Displaying Result From Dynamic SQL
Jan 3, 2008
I have a SP that returns a different dataset based on different id(parameter).
So that I can NOT get fields in the Report Builder.
Is there a way to have a "generic" Report that displays whatever it gets from the SP.
In a simple "table" format.
If not, could you, please, get me some suggestions how to address this problem.
One idea that I have in mind is to create Report Definitions dynamically...
I'd rather not to go there.. but..
Thank you very much!

Hi,
Running into a quirk with creating a new dataset in RS 2005.
The dataset is based on a SQL proc, which I can identify and execute in the Data tab page and see the correct results when matched against the same params in SQL Studio.
However, the DataSets window only lists a single field call "ID" under my available fields listing, even though I can see all the correct fields in the pane right next to.
The structure of the sProc is similar to many that I have create reports on previously.
Any suggestions would be helpful....
Sincerely,

Ihave 2 tables...they are basically the same except for the column name in one of them because they deal with 2 different names, though..the data i want is in columns that have the same name.pretty much what i want to do...is .they also need to be distinct so i dont count duplicates...i can get them as separate tables...but i cant get them together..I need them in 1 column because of how it is sent to the C3 code page and how it reads it...the structure has already been previously set..and there are about 5 other statments that are being executed in this one stored procedure like this (also i wasnt the one who set this up).
image 1 is what is currently set up
imgur: the simple image sharer
top part is what is stored in tables..bottom is more of the result
it basically runs this code to get the bottom
DECLARE @id INT;
DECLARE @invest nvarchar(50);
SET @id = '7633';
SET @invest = '';
SELECT 'a' + CONVERT(nvarchar, orderfindings.risk_rating) AS cat, COUNT(DISTINCT orderfindings.prnt_id) AS stat
FROM orderheader, orderaudits, orderfindings
WHERE orderheader.id = orderaudits.orderheader_id AND orderaudits.ID = orderfindings.prnt_id
AND orderheader.id = @id AND orderfindings.risk_rating > 0 AND orderaudits.Investor_Name LIKE '%' + @invest + '%'
GROUP BY orderfindings.risk_rating
If i want agencies instead of findings..just replace it..agencies and findings are the 2 tables..they are the pretty much identical column wise...but i want the result together..i've tried several ways..but i cant seem to get it.
image 2 - the table at the bottom is more what i'm looking for..it combines them both into 1
imgur: the simple image sharer
if an order has a finding or agency or both in it..then it gets marked as a 1 for that risk rating...if it doesnt..then 0 for that risk rating..and then sum them all up to see what i got..
I've been working with it...did this [SQL] compare2 - Pastebin.com ..got it to display 2 columns..but still not the right result...i'm getting a1 = 1...a2 = 1...so its not running through all the orders...or it needs a way to count it...i put a sum at beginning of case statement..erro because of counts...so i took counts out...

How can I make this stored procedure concept work:
-----------------------------------------------
Create Procedure MyProc @MyValue varchar(5)
As
Declare @ColumnName as varchar(11)
Set @ColumnName = 'Price_' + @MyValue
Select Sum(Price) As @ColumnName --????
From MyTable where Item = @MyValue
Return
-----------------------------------------------
Using @MyValue = 23 should make the Sum(Price) column name 'Price_23'. It's not working. What am I doing wrong?

im running a dynamic query with open rowset in it
pseudocode:
@CMD=declare @ RETURN SELECT @RETURN =SUM(X) FROM OPENROWSET(....) SELECT @RETURN
EXEC @CMD
This pseudocode dipplay the result of @return
the problem:
capture @return into @myvalue outside the dynamic sql scope
something like
Select @myvalue=exec(@cmd)
I don't wanna run on ditributed transaction like this
insert mytable
exec(@cmd)

Created a stored procedure which returns Selected table from database.
I pass variables, according to conditions
For some reason it is not returning any result for any condition
Stored Procedure
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.StoredProcedure
(
@condition varchar(20),
@ID bigint,
@date1 as datetime,
@date2 as datetime
)
AS
/* SET NOCOUNT ON */
IF @condition LIKE 'all'
SELECT CllientEventDetails.*
FROM CllientEventDetails
WHERE (ClientID = @ID)
IF @condition LIKE 'current_events'
SELECT ClientEventDetails.*
FROM ClientEventDetails
WHERE (ClientID = @ID) AND
(EventFrom <= ISNULL(@date1, EventFrom)) AND
(EventTill >= ISNULL(@date1, EventTill))
IF @condition LIKE 'past_events'
SELECT ClientEventDetails.*
FROM ClientEventDetails
WHERE (ClientID = @ID) AND
(EventTill <= ISNULL(@date1, EventTill))
IF @condition LIKE 'upcoming_events'
SELECT ClientEventDetails.*
FROM ClientEventDetails
WHERE (ClientID = @ID) AND
(EventFrom >= ISNULL(@date1, EventFrom))
IF @condition LIKE ''
SELECT CllientEventDetails.*
FROM CllientEventDetails
RETURN
Also I would like to find out if I can put only "where" clause in if condition as my select statements are constants

