Downgrade Install Plan

We are upgrading an application that is not yet supported on SQL Server 2005. The upgrade involves new hardware (including a new sql server). Any gotchas or advice regarding this plan:
1. Install Windows 2003 64 bit, configure hardware appropriately for running SQL Server.
2. Install SQL Server 2000 64 bit using the 2005 license key (is that how you 'downgrade'? I didn't see a 'how-to' article regarding this).
3. Restore backups of system databases from current SQL Server to new SQL Server (note: current SQL Server is running 32 bit - I realize that I need to make sure that I have the same service pack on the new server as that on the current server).
4. Apply sp4.
5. Restore user databases.
Not sure if the 32 vs. 64 bit thing is of any concern or if 'downgrading' is as simple as this.

I am experiencing extremely slow behavior (no activity for > 30 mins) during a SS 2005 Dev Edition install on XP SP2 on various steps during the SQL Server Database Services step - e.g. during "Setting File Security". This is very annoying.
I've found many postings on this issue indicating that OS calls in this part of the install (e.g. LookupAccountName()) are network speed dependent.
Does Microsoft have any plans to rework this part of the install to rid the need of these calls? I really wish the install would be possible without these calls - it's driving me crazy monitoring this for hours. We've got to roll SS2005 out to a couple hundred developers eventually and this isn't going to cut it.

Not sure where to poswt this but I have a question. Is it possible to downgrade a remote SQL instance (the RTC database for LCS 2005 EE) to MSDE / SQL EXPRESS running on the LCS node?
I have two LCS2005EE pools side by side in the same account domain. The company recently went through a split where a part of our operation was spun off to another company. We're trying to figure out a way to leave them a working LCS but cut our hosted server count. What I came up with was basically 3 or 4 possible scenarios:
Leave only two servers (LCS and SQL.)
Try to move and run two instances on new production equipment
Try to downgrade the remote RTC instance into MSDE / SQL EXPRESS and leave one server.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello people,
I'm experiencing problem here that we need to downgrade our sql 2005 back to version 7.0.
Apparently, all the mdf files from 2005 are recognized as "corrupted" by the 7.0 server.
All my dbs are created within 2005 and i'd like to move these to the older 7.0 server.
I wonder whether there are any procedure to convert 2005 mdf files so
that is is compatible with sql server 7.0? or what is the most common
way of solving this?
Any pointer would be appreciated. thx!

my question is simple, i guess, if anyone can help me solve this problem:
I just installed Windows 2003 SBS Premium R2 but i have a software using SQL Server 2000 and not the one included in this version, 2005 wich is not compatible with. How can i downgrade, where cand i get the older server if the downgrade is possible and what else can i do before i shoot myself? Is there any license issue that will not allow me the downgrade?

I have developed a database using SQL Server 2005 Express for 2005 Enterprise. My client now realises they don't have a licence for 2005 and require a copy of the database that will work on SQL Server 2000. I can find plenty of information about migrating from 2000 to 2005 but not the other way round. Is this possible and, if so, I would really appreciate any pointers on how to do it.

I have the following problem :
I have licensed a german version of sbs 2003 premium. With the upgrade to sbs 2003 r2, I will buy the rights to use the sql 2005 workgroup edition. But the german sbs 2003 r2 is not available by now.
I could go in production with the sql 2005 trial, this is an entreprise edition.
My question is : can I downgrade the sql server 2005 from this trial edition (entreprise) to the workgroup edition ? Is it possible ? easy ? any recommendations ?

We have a debate in our team about embedded SQL vs. Stored Procs.
The argument is why use SP's if you can embed the SQL in the code and SQL2K will cache it on the fly?
I can't find any definitive information on pros and cons between the two methods.
If there are no major performance issues, or gotchas, I guess it comes down to developer preference.
SP Pros:
- Great SQL support in VS.NET (dev, debug, integration)
- Seperation of database specific code from middle tier.
- Less lines of code in middle tier
- VS.NET support for .xsd dataset definitions.
- Logic closer to data for more demanding processes.
Embedded SQL Pros:
- Less artifacts for version control
- Better encapsulation of logic
Any info would be appreciated.

