Developing App That Will Use SQL Server Express On Back End...
Sep 21, 2007
Hi...
I have the full version of SQL Server installed on my machine and am developing an app using BI DTS packages, VB.Net, SQL SPs, etc.. I will need to deploy this app w/SQL Server Express (SSE).
-Do I have to install SSE on my development machine for the purpose of creating the install package of my application? I am afraid that if I do install SSE on my machine, it may mess up my installation of the full version of SQL Server... will it?
-Can you point me to a link with information about how to do the development with the full version of SS, and create the installation package using the SSE?
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
I am using MS SQL Server 2005 Express edition with my application.
I am new to SQL Server.. Can any body help me in solving the following:
1) Is there any automatic back-up provision available in MS SQL Express edition ? 2) How can i take the back-up/archive my data ? 3) How to implement Data aging & Data pruning by using MS SQL Express edition 2005 ?
Hi folks,I was working on MS sql server 2005 evalution where i have built a number of databases. However, i came to discove that the evalution version has expried before i finished my work. Now i have disinstalled the sql server 2005 and installed the Sql express edition. My concern here is how can i keep my databases so they can work with sql express edition?Thank you very much in advance.
I am having a nightmare of a time with my Sql Server 2005 Express. My computer crashed on Friday the 13th - of course. I saved all my files onto another drive and wiped out C: I brought everything back in but I started a new file for my Visual Basic projects. After asking questions I found this was a major no-no So I brought my original folder back in. This solved some of my problems I was having with Visual Studio and Visual Web, but I am continuing to have problems with Sql Server. I will explain these two problem they may be related, I don't know. When I run my Visual Website on a server I get this message:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file(then my file name)failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
And my second problem is when I attempt to run Sql Server Management Studio Express I get this error message:
There is no editor available for (then my file name) .mdf
Make sure the application for file type(.mdf)is installed.
This is the following Error when i tried to back up database in MS SQL SERVER 2005 Express Edition.

I am trying to restore database from network drive but sql server 2005 express is giving error "system.data.sqlclient.sqlErroratabase <dbname> cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space (microsoft.sqlserver.express.smo)." But when I restore database from "C:" or local drive it alows to do so. Can anyone help.
I am in the planning stages of a front-end to access sql server databases. The project involves analysis of stored data as well as storing results of the analysis. The classes for the analytical part is fairly complex so I would like to speed up the data manipulation part of the project. I am already familiar programming with ADO but I was hoping for a more complete solution. Is there a sdk or example code (third-party OK) that could facilitate this?
The client is not especially fond of .NET and would prefer to use VB6. However, with the right solution, C# or VB.NET would be acceptable languages.
Does anybody know of a way to rollback SQL Server 2005 databases back to SQL Server 2000? Is there a way of doing it without resorting to Copy Database Wizard? I love to find a way of attaching a SS 2005 database to a SS 2000 instance without any issues.
I recently upgraded to SS 2005 and I am very unhappy with the SS 2005 and I want to rollback to SS 2000, which was a lot more stable. I am having several major issues that are affecting my whole company's day-to-day operations and the managers are not happy. Some of the issues include night time batch running very sluggish for no apparent reason. This is a biggest problem because it only occurs once or so a week and causes a disturbance with the daily activities when the night time processing isnt completed on time. The rest of the time, the batch processing runs great, even a little better then on SS 2000. I don't believe it is a matter of my application needing to be retuned because if that was the case, then why isn't it running sluggish every night? Also, it's never the same day that the sluggish behavior occurs. If it was occurring on the same night, then I would have something to investigate within our application, but it doesn't. Another issue that I am having involves a night time job that restores a copy of the production database to the Data Warehouse server to be used for updating the data warehouse. Again, most of the time it runs great (~2 1/2 hours), but once or twice a week, it goes stupid and takes 6 1/2 hours for no apparent reason. Again, it is not happening the same day either, which could give me something to invesigate. On SS 2000, this same job ran flawlessly. Never I did I run into situation that the database restoration took that long to run. Even another issue involves a SQL Server Agent Job that was put into suspended state. What's a suspended state and how can I get it out of suspended state? I can find no information about suspended state in BOL. I did a Google and nothing came up. If this suspended state was put in for security reasons, great, but then tell me how I can remove the suspended state. I am also not happy with the fact that I can't get accurate information about the queries that are actively running at that particular moment. In SS 2000, when I noticed high CPU usage on the server, I would run the sp_who2 active stored proc and it would show me all the active thread and how much CPU it was consuming. I would then find the running threads with the highest CPU numbers and investigate the query and see if we could improve it. Now in SS 2005, I get in the same situation and run the sp_who2 stored proc, and there is no smoking gun. All of the active threads are showing very little CPU usage, which I am very suspect of. What the heck happen to sp_who2? I looked at some of the other ways of looking at running processes (i.e... sys.sysprocesses) and they don't appear to be giving the information that I need.
