Dont Backup If Database Hasnt Changed

I do weekly full backups of my SQL databases via a scheduled T-SQL job.
I noticed that I have some static databases that dont normally change,
so I dont want to back it up if it has not changed, but when it does,
then I want a backup.
Is there something in the master table, as example, that I can check
prior to running the backup that will indicate any changes?
An example is the Northwind database. I could exclude it from the
backup, but then I would not back it up if it where to change. Again
this is an example, I would not need to modify Northwind.
Thanks in advance for any ideas; they usually give me ideas to problems
yet to come....

Im trying to recover my database using the mdf and ldf files.I dont have any backup and i have recovered two of the mdf files usinga tool which "discovers" deleted files after hard drive formatting...It sounds cool, isnt it...:? :(Obviously, i get a "suspect" message when the server starts and the logfile says this kind of things:·"Full PathName.MDF is not a primary database file." (This is one ofthe files repaired using the magic tool.·Error: 823, Severity: 24, State: 6·"I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset0000000000000000 in file 'Full PathiName2.mdf'... Name2.mdf is thesecond file·Device activation error. The physical file name 'Full PathName2.mdf'may be incorrect.When i try to execute the command "DBCC CHECKDB ('Database_Name') WITHPHYSICAL_ONLY" i get the following message :·Could not open FCB for invalid file ID 0 in database 'Logs'.Do you have any ideas? I am doing a complete backup on a sql 7 db and then doing a completerestore (with overwrite existing db) on a sql 2000 server. This is nowour hot standby server. I have the process automated and it worksgreat. The only problem I have now is the logins dont work.I have tried running EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Report', and thelogins appear.However, when I run EXEC sp_helplogins 'joe', the results are empty.So, I am guessing all I need is a sp that will re-associate my loginswith the correct db and grant the appropriate permissions.If anyone has any ideas that would be great.I have also considered doing a log ship instead of a full backup andrestore. Does anyone have any suggections or good examples of how tomake that happen?Thanx

Hi All,Just wondered if i could ask you for some advice and help.I'm looking to write a site, and one of the functions of the site is to remind the user of a certain event at a certain time. Hello. Have a strange one here. I'm backing up databases locally to a driveon the server daily. I needed to change the time of the backup, and didthat, but it's still occuring at the old time.I deleted the old job, and recreated it with the new time. I won't knowuntil tonight at 12:00 whether that worked or not.Can someone tell me where it saves the maintenance schedules and how itkicks it off? To configure database mirroring
After connecting to the principal server instance, in Object Explorer, click the server name to expand the server tree.
Expand Databases, and select the database to be mirrored.
Right-click the database, select Tasks, and then click Mirror. This opens the Mirroring page of the Database Properties dialog box.
To begin configuring mirroring, click the Configure Security button to launch the Configure Database Mirroring Security Wizard.
but i do not see any "Mirror" Option in the "Tasks" menu.

Hello everyone,I have a webcontrol that uses database-structures alot, it uses the system tables in SQL to read column information from tables. To ease the load of the SQL server I have a property that stores this information in a cache and everything works fine.I am doing some research to find if there are anyway to get information from the SQL server that the structure from a table has changed.I want to know if a column or table has changed any values, like datatype, name, properties, etc.Any suggestions out there ?!

I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".
I tried by using
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF',
MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF',
REPLACE
And also i tried like
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH REPLACE
When i use like this,
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.
Can i anyone please help me out?

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Is there a simple way to tell when a database was last accessed or changed?
We have some databases on old servers which we would like to discontinue but do not know if they are being used.
We would rather not just take them offline.
Is there anyway I can find out if they are still being used?
Please help if you can.

How do i find who has changed the settings in the database.
basically when i looked at this morning i saw a database which is set in single user mode.when i tried to look at the errorlog i found nothing except the spid's of different people and as far as i know i think that spid's are assigned randomly depending on there availability.
Now this has happened twice recently and now i want to find out who the culprit is his username, machine name but not spid.
Can i do it if how can i.
how do i track each and every users info what he is doin and at what time.
do i need to set up or configure any options.
sometimes i also see that there is a dbcc command run by as it says winnt/system what does this mean how is this running.

