Power Pivot :: Converting Text String To Numeric Value

Jun 11, 2015

I have a column that I'm trying to call into a calculated measure to determine an expected contract amount (Terms in Month). The problem is that some of the terms are defined as text strings (MTM, Coterminous, One-time) while others are numbers (12, 36, etc). The entire column is recognized as text. I have a numeric value that management has agreed would be an acceptable substitution (MTM=1, Coterminous=6) and so on. I can't however, figure out how to convert those texts to a number since they are different data types. I've tried a nested IF statement, as well as a LOOKUPVALUE..I'm doing this in Power Pivot, so am limited to DAX formulas

SQL 2012 :: Picking Number String Out Of Text String

Jul 14, 2015

I have a text field which has entries of variable length of the form:

"house:app.apx&resultid=1234,clientip"
or
"tost:app.apx&resultid=123,clientip"
or
"airplane:app.apx&resultid=123489,clientip"

I'm trying to pick out the numbers between resultid='...',clientip no matter what the rest of the string looks like. So in this example it would be the numbers:

1234
123
12389

the part of the string of the form resultid='...',clientip always stays the same except the length of the number can vary.

Data Conversion - Numeric To String Loosing Precision

Oct 26, 2006

Hi All,

i'm using a "data conversion" object to convert a numeric field to a string just before i save the record set to the database.

the problem is when this numeric field is > 0 it looses the precision on its decimal value.

example, if numeric value is 0.32

after converting this to a string, the new value will be : .32

it's lost the 0 infront of it. i can't do this converion in the query level because it's a derived field, so i need to convert it to a string before stroing it.

when converting to string i'm using the code page 1252 (ANSI - Latin I). i also tried with unicode string both looses this 0 infront.

can any one help on this?

Excel Source Numeric/string Data Problem

Oct 26, 2006

i've been reading some problems with excel source data being force as
numeric type when there are string/numeric type in the data, but adding
IMEX=1 to the extended properties will fix this problem...this is true
but not in my case...

say my excel file have about 40 rows..if row 1-39 in column A are all
NULL and row 40 has a string in it, the string in row 40 will not be
converted and the excel source is forcing this column A data type to be
numeric..having IMEX=1 in there does not work..however..if i add a
string anywhere in row 1-8 in column A, the the string in row 40 will
be converted because the external data type now is a string..

anyone know how to solve this problem?

Adding Numeric Data To A Dataflow In A Scriptcomponent-&&> Invalid Number In OLE Db Command Transformation

Jun 9, 2006

Hi there,

This seems a bug to me. Or does anyone has a logical explanation that escapes me?

When in SSIS Designer Version 9.00.1399.00 I add output columns (numeric 4,0 ) to a scriptcomponent and fill them with valid numeric data in thescript I get a database error 'invalid number' when I use these columns in an OLE db Command-transformation . This errormessage disappears when I replaces those columns by a dataconversion to the datatype they originally have.

Derived Column Name Derived Column Expression

STATUS_DEF Replace 'STATUS_DEF' (DT_NUMERIC,4,0)STATUS_DEF

Maybethis info is usefull for somebody else who can't figure out wathever he's doing wrong.

Uploading Text And Numeric Data From An Excel File

Nov 3, 2006

Hi,

I have found a problem with my SSIS package. The package takes a Excel File using the Excel Source/Excel connection manager objects. There's a Data Conversion Object which sets all the fields to be DT_STR and then I import the data into a Holding table using a OLEDB Destination Object.

My Excel file contains a list of Code/Description pairs. The problem I have is that I can have data such as the following

CODE

A101

A102

A103

12

1.2i

What seems to be happening is that when the data is imported into the holding table and the first rows are Alphanumeric then the fields where there's a code such as 12 get converted to NULL for some reason. If all the codes are the same type (either Alphanumeric or numericit doesn't matter, as long as they are all the same) the import works perfectly well.

I need to be able to import all of these codes without SSIS converting some to NULL. Has anyone come across this problem before? If so, is there something I am doing wrong or a workaround?

Many thanks in advance

Rob

I have a report where I have to display State, Category Name and the text. Below is the sample report

State Category Name Text

TX Unanticipated High NT due to RADD clean up- drive replacement.

NJ Unanticipated SAR efforts (SEM configuration)

But now my question is if there is no comment in any other state I would like to show no comment in the text line. Is there any formula I can use in the report level that will take care of the issue. I know in Business object there is a formula you can create which is =If (IsNull([Text]);"No Comments Reported";[Text]). I need to know in ssrs there is something.

please let me know ASAP and the steps of doing that.