I am very unhappy and I just want to roll back to SS 2000 and wait a couple of years before I upgrade to SS 2005.
I'm beginning development on a medium/ sized in-house web based system. Well moving from asp/mysql to asp.net/sql server. Re-doing DB design as well.My question is does it make sense for me to develop the SQL DB in Visual Studio 2005 pro, and then later move it to a real SQL server? Or basically what is the best and/or most practical way to do this development. Any other IDE's out there? Thanks
I need to find all information about distributing SQL Server XE and applications using it . Is it legal ?? should it be used just for educational use?!!! could it be used to develop a commercial software !! what limitations are controlling this ??

I need to schedule SQL Express backup from ASP Page. I was trying to use SQLDMO to schedule jobs but found that SQL Agent is not supported in Sql Express. I tried to use Scheduler.SchedulingAgent.1 to add task in schedular but getting Invalid class string error. Schedular dll is only supported in site server. What would be the best solution for me to schedule back for SQL Express??
Im using the free version of ms sql 2005 studio express. I can upload databases, edit them and check them etc.
how do I back them up on to my pc, I do not have the server with me, my ms database is hosted on namesco.co.uk hosting.
I know how to right click the database, click task and back up. But I dont know where to back it up?
Whenever I try to back up to somewhere on my c: drive it won't. I think it also only backs up on a .bak files. Which I don't have.
I've looked on the net and it says you need a seperate hard drive or tape drive for back. Do I need to add another hard drive to my pc, if yes what do I format it as. And also how do I get a .bak file?
Here is a screenshot of where I can get to:(you might have to copy and paste them in your browser, there bmp so are big images)
http://www.uktattoostudios.co.uk/images/ms1.bmp
http://www.uktattoostudios.co.uk/images/ms3.bmp
As you can see I dont have a .bak to choose so it comes up this. If I click ok and try and back it up, it says back up complete. However when I go in the folder there is no .bak file
I also read on the net that if there shared databases the hosts are the only ones who can back stuff up, I asked them and they said that I should be able to do it on ms sql studio express.
Hi all, I am trying to write a web page connected to an sql database of my MP3 files. I have a dropdown list box that populates with the artist, this hopefully being used to filter results into a datagrid. However, i am having a problem with the ddlb box repopulating on post back, i trawled the news groups and coded the population of the ddlb within an "if not page.postback" statement but to no avail. If i connect the ddlb to another sql database i have, the page reloads with the selctedvalue retained. So the theory is now that it is the SQL database, (is this a limitation of SQL express?) and i am having troubleshooting this. Here is the SQL of the databse: USE [mp3]GO/****** Object: Table [dbo].[Table_1] Script Date: 04/21/2008 20:40:21 ******/SET ANSI_NULLS ONGOSET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONGOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table_1]([Title] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL,[Artist] [nvarchar](50) NULL,[Album] [nvarchar](50) NULL,[Year] [nvarchar](25) NULL,[Comment] [nvarchar](500) NULL,[TrackNumber] [nvarchar](10) NULL,[path] [nvarchar](300) NOT NULL,[genre] [nvarchar](25) NULL,[id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,CONSTRAINT [PK_Table_1_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([id] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY] Any help much appreciated.
Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.
Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.
Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.
I'm attempting to use RDA to synchronize a pocket pc emulator with SQL Server 2005 database by following tutorial http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa454892.aspx, which uses AdvWorksMobile database that comes with SQL Server 2005.
When get to testing of "To test application features " ( step 4 of the merge replication setup lab ), I am receiving SQLCe Exception errors.
ORIGINALLY, I was able to deploy an application and view the local database on the emulator, but once I clicked "InitSinc" button, I received an error.