I am working on tuning the procedure cache hit ratio for my server. We haveadded 4 Gb of memory to the server, which has helped. In addition, I have runthe DBCC FREEPROCACHE, which helped for a couple of days to get the hit ratioup to about 84% (from 68%).When I use the performance monitor on the server and look at SQL Server CacheManager:Buffer Hit Ratio, I see that the Prepared SQL Plan is around 97%, butthe Procedure Plan hit ratio is down around 55%. I've done some research ondifferent tuning techniques, but can't seem to find 1. a clear definition ofthe difference between the prepared sql plan and the procedure plan and 2.other than adding memory and running dbcc freeprocache, how can I get theprocedure plan cache raised? Hi all--I'm researching the cleanest downgrade path from a trial edition of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise to a licensed Standard Edition copy. It looks like downgrading will entail uninstalling the old version and installing the new version, but I'd like to save the original setup as much as possible. Detaching the old databases will preserve the non-system databases; what method would work best for restoring the system databases?

I have just migrated a complete SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 development server from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 Server. Â I just realized that I should not have used the Data center edition Product Key as this is Development server. Â I am being asked to downgrade to Developer edition. Â I have already migrated all the logins, databases(40 databases), cubes etc. Â I really can't uninstall and reinstall Developer edition. Â How else can I upgrade/downgrade to switch from Datacenter edition to Developer edition. Â

I recently bought a Dell server with Windows 2003 enterprise edition. I wanted the X32 version and metnioned of the same to the sales people, but somehow they put the x64 edition on the server. The database I am planning to use does not work on X64 edition as of now. How do I downgrade the OS to X32 version? Do I need to send the system back to Dell? Machine not opened yet. Or is there a way I can get software CD and downgrade to X32 version?

The benefit of the actual execution plan is that you can see the actual number of rows passing through each step - compared to the estimated number of rows.But what about the "cost percentages" ?I believe I've read somewhere that these percentages is still just an estimate and is not based on the real execution.Does anyone know this and preferable have a link to something that documents it?Thanks

I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

I have compile my application into a Smart Device CAB and also including SQLCE CAB file for SQL.
I have users who choose to install SQLCE into Storage Cards instead and causes the application not to function, when asked which destination to install.
I've done some search and found out about "wceload.exe /noaskdest" but I'm using NSIS to compile into a single .exe file, and its calling "CEAppMgr.exe"
How can I force SQLCE to install into its default directory without asking user?

I've tried looking for a solution in other threads but I couldn't find anything that was completely the same as my situation. I got a new pc at work and I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 on it but everytime I try to install it, regardless of services included or excluded with the install, I cannot get through the install without this error. Below is the excerpt from the Summary.txt log file.

I've searched for and found similar problems that deal with the microsoft.sqlserver.notificationservices.dll not being found but I haven't found a fix that worked for me. These are the fixes I've refered to thus far.

The answer that seems to fix this problem for everyone is to set the MSDTC service login as the NT AUTHORITYNetworkService account. The problem for me is that this is already set to this profile and I've tried resetting the services and rebooting the machine. I did not have a problem with my old machine, which as far as I can tell, is the same configuration, so I know this install should work.
I'm running Windows XP SP2. This is not the upgrade to SQL Server 2005 SP2, this is the original disk that came with Visual Studio 2005.
Has anyone else faced this issue where changing the MSDTC login wasn't the solution? Also, this is my first post, so I apologize if I've left anything out. Just let me know if you want any other information.

I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005.
After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports.

I have deleted a database from SQL Enterprise Manager. Anyone know a way to clear that database from my maintenance plan? I do not wish to just uncheck the deleted database or create a new database plan.

Hi All,
I have around 10 maintenance Plans on my server and all the plans are running fine except for one which takes for ever....Yesterday I scheduled it to run at 1 AM and it was still running when I came in this morning...Usually this job used to take only 2 minutes and now it takes forever....
I tried to delete the maintenance Plan and created a new one , but no luck..
But If I try to back up the database by right clicking the database --
All Tasks --- Backup database , it takes less then 2 minutes..But If I try to run the job created by the Maintenance Plan to back up the database it takes forever and all I can see the status of the Job as ' Executing Job Step 1"..
I created a test database and restored the database in Issue onto the test database and created a maintenance Plan for the test database and it runs fine and takes less than 2 minutes.. and I don't see any security issues on this...
B'cause the job neither fails nor executes ..So there are no error messages to look in to ...
Please let me know if any one has encountered the same problem and how to resolve it..
