Differences Between MS SQL Server 2000 And 2005?

Firslty, my aplogies if this is documented elsewhere - I am a new user to SQL Team and not yet found everything! I hope someone here can help me...
In brief, I am making the foolish mistake of embarking on my third and final year of an MS(c) degree in forensic computing. For my final year project I am intending to study and document (for forensic computing purposes) the forensic capture and investigation of data from a MS SQL Server database.
However, my experience is mostly from MySQL! In other words, I know very little about the internal structure of MS SQL Server 2000 or 2005.
Which leads me to my question....
Can anyone point me in the direction of a technical pagedocumentpdf (whatever) that details what the core fundamental differences are between 2000 and 2005. I'm not talking about an MS publicity paper - no, I need a non-bias technical guide which states the differences as fact.
If the differences in 2005 are mostly just cosemtic (the GUI etc) then I'll study 2000 because lots is already known and documented about it it seems. However, if it's much more than that and the differences are specific to what I'm studying (the forensic capture) then I'll probably have to go with 2005 because that's what we will be encountering more of in the next few years and the differences will effect the investigator.

(BTW - Having looked at the description of 'Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000', it seems like it might be a good book for my project (if I do 2000). Would you guys agree?)

Hi,
I have a simple sql statement that used to work in SQL 2000 that isn't working in SQL 2005. The order by clause doesn't seem to have any effect on the result set. The sql statement is:
ALTER VIEW dbo.SELECT_PP_END
AS
SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT
PP_PERIOD_ID,
CONVERT(VARCHAR, PP_END_DATE, 101) AS PP
FROM dbo.PP_PERIODS
ORDER BY PP_END_DATE DESC
The period end date is appearing in ascinding order on sql server 2005 and in the correct order in sql 2000. Any idea? Thank you for your help

I just wanted to post a difference I found between SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 regarding UDPATE statements that are done on a join. I understand that if tables are designed correctly this won't be a problem. But, when you inherit a bad design, you are unfortunately stuck with it. Hopefully this will help ease data differences in your migration from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.
Run this code on a SQL 2000 connection, then run on SQL 2005. My guess on the behavior difference is strictly performance based since 2005 pulls the top result. Either way it can cause a lot of head scratching if you're not aware of it.

The view works in SQL2K. When I try to run it under SQL2K5, I get a "The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value." error. I know what the error is, the SAM.PublicationDate field has NULL values in it (and this is vendor supplied data that is updated frequently, so not dealing with NULL values isn't an option), so during the CAST function it's try to CAST NULL + /01/ + NULL into a DATETIME value and crashing.
My question is why this works in SQL2K and not SQL2K5?

We have developed a mobile system that uses merge replication for SQL Mobile to SQL 2005. Previously we have developed mutliple mobile systems using merge replication for SQL Ce to SQL 2000.
Based on the knowledge we had gathered over about 4 years, we applied the synchronisation parameters for the SQL 2005 solution as we would for the SQL 2000 solution.
We have found there are some differences. Not too surprising I suppose, only some of these have us a little baffled.
For instance, there was a little flag called keep_partition_changes in SQL 2000 that is supposedly superceded by the use_partition_groups flag. However, if you don't set up your filtering to conform to the standards required by the use_pre_computed_partitions flag if you want it set to true, then the use_partition_groups flag gets set to false - also the @partition_options falg gets set back to 0 (static or non-unique data) when we want it at 3 (Single Parition, One subscriber).
To top it all off, when you get the use_partition_groups flag working, there are restrictions on which columns you can update on the device. WTF? This seems ludicrous, to be unable to update data at the subscriber - particularly information that allows you to effectively "delete" data from your subscription.
Examples of the current behaviour are as follows,
On initialize for a subscriber, the subscriber will receive their own data as inserts, plus exact multiples of that data as updates. Say there are 100 rows in TableA, the subscriber gets 100 inserts, plus 6000 updates. TableB has 20 rows, the subscriber gets 20 inserts, 1200 updates.
Further to this, performance goes out the window when synchronising changes. Typically the data flow will be between 5 and 200 changes in both directions for a synchronisation. We are seeing sync times in the replication monitor of over 20 seconds per user. Surely the calculations do not take that long. The tables in the database are not very large.
This behaviour gets significantly worse as we load the system. The application has an auto sync function which is timed to operate evry 10 minutes. However, now that there is in excess of 50 or so users on the system, those synchronisation times blow out to multiple minutes and the server starts to thrash. We have looked at indexing and maintenance but to no avail.
Everything still points to the merge replication setup.
So, it seems obvious to me that we are mising some key information about how to set up merge replication in SQL 2005. We woudl be very gratefull if someone could point out the errors of our ways.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some NON-sales documentation on the differences between these product? I am sure, especially with Express, there are considerable functionality and architecture differences.
I've looked in BOL, and I've done searches online.
All i seem to get is sales related stuff.
I'm curious about the architecture of SQL 2005, SQL express. In 2000, there was some fairly detailed documentaiton on this subject, but 2005 BOL seems REALLY diffucult to find things.
I may just need to try different keywords...

