Problem In Installing SQL Server 2005 (Beta Version Is Not Getting Uninstalled)

Sep 17, 2007

Hi All,

I had installed a beta version of SQL Server (SQL Server 2005 CTP) and now I want to install a full version of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on my machine. I have properly uninstalled all the CTP componenets from Add-Remove programs and even deleted the registry data of that installation. I have also removed the related folders from the hard drive.

When I run the setup of the full version it says that setup has detected the beta versions of either .Net Framework, Visual Studio or SQl Server. Remove the beta components using Add-Remove programs and try again. Can anyone help me out of this problem?

Regards,
Sachin

SQL Server 2005 Express Installation Problem: Incompatible Components From Beta Version Of .NET Framework

Oct 21, 2005

Hi all,
Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error:                                                                        Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup                                                        The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup.
This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error:                                                                                                   SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again.
I am confused and lost in this installation problem.  Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC?  Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express?  Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott  Chang

Continued DTS Support With What SQL Server Version/Edition

Jan 18, 2006

We currently have access to another department's SQL server.  However they are taking that server offline within a few months, and we will need to migrate our data and DTS packages to a new solution before then.  We have about 30 databases and 20 somewhat simple DTS packages, but only a few users need access.  Funding is very tight.

SQL 2005's support of DTS is somewhat of a mystery to me.  Docs state with 2000 Enterprise client tools installed + Express edition, that I can run DTS packages on Express edition.  But the docs do not state the procedure for doing so, and I cannot register the Express server in the Enterprise manager(states must be using 2005 version of Enterprise manager).  It seems I can Design a DTS package that resides on the 2000 server and specify a connection to the Express server, but the DTS package would not run, stating always that the table was in use, and I haven't explored it any further.  May have just been a quirk.

I'm trying to conquer this in two pieces:

Cheapest solution for graphical design of DTS packages, or some techniology similar(I think I understand that this is called SSIS in 2005?).  This would be needed by 1-4 users.

SQL 2005 Developer Edition for each user, only about $50 per user.
MSDE for each user, but can this house DTS packages and be connected to by enterprise manager?
Cheapest solution for data access and ability to run DTS packages by 2-10 users.

If SQL Express Edition is used to house data, can the DTS packages be distributed in some way that allows the users to run them?  I.E. exported as VB code or some sort of file that can be loaded by an Access 2002 or VB.NET frontend.
Can all users have Developer Edition or Desktop edition and run the DTS package from it, but have the DTS package connect to the Express Edition server where the data is housed?  Or would this be a violation of what the Developer Edition is intended to be used for?
Any other suggested scenarios are welcome.

Are we allowed to continue using the 2000 Enterprise manager after we no longer have access to a licensed SQL 2000 Enterprise server?

The feature comparison for the different 2005 editions doesn't mention DTS, but I know it works for some editions if the add on components are installed.  I'm just not sure which versions support this.

Getting MS Remote Support For SQL

Feb 4, 2008

Hi, I need to get help for a SQL issue from Microsoft. On the website there seem to be two options--one is email support for $99 and another is "online" support for $259. What's the difference? Does the $259 option mean that Microsoft will remote log into my SQL Server and fix the issue while I watch? This is what I need done. Does this $259 pay for the whole issue, until it is resolved?

I am a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCSA)--do I get any discounts or is there any other avenues I should take to get remote support for SQL Server 2005? I wasn't sure where to ask this question, if it is more appropriate elsewhere then let me know.

Thanks!

SQL Express Beta To SQL Express Current Version

Apr 1, 2006

I have a database which was created in a beta release of SQL Server Express. It was also create when I had the .Net Framework 2.0 Beta installed.

Since then, I have installed .Net Framework 2.0 (Current Release) because that is what was required for MS SQL Server Management Studio Express.

When I try to connect to the DB now it says Cannot connect to server.

I also have the mdf/ldf files. When I try to attach them on another computer running the latest version of SQL Server Express it says:

Database 'Name' connot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this vertion of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database....