SQL Insert From Text Box Works, But Can't Display Data After

Jan 4, 2008

Ok so I got my insert statement to work properly from multiple text boxes and a button control.  What I'm looking to do is once the customer hits the button and it creates the new row in the table I want to then display the recently created record.  Currently when I hit submit it creates the record, but the screen then goes back to default.  I can then go to another page that I created to browse the records and it sees that the record was created properly.  I would like for the insert to complete and then for the recently created record to be displayed either with a pop up, on the same page, or on a different page that needs to be created.  I've tried tons of different options, but haven't been able to figure it out.  So what I'll do is show you the working code and if you could give me a little help on what code I need to add to accomplish the task.  Thanks.   <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server">    <b />    <table style="width:100%;">        <tr>            <td class="style9">                Enter Bug Title:</td>            <td>    <asp:textbox id="bug_title" runat="server" Width="420px" EnableViewState="False"/>                                </td>        </tr>        <tr>            <td class="style9">                Bug Tester:</td>            <td>                <asp:TextBox ID="tester" runat="server" width="420px" EnableViewState="False"/></td>        </tr>        <tr>            <td class="style12">                Description:</td>            <td class="style13">                <asp:TextBox ID="description" runat="server" Width="420px" Height="473px"                     EnableViewState="False" MaxLength="200" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox>                                </td>        </tr>        <tr>            <td class="style9">                Severity:</td>            <td>                <asp:DropDownList ID="severity" runat="server" EnableViewState="False">                    <asp:ListItem>Low</asp:ListItem>                    <asp:ListItem>Medium</asp:ListItem>                    <asp:ListItem>High</asp:ListItem>                </asp:DropDownList>            </td>        </tr>        <tr>            <td class="style9">                Project Group:</td>            <td>                <asp:DropDownList ID="project_group" runat="server"                     DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1" DataTextField="GroupName"                     DataValueField="GroupName" EnableViewState="False">                </asp:DropDownList>                <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server"                     OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" SelectMethod="GetData"                     TypeName="DataSet1TableAdapters.bug_groupsTableAdapter">                </asp:ObjectDataSource>            </td>        </tr>        <tr>            <td class="style9">                &nbsp;</td>            <td>                <asp:button ID="button1" runat="server" text="Submit" OnclientClick="button1_click" />&nbsp;</td>        </tr>    </table> And here is the code behind: Imports System.DataImports System.Data.SqlClientPartial Class Default2    Inherits System.Web.UI.Page    Dim objcon As ConnectionStringSettings = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("bug_trackerConnectionString")    Dim str As String = objcon.ConnectionString    Dim con As New SqlConnection(Str)    Dim com As New SqlCommand("", con)    Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles button1.Click        con.Open()        com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@bug_title", bug_title.Text)        com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@tester", tester.Text)        com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@description", description.Text)        com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@project_group", project_group.Text)        com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@severity", severity.Text)        com.CommandText = "INSERT INTO bug_tracker (bug_title, tester, description, severity, project_group) VALUES (@bug_title, @tester, @description, @severity, @project_group)"        com.ExecuteNonQuery()        con.Close()    End Sub

Pattern Matching - Searching For Numeric Or Alpha Or Alpha-Numeric Characters In A String

Aug 18, 2006

Hi,

I was trying to find numeric characters in a field of nvarchar. I looked this up in HELP.

Wildcard
Meaning

%

Any string of zero or more characters.

_

Any single character.

[ ]

Any single character within the specified range (for example, [a-f]) or set (for example, [abcdef]).

Any single character not within the specified range (for example, [^a - f]) or set (for example, [^abcdef]).

Nowhere in the examples below it in Help was it explicitly detailed that a user could do this.

In MS Access the # can be substituted for any numeric character such that I could do a WHERE clause:

WHERE
Gift_Date NOT LIKE "####*"

After looking at the above for the [ ] wildcard, it became clear that I could subsitute [0-9] for #:

WHERE
Gift_Date NOT LIKE '[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]%'

using single quotes and the % wildcard instead of Access' double quotes and * wildcard.

Just putting this out there for anybody else that is new to SQL, like me.

Regards,

Patrick Briggs,
Pasadena, CA

Need Help Removing String Data From Text

Apr 4, 2008

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to use an SQL Function to remove everything from the mess of characters below except 'Test.' Really, any message could be substituted, so it's not as easy to leave everything except the 'Test.' string.

{
tf1ansiansicpg1252deff0deflang1033{fonttbl{f0fnilfcharset0 MS Shell Dlg 2;}{f1fnil MS Shell Dlg 2;}}
{colortbl ;
ed0green0lue0;}
{*generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}viewkind4uc1pard x720cf1f0fs20 Test.f1par
}

It's RichText.

The fs20 could be fs24, fs25, etc. (any numbers). The end of the number would be the point to trim the beginning off.

The '' seems like it would be the point to start trimming the end off.

I've been experimenting with SUBSTRING together with CHARINDEX, but am just not getting even close to coming up with a solution.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you.

Text Data To XML To String Via Script Transformation

Oct 4, 2007

I am trying to load a SQL 2005 table which contains an XML data type using SSIS. The source is a text data file which is driven by a record-type (ie. 01 = course; 02 = conference) that will be used to determine the format of the XML. Being not too familiar with XML, I am struggling with the proper way to generate the XML which I can output to a string column.

Do I use xmlTextWriter for this or someother method?

Is there a way to output the formatted Xml as a string column from my Script Transformation? Should I be using a stream data column?

Are there any good examples that I can refer to? As you can probably tell I am clueless how to handle the XML. Can I even move the xml result to a string???

Any help would be appreciated.

Contact Form - Variable Number Of Input Fields, Store Data As Xml String ?

Jul 13, 2007

Im trying to determine the best way to store data gathered from a form that a user will fill out online.  The form is dynamic and is customized at run time based on group-specific criteria.  The end result is a form that might have 3 extra text boxes, 2 extra sets of radio buttons and a freeform textbox, whereas for another group, there might be a slightly different set of input fields.   Now comes the issue of storing this data.  Since the fields can be somewhat dynamic, it could get tricky to define table columns for each possible input field.  So Im considering storing the data as xml.  Has anyone else had to build custom forms and ended up storing the data as xml ?

Converting Text To Numeric

Jul 23, 2004

I have a database table with 2 numeric fields. The values to be inserted into these fields come from text boxes in an ASP.NET page. So in the parameters to add into these fields I simply use 'textbox1.text' & textbox2.text'.

One of the fields accepts the data within the text box and adds it into the appropriate numeric data field in the table. However on the other text box I get an error message 'Error converting data type nvarchar to numeric.'

Does anyone know why this occurs just on the one entry and not the other?, and if anyone has any suggestions on how to get around this please let me know.

Many Thanks
