Does SQL Degrade When DBCC Traceon 1222 Is Switched On?

Sep 18, 2007

Hi,

I'm seeing a few deadlocks on my SQL 2005 production database and wondered what i could expect if i switch on the trace flag 1222. Can this cause more deadlocks to occur? Will the performance of SQL degrade? Is it safe to have this flag set on a production server or is there another method you would recommend?

Thanks
Martin

DBCC TRACEON 208

Sep 28, 1999

I notice in the log that when certain users log into the SQL 7.0, the log file shows DBCC TRACEON 208 for their process id. I've looked in the books online but do not see what the 208 stands for. Anyone have any ideas?

Dbcc Traceon Doesn't Stay

Apr 5, 2006

Hi..I tried to turn on the trace with dbcc traceon(1204). and I verify with tracestatus. But after I closed the query analyser and do open the query analyser and do the tracestatus again. It shows the following message. Why ? I had tried many times. same result still. And I also turn on -T1204 in startup parameter.

Trace option(s) not enabled for this connection. Use 'DBCC TRACEON()'.
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

View Columns Switched

Nov 24, 2005

I'm having an odd issue with SQL Server. What happens is the following: I create view1. I then create view2 which uses view1. I then create view3 which uses view2. Then, if I make a change in View1, my other views are messed up. What happens is that columns in view3 (and view2) will be switched. Therefore, if a crystal report for example references view3, I'll suddenly get an exception due to a field in the cyrstal report thinking it's going to get an integer but gets a date instead. It's as if the columns were moved around. Is this a known issue with SQL Server 2000? Has someone else had that here? Has someone resolved that here? thx.

HHello!, the following 3 webmethods still work after i switched them to WCF but now it never accepts my parameters. i didn't change anything in reporting services, but i have a feeling it's not sending the params to the service anymore.

is there an operation contract attribute change i need to make to require the datetime be provided by RS?

Degrade 2000 To 7

Sep 5, 2002

Some general tips and suggestions on this ? Say that Im running 2000 with a database and later discover that some parts of the application/system only works in 7.0. So I want to degrade SQLServer version from 2000 back to the old 7.0. Reinstall with attach/detach of db ? backup and restore ? Are 2000 backward compatible in any way with 7.0 ?

Statistics Degrade

Aug 6, 2004

Hi,

another daily problem ...

I've a table with half million records that my application uses continious with several UPDATE e SELECT statement (about 5 requests/sec).
After several (4-5) hours I've a degrade of performance, but if I update the statistics (of thi table) all return ok.

Now the situation is I create a job to maintenance this table updating statististic two times a day ....

Is it normal? SQL should update statistics by itself?
I choose the wrong way or ... what can i do?

Thx

Performance Degrade

Jun 20, 2007

Dear all,

I would like to share with you the following performance issue:

Configuration-Server

SQL 2005 workgroup edition

Windows 2003 server Small business

2 cpu

3.5 Gbytes Ram

RAID 0

boot.ini /3Gb userva=2560

Page file 2-4 Gbytes to each drive (two drives)

mdf file ~ 300 Mbytes

SQL dedicated server

Configuration-Clients

Windows XP

1 Gbyte RAM

Visual studio 2005 application

9 users

The problem

The users work smoothly for several days. The sql service is running continuously. After few days we have complaints from the users that the system is slow, SPECIALLY when they execute specific queries.

What we have done

1. We refine several queries.

2. We monitored several counters, specially those that reveal performance problems. They all return reasonable values.

3. defragmentation of Hard discs.

4. Stopped the services that are not required.

5. Reindex and update statistics every night.

What we found

When the users are complaining we monitored cpu spikes for sqlserv. We tried to find the reason but failed. The PF is around 2.1 Gbytes, sqlsrv Memory is around 1.5 Gbytes.

What we do not understand is why the system is not slow when we restart the sqlserv service. Also why after several days is becoming slow ??

Is there a memory leak ?

Has to do with continuous tempdb usage ?

Is there a probem with some system resources ?

ANY IDEAS ????

Indexes Degrade Too Fast

Jan 13, 2006

(Win2003, SQL Server 2000 SP4)

I have a database of about 5Gb of size. Some queries where taking more than 1 minute to complete execution (all of them are stored procedures). Because of that lack of performance, I call the command DBREINDEX for each table, executed the sp_updatestats system stored procedure and finally I executed the sp_recompile system stored procedure for each sp in my database.

After all this task, queries completed in a matter of a few seconds instead of minutes. Strange enough is that some hours later (about 6 hrs), after normal use (this database belong to a Client/Server information system), the problem appeared again: Queries started to take too long to complete.