Any ideas how i can get the mdf/ldf files converted over? Or how I can attach the the ealier version of sql server express?? thanks.

New Data Source VB2005 And Access 2007 Beta

Aug 17, 2006

Well I'm hoping I'm asking this in the right place. But probrably not. I am using VB2005 express and have Access 2007 beta. When I try to add a new data source VB is looking for a .mdb database type. However Access 2007 beta uses .accdb. I'm not sure how to get these two talking since in the vb drop down boxes all it list is a connection on access with .mdb and all files. When I try all files and pick the accdb data I get the "Couldn't connect with data sorce c:blahblah/bills.accdb.mdb. This an error or am I just totally off the mark? Any help would be appreciated.

I found info about modifying the MSDTC security settings under "component services" and did so. I made sure everything was allowed. However, the result was the same. Does anyone have any other idéa about what could cause this problem?

PS. The package works fine if I set up both databases on the same physical machine...

Selecting Version Of Remote SQL Instance Into Local Variable?

Feb 28, 2007

Hello all,
I'm a bit new to SQL Server and T-SQL (my background is in DB2), so hoping you can help me with this. I'm writing a T-SQL script that's hopefully going to scan a bunch of SQL server instances and record the results. We've got a mix of SQL2K and SQL2K5 instances, and for part of my script I only want to run something if the remote instance is SQL2K.

I'd tested this on my local PC with several instances created and it worked fine. When I try and run it for instances located on other servers it barfs  . From what I've found from looking up the error message it looks like I've got myself a loopback -- but I don't know how to get around it - any ideas please?

DECLARE @tempdata TABLE (scratch sql_variant)
DECLARE @debug tinyint
DECLARE @server sysname
DECLARE @version varchar(20)

SET @debug=1
SET @server='SQLSERVER_INSTANCE'

INSERT INTO @tempdata (scratch) EXEC ('[' + @server + '].master.dbo.sp_executesql N''SELECT SERVERPROPERTY(''''ProductVersion'''')''')
SELECT @version = convert(varchar(100),scratch) from @tempdata
DELETE FROM @tempdata
IF @debug>0 BEGIN PRINT @server + ' is running SQL Server version: ' + @VERSION END
IF charindex('8.00',@version) > 0 BEGIN
PRINT 'SQL2K-only code goes here'
END

The error I get is:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SQLSERVER_INSTANCE" returned message "The transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions.".
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SQLSERVER_INSTANCE" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

I get this error running from a SQL2K5 instance against both SQL2K or SQL2K5

TIA, moff.

Does Linked Server For MS Access Support Transaction?

Aug 16, 2007

Dear all,

We have connected a Access to a MS SQL Server 2005 as a Linked Server with the followoing settings:

1) Provider: Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider

2) Product Name: Access

3) Data source: X:XXXXX.mdb

4) Provider string: ;pwd=YYYYYY;

5) Collation Compatible: False

6) Data Access: True

7) Rpc: False

8) Rpc Out: False

9) Use Remote Collation: True

10) Collation Name:

11) Connection Timeout: 0

12) Query Timeout: 0

We found that when cannot have any insert/update/delete statement for this linked server if transaction is began. Otherwise, we will have the following exception.

============

Msg 7390, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The requested operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "ZZZZZZ" does not support the required transaction interface.===========

We wonder whether the problem is because Access does not support distributed transaction. If so, do you know any workaround will work for us?

Thanks and regards,

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?