Hey all,
I have a VB6 app. If i run it against one SQL server - its fine. Another SQL 2000 server - it fails.
Here is the code

The error is
Run time error 3021
Either EOF or BOF is true, or the current recordset has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.
They are both on Windows 2000 servers. I have checked SQL versions with @@version and
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
Both identical.
The i used components checker to check MDAC versions - both 2.8. Also then checked the related MDAC Dlls. All identical.
Only thing i am having real trouble checking is the "Server Network Utility" - which on the server that works (?) is giving me an error of 126 "the specified module could not be found". Any idea what could be causing this?
What else could be different? Any ideas?

I have new bought the SQL server 2005 enterprise, but it have 2 CDs, so what are the differences between CD1 and CD2? and so which one should i install first? or is it necessary to install both two or just need to install one of them?
And about my original sql 2000 database, can i just attach it's MDF file into the sql 2005 engine, or which import wizard can load the sql 2000 MDF into sql 2005? or do i need to keep the sql 2000 engine before do this?

Hi Guru's,
I am kind of baffeled. I have a table with a column of 8 varchar in 2000
and the same in 6.5. When I insert into 2000 with a data length of more than 8 chars via Cold Fusion into the table, it fails. The same Cold Fusion
program inserts into the 6.5 table, but truncates the data but does not fail.
Does anyone know why this happens. Thanks, Newbie.

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?
Please help us.

I'm a SQL n000b, and have just joined the forum 5 minutes ago seeking an answer to this problem that I've encountered. It seems that the way connection strings are handled in SQL 2005 have changed. This connection string used to work, but is now borked:
<add key="DBNAME.ConnectionString" value="packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source='sqlvirdev0035dev35';persist security info=False;initial catalog=DBNAME;connection timeout=60" />
Has something explicitly changed in SQL 2005 that would break this <add key>? Does something need to be set server side in order to handle these connection strings now? I have no idea why this won't work anymore, I just know that it doesn't work.

Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

Hello,I've got installed Win 2003 SBS Premium with the SQL Server 2000 on a servermachine. It works almost fine, except the application which uses the SQLServer. The main part of the application runs (since the last update) fine,but other tools of that application (database import and the databasemanager for check and rebuild) doesn't. I have several SQL 2000 servers I need to setup transactional (non updatable) replication with. The structure is:
SQL Server 2000 as Publisher/Distributor
SQL Server 2005 Standard as Subscriber
The connection is via the Internet with snapshots using FTP.
I setup the first set (2 databases at location A). They work wonderfully. I created the publication and then subscribed using MGMT Studio for 2K5.
II am setting up the same scenario for location B. Here is my problem:
In MGMT Studio I connect to the publisher (SANDRA). I right-click a publication and choose New Subscriptions..., the publication is already selected. I click next - Run each agent at its Subscriber is selected and the only option (this is desired), I click Next
HERE IS THE PROBLEM:
On the Subscriber's screen there are no Subscribers listed. When setting up location A the subscribing server was listed and I could choose a database. The Next button is greyed out and there is no way to create/add one.
I tried setting up the subscription by right-clicking the subcribing server's Replication folder in MGMT Studio but I get the same result (except that I have to authenticate with the publishing server which works fine).
WHAT'S DIFFERENT:
Location A is SQL Server Standard (SP3) running on SBS2K3. It is obviously on a domain and so SQL Server and the SQL Agent are running under domain accounts. Location B is a Windows XP SP2 machine running SQL Server Personal Edition (it actually says Development Edition in the properties window).
The databases are the same strucutre, different data. At location A the firewall is set to allow 1433->*any* and *any*->1433 where *any* is 1024 or higher. On the XP machine the firewall is set to allow port 1433. I don't think this is the issue because I've turned the firewall off on the XP machine and I get the same result.
ANY IDEAS?

