Distribution Of Application With SQL Server DB

Aug 14, 2007

If I create a Window's application that uses a MS Sql Server DB created with the express edition, do I need to get permission or submit royalties for distribution of my application? If so, where can I find the required info? I have been Googling without success and want to understand what is involved.

My projects are mostly for fun and my own amazement at this point, but I thinking about creating something that may actually become a product and need some guidance before I get much further along with it.

Distribution Clean Up: Distribution Job Not Removing Snapshots

Jul 6, 2007

On SQL Server 2005 SP2 for Publisher and Distributor on the same instance, my old snapshots are not being cleaned up.

The following error is in the agent history:

Executed as user: DomainMyUser. Could not remove directory '\vmsql01ReplDatauncPublication_TRANSACTIONAL20070702104416'. Check the security context of xp_cmdshell and close other processes that may be accessing the directory. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 20015). The step failed.

xp_cmdshell is enabled and I can run commands like :

exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell ' md c:TestFolder'

The permissions to the snapshot share and file system are that DomainMyUser has full control.

I have logged into the machine as this user and can remove snapshots so it does not seem to be a permission issue.

On other machines I do not get any errors but the snapshot folder still is not cleaned up.

Any suggestion as to what the problem could be?

Thanks,

Amy

Replication - Distribution Task - SQL Server Not Found.

Mar 8, 2000

I have set up replication on two SQL Servers (6.5), SP5a, on NT 4.0 (SP3). The Distribution Task on the Publisher is failing with the following error:

08001[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][dbnmpntw]Specified SQL Server not found.

I am using standard security in a workgroup environment. I have my trusted connection setup and I am using named pipes. I had this process working on our test servers but when I tried to implement it into production I received the above message. Please give me some ideas or things to try. What source can I use to look up the 08001 error?

Thanks, Kevin

SQL Transactional Replication Distribution Server Struggling

Jun 5, 2006

We are attempting to rollout a name and address system to 10,000 users who will use an application connected to an MSDE database.

We are using transactional replication to distribute data updates to them. Clients are connecting via the On-Idle feature of Synchronization Manager to grab transactions.

Server spec:
Network card: 1GB
Processors: 2* Xeon 3.2Ghz
Server spec: DL380 2Gb memory
Concurrent connections set to: 600
Disc: RAID 10 with 6400 controller

We are not using hyper-threading.

So far we have rolled the system out to 3500 subscribers, 500 per day.

Each day a subsciber will receive at least 400 transactions and 5000 commands.

Latency is 6 seconds, delivery rate 180 commands per second at less busy times.
Latency is 14 seconds, delivery rate 127 commands a second at busy times.

I have seen it get as slow as 0.04 commands a seconds at busy times.

The server becomes incredibly slow when there are more than 50 concurrent connections.

We are seeing 100 CPU for most of the day as clients connect to the distributor at various times. Lunchtime is particularly busy when people go to lunch, leaving their machines idle. We see lots of "time-outs" and "unable to connect to distributor" messages on the replication monitor during peak times.

What can we do to improve the performance of the distribution server?

Are we being over-ambitious by selection SQL Replication for this scenario?

Thank you for any help!

Best wishes

Julian

SQL Server 2012 :: Data Statistics For Population And Distribution

Aug 19, 2015

I have been asked to create a report for one of our clients. The report is pretty basic but I am concerned about the overheads with my planned approach. The report is at a table and field grain to include values for:

* Min column value
* Max column value
* Number of discrete values
* Number of populated values (not NULL)

My current plan is to have a cursor over a limited view of sys.tables and sys.columns that will run a dynamic SQL query to import the results into a table that I can then output. There must be a better way of doing this and I don't have access to any DQS services.

I tried various connection settings under the configuration manager and things like adding entries to my host file with no luck. Understand that this requires the server name but failing at providing this for the connection to start the wizard. I am missing something simple here?

Distribution Of SQL Server 2005 DB With Full-Text Search

Sep 8, 2007

Using SQL Server 2005 Express (Advanced SP2) I have created a Full-Text Search application in VB for distribution on CD for single PCs. Works fine on my local machine during development.

Although the SQL Server 2005 Express edition can be distributed freely, it does not seem to support Full-Text searches in the distributed version. Is this true? Or am I missing something with my deployment?

If I need another version of Sql Server for distribution of a Full-Text Search app, how do I go about obtaining the proper DB and permission for distribution? The DB size is about 600 MB.

Does The Sql Server 2005 EVAL Distribution Support Run Of Packages Under DtExec?

Mar 23, 2006

I believe I have made a complete install of Sql Server 2005 on my dev. machine, including all client tools, and can run SSIS packages from the dev. environment.

However DtExec refuses to run any package and always throws the "insufficient version" error (as does the "RunPackage" component, probably for the same reason).

I have repeatedly attempted to find something more to install from the Sql Server 2005 eval release that will allow DTExec to run without the "insufficient version" error, but can find nothing else to install from the eval. The install wizard (and the "change" wizard) indicates everything is installed and will not build a list of any additional components to install.

Are we sure that DtExec will install and run from a sql server 2005 eval distribution?

Licenses are in the pipeline (not that pipleine) but we need to start testing our SSIS solution in the meantime.

p.s. Kudos to the dev. team, it really is an excellent tool!