SUSER_SNAME() In Windows Intranet App

Oct 19, 2006

I've just broken out in a bit of a cold sweat on reading a couple of other posts in here...My scenario is that I've developing an intranet only application which will use Windows authentication at the back end, with users allocated into several NT groups (Users, Managers, PowerUsers, Admin etc) and given permissions to the appropriate stored procedures/ views. Windows security will also be used on the front end, so that less privileged users won't be able to see web pages or their menu entries. I'm assuming this is a common scenario and have been blithely developing away without giving much extra consideration to it. However, I'm using SUSER_SNAME() in some of my procs and triggers to record who updated or inserted records. From what I've read, it appears that this function will only return the ASP.NET user, not the Windows NT username of the person under a Windows authenticated ASP.NET application. Is this correct? If so, does all the security have to be scripted in the front end, and given that triggers don't take parameters, how can I supply a trigger with the actual name of the person who made the change.Apologies if I have the wrong end of the stick, I have no way of actually testing the security out at present as I'm working from home, but this is quite alarming, as you can imagine.

Connect To Server Via Intranet - How Is It Done (new To This)

Sep 21, 2004

Hi all!

I have msde2000 on one machine. want to connect to it from other machine. both machines are connected via a switch with integrated firewall.

Do I need to set up this firewall to enable connections? Like opening ports for msde in the virtual servers settings of the firewall?

If I do this, will that make my sql-server visible and accessible to the internet?

Or should I be able to find my sql server without such steps. And if so how?

networking is up and i can access folders of both machines via the intranet. Is that enough or do i need more settings here?

Let's say the machine and thus the server is called Alpha. What goes into my connectionstring from the other machine?

this wont be enough, right?
strconn = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;" & _
"Data Source="Alpha";"

Please shed some light on these questions.

ASP + SQL Loads Really Slow Over Intranet

Jul 23, 2005

Hi guys,I've created a web application using ASP together with SQL Server asour db source, running through IIS 6 on a Winows Server 2003 platform. This application retrieves a list of customer codes from our db, sorecords returned could be as many as 2000+ for any single transaction. The application runs fine for users from the same state. However, ourinterstate colleagues have notice that it takes more than 3-4mins forthe page to load, while it only takes me < 2secs to load. Our intranet server is located in the same state as I, so anyone fromwithin this state has no problems loading the page. All other statesare finding it unbearable.I've done some debugging, and it appears to be a server factor.I saved the page with the longest list to a local drive and opened itlocally in IE and it loads quickly.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to speed this application upfor our interstate users?Any ideas would appreciated. Thanks,Shawn

I have a web application and SQL database on separate SQL 2000 server. I have no admin rights to these servers. The ISP gave me a VPN connection and password to manager my database. If i run the application from my home computer WITH the VPN connected the application works fine. However if i disconnect the VPN or try to run the application from the remote server i get this error:SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI have researched this problem extensively and CANNOT find a solution. The application and SQL 2000 database server are on different computers. The SQL user id and password are different from the VPN connection's.My web config looks like this:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Calling DTS Via ASP.NET Works Locally But Not When Published To Intranet

Jan 19, 2007

I have a DTS package that I am calling in my code-behind (vb) of one of my asp.net pages on my intranet. The package takes a FoxPro table that is on our network and inserts it into a SQL Server table in one of our databases. The package gets called and executed properly when I am working on it in development on my local workstation, but when I publish it to our intranet, which is in the same domain and behind the same firewall, the package does not execute. No error shows up on the published page, but also nothing gets executed. Has anyone encountered this? Here is my code, which is pretty straightforward:
oPkg = Server.CreateObject("DTS.Package")oPkg.LoadFromSQLServer("[servername]", "sa", "[password]", DTSSQLStgFlag_Default, "", "", "", "Invoice Import")oPkg.Execute()
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unable To Remote Access

Nov 22, 2006

Hi all,
I encounter a problem of unable to access Remote Server after i placed my web application into the web server.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)
So I googled and tried lot of different ways of connecting.By piped name, IP, trying instance which that server don't even have one :X.I also tried typing in cmd > telnet localhost 1433It appeared that the telnet fail, i tried it on other machine, it works. So is it cause by denied of access through that port?I checked at the sql client network, it show 1433, i check the server too, it show 1433.I also checked if there's any firewall, it appear there is no firewall at all.The sql server i trying to connect is SQL 2000, it run by Windows Server 2003
Any advise or more information you needed to help me solve this problem? Thanks
