Domain - User Data Types
Apr 22, 2006
Hi,
I'm new in MS SQL Server; comming from Firebird and PostgreSQL. I'm trying to import the SQL Script of a database I have in PostgreSQL 8; one basic SQL functionality is the "domain", as the way to create a user datatype; in my database I have one basic domain: OID:
CREATE DOMAIN dom_oid AS numeric(18,0) DEFAULT nextval('oid_secuence');
Is there a similar way to create this kind of types in SQL Server?
Thank you,
Guillermo

Is there a way to change the physical mapping of a user defined data type to the physical SQL Server datatype. It seems that once you create them, it is just about impossible to change it.
Thanks,

How can you tell which datatypes in a given database are user defined(with a query, not by looking in Enterprise Manager)? This is for SQLServer 2000.

Hi all,I defined unsigned_int in my database, which uses unsigned_int_rangerule. The unsigned_int_range rule is defined as follows:@unsigned_int >=0 and @unsigned_int <=4294967295(4294967295 = 0xFFFFFFFF)The storage size is 4 bytes.One of the tables in the database contains a field that is of typeunsigned_int.When I try to add a new record into the table (ex: using the EnterpriseManager), it always fails in the unsigned_int field if I enter a valuegreater than 2147483647 (which is 0x7FFFFFFF) all the way to 4294967295(0xFFFFFFFF). The Enterprise Manager shows the following message:"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type orlength of the column, or over grid buffer limit."What is wrong here? The 4-byte storage should be good for any valuefrom 0 to 4294967295.Any help is appreciated.Thanks,Ken

Hi,
We have the followoing:
-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)
"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."
All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?
Below are details of the implementation:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)
FROM ''LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com''
WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';
In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:
"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'
Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation.
Msg 7320, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot execute the query "SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn
FROM 'LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com'
WHERE
objectCategory = 'Person'
AND objectClass = 'user'
" against OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI".

I have a root domain and child domain.
After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.
This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.
Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?
I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.
I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.
Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Hello,
Does anybody know an easy way to change User Defined Data Types ownership to “dbo”, without dropping dependent objects?
I know that there is a st. proc sp_changeobject owner, but it does not deal with this particular db objects. Is there a similar st.procedure or script that would do the same operation?
Thank you

We have a database that originally had all objects owned by a vendor id. We are in the process of changing the ownership to 'dbo' and wish to remove the vendor id but have found there are a few user defined datatypes that are also owned by this vendor id. How can I change the ownership of them to 'dbo'? They are currently being used in some of the tables. I tried the sp_changeobjectowner but that doesn't work for these.
thanks for any advice!

I have a table RequestUtility with 3 columns Vendor, name, system. I want to call this table from BizTalk so that I send multiple vendors and will get corresponding Vendor, name and system for that. As I need to send multiple vendors at the same time I have created a User-Defined Table type VendorNames with a single column Names. and have written a SP :
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetName]
 -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
 @vendorN VendorNames ReadOnly
AS
 -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
 -- interfering with SELECT statements.
 SET NOCOUNT ON;
   -- Select statements for procedure here
 SELECT * from dbo.RequestUtility where Vendor IN (SELECT Names from @vendorN)
This is working fine when the value for vendor is present in the table. But if the value is not present it is not returning any thing. But, my requirement is that for example vendor is Dummy which is not present in the table so it should return
Vendor  Name System
Dummy NULL  NULL
But currently it is not returning anything.

I have a requirement of creating nested tables in SQL server. how to create them. Just to give a background I am trying to move the RDBMS from oracle to SQL server.
Structure of tables is as follows. I have table 'Employees' with address as one of the column. I have one more table with columns Street, Town, Dist, State. When I query the table 'Employees' I should see the attribute name and values of all the columns in address table in address column.
Employees: with columns: ID, FirstName, LastName, dept, gender, dob, address
Address (Nested table): with columns : Street, Town, Dist, State
This was done in oracle using Nested tables and user defined data types. what is alternative for this in SQL server. How can I achive this requirement in SQL server.

