Do Not Have Instance Of SQL Express 2005 Installed

Oct 8, 2006

I am attempting to install SQL Express 2005 on a laptop that already has MS Sql Server installed.

I downloaded the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE from Microsoft's website and let it go through its installation routine accepting all the default answers.

When I open SQL Server Management Studio Express, I can only connect to the SQL 2000 instance. I have issued the 'SELECT @@VERSION' command, and When I try to connect to the instance COMPUTERNAMESQLEXPRESS, the following error message is displayed:
Cannot connect to YOUR-F8A010A9D0SQLEXPRESS.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure my be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)

When I go to remove SQL Express 2005 using the add/remove programs, there is a check box that says
"Remove SQL Server 2005 instance components"
and in the box underneath where it lists all the instances it says: "No instances have been installed"

How do I create an instance for SQL Server 2005?

Thank you
Susan

Can Not Connect To SQL 2000 Instance If Installed After SQL 2005

Apr 8, 2008

I have about 4 SQL servers that have SQL2005 as the default instance and SQL2000 as a second instance. My problem is that I can not connect to the SQL2000 instances using the instance name. I can get to it using IP address and port number or if I set up an alias with IP and port number, but not by name (ie ServerNameSQL2000 which is how the instance was named). If the process is reversed (install SQL 2000 first and then SQL 2005) I can get to both instances using instance name.

I read something about if SQL2005 Browser service is running when SQL2000 service starts, the SQL2000 service won't listen for calls, but it was rather vague and I am not real sure if that is true. I am in the process of trying to test this to see if it is true, but due to the nature of the servers, I have to follow a process and it will take me a couple of days before I can test.

So I was hoping to find someone to deny or confirm this. Or who has had a similar issue and can shed some light on this for me. Thank you for you time. I appreciate it.

Started With Express, But Installed Developer And Don't See Developer Instance...

Jun 19, 2006

I can't tell if the SQL Developer install upgraded the service, but left the SqlExpress version information, or if I'm still really only using SqlExpress.

Also, my intended target is SQL Enterprise, so if I am using SQL Express am I asking for trouble when I go to move the database over? Are the database formats compatible?

I've poked around trying to search for this answer for a while and haven't turned anything up. Maybe I'm searching on the wrong terms...

How To Configure SQL Server Management Studio Express To Allow Doing Non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 From VB 2005 Express?

Mar 5, 2008

Hi all,

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?

Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

MDF Files With VS 2005 Installed SQL Server Express

Mar 21, 2006

I created a mdf file but couldnt for the life of me install it into SQL Sever Express [and when I say install i mean attach].     When I used SQL Server Ent, I had no issues.  The only warning I got was that my mdf file was used by another process when I tried to attach with VS 2005 [ which is correct because ent had it].  I think mdf files are pretty touchy.  Does anyone have any good articles on best practices?  It seems you cant have a db with the same name as your attachment [ which would make sense] or have mdf files in the Data directory of your SQL Server instance you are trying to attach to.  You will get the unc share error if you do.  I think I need to start using user Instances but I could be wrong.  You cant use them in ent but maybe i will solve my issue with attaching db files to express.  I noticed that by default express doesnt install in mix auth mode and there might be some issues with access.  How does everyone else normally install their mdf files for quick deployment [ say you want to deploy your db with your app so that users can quickly get started] ?

Hi,

A simple question. I installed successfully Visual Studio 2008 Standard edition on my VISTA Ultimate 32bits machine. During install process, I also checked SQL Server Express 2005 item.

Which version of SQL Server Express 2005 did it install? Are we talking about SP2? If so, can I install without problem a more complete SP2 package using following links

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2 http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65109
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65111

without screwing the now existing SQL Server Express setup VS2008 installed?

Bought And Installed VS2005 Professional - There Is No Management Studio Got Installed In The SQL Express.!

Jan 26, 2006

Hi Friends,
I have a question. At my home computer i downloaded and installed VWD. As usual it also installed Sqlexpress as part of the installation(i checked the option). Later on i downloaded Management studio separately so i am fine with my home computer as every thing is free.
But at work we decided to develop application using VS 2005 and Sqlserver 2005. So we bought and  installed VS2005 professional edition at work and it also installed Sqlexpress during the installation as a defualt desktop engine. I am fine with that too. But i am not understing where do i get the Management studio? Is it some thing i could get it off the web for free or what? I am not sure we would have an option while installing the VS 2005 professional that also does install management studio and we need to check that option. I am not sure if we could get the management studion off the web for free and and evelop applications.

Please advise. Thanks -L

How To Control SQL Server 2005 Express Installed As A Prerequisite

Jul 4, 2006

Suppose I check "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition" as one of the prerequisites for a custom app in a Windows Setup project.

From reading whatever docs I could get my hands on, it's still not clear to me how to control the installation of SQL Server Express with respect to things like instance name, service account, etc, etc.