I am in a bind here..
I am getting the message (after do any sort of query) Database context changed to <dbname> I am using PHP as the p language.
Does anyone have any clue on why it is doing that..
Recently my host upgraded there PHP to version 4.3.10 and before the upgrade the queries were working fine.
Im on a windows server that runs PHP and im using a MSSQL database.
I've checked the bug reports on PHP and didn't come up with anything as well as googling the error..
IF you have any insite on this problem please let me know.. It may be a stupid error that I am overlooking on my part.

Dear all,
I wasn't able to connect to my SQL server 2000 database (which reside in the network in a windows 2003 server) after the IP address of the server has changed and the server is shut down, moved and re-started.
I was able to connect to this server by using ADO using VB. I was able to register this server in my EM and was able to create ODBC connection. Just when using ADO.NET, I wasn't able to connect. Any ideas? Will there be any caching within ADO.NET still pointing to the old IP address?

We had a strange incident with our Database Mail today. We use sp_send_DBMail to send mail from stored procedures in our SQL Server 2012 (11.0.2138). There are 7 profiles available for use by different databases. The actual stored procedures are called by Web apps using a connection string that has a specific SQL user identified.
Last night app 1 was using profile 1 like usual and app 3 was using profile 3 like usual. This this morning (7 hours later) App 3 was sending from profile 1 everytime a call to sp_send_dbmail was made. Not good. App 1 was still correctly sending from profile 1.
We ran a call to sp_send_dbmail from a query window using profile 3 and it sent using the correct profile 3. We used the Database Mail right-click option of "Send Test Email..." to both profiles and they worked as expected.
Our investigation showed that in the Database Mail configuration wizard "Manage Profile Security" section Private Profiles tab... the User name that is used to call the stored procedures from web app 3's sp_send_DBMail did not have access to profile 3 anymore. It did have access to 5 of the other 7 profiles. 1 of the no access profiles was legitimate #7.
The only thing that has been changed lately was, 2 days ago a mail profile was deleted as it was no longer used. We used the Database Mail Configuration Wizard to remove it.

I tried to open mdf file without any success. Then, all database files icon were changed or grayed out. How can i repair or replace the file to it's original file? ex... the file named "event.mdf" has now a wrong icon not a database icon like before.

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"
My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

We take a full backup in the early morning and hourly transaction log back during the working hours for one database in the production server. The application team made certain changes to the design of the said database in their development server. The backup from the development server was restored to the production server during working hours. After the restoration should we take a full backup before next transactional logbackup? Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?

I have a database that is just over 1.5GB and the Full backup that is 13GB not sure how this is since we have compression on for full backups and my other full backups are much smaller than there respective databases...Now my full backup is taken every Sunday night and the differentials are taken every 6 hours after the full backup. Now I have been thrown into this DBA role with little to no experience just what I have picked up and read. So my understanding of backups are limited but what I think I understand is that we take a full backup and the differential only captures what changes in the database so my question is why is my database 1.5GB but my differential is 15.4GB? I have others database that are on the same instance and don't seem to have this problem. I also just noticed that we do not rebuild the index before a full backup like we do on other instances...

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.

Message ordering is of utmost importance in our application.
As i found in testing the only way to ensure message ordering is if they are in the same conversation.If you send multiple messages in different conversations there is no garantee which will be processed first.
Therefore i will be creating conversations that last "forever", that is using a single conversation.
I plan on doing a BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION when an inititator site is setup and writing the conversation handle guid to a table.
I will them simply SEND ON SONVERSATION using the guid, i will never issue a end conversation from target or initiator.
Is this theory solid, ie: is there a better way or best practice to do this?
I know that conversatons persist with sql server restarts, however what happens if an initiator site db is restored ?
I was thinking of adding logic to first check if a conversation endpoint exists with the specified guid if not , then start another conversation. But is this the best way?

hi there, i have a invoice template that when printed has a box for the users address (which there always will be) and a box for their delivery address if they are having the items delivered. However sometimes they dont have things delivered and so the record in the delivery table does not exist.