"Failure to connect to SQL Server with provided connection information. SQL Server does not" exist, access is denied because the SQL user is not a valid user on the SQL Server, or the password is incorrect. Found this error listed in Server Agent Errors log http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172357.aspx, but it wasn't very helpful since it doesn't provide any suggestions on fixing the problems.
I am brand new to SQL CE Server , mobile programming and .NET framework in general so please bare with me
All the connections / security settings, etc that were set up were taken from a tutorial so I am not sure what SQLCeServer is complaining about. Reading up on the error on the web didn't help, it all pointed to making sure that the snapshot folder had correct permissions set up. I verified that MACHINENAMEUISR_MACHINENAME guest user had Read rights to the database so I don't think that piece is the problem. Otherwise ,Merge publication has been setup in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio by following the tutorial.
I am trying to run this sync on my home pc so there should be no issues with any user permissions
I have IIS installed
I did NOT have SQL Server Agent running in management studio at this time
I am trying to run this tutorial on an XP machine, which is my regular home PC so I dont think there are any special networking settings to consider
I am able to hit http://localhost/AdvWorksMobile/sqlcesa30.dll from my pc OK, but when I try to hit it from a cradled emulator ( after replacing "localhost" with "MACHINE_NAME" ), Internet Explorer on the emulator gives me a "Cannot Connect With Current Settings" error message. This part wasn't part of tutorial but decided so not sure if I am supposed to be able to hit it from my emulator..so I am not sure if the fact that I can't hit it is related to the problem. AFTER STARTING SQL SERVER AGENTin Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, I killed the application, and after relaunching it, it hits "The Specified table does not exist [Vendor]" error. This time it doesn't even launch first - that is I dont even get to pressing "InitSinc" button. Debugger is showing that this error is hit on the following line in AdvWorksMobile.AddWorksDataSetTableAdapters
int returnValue = this.Adapter.Fill(dataTable);
I am not sure why the errors changed on me after starting SQL Server Agent. What can I do to fix this connection problem?
Hello,I'm trying to create a simple back up in the SQL Maintenance Plan that willmake a single back up copy of all database every night at 10 pm. I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Is there any way to create a back up file withoutthe date time stamp so it overwrites the previous nights file? Thanks!Rick
New to Database Mirroring and I have a question about the Principal database server. I have a Database Mirroring setup configured for High-safety with automatic fail over mode using a witness.
When a fail over occurs because of a lost of communication between the principal and mirror, the mirror server takes on theĀ roll of Principal. When communication is returned to the Principal server, at some point does the database that was the previous Principal database automatically go back to being the Principal server?
I need to run two reports each of A5 Size to run back to page and print on single A4 paper means in 1st half Sale bill will be printed and in second half Gate Pass Will Be Printed both report will be on same page and size and shape should be maintained. How to do it.
I would like to develop WAP using ASP.NET which can connect to the Database( MS SQL Server ). Is it possible to do it? I try to find the tutorial but I cannot find it.
Another thing I want to ask is can I connect the WAP to the web services that I create using ASP.NET, anyone can tell me how to do it.
I need to create a query that will pull all of the records that are statused as 'OUT' from my RECORDS table and then get the last (chronologically) 'OUT' record from my IN/OUT table for each record it pulled from RECORDS.
I can get the records out of RECORDS without any problems but I don't know how to set up a query that will pull the last chronological 'OUT' record from my IN/OUT table. Is there a way to do this in SQL?
company is developing a database system containing information about cities, towns, and villages in the country. The number of cities, towns, and villages are in thousands and the database program should allow users to search a particular place by name. Users should also be able to search all places that match a particular value or range of values for attributes such as location or population size. This particular feature is known as a range query.