In other words, this is stuff that's normally the domain of template.ini. However, there's no clear indication of where I should put template.ini so that the install of "prerequisite" SQL Server Express will see it and configure accordingly...

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help solve this...

Can't Start SS Business Intelligence Installed From SS 2005 Express Edition Toolkit

Apr 22, 2006

I downloaded and installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Installs completed successfully, and I can launch the SS Management Studio, but when I launch SS Business Intelligence Development Studio, I get message saying "Windows is searching for devenv.exe". When I search for this file I don't find it on my hard drive.

I thought I'd reinstall the SS Express Edition Toolkit, but I can't find this application in the Control Panel Installed Programs list, so I can't uninstall it.

Any ideas as to how I can get SS Business Intelligence Studio working?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

ODBC Connection For Client Application To SQL Server 2005 Express Installed On Network Computer

May 5, 2006

Hi All,

I've developed an application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 Express database. I created a DSN to connect to the database through ODBC. Currently, I am testing locally and everything works fine.

I would now like to install my application on another workstation and connect remotely to the database located on my development machine.

The client workstation does not have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on it because I would just like my application to connect remotely by creating the DSN and using ODBC. What I'm missing here are the database drivers. The "SQL Natice Client" is not available on this client workstation. How can I deploy the necessary drivers with my installation file so that I may create the required DSN name using the SQL Native Client driver?

Thanks!

One Instance In Express 2005

Oct 18, 2007

Hello everybody, on my first post on this forum

I just installed SQL Server Express 2005 (server) and created default instance SQLEXPRESS, so that, when I want to access in remote mode, the server conn string is: <servername>SQLEXPRESS

But I have been told there is one way to configure SQL Server so that only one instance is allowed, so you dont need to specify any. If this was true, I would only need to give 'servername' to access remotely.

Is this true? How can I achieve this? Will it be possible to doing it after having installed software, or do I have to uninstall and install it again?

Sorry if this is too basic, I am just having first contact with SQL Server

Thanks very much for your help!!!

Sql Express 2005 Conflicts With My 2k Instance

Nov 8, 2006

Hello,

i have both server instances installed on same machine, 1st is sql 2k enterprise and 2nd is sqlExpress 2005.

all was working fine till today, i renamed a catalog in the express2005 instance. the reason for this renaming was a duplicate catalog name in the 2k and in the 2005 so when i backup my dbs one is overwriting the other because of the same file name.

after this rename i started to get some errors in the application so i decided to rename it back to its original name and relocate the backup destination to other folder.

now the situation in that i cant login any more to the 2005 server, when i login to servsqlexpress2005 (via manager or via odbc) i see always the 2k server.
i tried to login to any server name like .sqlexpress2005 or whatever i always get to see the 2k catalogs only.

in proccess list i see both sqlserv.exe proccesses, also in services all is working fine, i only cant access to this server in any way.

PLEASE HELP!!!
should i reinstall 2005 instance? i dont wanna do that i have so much configs on it include very massive reporting services

***the more that i try to connect my 2k5 server the problem looks wierd more and more.
when i connected as localhostsqlexpress2005 i succeeded... but in 2-3 minutes connection didnt turn off, but it switched to the 2k server...
it looks like a major bug!!! how can connection switch himself between 2 server without even notice??

SQL Server 2005 Express User Instance Madness

Aug 31, 2007

Hello, I'll try to make the description of this multi-problem scenario as short and sweet as possible.

First Problem
The default named instance of "SQLEXPRESS" was somehow installed on my machine and nothing can get rid of it. However, it is somehow invisible to everything else on my system, so I can't use it. How do I get rid of the instance or repair it?

Second problem
I installed another instance of the SQL Server 2005 Express and named it, "SQLEXPRESS02". I attached a database to it and successfully retrieved data from it using an application that used the following connection string:

Data Source=(local)sqlexpress02;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDatabase.mdf;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True

Next, I tried to use a different application to retrieve data from a copy of the same database located in a different directory and used the same connection string as that shown above. When I do this, I receive an error message similar to the following:

Database 'C:PathToMyOriginalProjectinDebugMyDatabase.mdf' already exists. Choose a different database name.

Cannot attach the file 'C:PathToMyNewProjectinDebugMyDatabase.mdf' as database 'MyDatabase'.

I then tried, out of curiosity, to change the Initial Catalog portion of the connection string to "MyDatabase2" and attempt the data retrieval again. The connection string looked like this:

Data Source=(local)sqlexpress02;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDatabase.mdf;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase2;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True

Interestingly enough, it worked. However, when I switched back to the original connection string, I got the same error message as before.

What's going on here? I thought that one of the virtues of user instances was that they would attach at run-time, then disconnect when the application was through with them. If that's the case, then why am I getting errors stating that a database of the same name is already attached? Is there a way to detach these databases from a user instance? Can it be done by some value in the connection string?

