Table Name Convention For Related Tables

Nov 1, 2007

Hi,

If I have 2 tables:

TableA
aID
aCount

TableB
bID
bCount

And I need to create a 3rd table that will look like:

aID
bID

What should I call this table?

I've seen:

relAB

AXB

Any other naming conventions?

Recommended Naming Convention For Tables/columns

May 9, 2008

I did a search (google and on the forums) and found a few suggestions here and there, but I'd like something more complete to follow as far as naming conventions are concerned.

I wrote my first DB based on MySQL/Ruby/Active Record type naming convention...

- plural table names
- all lower cased
- underscores between words
- "id" is auto incrementer for each table
- something+"_at" is for datetime fields
- something+"_on" is for date fields
- referencing the primary id in another table is "tablename (singular)" + "_id".

This worked great in Ruby/MySQL, but in C#/SQL Server, its an ambiguity nightmare! All of my "id" fields conflict and alot of my tables have "added_at" datetime fields and they all conflict with each other. Essentially, any field that's named the same in one table as in another conflict on joins.

For example: users post comments to stories submitted by users...

table = articles
field 1 = id
field 2 = title
field 3 = body
field 4 = user_id

table = comments
field 1 = id
field 2 = title
field 3 = body
field 4 = user_id
field 5 = article_id

Trying to join these two tables is an ambiguity nightmare but I'd like to not have to name every field uniquely or start adding table prefixes to them all...

I guess I just need some good suggestions or links to recommended table structure/naming conventions for SQL Server. Thanks in advance!

How To Default Drop Down List To A Specific Value In Database

Oct 21, 2014

I have a drop down list that is populated by a stored procedure which has two int parameters (ID, STATUS). I need to default the drop down list to a value in the database that is associated to the ID & STATUS parameters.

The problem I am having is that it only works if the selected value is the first record on the drop down list. for any other records (outside the first record) from the drop down list i get "The 'SelectedIndex' and 'SelectedValue' attributes are mutually exclusive."

Here is the stored procedure I am using to populate the drop down list:

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[usp_SelectName]
(
@pId Int,
@pStatus Int
)
AS
BEGIN
IF @pId = -1 --THIS VALUE IS USED AS DEFAULT (NOT POSTBACK)

[Code] ....

Here is the TABLE_NAMES that holds the data for the drop down list:

IN_ID IN_NAMESTATUS
6 New 0
4 Generic 0
3 Local 1
4 Storm 0

This is the TABLE_2 that holds the complete collected FORM data that has the selected record IN_ID from the TABLE_NAME:

ID STATUS IN_ID
111906
114406
114505
114606
114706

SQL Tries To Drop Tables That Don't Exist

Mar 14, 2008

When I am initializing a transactional replication from SQL 2005 to Oracle 10g, SQL tries to drop tables that don't exist. The properties option for the articles specifically states "if the name is in use:". The name is not in use, yet SQL still tries to drop non-existent tables, which causes the replication to halt. Anyone seen this before, or have any ideas what to do about it?

Thanks!

Tables Exist But Wont Drop

Symptoms: Both tables show up in sysobjects, sysindexes, and syscolumns. Both allow SELECT, sp_rename, and truncate, but just hang ISQL or the Enterprise Manager when I try to drop them. I ran a DBCC CheckTable on them with no errors reported. Any ideas??

Looping To Drop Temp Tables

Sep 10, 2007

Hello,

I have a query that's in development that uses several temp tables. In order to test the query repeatedly while it's being written I have the following code at the beginning to discard the temp tables. This allows the query can recreate the temp tables when called in the code.
if object_id('tempdb..#temp1') is not null drop table #temp1
if object_id('tempdb..#temp2') is not null drop table #temp2
if object_id('tempdb..#temp3') is not null drop table #temp3
if object_id('tempdb..#temp4') is not null drop table #temp4
if object_id('tempdb..#temp5') is not null drop table #temp5

Even though this works, it takes multiple lines of code. One of my queries has to drop 12 temp tables, thus 12 lines of code. I have been experimenting with looping the above as follows:

declare @n as nvarchar(3), @table as nvarchar(10)

set @n = 1
while @n <= 5 begin

set @table = '#temp'+@n

if object_id('tempdb..#temp'+@n) is not null drop table @table

set @n = @n + 1
end

Unfortunately, the above does not work. It gives this error message:
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Line 5: Incorrect syntax near '@table'.

I have also tried:
declare @n as nvarchar(3), @dropstmt as nvarchar(25)

set @n = 1
while @n <= 5 begin

set @dropstmt = 'drop table #temp'+@n

if object_id('tempdb..#temp'+@n) is not null @dropstmt

set @n = @n + 1
end

This does not work either. It gives this error message:
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Line 5: Incorrect syntax near '@dropstmt'.

Does anyone know how to get this to work?

Thanks.

Recovering Specific Tables Within A Database.

Mar 27, 2008

We currently have a company program in foxpro which inputs all of our information into its database. We are trying to shift from this to new updated software and a SQL database. There is a program we created which converts all the data from our old database into our new SQL database in preparation for our final move to the newer software. However, some of the tables in SQL were not taken directly from our old database but rather added in directly after our initial use of SQL, so when we ran our conversion software, a couple of specific tables were wiped because there was no equivilant within our old database. We already altered our conversion program to not touch those tables again, but is there any way to do a roll back or to find a backup of specific tables?

Find Out What Tables Contain A Specific Column

Jul 28, 2006

I want to write SQL that will search the tables in a database for a specific column, like this. For instance, I have a column "Unique_ID" that is in many of our tables (hundreds) but not in others and want to find out the tables it is in. It is always the first column.

I tried to find a system stored procdure to do this but couldn't and tried to create a script using the sysobjects and syscolumns tables in the Master db, but came to a roadblock because they don't seem to be related at all.

I would surely appreciate if someone else has already done this!

Thanks!

Script To Create/drop Tables, Indeces, FK ..etc

Apr 17, 2008

Greetings

I am thinking of creating a script that generates another script for creating/dropping tables, indeces, FK, views, stored procedures..etc in the right order in a specific database. I accept the fact this script is dangerous (like if I ran it on production server). But it sure will be very helpful when moving our SQL objects from development to qa and then to production. Is this worth it? Haev you see anything that generates such a thing?

Thanks

Drop Temporary Tables Whilst Connected ?

Jul 20, 2005

Just a quicky about temporarary tables. If using QA, when you create atemporary table, it gets dropped if you close the query. Otherwise youneed to state 'DROP TABLE myTable' so that you can re-run the querywithout the table being there.Sometimes, you can have quite lengthy SQL statements (in a series)with various drop table sections throughout the query. Ideally youwould put these all at the end, but sometimes you will need to dropsome part way through (for ease of reading and max temp tables etc...)However, what I was wondering is :Is there any way to quickly drop the temporary tables for the currentconnection without specifying all of the tables individually ? Whentesting/checking, you have to work your way through and run each droptable section individually. This can be time consuming, so beingnaturally lazy, is there a quick way of doing this ? When workingthrough the SQL, it's possible to do this quite a lot.ExampleSQL Statement with several parts, each uses a series of temporarytables to create a result set. At the end of a section, these worktables are no longer needed, so drop table commands are used. Thefinal result set brings back the combined results from each sectionand then drops those at the end.TIARyan
