In this case that would = MARB 794S S
How this can be worked out through an SSIS job ?
Programmatically Determine That A Report Has No Data?

I'm creating ssrs reports via the web service render method & would like to be able to determine when a report has no data.
Currently what I'm doing is rendering the report twice - once as a pdf (the format that the report needs to be in) and once as a csv. I then check the csv for a specific string placed in the norows property of the report table.
Is there a better way of doing this? It seems to me that this would have been a good candidate to include in the warnings array.
Between this issue & the hacks required to get data into the header I'm thinking that I should maybe reconsider some other reporting options...

Sep 28, 2001Does anyone know how to determine the base datatype of a column? I've tried using sp_columns but if there are user defined datatypes on the column it returns that name instead of the base datatype. I've also tries accessing systypes and syscolumns to determine the base datatypes.
Any tips or trick would really be apreciated!

"Data Integrity Report"
I need a Stored Procedure that takes a table name as a parameter and returns a cursor suitable as a data source for a pre-built Report Services report (I guess Report Services would call the SP?).
The cursor/report needs to have the following columns:
Ordinal_Position (I.E. Column number)
Column_Name
Number Of Blank Rows (how many missing values for this column in this table)
Difference (Between total rowcount and population of this column)
Data_Type
Column_Length (either Character_Maximum_Length or the numeric widths rolled up with COALESCE?)
Sample Data (The contents of the "first" row in the table, based on a TOP(1) and ORDER BY xxx)
The report should look like this (for a table with 100 rows):
Col Num Col Name # Blanks Difference Data Type Col Length Sample Data
1 Name 12 88 varchar 30 Sally Smith
2 Address 34 66 varchar 45 123 Main St Apt 45
3 Acct_ID 0 100 varchar 4 AB12345
Using the "Information_Schema.Columns" I can get everything I need except for #3 (blanks count) and #7 (Sample data).
Is it possible to do this as 1 query, with a CTE or APPLY or something, or do I need to do a table variable based on the Information_Schema and then use dynamic SQL and row-by-row COUNT(*) for each column? And the same for the Sample Data.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Detect / Determine Data Stored In Varbinary Field
Oct 21, 2014I have several tables a varbinary column in a database. They have names like CSB_BLOB or OBJECT_BLOB. Now I am having intermittent success with getting the data out.
For example this query returns readable text from this data.
0x46726F6D3A20226465616E6E6167726.....etc --data as stored in the column
SELECT CAST(CSB_BLOB AS VARCHAR(MAX)) AS 'Message' FROM OBJECT_BLOB
However this column has the following query results.
0x0001000000FFFFFFFF01000000000000000C....etc. --data as stored in column
--this query returns empty result
SELECT (CSB_BLOB AS VARCHAR(MAX)) AS 'Message' FROM CSB_STATUS_LOG
--this query returns no change???
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(MAX), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX), CSB_BLOB, 2), 2) FROM CSB_STATUS_LOG
0001000000FFFFFFFF01000000000000000C....etc
Obviously there is a difference between the two but I am not educated enough to interpret this difference. What do I need to learn / read so I can look at the data in one of these BLOB columns and know how to convert it to something meaningful?
Something like:
1. Try to cast as varchar to see if it is text.
2. Turn into a byte array and see if it is a jpg
3. Turn into a byte array and see if it is a pdf
4. Convert it to hex and then cast as varchar
5. etc....
SQL Server 2012 :: Determine Which Column Is Causing Error Converting Data Type Varchar To Numeric?
Aug 14, 2014I'm moving data from one database to another (INSERT INTO ... SELECT ... FROM ....) and am encountering this error:
Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 6
Error converting data type varchar to numeric.
My problem is that Line 6 is:
set @brn_pk = '0D4BDE66347C440F'
so that is obviously not the problem and my query has almost 200 columns. I can go through one by one and compare what column is int in my destination table and what is varchar in my source tables, but that could take quite a while. How I can work out what column is causing the problem?

Oct 12, 2007My database has many table, each table has a DateEntered (datetime), EnteredBy (nvarchar(50), LastUpdate (datetime), and LastUpdateBy (nvarachar(50). Is there an easy (ha) way to pull a list of the records that were entered and/or updated for a date range. Hopefully without a select for each table.
Maybe a tool someone knows of?

I have the problem that the below defined paramter gets entered in the database as a interger. the Field in the DB is a nvarchar(5) and the controll that suplies the value is a TextBox
this is the parameter definition:<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbComment" Name="Comment" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />
Why do I get this error, why does ASP to whant to make an integerfrom this text field? When putting a interger value in the textbox all works well and the data gets posted to the database.
I use a SqlDataSource with automatic generated script.

What's the most efficient way of joining a 1 to many relation, where a record in table A will have multiple records in table B.
I'd like to select every record in table A but only joining the last relevant record from table B. So:
Table A:
A1 Prj1
A2 Prj2
Table B:
B1 A1 23/12/2005
B2 A1 26/12/2005
B3 A1 2/1/2007
B4 A2 25/12/2006
B5 A2 1/1/2007
So I'd like to list using the most efficient way this:
A1 Prj1 B3 2/1/2007
A2 Prj2 B5 1/1/2007
I'm assuming this is NOT the most efficient way:
select A, (select top 1 date from B orderBy ...)
Any suggestions?
Detect No Time Entered For Datetime
Jul 20, 2006I have a VB.NET program that displays the time extracted from a SQL Server database datetime datatype by way of a User-defined scalar function I created. However, sometimes information is entered into the system through the program that does not have a time-- only a date. SQL Server automatically assigns a time of 12:00 AM to these values (since they're a datetime). Is there any way to detect when this happens in my user-defined scalar function so that when I try to extract time values, I can instead return a message/time of my choice? I would rather not assume that all 12:00 AM values are automatically inserted by SQL Server since this might not actually be the case.

Roll Date If Time Entered Is After Midnight

In ASP.net, is there any elegant way to handle a set of time inserts from a form when the 2nd time is past midnight?
Specifically, I have a form with 2 textboxes on it (startTime and endTime) that are set up to accept time values (using AJAX MaskedEditExtender for formatting/validation - pretty cool). This data is posted to a sub that enters the data into a table (T_Details). However, I've noticed that the data inserted as part of the record (SQL field is smalldatetime) doesn't take into account the fact that a time value past 23:59:59 in the "endTime" textbox is a time on the next day - it simply rolls to an A.M. date for the same day as the date for the pre-midnight value from the "startTime" textbox.
I'm sure that I can simply do some conditional coding and modify the date if necessary but is there a better way to do it? Thanks as always...this forum is a great resource
