Closing A Connection Created From A SQLDataSource

Jun 20, 2006

I'm new to ASP.NET and I've searched before posting. I have a simple form containing a FormView control. The FormView uses a SQLDataSource. This works fine and in 30 seconds I have a working form without writing any code.A form built this way causes problems with connection pooling because I am not closing the connection. What is the best method for me to remedy this? Every resource I've found explains that I have to explicitly close the connection. How do I do that in this case? Dispose the SQLDataSource in the FormView DataBound event? Rewrite the form so I can control opening and closing of the connection?Thanks in advance.

Connection Pooling Not Working With SqlDataSource

Jun 14, 2008

My total test page is shown below. I monitor the connections by SP_WHO2. Without the second call, connection pooling seems to be working, ie I refresh my browser repeately but the number of connections as seen from SP_WHO2 does not increase.
However, if I have the second call, every time I refresh the page at the browser, the number of connections increases by one. This is obviously not acceptable in a real world application.
I tried both Integrated Authentication (with no impersonation) and using a hardcoded service account. Both have the exact same results. In fact this test is not about multi-user yet, it is the same single user just refreshing the same page.
May I know what have I done wrong? All the documentation from Microsoft says close the connection after using it. In the case of SqlDataSource how do I close the connection?
Thanks

Sp Hold

Aug 23, 2005

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could help...

I have a usertable which adds anyone whom is new to the records. However the site has had quite an increase in traffic and the stored procedure (SP) The problem is that if two new users call the SP with say a second of each other the sp tries to enter the same user key.

The sp basically checks the last id and add 1 on to it.. Simple but inbetween checking and interest someone else is doing the same creating a violation ...

Basically ineed to put a hold on the select and intert until complete... A sort of que up ...

Sorry if it a dumb question...

ps i've read about changing the entire conection but i only need it for this SP...

Thanks

Getting The List Of Connection Strings To Display In The SqlDataSource Wizard

May 15, 2007

I've added an SqlDataSource control to my web page and selected "Configure Data Source" on it. This brings up a "Choose Your Data Connection" wizard, and it asks you to select from a dropdown list of presumably pre-existing connection strings in my web.config file. However none of my connection strings will display in that dropdown list. The only thing i can do is hit the "Create New Connection" button and this adds yet another connection string to my web.config file. I've already ran through the wizard once, created a new connection string, but when i run through the wizard again, even the new connection string - the one created by the last wizard will not appear in the dropdown list. Any suggestions? Jason

Variables To Hold Filenames

I was wondering if it is possible to create a variable that holds the filename as an expression. I am using a For each loop to pick up files and i want to insert the 'Filename' as a colum in to the destination Table so that i can differentiate among the rows in my destination Table.

Using the 'Derived Colum' in DTS I can link the colum to a variable. However i do not know how to create the variable which will dynamically store the filename for each file....

Any Clues...
Would really appreciate the help.....

Or is anyone knows any other simple way of inserting the filename as a column in the destination Table ...Been stuck on this for a while...

How To Get Hold Of Data From Web Provider Using SQL Server?

Feb 16, 2006

I am new to SQL server so apologies if this is a stupid question.

I have a website built and hosted by another company, with SQL server
back end data. They don't want to analyse the data but I do. I am
familiar with SQL and have SQL server express running on my laptop.

So I was thinking I could get them to send me the data from the server
(it will be less than 1GB I imagine), and I could analyse it myself.

So my questions are:

will this work?

and what do I ask them to send me? Is it just a couple of files they
have to copy and send me? Or is it more complicated than that?

Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Many Data Entry Tables - Which Ones Hold Records?

We have an asp.net app with about 200 data entry forms. Customers mayenter data into any number of forms. Each form's data is persisted ina corresponding sql table. When data entry is complete, it needs to beprocessed. Here's where the questions start.How can we easily determine in which tables a customer has data and howbest to select that data?We're not opposed to putting all the data in a single table. Thistable would wind up having ~15 million records and constantly have CRUDoperations performed against it by up to 5000 users simultaneously.With sufficient hardware, is this too much to ask of the db?

Variable To Hold Two Digit Month In A Expression

Mar 27, 2007

I'm using a file Task to rename files to include a Month and Year in the FIle. Part of the requirement in the file name is a two digit month. I have the following query built which will return a two digit month regardless if it's a one or two digit month.

SELECT REPLACE(STR(MONTH(DATEADD("Month", -1,GETDATE())), 2), ' ', '0')

This works perfect when running in T-SQL, but when attempting to define a variable in the expression

REPLACE(STR(MONTH(DATEADD("Month", -1,GETDATE())), 2), ' ', '0') expression keeps failing the evaluation?

Anyone run into a simliar issue or have a suggested work around?

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec ('string Command') Statement.