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to connect to Desktop SQL Server 2000 from Windows mobile PC Emulator (VS 2005). I need a direct connection using connection string to SQL Server 2000 through local wireless network without IIS.
Bellow is the code that I use. After executing this code I get an error on line Conn.Open(). Error says SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
SQL is un and running, and I can log in using SA username from the desktop. Even if I chance IP for another SQL server in my connection string I still get the same error. There is no firewall of any kind running.

It's because you're relying on an implicit conversion from a string to a decimal data type which SQL server will do to 2 decimal places by default...
Alright:
SELECT ROUND (CONVERT(DECIMAL(3,2),'6.465'),2) --- result 6.47 Now please explain this:
SELECT ROUND('0.285',2) -- 0.28
SELECT ROUND(0.285,2) -- 0.29
SELECT ROUND (CONVERT(DECIMAL(3,2),'0.285'),2) --- result 0.29 The string value does not seem to be converted to decimal with 2 decimal places.
MS is on the safe side with mentioning the last digit is always an estimate But because the result of the estimate is always the same, I would like to know:
* how is a string value exactly implicitly converted?
* how exactly does the estimation work, that in case of doubt rounds a value up or off?

When adding an SSIS step to a SQL Server Agent job, when selecting the location of a config file, the dialog lets you select from the database server you're working with. If selecting the location of the package itself (when the source is File System), the dialog lets you select from the machine where Management Studio is sitting instead of from the database server. Is that intentional? And if so, why? Should I just use a fully qualified file name for the package location rather than one using a drive letter?

When I try to migrate a database on a SQL Server 2000 server to a SQL Server 2005 server with the Copy Database Wizard of the SQL Server Management Studio, I'm confronted with the following problem;
Performing operation...
- Add log for package (Success)
- Add task for transferring database objects (Success)
- Create package (Success)
- Start SQL Server Agent Job (Success)
- Execute SQL Server Agent Job (Error)
Messages

When I take a look at 'Event viewer' on the SQL 2005 server, the following error is displayed;
InnerException-->An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005,
this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I already enabled the MSSQLSERVER network configuration protocols (TCP/IP and Named Pipes ).
How do I solve this problem?

My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

Hi Guys,
I have had SQL Server Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express installed on my machine for some time and recently tried to install a trial of SQL Server 2005 as well. (Yes, I'm migrating from Visual Studio Express to Visual Studio Professional, just as in tended!)
Everything went fine except that nothing seemed to be installed. I searched in all the obvious places - both on the Start/Programs menu and on the hard-drive: nothing.
A check under Add/Remove Programs showed that Sql Server 2005 Express was installed, but called SQL Server 2005.
So after a number of retries in which the install program kept saying that there was nothing to install, I selected every option under Advanced in the intall process. This resulted in stuff being installed and I now have SQL Server 2005 running on my machine, but no SQL Server Manager icon.
My questions are:
Where can I find the SQL Server Manager executeable?
Has anyone installed SQL Server Express, SQL Server Mangement Studio Express, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio on a single machine successfully? If so, what order did you install them in? (I'm planning on uninstalling everything SXQL Server related and starting again.)

I have created a linked server from SQL Server 2005 (SP 1) to SQL Service 2000 (SP 4) with a sql server login that is available on both servers but with different passwords and permissions.
I am getting the following error while accessing the linked server in management studio based on the scenario given below ;

Now this login abc has sysadmin rights on sql server 2005.
The same login abc has only db_datareader rights on sql server 2000 on just one database and is not associated with any fixed server role.
I have configured the linked server using the following options;
1. I have tried impersonating login from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 .
2. I have also tried specifying remote login / password option.
Anyone having any idea, would be of great help.