Hi:
Is there a way to assign a dynamic query result to a local variable?
declre @sqlString nvarchar(4000),
@minEventDate datetime,
@databaseName varchar(25)
selct @databaseName = 'customer_12345'
(actually, a cursor loop will assign the database name dynamically, here just to simplify the situation)
select @sqlString =
'select ' + @minEventDate + '= (select min(eventDate) from ' + @databaseName + '.dbo.tblABC)'
exec sql_executesql @sqlString
print '@minEventDate: ' + cast(@minEventDate as varchar(19))
Though the select min(eventDate) from customer_12345.dbo.tblABC
returns a date, ex. '02/01/2004 12:35 pm', however, the printed @minEventDate is always with Null value. It mean, the value was never correctly assigned to the local variable.
As an alternate way, I am using temp table to insert it with the query result and then assign to the local variable. Since I have many local variables to try to get the min, max, count for around 10 fields, perfer a way to direct assign to the local variable instead of 10 temp tables.
thanks

Hello all:
Here is a sample query:
DECLARE @KEYID NVARCHAR (50) ; SET @KEYID = '1074958'
DECLARE @ENTITY NVARCHAR (100); SET @ENTITY = 'HouseDimension'
DECLARE @KeyCol NVARCHAR(50);
SET @KeyCol = (SELECT LEFT(@ENTITY, (SELECT CHARINDEX( 'DIM', @ENTITY) -1)) )+ 'Key'
DECLARE @KeyValue NVARCHAR (1000)
SET @KeyValue = 'SELECT '+ @KeyCol + ' FROM HouseManagementFact WHERE HouseKey = ' + @KEYID +
' GROUP BY ' + @KeyCol + ' HAVING SUM(TotalClaimCount) > 0 OR SUM(HouseCount) > 0 '
The value resulting from Executing @KeyValue is an integer.
I want to store this value in a new variable say @VAR2
When I do this
DECLARE @VAR2 INT
SET @VAR2 = execute sp_executesql @KeyValue
its giving me an error.
can somebody let me know the correct form of storing the value resulting from @KeyValue in some variable ?

I need to send the result of a procedure to an update statement.Basically updating the column of one table with the result of aquery in a stored procedure. It only returns one value, if it didnt Icould see why it would not work, but it only returns a count.Lets say I have a sproc like so:create proc sp_countclients@datecreated datetimeasset nocount onselect count(clientid) as countfrom clientstablewhere datecreated > @datecreatedThen, I want to update another table with that value:Declare @dc datetimeset @dc = '2003-09-30'update anothertableset ClientCount = (exec sp_countclients @dc) -- this line errorswhere id_ = @@identityOR, I could try this, but still gives me error:declare @c intset @c = exec sp_countclients @dcWhat should I do?Thanks in advance!Greg

As the topic suggests I need the end results to show a list of shows and their dates ordered by date DESC.
Tables I have are structured as follows:
SHOWS
showID
showTitle
SHOWACCESS
showID
remoteID
VIDEOS
videoDate
showID
SQL is as follows:
SELECT shows.showID AS showID, shows.showTitle AS showTitle,
(SELECT MAX(videos.videoFilmDate) AS vidDate FROM videos WHERE videos.showID = shows.showID)
FROM shows, showAccess
WHERE shows.showID = showAccess.showID
AND showAccess.remoteID=21
ORDER BY vidDate DESC;
I had it ordering by showTitle and it worked fine, but I need it to order by vidDate.
Can anyone shed some light on where I am going wrong?

I am trying to code a WHERE xxxx IN ('aaa','bbb','ccc') requirement but it the return values for the IN keyword changes according to another column, thus the need for a CASE function.
WHERE GROUP.GROUP_ID = 2 AND DEPT.DEPT_ID = 'D' AND WORK_TYPE_ID IN ( CASE DEPT_ID WHEN 'D' THEN 'A','B','C' <---- ERROR WHEN 'F' THEN 'C','D ELSE 'A','B','C','D' END )
I kept on getting errors, like
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 44Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'WHERE'.
which leads me to assume that the CASE ... WHEN ... THEN statement does not allow mutiple values for result expression. Is there a way to get the SQL above to work or code the same logic in a different manner in just one simple SQL, and not a procedure or T-SQL script.