Thanks,

Ken

SQL Server 2008 :: Backup Of Distribution Database Hangs On Stored Procedure

Nov 29, 2014

Have a server running 14 production databases, 12 of which are replicated (transactional replication) to a second server for reporting. Distributor on same machine as publishers. All set to 'SyncWithBackup' = true, distribution set to Full recovery mode, log backups every 30 minutes, full backup nightly. This generally runs just fine.

Occasionally, the process 'hangs' indefinitely (has gone 12 hours or more before being caught) and I need to stop the backup job, stop one or more of the log reader agents, and restart everything, and it proceeds just fine. Annoying, but not fatal, and not very often.

This time, no matter what, the backup job hangs when it runs. This is true whether it is the FULL backup or just a Transaction Log backup. It hangs on the stored procedure sp_msrepl_backup_start, at the point where it is attempting to update the table 'MSrepl_backup_lsns'. When it is hung like this, all of the log reader agent jobs are also hung, blocked by this stored proc. I've tried stopping ALL of the log reader agents prior to starting the backup, but the backup process still hangs up at the same spot and never ends.

I can run the select statement in that SP that gathers the data for the databases 'manually' in a query window and it finishes in about 10 seconds. It actually seems to be hung up on the 'UPDATE' statement. When it is hung, I cannot SELECT from MSrepl_backup_lsns unless I append WITH (NOLOCK) to the statement. Nothing else I can find indicates that there is anything else locking that table. DBCC OPENTRAN shows that there is a lock on that table held by that stored proc -- but I can't see any reason why it won't update the table (17 total records) and move on.

As I said, normally this runs just fine. Totally baffled by what may be causing this at this time.

SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition - Distribution Agent Dieing When Network Connection Fails

May 21, 2007

Hi,

We have replication setup on a sql server 2000. We encountered issue that the distribution agent goes down (distrib.exe stop running) in the event of network connection broken. We would like to know:

is this the expected result that the distribution agent will go down in the event of communication failure between the distribution server and subscriber server?
if not, is there a way to programmatically control and restart the agent?
Is there any sp in SQL server which can monitor the replication communication error message?
is there any sp in SQL server which can be run to restart the agent?
For the best practice, what do you think we can do to achieve an €˜event-driven€™ kind of mechanism so when an communication breaks, the agent can be restarted by the triggered event (or at least a simple way to automatically restart)?

Thanks

Bill

Can't Connect .Net Application From Windows Server 2003 To Database Server (SQL Server 2000)

Apr 3, 2008

Hi,
I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
 Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Oran

Hi,

I am developing a windows application that needs to communicate with a remote SQL server 2005 database. Server allows remote connections and MSDTC service also running. Do I need to run MSDTC service on the client machine where I use desktop application ? any ideas ? It's throwing some error like
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.

But my SQL Server allows remote connection, and I am able to do a select statement.
But when I insert/update anything, it's throwing this error. I guess some problem with MSDCT. Anybody have any idea ?

Creating An Application On SQL Server 2005 Express That Will Be Migrated To SQL Server

Sep 23, 2007

I have several general questions about this but I thought I would describe what I am doing first. My senior project team is developing a web application that will wind up using SQL Server for the database. We are writing it in ASP.net and developing the database on SQL Server Express. My job is to develop and deploy the database. I have an ERD designed and am getting ready to start coding the tables, constraints and stored proceedures but am unsure of a couple of things.

1) How do I create a new schema?
2) I can see how to create tables in the GUI but what I am trying to do is create scripts that can be used to create the tables and objects on the actual server that our client will be using. How do I create scripts in 2005 Express? Do I just go click on the new query button?
3) Are scripts that work for Express going to have any problem executing on SQL Server?

Can I Use SQL Server 2005 Driver For PHP On X64 2003 Server As 64bit Application?

Nov 21, 2007

I'm sorry to bother you.

Now I'm trying to run PHP web application on x64 2003 Server with Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The version of PHP is 5.2.3. and the web application should be run as 64bit applications. Since there seems no way to use php_mssql.dll on the environment, I'm trying to use SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP but when PHP loads php_sqlsrv.dll, an error has occurd and there's a following message in an error log...

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'c:phpextphp_sqlsrv.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application

From this message, I thought the distributed libraries for Windows would be for a Win32 environment but there seemed no information that says the libraries run on Win32 environment only.

I really appriciate if you help me.
Thank you.

SQL Server Error While Deploying ASP.Net 2.0 Application To Development Server.

Hi Everybody,
I have made one simple application in asp.net 2.0 using VS 2005. I got following error
Server Error in '/[applicationname]' Application. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
- When i got on my local machine i solved it by deleting sqlexpress directory from user's account and it was due to that I have installed VS 2005 on machine and by default it installs sql express with it.
- But I could not solved this error on my Development Server wherein there is no VS 2005. Only .Net framework 2.0 & 1.1 are there. My all other applications are running well.
So if any one have idea regarding the solution for this error then please reply me soon. It is very urgent.

Thanks to all of you.

Hi,

I'm new to working with replication & I'm just starting to test some implementations. We're still using the beta, v7.00.517. and... basically nothing works, I can't even open any of the replication management features in Enterprise Manager. As soon as I select any item from the replication menu I get:

It's either:

A: a bug, B: something screwed up in my system databases, or C: I'm missing something really obvious.

Any insight would be much appreciated.