If the database is meant to support range queries that can return many cities that match the query specification, the entire operation may be allowed to take longer. To meet this requirement, it will be necessary to support operations that process range queries efficiently by processing all cities in the range as a batch, rather than as a series of operations on individual cities.Different indexing methods can be used to perform this operation. What will be your choice if:
a) database is created once and has no change over a period of time
b) database is created once and database is changed over a period of time
Good Day;I would appreciate assistance developing a query that I haven't beenable to develop without using a second table. I wish to count thenumber of records that are still open on the first of each month. Each record has an open date and a close date or the close date isnull i.e., the record is not yet closed. I've previously beaten thisby building a table, simply a list of the dates for the first of eachmonth for the next ten years or so, and then selecting values basedupon a date selected from that table. However I'd be happier if Icould do it without the second table. I'd be prepared to accept theMin(Date) for each month as being the first of the month.I've included some DDL statements to build and populate the table ifthat helps. Since the selection is rather small and all the opendates are very close together I think the result will be simply adecreasing count from the month the first record is opened till today.A pseudo code select statement might look likeSelect Min(DateOpened) As DateOfInterest, Count(*) as [Qty Still Open]FROM DetailTWhere DateReceived > DateOfInterest or DateReceived is Null andDateOpened < DateOfInterestGroup by Min(DateOpened)Order by Min(DateOpened)I hope I've explained it sufficiently well.CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DetailT] ([Autonum] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[QDNumber] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[DateOpened] [smalldatetime] NOT NULL ,[DateReceived] [smalldatetime] NULL ,)Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('C15788', '06/04/2005 9:35', 07/04/2005)Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('B16091', '06/04/2005 9:36', '07/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('B15001', '06/04/2005 9:51', '08/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('M18696', '06/04/2005 9:56', '06/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('C14969', '06/04/2005 10:05', '10/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('O10091', '06/04/2005 10:08', '12/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('D01197', '06/04/2005 10:13')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('H15001', '06/04/2005 10:15', '08/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('J15090', '06/04/2005 10:24', '08/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('J01202', '06/04/2005 10:31')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('G01193', '06/04/2005 10:32')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('K01164', '06/04/2005 10:35')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('K01162', '06/04/2005 10:48')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('F01124', '06/04/2005 10:59')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('H01147', '06/04/2005 11:01')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('S15068', '06/04/2005 11:10')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('E12322', '06/04/2005 11:32', '07/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('A12205', '06/04/2005 11:37', '06/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened, DateReceived)VALUES('D12259', '06/04/2005 11:40', '07/04/2005')Insert into DetailT (QDNumber, DateOpened)VALUES('C03394', '06/04/2005 11:51')If you made it this far thank you for your patience. i'm making my master thesis about a new plug-in algorithm, with the LVQ Algorithm. I make the tutorial with the pair_wise_linear_regression algorithm and i have some doubts. i was searching for the code of the algorithm in the files of the tutorial and i didn't saw it. I have my new algorithm programmed in C++ ready to attach him, but i don't know where to put him, in which file i have to put him to start to define the COM interfaces? And in which file is the code of the pair_wise_linear_regression algorithm in the SRC paste of the tutorial?

Hello,I am hoping you can help me with the following problem; I need to process the following steps every couple of hours in order to keep our Sql 2000 database a small as possible (the transaction log is 5x bigger than the db).1.back-up the entire database2.truncate the log3.shrink the log4.back-up once again. As you may have determined, I am relatively new to managing a sql server database and while I have found multiple articles online about the topics I need to accomplish, I cannot find any actual examples that explain where I input the coded used to accomplish the above-mentioned steps. I do understand the theory behind the steps I just do not know how to accomplish them!If you know of a well-documented tutorial, please point me in the right direction.Regards.
I am developing a Translator for a mobile phone and I am using MS SQL server 2005 for creating my database.. I am having a problem in creating a relationship between my tables.. I have the following tables: English(engcode, engword) - engcode is primary key Esperanto (espcode, espword) - espcode is promary key EngEsp (engcode,espcode)..
The problem is that the icon "relationship" is disable in sql 2005 and i am nt able 2 create the relationship..
I am trying to write a program that creates packages on the fly depending on the variables you pass. for eg. It should create connection managers on the fly specific to a certain file in the variable (eg. sample.csv). the package has a dataflow task and it has flat file source and oledb destination. The problem I am facing is the flat file source when assigned to a flat file connection manager(dynamically), it is not giving any source output columns. i.e, the value for DFSource.OutputCollection(0).OutputColumnCollection.Count is Zero. But when I use the same code and reverse the source and destination(oledb as source and flatfile as destination), it is working fine. I searched everywhere for resources on how to develop packages programmatically, but could not find any except one example on msdn. If anyone knows about this prob or any useful resources on this subject, it would be really helpful.
