Does SQLMail Require A Mail Account On The Exchange Server?
Sep 3, 2006
I just read that if you use an exchange server...the account that you
start SQL with needs a mail on the exchange box.
Is this true?
I know I didn't need an account when I've set it up before...but I
might have been using a POP3 server.
I have Outlook 2003 installed on the server. Windows 2003 Enterprise.
Thanks.

I am using nt4.0 sp5 with sql7.0 sp3 and exchange client.
Does anyone know how to keep xp_sendamil form putting a copy of the mail message in the sent mail folder or an automated process for deleting all mail in the sent folder? As it stands now I must manually delete all messages from the sent mail folder on a daily basis.
Thanks,
Ed.

Hi all,
I'd like to link a SQL Server database / table to Microsoft Exchange Server E-Mail-Address data, for an Employee Directory project.
I've read a little about "Web Store", a little about ExOLEDB, but I've come across nothing along practical lines. I.e., I still don't know where to begin!
For example the "Web Store" should be created on the SQL server, but how do you create it? Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to configure e-mail alerts on my SQL Server 2000 box.However, we also run Exchange on the same machine. I've been told therecould be conflicts/issues having Outlook on the same machine asExchange; and apparently, one needs Outlook to configure a mail profilefor SQL Server Agent.Is there, in fact, anything to worry about? If so, are there anywork-arounds beside moving Exchange to another server? (we've only gotone server, so this is not an option for us at this time).Thanks.- Dana

Hey All,
Is there any way to run SQL Mail with exchange CLOSED? Keeping Exchange always minimized seems rather unneedy, inexperienced developers might just have the tendency to close it. Is there any way to avoid that?
Also, can SQL Mail be configured with something else besides Exchange?
Thanks a bunch!

I setup a domain user account and e-mail account for the sql agent. When I want the agent to mail me a message
when something happens it puts it in the out box but does not send until I pull up the outlook express and ping the server to send recieve.
If I don't have outlook express running in the taskbar, it won't send the message at all. The e-mail is configured as an internet mail component.
Any suggestions??

I have set up database mail in SQL 2005. We have an MS Exchange group that is alerted when SQL jobs fail.
Two things ;
i) I can't seem to be able to use Exchange mail Groups. If I specify the group name SQL returns ;
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2007-10-30T15:40:39). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address.).
If Exchange cannot be used in the way that Outlook did then how can we alert a group of users about SQL job failures ?
Therefore I tried specifiying an indiviual email address rather than a group ;
- sending a test message (right click database mail) using the full single email address works fine.
- sp_send_dbmail using the full single email address is also fine.
ii) When a job fails the notifications do not seem to work. The Job history log just reports ;
NOTE: Failed to notify 'Operator Name ' via email.
The SQL Error log reports ;
Message
[264] An attempt was made to send an email when no email session has been established
However sysmail_help_status_sp indicates that database mail has started.
The job fails to notify the operator and in this case it is a single email address.
Anybody got any suggestions, (thanks in advance) ?

I saw from SWYNK that you were able to set up SQL Mail using Lotus
Notes. I tried following the post by Edward Alexander but got into some trouble:
We were using MAPI to get to Notes Mail.
1. We know that MAPI works because we were able to send mail by
a. using the exchange client (Windows Messaging client)
b. using VB script to send a message with MAPI.Session
The problem is that SQL server cannot see the Exchange Profile that was defined on the SQL box.

Database Mail only sends SMTP email messages and logs problemsconnecting to the mail server. However, I also need to log bouncedemails (bad address, etc).Are there any clean ways to do this with Database Mail and Exchange?Or will I have to mix Database Mail with SQL Mail to read bounces outof the inbox? Or, have a .NET windows service that talks to theExchange API?