I'm using a subquery to return a delivery charge line as a column in the result set. I want to see this delivery charge only on the first line of the results for each contract. Code and results are below.
declare @start smalldatetime
declare @end smalldatetime
set @start = '2015-03-22 00:00' -- this should be a Sunday
set @end = '2015-03-28 23:59' -- this should be the following Saturday
select di.dticket [Contract], di.ddate [Delivered], di.item [Fleet_No], di.descr [Description], dd.min_chg [Delivery_Chg], dd.last_invc_date [Delivery_Invoiced],
[code]....
In this example, I only want to see the delivery charge of 125.00 for the first line of contract HU004377. For simplicity I have only shown the lines for 1 contract here, but there would normally be many different contracts with varying numbers of lines, and I only want to see the delivery charge once for each contract.

I used to do this with classic asp but I'm not sure how to do it with .net.Basically I would take a table of Categories, Then I would loop through those. Within each loop I would call another stored procedure to get each item in that Category. I'll try to explain, Lets say category 2 has a player Reggie Bush and a player Drew Brees, and category 5 has Michael Vick, but the other categories have no items.Just for an example.. Category Table: ID Category1 Saints2 Falcons3 Bucaneers4 Chargers5 FalconsPlayer Table:ID CategoryID Player News Player Last Updated1 1 Reggie Bush Poetry in motion 9/21/20062 1 Drew Brees What shoulder injury? 9/18/20063 5 Michael Vick Break a leg, seriously. 9/20/2006 Basically I would need to display on a page:SaintsReggie BushPoetry in MotionFalconsMichael VickBreak a leg, seriously.So that the Drew Brees update doesnt display, only the Reggie Bush one, which is the latest.I have my stored procedures put together to do this. I just don't know how to loop through and display it on a page. Right now I have two datareaders in the code behind but ideally something like this, I would think the code would go on the page itself, around the html.

Hi Craig/Kamal,
I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.
Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.
We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.
I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.
Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.
Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.
I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

Hi,
I have a need to display on screen AND email a pdf report to email addresses specified at run time, executing the report with a parameter specified by the user. I have looked into data driven subscriptions, but it seems this is based on scheduling. Unfortunately for the majority of the project I will only have access to SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Production system is Enterprise), so I cannot investigate thoroughly.
So, is this possible using data driven subscriptions? Scenario is:
1. User enters parameter used for query, as well as email addresses.
2. Report is generated and displayed on screen.
3. Report is emailed to addresses specified by user.
Any tips on how to get this working?
Thanks

If anyone could confirm...
SQL Server 2000 SP4 to multiple SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition on PDAs. My DB on SQL2k is published with a single dynamic row filter using host_name() on my 'parent' table and also join filters from parent to child tables. The row filter uses joins to other tables elsewhere that are not published to evaluate what data is allowed through the filter.
E.g. Published parent table that contains suppliers names, etc. while child table is suppliers' products. The filter queries host_name(s) linked to suppliers in unpublished table elsewhere.
First initial sync with snapshot is correct and as I expected - PDA receives only the data from parent (and thus child tables) that matches the row filter for the host_name provided.
However - in my scenario host_name <--> suppliers may later be updated E.g. more suppliers assigned to a PDA for use or vice versa. But when I merge the mobile DB, the new data is not downloaded? Tried re-running snapshot, etc., no change.
Question: I thought the filters would remain dynamic and be applied on each sync?
I run a 'harmless' update on parent table using TSQL e.g. "update table set 'X' = 'X'" and re-sync. Now the new parent records are downloaded - but the child records are not!
Question: I wonder why if parent records are supplied, why not child records?
If I delete existing DB and sync new, I get the updated snapshot and all is well - until more data added back at server...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible (or not) to have dynamic filters run during second or subsequent merge?

