Development Servers, Auto-update Live Servers

Aug 21, 2001

can anyone tell me if they know of a way to automate the update process from development servers to live server, with little interference from an administrator

I have a development team that are constantly updating their databases along with their ASP code, and want to publish changes an a weekly basis. They have asked me for a way to take their new structures, tables, procedures etc, and copy them to the live servers, but NOT to interfere with existing customer data.

Funny I know – and I hate the idea btw :(

Any references, contacts, 3rd party tool recommendations welcome,

Thanx,

Darren

Live And Development Servers - Updates To Both

Mar 9, 2000

I have a problem in that I have a live SQL 7.0 server as a back end to a web server for a large company in Germany and of course we also have a development server locally which is more or less the same apart from data. The ASP developers here want to upload some data to the live server and also download live data from the live server so that we have more or less the same data on both systems.

I have thought about doing this with DTS adn writing SQL scripts to merge the tables and then upload back to the live server etc. but before I do I wondered if anyone had experience of doing this before (I am sure) and could either tell me what are the best methods or package to do or point me or mail me an article that covers this sort of thing.

Of course extreme paranioa creeps in at the thought of copying down large tables from the live server etc. etc. so if anyone can help - great!

How To Manage Development And Production Servers??

Jan 9, 2008

Hi everyone,

I really need your help!! How you manage development server and production server?

My current situation:
Our programmers develop new Stored Procedures on development server. When all testing is completed, we then deploy them to production server.

Challenges:
Programmer (Eric) modified a Stored Procedure (SP_1) on development server. He did not deploy it on production server because SP_1 is not completed yet.

Programmer (John) got request and needed to modify SP_1 on development server

So now there is a problem in SP_1. if John deploy SP_1 on production server, it will overwrite the current version and cause errors.

Anyone can solve this problem? Will it be better if we have another testing server?

many thanks

Datatype Problem: Development Vs Production Servers

Feb 25, 2006

This is driving me nuts: On my development machine the code runs fine
but generates an error on the production server. Both are running SQL
Server 2000 and ASP.NET 1.1

The datatype of the field in question is datetime.
The webform has a calendar for a user to select and automatically
insert the date into the textbox. The update command in the webform is:

 cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@citation_date", CDate(txtDate.Text))

This works without a hitch on my development system, but on the production server it generates the following error:
Cast from string "19-12-1997" to type 'Date' is not valid.

WHY?

Sql Report Works Fine On Internal Servers - Hosed On External Servers - Need Some Help

Nov 21, 2007

I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.

We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.

When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.

When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.

When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.

I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!

Linking SQL 2005 Servers To SQL 2000 Servers Problems

Sep 27, 2007

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.

1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.

Two of the errors I am encountering are:
------------------------------
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)
------------------------------
And
------------------------------
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB".
OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)

If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.

Thanks!

Trigger Update Between Servers

May 1, 2008

Hello All,

This is my first time posting here so thanks for you assistance in advance.

I have a project I am working on where I need to use database triggers to upon update update a table on another SQL server. Below is how it would work.

Server A (SQL 2000)
Table A is updated (execute trigger to update Server B, Table B)

Server B (SQL 2005)
Table B (Tabled updated by SQL 2000, server).

I don't know if this can be done using the SQL server technology itself or how I would do it. Is a .NET or other program service have to be used in this scenario?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Davy