Thank you in advance for your help.

SQL Server Express 2005 - How To Delete/drop A User Instance

May 23, 2008

Hi,

I have been working around with SQL Server Express 2005 on VISTA. I created a small C++2008 application which interface with SSE 2005. When running my application, it automatically created a user instance which I would like to get rid of. I just forgot from start to set "User Instance = False" in my connectionstring. (oups...)

I'm aware, from readings I did, that a couple of tables as well as log files, etc. are created under directory "utilisateurs...AppDataLocalMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS". SQLEXPRESS is the instance name chosen during install of SSE2005.

Also using following SQL Statement:

select owning_principal_name, instance_pipe_name, heart_beat
from sys.dm_os_child_instances
I got following result:
owning_principal_name: PC-DE-STEPHANEStéphane
instance_pipe_name: \.pipe6172F4E8-622E-4A sqlquery
heart_beat: dead (at this moment...)

==> How can I make a good cleanup of all this as well as get rid of the user instance itself?

Thanks in advance for any help.

How To Upgrade SQL 2005 Express Instance To Advanced Services For Text Search

Apr 8, 2008

Have searched a good bit for a KB or other article but haven't been able to find one.

I have a 2003 server with SQL Server 2005 Express installed, but not the Advanced Services version. Recently installed an application that needs the Full Text search capability. Would prefer not to remove SQL Server Express and reinstall the Advanced version because I'm also using Symantec Backup Exec 11d which has its own instance on the SSExpress installation.

Is it possible to upgrade an instance to Advanced Services? If not, is it possible to upgrade the entire install?

There's got to be a how-to article somewhere on how to do this. Just can't seem to locate it at Microsoft or with Google.

Thanks for any help.

Do I HAVE To Have IIS Installed To Use SQL Server Express 2005? And Do I Have To Install SQLE2K5 On A Server?

Can't Get SQL Express Installed

May 18, 2006

Hi-
I had previously had VS2005 Beta installed from my MSDN discs. When it expired, I uninstalled it and downloaded VWD Express to install. VWD installed fine, but the SQL Server Express will not install. The VWD install package doesn't give me any feedback, just says it failed. I tried dowloading and installing SQL Express separately, and it tells me that I have to uninstall all components from other versions. I have done that, but still wont install. If I use the uninstall utility on the website, it tells me it can't find any components, and all of the components listed in the manual uninstall instructions are missing, so I can't find anything further to uninstall. (FYI: I'm running XP Pro SP2).
I'm wondering if a registry setting or something didn't get updated on uninstall. I see a registry folder for "Microsoft SQL Server" but I do not know if this could be getting in the way.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've Installed SQL Express, Now What?

Jul 24, 2006

This may be a stupid question, but I've installed SQL Express and I don't know what to do next. I went to my program files/Microsft SQL... and the only folder present is a configuration folder.

Next I went to my control panel/admin tools/ODBC and succussfully created a user data source. (With the help of the forum!)

Obviously, I've never used SQL before, but I've read a couple of books and other stuff online, and I want to teach myself. So I decided to install this. Basically, I'm looking for answers on how to access the database. I know it's installed, it's in the Add/Remove programs list. I just don't know how to connect/access it.

Sorry for the dumb question.

SQL Express Not Registered As Installed

May 22, 2007

Hi All,
I had Visual web express and SQL 2005 express installed.  Then I uninstalled SQL 2005 for a period of time.  In that time, I installed Office 2007 with Business Contact Manager which uses a SQL 2005 database for it's contact DB.  I beleive it's a SQL express 2005 version, I'm not sure.  Anyway, now I install SQL 2005 express again.  I install it as the default instance.  The problem is, it's no longer COMPUTERSQLEXPRESS, it's now COMPUTERMSSQLSERVER.
I've found in the Machine.Config where the provider is located for ASP configuration and I changed it from .SQLEXPRESS to nothing and that did the trick, the ASP.Net Web configuration tool works fine now.
The problem is now Visual Web Express doesn't think SQL Express 2005 is installed.  If I try to create a database, I get a warning to install SQL Express.  I can't find the setting where I can tell VWD that SQL is installed and it's called MSSQLSERVER instead of SQLEXPRESS.
 Thanks

Installed SQLServer Express.....now What?

Jan 13, 2007

Hi

I've succesfully installed Visual C# and I've made a couple of example projects. I now want to try and create a database and see if I can make a C# application that talks to it.

So I've installed SQL Server Express. I was hoping I could open it up and get started with creating tables etc. Instead, my Start menu shows:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

>>>Configuration Tools

>>>>>>SQL Server Configuration Manager

>>>>>>SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting

>>>>>>SQL Server Surface Area Configuration

Where do I go now? Is there some configuring to do before I can start making tables and storing data? Or, have I misunderstood what SQL Server is about?

Thanks
