Does Memory Limit Cause SQL Express To Stop?
Mar 14, 2008
Hi,
I have a small sized db (size doesnt goes on 50mb - currently its 15mb ) on my computer and my application uses that db.
Normall SQL Service uses 50-60 mb of system memory.
But after some heavy usage SQL 2005 express Services memory usage goes near 1GB and sometimes SQL Service stops itself.
Does SQL 2005 express stops itself when it reaches the 1GB memory limitation?
Regards,
Cem

Is there some way to limit the amount of memmory grabbed by SQLEXPRESS as there is with SQL 2000? TaskManager shows it taking 1.4 gig on my server. 2 gig total memory in the machine. I'd like to limit it to someting less.

I'm having problems with SQL 2005 Express Edition exceeding the maximum memory limit. I hard set the minimum to 100 and the maximum to 500, but the server is currently using over 800MB and is causing the system to page. Has anyone had any experience with similar issues and if so how did you resolve them.

SQL Server 2000 SP3 on a Dell dual 2.4GHz Xeon box 3GB RAM Windows 2KSP4. Two aplication dbs, each less than 2GB in size.Had a problem where we would run Solomon queries and what not againstthe box. It had 2GB RAM, and sqlserv.exe would take up to 1.85GB ofRAM, exhausting the physical RAM on the box. SQL would choke and theSolomon users would have problems, and I would have to restart the SQLservice.I added another GB of RAM, bringing the box to 3GB, and increased thepaging file. The OS sees it, and SQL sees it. I check EnterpriseManager, and tell SQL to dynamically configure memory, and it offers anupper limit of 3071MB, so it "sees" the 3GB.I can stress the box with queries to the point that sqlserv.exe takes1.99GB of memory (as viewed through Task Manager) and then SQL serverchokes. It never goes past 2GB, and the OS and box continue runningfine.Does SQL server 2000 have some upper limit, or do I just need to changesome setting through EM?Thanks.

Hello,
I was wondering if there was a setting or a way to limit or restrict the amount of Memory an SSIS package can use? I know that by default the windows OS limits a process (a package in this case) to 2GB and up to 3GB with AWE enable but what if I wanted to say Limit it to 1GB of memory is there anyway to do that? Is there an SSIS Engine setting or Package property somewhere?
Thanks!

If I deploy a database to the web using sql express 05 is there a limit to the number of connections that can be made on it? I have read posts stating that but cant find any documentation from MSFT that supports that idea. I just know that it has a limit of a db size to 4 gigs.
Thanks!

What is the connection limit of SQL Server express. Currently I am using Access database and it allows < 300 concurrent connections. The database is supposed to be accessed through a web page. If there are hundreds of users hitting the page and updating the database, will there be any synchronization issue. How many concurrent connections can be opened?
Thanks

Okay, I know the maximum size limit on a database in SQL 2005 Express is 4GB, but what happens when you exceed that limit? I can't seem to find much info on that topic. What kind of error return would you get from a stored procedure attempting to do an insert that will exceed the 4GB limitation? Also what factors go into that maximum size, factors that might not be completely obvious of course?

Hi,
In MySQL,
"GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'root'@'192.168.1.1' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword' WITH GRANT OPTION;"
This gives the permission to 'root' user from '192.168.1.1'. Another user or another ip couldn't connect to this server.
In SQL Server 2005 Express, can I implement like above query statement?

Hi everybody,
I know that SQL2005 Express has 1 GB memory limitation.
Well, if my server has 2 GB RAM and I have other applications (without memory constraints) how does this relate to the SQL constraints ?
Can I still run SQL2005 Express if other applications exaust only 1 GigaByte of memory ?
Thank you in advance.

Hi
We are developing some applications for Sunit computers (In-vehicle computers) which have limited memory . Because the applications display maps, the will consume alot of memory. Because of this, we want to restrict the amount of memory and other resources SQL Server Express uses to a minimum. I've tried setting 'max server memory', which doesn't help too much as this is only a limit on the SQL engine and not the sqlserver.exe process. What other settings and restrictions can I apply to limit memory consumption by the process?
We have considered using SQL Server Everywhere, but as it doesn't support ODBC (will there be any ODBC support?), we are not too happy about using it. As of now, we have no experience with OLE DB, and the application is MFC 6.0 so we can't take advantage of ADO.NET
Best regards

Dear All,
I have 1 problem here. I developed a desktop application and I am using SQL 2005 Express as my application database.
I found that after I closed my application, the SQL 2005 Express memory resources do not release. How do I release the memory resources except of restart the SQL services?
Do you guy have any better recommendation of other database is more suitable for desktop application?