I am able to use user data types for creating local temporally tables in store procedures, but I receive an error at run-time about the user data type.
Msg 2715, Level 16, State 7, Procedure SP_SAMPLE_TEST, Line 4
Column, parameter, or variable #1: Cannot find data type D_ORDER_NUMBER.
The same user data type is used as parameters in several other store procedures, and they work perfect. It is also used in several table definitions.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance to any one who can help me with this problem.

Hi,
I´m exporting an ms-excel file, then I use a lookup transformation to get a field from a SQL Server 2005 table. The Lookup transformation editor, after selecting the table, shows a warning that says:
at least one mapping between a column from available input columns ans a column from available lookup columns must be defined on the columns page.
So I try to make a relationship in the Lookup transformation editor's column tab where I find the Available input columns and the available lookup columns but I get the following error:
The following columns cannot be mapped:
[Department, DEP_CLEGALCODE]
One or more columns do not have supported data types, or their data types do not match.
The field in SLQ Server is varchar(10) and the input field is a derived column transformation; I have tried different Data Types but I always have the same error.
The DataFlow is: ExcelSource --> Derived Column --> Lookup --> Flat file destination
thanks.

We recently upgraded to SQL 2005 from SQL 2000. We have most of our issues ironed out however about every 1 minute there is a message in the Application Event log and the SQL log that states:
EVENT ID 18456 Login Failed for the users DOMAIN/ACCOUNT [CLIENT: <local machine>]
This is a state 16 message which I thought meant that the account does not have access to the default database. The account is actually the account that the SQL services run under.
Any ideas? We can't seem to figure this one out. We actually upgraded to 2005 from 2000 and had an error appear after every reboot that prevented the SQL Agent from running(This application has failed to start because GAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.) We did a full uninstall of SQL and reinstalled fresh and restored the databases from .bak files and that is when the EVENT ID 18546 started occuring every minute.
We don't have any SQL heavy hitters here so please be detailed with any possible solutions. That you very much for any help you can provide!

I need to provide a UI to get the information to add a windows login to a SqlServer database. The CREATE LOGIN Sql statment requires the user name as "DomainNameUserName". I can get a list of users in XML using the following code:
public static XmlDocument GetAllADDomainUsers(string DomainPath)
{
string domain;
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();
doc.LoadXml("<users/>");
XmlElement elem;
DirectoryEntry searchRoot;
ArrayList allUsers = new ArrayList();
if (DomainPath.Length == 0)
{
DirectoryEntry entryRoot = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://RootDSE");
domain = entryRoot.Properties["defaultNamingContext"][0].ToString();
}
else
domain = DomainPath;
searchRoot = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://" + domain);
DirectorySearcher search = new DirectorySearcher(searchRoot);
search.Filter = "(&(objectClass=user)(objectCategory=person))";
search.PropertiesToLoad.Add("samaccountname");
search.PropertiesToLoad.Add("distinguishedname");
search.Sort.PropertyName = "samaccountname";
search.Sort.Direction = SortDirection.Ascending;
SearchResult result;
SearchResultCollection resultCol = search.FindAll();
if (resultCol != null)
{
for(int counter=0; counter < resultCol.Count; counter++)
{
result = resultCol[counter];
if (result.Properties.Contains("samaccountname"))
{
elem = doc.CreateElement("user");
doc.DocumentElement.AppendChild(elem);
elem.SetAttribute("name", (String)result.Properties["samaccountname"][0]);
elem.SetAttribute("distinguishedName", (String)result.Properties["distinguishedname"][0]);
}
}
}
return doc;
}
This works for listing the names but how do I get the NetBIOS domain name for a selected user as required by SqlServer? I have tried using TranslateName from secur32.dll. That works on some machines but for some reason on other machines, it returns a blank. Is there another way?
Thanks for your help,
Rob

I've been doing some reading on UDT's and have a question...
It was suggested in one of the pieces I read that you could create a UDT for, in their example, cities. And every table that had a reference to city could share this datatype. Now, my initial thought was "wow, what a great idea! I wouldn't have to remember the exact datatype for my primary keys (was it a char(5) or char(6)?) and have a "central depository" for my key datatypes.
So the first question is; what are the disadvantages of such a design?
And the second is; How do you update a UDT? If business requirements change and udt_city needs to be changed from varchar(30) to varchar(60), for example, what would be the way of echoing the change thoughout your database?
My gut reaction for the answers are
1) performance will decrease as effectively the dbms has to "parse" every insert/update to a UDT field in a different method.
2) create a new udt and alter any tables referencing the old one before dropping it.
What do we think?