I am assuming that indexes are degrading too fast so that they required another ReIndex, but I am not sure.

Any thoughts? How can I prevent this behaviour?

Thank a lot in advanced.

Setting Alerts Degrade Performance?

Oct 7, 2002

Hello Guys,
I have a Question. I want to set up a sql alert that will monitor a particular counter(Eg. Memory:pages/sec) and send me an email when it reaches a particular threshold.
My question is if i set up this, Will sql will start running a perfmon on the background and degrade server's performance
OR
Will it just read it from some system file or something to to get the values.

I dont know if the perfmon counter values are stored in any system files or not.

Please advise..

thank you in advance.

Replication Performance Degrade In Unidirectional Direction And Lock Time Out (Update Are High Than Inserts)

Feb 21, 2007

We recently implemented merge replication. We were expereincing. The replication is between 2 SQL Servers (2005) over same network box, and since we have introduced the replication, the performance has degraded considerably on subscriber end.

1)   One thing that should be mention is that its a "unidirectional Direction" flow of changes is from publisher towards subscriber (only one publisher and distributor as well and one subscriber ).

2) Updates are high than inserts and only one article let say "Article1" ave update up to 2000 per day and i am experiecing that dbo.MSmerge_upd_sp_Article1_GUID taking more cpu time.what should be do..

on subscriber database  response time is going to slow and i am experiencing a lot of number of LOCK time outs on application end.

can any one can also suggest me server level settings for aviding locking time out.

looking for any experieced solution/suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

DBCC Page / DBCC Checkdb Errors

Jan 9, 2007

Following the below topic:

http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53271

I followed the advice of Paul Randal, but Im stumped as I am not able to determin what the corruption issues are. This is SQL 2000 and the database is a Solomon database that was recently upgraded to 6.5. the error I get when running the DBCC checkdb is as follows:

Server: Msg 8966, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Could not read and latch page (1:18645) with latch type SH. sysindexes failed.
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

When I run select * from sysindexes, I get:

When I run dbcc page (dbname, 1, 18645, 3)
dbcc traceon(3604), It finishes with what appears to be no errors log is as follows:

DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

Now, the bad news. I am a bit of a novice and have picked this up from someone who left my company. It appears the latch error has been around for some time and only reared up when I instituted a new back up system that runs a dbcc check befor backing up. I don't think I have any clean backups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How Do I Allow Non-SA To Use DBCC From VB App ?

Mar 15, 1999

Can I allow a non SA account to issue DBCC or TRUNCATE TABLE on a DBO table ?

I've tried setting this up in a SP where I've granted execute only to the user but the user receives "Only the DBO of the database may run the DBCC UPDATEUSAGE command".

Do I have to set the user up as an alias to DBO ? I'd rather not.

BCP-DBCC ?

Jan 6, 1999

In past days we have a problem with a database. When we tried to fix the problem we found
that SQL 6.5 has a wizard for maintain the DB, but these one doesnt have an option to fix an
individual table. Seeing the way of work of this utility we look that it uses a bcp file.

What is the difference in :
1) apply a bcp(out) to an indivual table, drop the table, create table, bcp(in), create indexes.
We believe this method fixes the fragmentation problem
or
2) dbcc checktable(to the table). This method doesnt fix the fragmentation problem

Thanks in advance

Dbcc Dbreindex

Jan 7, 2002

We are new to SQL Server and we are currently setting up a job that
does a dbreindex for tables that need it. I got the scripts for this
from swynk. 50 of the tables that needed a dbreindex,
(under 90% scan density) were not impacted by running the dbreindex.
I.e., I ran the dbreindex and it left it at 50% scan density.
The fill factor for these tables is set to 100%.
I tried update stats, updateusage...nothing changes....
I am sure there must be a logical reason as to why the dbreindex
had no impact on these tables. Does any one have any info on this?
Thanks in advance!

DBCC Reindex

Feb 19, 2002

Hi guys.
I an application here developed by a third party software house.
In the past, for some reason, the database would fail daily. The software
house recommended that we use dbcc reindex on all tables within the
databases twice daily. This was scheduled and is now running. Now the
database no longer fails.
The fix works and I don't understand why.
I don't understand why this would fix the problem. Why would reindex
twice daily solve the problem.
It seems excessive to have to reindex every user table twice daily.

An incorrect number of parameters was given to the DBCC statement.

dbcc showcontig (PS_ABS_HIST_COM_UK)