Different UPDATE Behaviors Across Servers

Apr 24, 2007

Hi!I have a stored procedure that takes 22 minutes to run in oneenvironment, that only takes 1 sec or so to run in anotherenvironment. Here is the exact situation:Database 1 on Server 1 vs. Database 2 on Server 2 - the data isexactly the same, and the tables and index structures are exactly thesame. Implicit transactions are turned off on both databases.Stored procedure:BEGIN TRANSACTION--step 1TRUNCATE myTable--step 2INSERT INTO myTable VALUES ('myValues')--step 3UPDATE aSET rating=AVG(someValues)FROM myTable aJOIN otherTable bON a.column1=b.column1GROUP BY someColumnsCOMMIT TRANSACTIONThe update statement on the problem server is the only step that takesforever. While it is running, I don't see anything that could beblocking the statement. I used the following queries to determine ifthere was another process blocking it:select spid AS Blocked, blocked AS Blocking, waittime, cmd, substring(nt_username, 1, 15), dbid, physical_io,substring(hostname, 1, 15), program_name, lastwaittype, waitresource, memusagefrom master.dbo.sysprocesses where blocked <0order by waittime descselect dbid, name from sysdatabases where dbid in (select dbid frommaster.dbo.sysprocesses where blocked <0)select spid AS BlockingFromAbove, blocked AS TrueBlockingQuery, waittime, cmd, substring (nt_username, 1, 15), dbid, physical_io,substring(hostname, 1, 15), program_name, lastwaittype, waitresource, memusagefrom master.dbo.sysprocesses where spid in (select blocked frommaster.dbo.sysprocesses where blocked <0)order by waittime descWhen I change the UPDATE statement to a SELECT, it still takes longerthan it does on the test server (1 min 35 sec vs. severalmilliseconds). What could be causing the UPDATE to take forever on one server/database, and run without a problem on another?I am at a loss! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update Data On SQL2005 Linked Servers To DB2

Oct 25, 2007

Hi all.

I need your help.

I create a linked server on SQL 2005 server using IBMDA400 as provider.

I create a VBscript to update some data on DB2, and issue begin trans and commit trans. Kindly refer to below code.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set oKCDat = CreateObject("KCDAT.kcdatapi")
Set objConnection = oKCDat.OpenConnection_SQL(strDataSource,strDB, strUserID, strPassword)

Set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

strName = "TEST1"

strTemp1 = "2"
strTemp2 = "3"
intTemp1 = 199

strSQLStatement = "SELECT * FROM QS36F.TEST WHERE PRACNM = ''" & strName & "''"
strUpdSQL = "TEST1 = '" & strTemp1 & "', TEST2 = '" & strTemp2 & "', TEST3 = " & intTemp1

strSQL = "UPDATE OPENQUERY(TESTDB2," & "'" & strSQLStatement & "')" & " SET " & strUpdSQL & ";"

objConnection.BeginTrans

objConnection.Execute(strSQL)

objConnection.CommitTrans

objConnection.Close

Set rs = Nothing
Set oKCDat = Nothing
Set objConnection = Nothing

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When i run above script, it prompt me an error message;
"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
The requested operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "IBMDA400" for linked server "TESTDB2" does not support the required transaction interface."

If i run it without "begintrans" and "committrans", it update the data successfully.

Does anyone know about it?

Highly appreciated for above matters.

Website Using LINQ To SQL Development V Live

Feb 8, 2008

Hello,
I have my local development evrioment and my live webserver in colo. The two different machinces both have SQL2005 and copies of roughly the same database. I use the one for developement and the other obviously for production.  Currently I read in different connection strings from my web.config file for my live version v my development version so I can have different database names and connection strings.
I'm looking at moving to LINQ, but I can't figure out how I'd achive an equivelent flexibility as database names and connection strings seem to be hardcoded in to the class using it's designer.  Obviously if modifing this wasn't possible, nobody would be using LINQ, so how do I work around this?
 Thanks,

Combine Tables From 2 SQL Servers With Different Schemas And Update As New Data Is Entered

Mar 28, 2008

I have 2 SQL server 2000 machines, I need to take a table from each one and combine them together based on a date time stamp. The first machine has a database that records information based on an event it is given a timestamp the value of variable is stored and a few other fields are stored in Table A. The second machine Table B has test data entered in a lab scenario. This is a manufacturing facility so the Table A data is recorded by means of a third party software. Whenever a sample is taken in the plant the event for Table A is triggered and recorded in the table. The test data may be entered on that sample in Table B several hours later the lab technician records the time that the sample was taken in Table B but it is not exact to match with the timestamp in Table A. I need to combine each of these tables into a new SQL server 2005 database on a new machine. After combining the tables which I am assuming I can based on a query that looks at the timestamp on both Tables A & B and match the rows up based on the closest timestamp. I need to continuously update these tables with the new data as it comes in. I havent worked with SQL for a couple of years and have looked at several ways to complete this task but havent had much luck. I have researched linked servers, SSIS, etc Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Transferring Existing SSIS Packages Saved In A Shared Folder Location From Development Server To Live Server

Dec 20, 2007

Please can anybody help me in transferring existing SSIS Packages saved in a shared folder location from development server 2ED to Live server TWD1.
Both has SQL server 2005 running and has visual studio 2005
Currently about 25 SSIS packages are executed from the development server transferring data on Live server TWD1...these ETL process is called from development server but executed on live server.
Now the problem is when i call these packages from the shared folder from live server it crashes.....i need to changes something to shift the whole package to the live server..and execute on live server itself instead of recreating the whole 25 process from scratch.....also i use optimize for many tables ..and run in a single trancastion....so how can i see the mappings of source and destination tables.

