Difference Between Running MS SQL Server 2000 On A Desktop PC And A Server

Jul 20, 2005

Hi Everyone,

Apparently, I was being asked on a question, "Why don't we procure a
desktop PC to run MS SQL Server 2000 rather than a buying a server?".
From a Management point-of-view, buying a desktop PC is much cheaper
than a server. However, I just wanted to understand that is it a
viable solution given the database size is something around 200 GB?
Equipping with more memory, more storage and a more powerful CPU on a
desktop PC could really taking up the role to support the DBMS?

Besides this "sensitive" costing concerns, what will be others
difference in running the SQL Server 2000 on the two different
hardware architecture? For example, IO rate, reliability, RAID-1
support, performance, … etc.

(Note: The operating system is Microsoft Windows 2000 Enterprise
Edition)

Ambrose

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

Feb 17, 2004

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine

Feb 28, 2003

I have a few questions about the SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), sorry there are so many ..

1. Which software products does this come with ?
2. If I create a SQL Server Database and want to distribute it to clients, how do I actually do it with MDSE ?
3. If I need to "upgrade" my database at some point in the future (that may contain data at a client site) how would I go about getting all the data out - would I need to write an external app ?
4. What are it's pros and cons when compared to installing full SQL Server on a client site ?
5. I've heard that the preformance of an MSDE Database degrades severely after more than 5 concurrent connections, is this just due to the performance of the product or is it something to do with the licencing model ?
6. Is it possible to write applications in, say VB, to alter the database once it has been installed on client site e.g. modify/create tables, indexes, stored procedures ?

Thanks for any help in advance ..

SQL Server 2000 Desktop SBS 2003

Has anyone had trouble accessing SQL 2000 desktop install over the LAN on SBS 2003?
I cannot access my installation from the same domain, yet when I install it on a machine running something other than SBS 2003 there are no problems.
Everything seems shared correctly, and I have tried loggin on to the remote machine as Administrator with no success.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Huge Performance Difference When Running UDF In Workstation Vs Server

Dec 13, 2007

Hi,

I created a CLR UDF that returns a large number of rows, when I run it from my VPC (XP, SQL Server Developer Edition and 1GB Memory) it takes approx 2 min and 30 secs to start displaying the rows (Using Management Studio), when I run the same query in our development server (Win 2003, SQL Server Enterprise Edition, 8 GB Memory and 8 Processors) it takes more than 15 min to start displaying the results, does anybody have an idea why is this happening?

Thanks in advance

SQL Server 2014 :: Calculate Running Difference In Values Between Days?

Oct 13, 2015

I am trying to write a query to calculate the running difference between data on different dates. Below is what my table of data looks like. Basically I want to calculate the difference between the total_completed for each state and date.

DateStatesTotal_Completed
08/27/15CA 19,952
09/11/15CA 26,336
10/02/15CA 35,444
10/08/15CA 38,278
08/27/15CO2797
09/11/15CO3264
10/02/15CO4270
10/08/15CO4297

below is what I am trying to achieve:

DateStatesTotal_CompletedCompleted_Difference
08/27/15CA 19,952 0
09/11/15CA 26,336 6,384
10/02/15CA 35,444 9,108
10/08/15CA 38,278 2,834
08/27/15CO27970
09/11/15CO3264467
10/02/15CO42701,006
10/08/15CO429727

below is my code (I almost have what I need) I just can't figure out how show 0 as the completed_difference for the first Date for each state since there is no prior date to calculate against.

MRR_TOTALS_WEEK_OVER_WEEK AS
(
SELECT
T1.[Date]
,T1.States
,T2.Total_Completed
,ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY T1.States ORDER BY T1.States,T1.[Date]) AS ORDERING
FROM TOTAL_CHARTS T1

Query Performance Difference Between Sql Server 2005 And 2000

Aug 1, 2007

Hi,

I'm having an issue with a query I'm running on Sql Server 2005. It's a semi-complex query involving an in-line table function and several left outer joins which are joined on to the results of the function call. Two of the left outer joins are then qualified in a where clause of the form where table.Col is not null; the idea is that the final result set contains data that has no match in those two tables.

The problem revolves around a where clause in the function and the last left outer join (ie, one of the ones qualified with where not null). When I alter the where clause of the function to further restrict the result set the function returns, the query times shoots up from 1 second to roughly 2-3 minutes. Note that the time the function takes to complete is not affected. The difference in time is purely down to what the query does with the results the function provides. Also note that the change to the where clause provides a subset of the original data; it does not add any more data (it actually restricts the original resultset by roughly 1000 rows).

I can bring the query speed back down again by removing the last left outer join - this join takes one of the columns from the function, and joins it to a small table - 924 rows. So it appears that this particular join is the cause of the issue, but only when using the resultset generated from the modified function query.

Now, as the thread title alludes, Sql Server 2000 and 2005 handle this differently, or appear to. When I execute this same query on a Sql 2000 machine, there's no apparent time differences, and the data that is returned is as expected. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how I can fix it? I could simply return the larger resultset and use managed code to filter out the rows I don't want; however, I would like to get to the bottom of this, especially if it's going to effect future queries.

Cheers,

Chris

Running An Instance Of SQL Server 2000 In SQL Server 2005

I was planning on restoring a backup of my SQL Server 2000 db to SS 2005, but keep the SS 2000 configuration. The main reason for doing so is to maintain the DTS packages I have in SS 2000 because my understanding is that these are not easily duplicated in SS 2005 Integration Services.

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to connect to Desktop SQL Server 2000 from Windows mobile PC Emulator (VS 2005). I need a direct connection using connection string to SQL Server 2000 through local wireless network without IIS.

Bellow is the code that I use. After executing this code I get an error on line Conn.Open(). Error says SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
SQL is un and running, and I can log in using SA username from the desktop. Even if I chance IP for another SQL server in my connection string I still get the same error. There is no firewall of any kind running.

Dim connectionSTR As String = "Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=False;Server=192.168.0.202,1433;initial catalog=MyDB;user id=sa;password=;"

Dim Conn As SqlConnection

Conn = New SqlConnection(connectionSTR)

Conn.Open()

If Conn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
MessageBox.Show("Open")
End If

About my environment: SQL Server 2000 is running on Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. Application which I need to connect to SQL Server is in Visual Studio 2005. I execute the application in Windows Mobile PC Emulator and try to connect to SQL Server from emulator.

Your advice and help is very appreciated

Can we move theprimary data files for each db? Should we just create secondary datafiles on the big partitions for all the db's? Is there a method ofmoving all the data at once?Any ideas on how we should approach this?(ps we dont have control of the sqlserver its outsourced, so simplerthe better). Thanks,Jim

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...