Sep 19, 2000

How do I use a @variable to hold on value return from an exec ('string command') statement.

Example for:

declare @OldID int
declare @cmd varchar(255)
declare @db varchar(25)
declare @OldOwner varchar(25)

set @db = 'DBNAME'
set @OldOwner = 'USERNAME'

select @cmd = 'select uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

SQL 2012 :: Design A Table To Hold Filters For Selection Criteria?

May 5, 2014

I have an ordering database with several tables that store data of orders belonging to a wide variety of clients. There is a generic report that I need to run which outputs the same data elements. However the criteria to select these orders will vary widely between each client. For e.g.

i) for client# 1 it could be all orders that are still open after 30 days of placing an order

(
OrderStatus = 'Open'
AND
GetDate() - OrderCreationDate >= 30
)

ii) for client# 2 it could be all orders that have been completed 60 days or earlier

(
OrderStatus = 'Completed'
AND
GetDate() - OrderCompletedDate >= 60
)

iii) for client# 3 it could be a combination of different things (all orders in West Region that are in hold status for more than 10 days + all orders in Eastern Region that are in shipping and are expected to be delivered in the next 2 days + all completed orders for the rest of the regions).

(
OrderRegion = 'West'
AND
OrderStatus = 'Hold'
AND
GetDate() - OrderHoldDate >= 10

[code].....

I want to have a stored procedure that selects all data and dynamically attach the where condition at the end for filtering. This way I wouldn't have to worry about any additions/changes that are made to the selection criteria. I can build an interface for admins who can use the UI to maintain the selection criteria and not worry about any code changes to accommodate it. I would like to design a table that holds this criteria. At this point in time, I am thinking of using key value pairs (Column Name, Column Value) but I am not sure how to implement multiple logical operators.

INSTEAD OF UPDATE Trigger To Hold Update

Apr 3, 2008

hi!

i have a database with about 20 tables. i appended to each table a column "UpdatedOn", and i want to write a trigger to set the date of the update date in that column, using a trigger.

i want to avoid the trigger launching for the last column (UpdatedOn).

how can i detect the rows that changed, and modify only the update date/time?
i read something about TableName_Inserted and TableName_Deleted, but i would prefer to copy as generic as possible the data from there, meaning, not to write column names in my script.

another idea i thought about was to prevent the trigger executing if no other column except for UpdatedOn changed, but... i encounter some trouble, when i try to pass column name (as string) to UPDATE() function.(Error: Expecting ID or QUOTED_ID)

thank you in advance.

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

Connection Strings, Trusted-connection VS Username-password, SQL Server 2005 Express

Mar 9, 2007

All --
Please help.
I have some questions about connection strings.

BACKGROUND...

Note that I am using the "SQL Native Client OLE DB Provider", SQL Sever 2005 Express, ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VS.NET 2005.
Note that I do not want to use the "Attach a database file" type of connection string.
Note that I am using the site http://www.ConnectionStrings.com as a reference.
Note that this "Standard security" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Uid=MyDatabaseUser;Pwd=MyDatabasePassword;" />...does not work and causes the following run-time error...A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
Note that this "Trusted connection" connection string...<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=MYTESTOFFICESERVERS;Database=MyDatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />...works but is less-than ideal because it uses a Trusted Connection rather than a Username/Password combination.

QUESTIONS...
(A) What exactly does the error in Item 4 mean?
(B) Do 4 and 5 imply that one must use a Trusted_Connection for all SQL Server 2005 Express connection strings when the database does not reside in the web application's App_Data folder or use a "Attach a database file" type of connection string?
(C) Are there any alternatives?
(D) What do you suggest?

Please advise.
Thank you.

SQL Connection In Vista With Trusted Connection Fails Under Local System Account Until Reboot

Mar 4, 2008

Hi All,

We are using the Windows Task Scheduler as a substitute for the SQL Server Agent, which isn't available in the Express edition. The scheduled task just calls a batch file, which in turn, runs a stored procedure using osql with the -E option for a Trusted Connection.

SQL Server Express has been installed using the defaults, which means the service is running in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account. The scheduled task we create is set to run using the "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" account.

Now we find that on Windows Vista (tested using Ultimate Edition) that the scheduled task fails to run the stored procedure until the machine is rebooted the first time after installing SQL Server Express. When I say "fail", I mean that the stored procedure isn't executed. The scheduled task however completes and reports no errors. On Windows XP, we do not run into this problem so I suspect it has something to do with the UAC in Vista?

We further found that after installing SQL Server Express and creating the scheduled task in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account, the scheduled task (and stored procedure) runs fine WITHOUT requiring a reboot.

Can anyone explain why a reboot is needed to get SQL Server Express to run the scheduled task correctly under Windows Vista and the SYSTEM account?

Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.