Please let me know the process how i can achieve this.
Thanks

Keeping Live Server And Development Server In Sync

Aug 17, 2007

Hi,

Im fairly new to this so apologies if Ive put this in the wrong place.

I have just rented out server for a new asp.net site. Ive been developing the site on my local machine and the database in Sql Enterprise. Ive recently put a copy of the site on the live server and got everything configured.

However everytime I make a change to my local database, or add values into my look up tables I have to go do the same on the live server and its proving a bit of a pain in the ass, so Im guessing there has got to be a much smarter way of doing this. I dont want (if possible) to open up the live sql server to allow remote connections, but if thats what neccesary so be it.

So my question is basically what are my options for keeping my live server up to date with my development server. As I add new features on my local server, should i be saving sql scripts of all the changes I make?

All opinions much appreciated.

What Sp Are My Servers On?

Feb 22, 2006

Hi,

does anyone have a script that I can adapt to collect the status of all my servers please? I am managing 20+ servers, plus MSDE installs with various applications and its now a nightmare tracking each one. I am building a central database where information such as this can be referenced but i need to populate it and then updated it regularly, hopefully with a scheduled job and some nifty sp's.

any ideas how i can achieve it if the scripts are not already around? i use PRINT @@VERSION currently, can i execute this in a different format to assess a different server from the one running the process?

thanks

Servers Can't See Each Other

Jan 29, 2008

I have SQL Server 2005 running on my local computer (OS Windows 2000). I also have SLQ Server 2005 running on a server (64 bit OS Windows 2003)

I need to copy a table from a DB on my local server to a DB on the server.

On my local computer I can see and connect to the DB on the server. No problem.

But when I remote desktop to the server and try to connect to the server on my local computer I get the error:

Error has occurred trying to establish connection to the server… under default settings server does not allow remote connections…

Both servers are set to the default settings. What settings do I need to change so that I can connect to my local server from the other server?

No Servers Available

Aug 8, 2007

I've just downloaded and installed SQL Server 2005 Trial Edition in an HP 2660rx Itanium server. I can see from the Configuration Manager that there is a service running a database instance which I created during the installation but when I try to connect to the new database thru the SQL Server Management Studio it doesn't find any (when Database Engine is the selected server type) server names. In SSMS console only when I select Integration Services as the server type it detects the server name.

What could be wrong? In my server I just made a clean installation of Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server is the only software I have installed since that.

Any help availabe?

Sync DBs On Different Servers

Apr 18, 2005

I have two db instances on different SQL Servers. One is my test db and the other the prod. db. Each has two tables that hold lookUp values for the entire application. I would like to keep these tables in sync. in both dbs. The prod. db would be the master. I was trying to design a trigger to insert, update, or delete the appropriate records in the test db as they were added or deleted from the prod db.
I'm getting too many prefixes errors on the script when trying to reference the table on the test db using four part naming convention.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Do I need to set up a linked server to accomplish this functionality? If so, how do I setup security for a linked server?
Thanks in advance.

Sqlserver And Web Servers

Jan 24, 2006

need some help!
Im doing an asp.net project on my laptop. im using the web matrix and sql server. my laptop is on its last legs so i need to start using my PC in college.
Now here is where it gets complicated. Last year we had accces to a server in the college to run .net pages across the network. But there has always been some problem with that server so there was no way of connecting to sql server. At the moment i have heard that some students use an orion web server to connect their pages to an access database, which wont do me.
Here is my plan, im going to install sql server on my computer(could get in trouble though!). i just need a web server on my machine to test my pages out without having to go accross the network of the college.
Any ideas?
i have cassini but have never used it.
There is no IIS on the computer so that is out the window