Hi,
Is there any way to use different email accounts for sql mail dynamically on sql server 2000?
Here is the problem:
My sql server is configured to start mail session under account 'xxnotifyxx'.
There are many jobs scheduled to run queries and send out emails to different user groups within the company as well as outside the company from 'xxnotifyxx' as a sender.
However, one of the usergroup within the company is asking for sending out their emails ( from scheduled tasks that uses xp_sendmail ) using 'publishergroup' as a sender.
As far as I know, this is not possible (sql server 2000, exchange 2000 client win2000 ) until I change the mail session configuration to start under 'publishergroup' in stead of 'xxnotifyxx'. If I do this, 9 other groups have problems with this.
Is there a work around for this kind of situation?
Thanks,
Shaili

Hello all,
I get a strange error message when I try to create a Database Mail account. I know the script is OK because it works fine on another SQL 2005 Server. This script is as follows:
exec msdb.dbo.sysmail_add_account_sp
@account_name = 'SMTPAccount01' ,
@email_address = 'someone@somecompany.com' ,
@display_name = 'Sales System - Company Name' ,
@replyto_address = ''someone@somecompany.com' ,
@description = 'SMTPAccount01' ,
@mailserver_name = 'somecompany.com' ,
@port = 25 ,
@username = 'someone+somecompany.com' ,
@password = '1234'
The error message I get is:
Msg 15466, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
An error occurred during decryption.
I tried installing SP2 and that didn't help.
Someone help please!
Thanks in advance.

I have been running a script in SQL Server 2000 as sa also as a Active Directory user who has administrator rights (I tested both approaches SQL Server then Windows Authentication) in Query Analyser which grants execute rights to the stored procedures within the database instance and Query Analyser does not give any errors when I run the script. I have made sure that each transaction has a go after it. I then return to Enterprise Manager, check the rights (I apply them to roles so that when we create another SQL Server user we just grant him/her rights to the role) and discover that the role has not been granted the rights. I seems to be occurring only with 2 of the procedures. Is there a known bug that might be causing this?
yours sincerely

During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.

I am trying to setup cached reports so that one of my larger reports doesn't have to be re-run every time someone wants to view it (the data source only updates every 24 hours).
Anyway I made a new data source, set the report to use that, and in that data source I said to use "SQLexampleUserName" as the stored credentials.
Now when I go to run the report it says: Login failed for user 'username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
This is referenced in the MSKB here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555332
Which makes sense, but now my question is: If I want to used a cached report do I HAVE to allow SQL Server Credentials?
I was using Windows Authentication only up to this point.

Import Exchange into SQL Server with DTS?
Our users enter data into the MS Exchange database using custom Outlook forms. We want to import that data in SQL Server using SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS). We do not see Exchange in the Data Source list in the DTS wizard. Is there an easy way to do this? Maybe an OLEDB provider for Exchange?
Thanks,
Bob

Has anyone been able to solve the issue with setting up a package in EM, which connects to an Exchange(.edb) database and extracts the data into a SQL Server db. Previous message posts don't offer much insight. So far, all I have is using Access 2000, to connect & move the data, then extract from here.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,
On my SQL Server 2000, I have successfully created a linked server to my Exchange 2000 server (located on the same physical computer). I can't send request and everything is fine.
But now, I would like to apply the "Impersonate" setting. The big problem I've got is that Exchange doesn't use a login and password for the authentification but use the Windows credentials.
I have try things like :
login : <domain name><username> with the real password
login : <username>@<internet domain name> with the real password
but that doesn't work.
I would like to know if there is a way to "impersonate" user log on the SQL Server when they try to use the linked server to Exchange Server.
Thank a lot

When I create a new EMPTY website and I rightclick on my website in the solution explorer and choose add item, I chooe SQL Database, I give it a name 'database.mdf' and click add. I get the following message:
you are attempting to add a database to an asp.net application. for a database to be gfenerally consumable in your site, it should be placed inside the 'app_data' folder. would you like to place the database inside the 'app_data' folder? I click YES (I know this message is normal)
then I get the following message:
Connection to SQL server files (*.mdf) require SQL express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=49251
I can add anything else but this damn mdf file.

Or can it record before and after column changes based on the LSN only?
An extract from a file based legacy accounting system is performed every night. The system does not have a primary key because transactions are managed through program code. (the more things change...). The extract is copied to text in Unix and FTP'd to Windows, where the file is loaded into SQL Server by kill & fill. Because of the expense of modifying the source system, there is enormous inertia/resistance to injecting a primary key at the source, so kill & fill it stays.
In reading about Change Data Capture, it seemed to me that column level insert update and delete are stored in tables that remember the before and after content of each column tracked. In my reading I have seen many references to the LSN to decide when and what to record as changed, but I have not seen any refereference to the necessity of a primary key for Change Data Capture to work. This is in contrast to replication, where the requirement for the existence of a primary key is made plain.
Is it possible to use Change Data Capture against a table without a primary key? How to use it to change the extract from kill and fill to incremental.