Hi
Im currently working on a intranet and trying to set up some security. The intranet acesses a SQL server 2000 database. I would like to know if there is a stored procedure(or other way) of returning all the domain groups that a user belongs to when passed the users NT login. I found xp_enumgroups which returns all the groups on the domain and also xp_logininfo which returns the users of a passed domain group. These are usful but i need to just pass the NT username and return all the Domain Groups. Any thoughts, ideas would be great!

1. Is this a OS account where SQL Server is running?
2. Or, is this an account under domain controller on other machine? Is this an account on DNS srver? How do I create it?
3. Or, is this an account in SQL Server?
Where is this account located? How do I manage it?

Hi!
I have a question about creating a user defined type: I'd like to create a table of employee objects which include objects of the type employee_t. I used this structure before in Oracle 9i and would like to know how it can be done with MS SQL Server 2000 or 2005, preferably with Enteprise Manager/Management Studio. Below is an example.
CREATE TYPE employee_t AS OBJECT (
name VARCHAR(10)
jobDesc VARCHAR(15)

I have a UserDefinedType that is Decimal(21,6)
The fields fltValorPendente e fltTotal are of this type. Field intSinal is an Integer.
I execute the following query:
SELECT
(intSinal * fltValorPendente) / fltTotal as Coef,
cast((intSinal * fltValorPendente) as decimal(21,6)) / fltTotal as CoefCast
into tmp
FROM tbl
Where fltTotal<>0
As a result, table tmp is created with the following structure:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tmp](
[Coef] [decimal](38, 6) NULL,
[CoefCast] [decimal](38, 17) NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
How come both fields don't get the same precision?

I have a very simple SQL Server 2005 database, nothing fancy except that I use user-defined types (e.g., udt_Name = varchar(20)). I just set up a login for my first user, using Windows authentication, and gave her the following database access:
default schema = dbo
role = db_datareader
role = db_datawriter
Using SQL Server Management Studio, she can open any table; however, every column that is defined with a user-defined type appears with generic column headings (Expr1, Expr2 etc). And when she opens a table in design view, all columns with user-defined types have their Data Type field listed as "invalid type" rather than, say "udt_Name:varchar(20)". I browsed to the "User-defined Data Types" entry in Object Explorer, and it was empty.
In other words, it appears that she is unable to access the user-defined type aliases, even though she has read/write access to the database. As a very temporary work-around, I gave her membership in the database role "db_owner", but this is obviously not an ideal solution.
User-defined types are a great organizing tool and I don't want to have to redefine all my tables without them. What are my options?

Hi,
I want to use a domain user account not belonging to local admin or domain admin groups in SQL 2000/2005 Enterprise edition. This is what I've done so far..
On the machine that is the Domain Controller:
- installed SQL 2005 as a domain admin
- created a domain user account using Active Directory Users and Computers. This user is only
"Member of" domain users; not any Administrators group.
- added this user to SQL Server Management Studio->Logins and in Server Roles assigned
sysadmin role.
Question 1: Do I need to give any additional permissions to this user to work with SQL?
Question 2: How can I test this user for basic SQL operations like database creation? Can I use Osql?
Question 3: Can I use this user account to login to my domain controller using remote desktop? I tried adding this user to remote users, but in vain.
Thanks!

This is part of the codes of a stored procedure:
-- Create tables variables
DECLARE @_tab_PRNumList TABLE(

However, it cannot be compiled coz of this error:
Error 2715: Column or parameter #1: Cannot find data type udt_PRNum.
This user-defined data type is created in a user database only.
I tried to created the user-defined type into BOTH tempdb and master but same error.
How can i resolove it?
Or it is impossible to use user-defined datatype for table variable?
In the past,
i use this method:
CREATE TABLE #PRNumList (
PRNum udt_PRNum
)
and cerate udt_PRNum in tempdb only could solve it.
But now i want to use table variable.
It seems NOT work for my situation.