I have a Stored Procedure for processing a Bill of Material.
One column on the Assembly Table is a Function Name that contains some busniess rules.
OK, now I'm doing a Proof of Concept and I'm stumped.
Huuuuh!
I will ultimately have about 100 of these things. My plan was using Dynamic SQL to go execute the function.
Note: The function just returns a bit.
So; here's what I had in mind ...
if isnull(@FnNameYN,'') <> ''
exec spinb_CheckYN @FnNameYN, @InvLineID, @FnBit = @FnBit output
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spinb_CheckYN
@FnNameYN varchar(50),
@InvLineID int,
@FnBit bit output
AS
declare @SQL varchar(8000)
set @SQL = '
if dbo.' + @FnNameYN + ' (' + convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) + ')) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0'
exec (@SQL)
GO
Obviously; @FnBit is not defined in @SQL so that execution will not work.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
So; is there a way to get a value out of a Dynamic SQL piece of code and get that value INTO my OUTPUT variable?
My many thanks to anyone who can solve this riddle for me.
Thank You!
Sigh: For now, it looks like I'll have a huge string of "IF" statements for each business rule function, as follows:
Hopefully a better solution comes to light.
------ Vertical Build1 - Std Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_14'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_14 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
------ Vertical Build1 - Scissor Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_15'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_15 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
.
.
.
etc.

I have a requirment which i have partly accomplished , but could not get through completely
i have a file which comes in a standard format ending with date and seq number ,
suppose , the file name is abc_yyyymmdd_01 , for first copy , if it is copied more then once the sequence number changes to 02 and 03 and keep going on .
then i need to transform those in to new file comma delimited destination file with a name abc_yyyymmdd,txt and others counting file counting record abc_count_yyyymmdd.txt. and move it to a designated folder. and the source file is then moved to archived folder
what i have taken apprach is
script task select source file --------------------> data flow task------------------------------------------> script task to destination file
dataflow task -------------------------> does count and copy in delimited format
what is happening here is i can accomlish a regular source file convert it to delimited destination file --------> and move it to destination folder with script task .
but cannot work the dynamic pick of a source file.
please advise with your comments or solution you have

-- user filepath is a variable from ssis package. File name is the output from SQL query. using script task i have assigned the values to @[User::FileName] .
When I debugged the script task the value getting properly but same variable am using for Flafile destination. but its not working.

This is what I'm trying to do:
If String AB06 is then I need to get AB05; if it is AB11 I need to get AB10.
My select statement looks like this:
select 'AB'+(cast(substring(period,3,2) as int)-1) from table.
Result is AB6. But I want AB06 (ABzero6)
But when I do this, I'm getting AB6 instead of AB06. Can someone please tell me how to have '0' in front of 6? I guess when I cast it as integer, it is ignoring the leading 0.
Thanks.

Hi
I am calculating percentage using expression. I want to display % at the end of the result.
If I use P1 or P0 somehow it multiplies the result with 100 I guess.
Here is what my calculated value is
15.384515
and I want to display 15.38%
Using P1 or P0 I am getting 1,538.5%
How can I get the desired result?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Amit

Hi there
I got the following returned simple dataset as follow:
Code Snippet
ReportViewType; Category; Name; Units; Price;
LIST_VIEW; FRUITS; Apple; 1; $10
LIST_VIEW; FRUITS; Banana; 2; $11
LIST_VIEW; CARS; Corolla; 8; $100
LIST_VIEW; CARS; BMW; 10; $200
I've managed to grouped by Category field nicely and added extra calculated column for handling to total plus as well as Total for each group plus added a new row for TOTAL in the TABLE and returned as follow:
Code Snippet
FRUITS
Apple; 1; $10; $10
Banana; 2; $11; $22
TOTAL FRUITS; $32
CARS
Corolla; 8; $100; $800
BMW; 10; $200; $2000
TOTAL CARS: $3000
TOTAL: $3032
Now I want to put another extra row underneath TOTAL for handling the calculated but the business rule is only for displaying from the first group for instance:
Code Snippet
TOTAL: $3032
Calculated Average per fruits: $1010.67 ($3032 / 3 UNITS).
3 UNITS is coming from Units for Apple and Banana.
I don't know if I can do this cause i did try to use
Code Snippet
=SUM(IIF(Fields!Category.value = "FRUITS", Fields!Units.Value, 0))
But it's successfully compiled but the report result error (#Error) on that field only. Any ideas?
I thought a simple like this can be handled quite easily instead of creating a new report view type in the the same dataset to handle this particular extra line.
Waiting your comment/feedback.

I am trying to create a user permission system that is stored in a database. What is the best table structure for accomplishing this? How could I display the permissions in a grid? Currently I have a users table and a permissions table. I created a map between the two. However, I don't see how this allows me to display a grid. All my "columns" for permissions are actually rows from the permissions table. So ideally my grid would look something like this. User | P1 | P2 | P3 |A | T | F | T |B | T | T | T |Thanks for any help. I am relatively new to SQL so please explain gently.