Hello,
I am aware that SQL Express has a memory limitation of 1GB. I am trying to determine if this 1GB memory is shared with the Report Server. In other words, if I run a query that requires 600MB of memory, and a report that pushes the Report Server to 600MB of memory, will I exceed the 1GB limit for SQL Express? Or are these two separate processes for memory limitation purposes?
If they are separate processes, are there any limitations to the Report Server as far as performance when using the Express edition of SSRS? If not, would it not make sense to push the Report Server harder than the database when running reports if SQL Express is my target platform? (e.g., do MORE work in the RS, and less in the database itself)
Thanks,
Michael

SQL Express Ed is limited to one CPU, what happens if the CPU is a dual core CPU? Does SQL Express care? Does it see a dual core as a single CPU?
As for memory, stupid question, SQL Express is limited to 1 GB RAM, if I run it on a server with say 4GB of ram packed into it, will it affect SQL Express' performance? Will SQL Express even run if there is more than 1GB available? Or will SQL Express simply ignore the extra RAM with no negative consequences?
Thanks,
Andy

I am new here and new to SQL Express. I've searched for my issue, but can 't quite find anything close to the problem or how to solve it, if it's even solvable. I am using SQL Express on a pc to connect to the back end of a database. The front end application (an access runtime) also runs on the same pc. This pc is on a domain. I think I've tried every combination of protocols, and although connectivity via ODBC is successful, the application can't connect - gives the "server doesn't exist or access denied". When I log on to this computer with the "machine" logon (not the domain), I have SQL Express configured to use shared memory, the application runs just fine. I need to use this database for testing in a non productivity environment, but I really hate to log off the domain to run it. Ideas?
Thanks,
pvdcats

Hi,
I'm hoping that some might have an answer for me after much net searching.
I have a server (200GB disk space, Dual 3.8 GHZ processors, 4GB memory) that hosts 6, very small, SharePoint sites (WSS 2.0) and SQL 2005 express handling 1 config DB and 7 content DB's.
The biggest DB at the moment is only 300 MB and the sites are not actively being used yet, they are only open to a select number of users (+ - 25 in total) who are using them as reference "areas" at the moment. Each site is running in it's own application pool as well.
I find that the sqlserv.exe process increases in memory usage and does not seem to decrease. It gets to the point of 960 MB usage and then databases cannot be used (SQL 2005 Express max memory is 1GB). SQL seems to "close" them down and site errors being received are "site is not in configuration database". When the SQL service is restarted the memory usage idles around 70 - 80 MB, the sites are 100% again but after an hour or 2 the memory usage is sitting at 560 MB again and doesn't seem to decrease.
Is there a way I can bring this memory usage down?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem on SQL 2005 standard, I solved by adding /3G in boot.ini and turn on AWE.
but it seems SQL express doesn;t support AWE. so how could I do here?

I have a 2GHZ cpu with 1GB of RAM. I occassionally see very slow (long) queries against a local SQL Server 2005 Express (SP2) database. The issue occurs against different SQL Queries, but all queries are rather basic select statements Perfmon shows that the SQL Server counter for the "MEMORY GRANT QUEUE WAIT Avg MS" gets extremely high (25000+ ms). Perfmon also also shows that PAGING is not occuring, and the system is not under unsual stress. The problem is not reproducible with MSDE.
Has anyone seen this issue, or have any recommendations for a next course of action?

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

Hello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?
Thanks,
fshguo.

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?
Thanks! Aaron B.

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??
thank you

Hi,
I am going to install SQL Server 2000 (then SQL 2K5) on a Win Server 2K3 with 8 GB of ram, but it will be 16 GB in the near future.
I would like to reserve a fixed memory (for momemt less than 3-4 GB) for SQL Server and the rest for application (virtualization).
Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?
How can I manage and optimize memory keeping in mind AWE. (any doc, website available?)

So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.
From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.
