Dynamic Update System
Jan 12, 2007
Hello folks!
I'm have some trouble with a dynamic update system! What I want to do:
1. I want to send in the code behind from any .aspx file values and parameters to a .vb class
2. Code (code behind in .aspx file):
1 gridupdate.updategrid("tblFeedbackA", e.CommandArgument, "locked=@locked", "@locked", "int", "0") 'Call de .vb class
2 getgridfeedback()
3. Code (code in .vb class)1 Public Shared Function updategrid(ByVal tblnaam As String, ByVal x As Integer, ByVal sql As String, ByVal parameters As String, ByVal sqltype As String, ByVal waarden As String 'translation: values)
2 Dim dynstr As String()
3 Dim dynstr2 As String()
4 Dim re As New Regex(",")
5 dynstr = re.Split(parameters)
6 Dim i As Integer
7 dynstr2 = re.Split(sqltype)
8 Dim dynstr3 As String()
9 dynstr3 = re.Split(waarden)
10
11 Dim sqlconn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("DataBase").ConnectionString)
12 Dim sql2 As String = "UPDATE " & HttpContext.Current.Session("prefix").ToString & tblnaam & " set " & sql & " where id=" & x
13 Dim sqlcmd As New SqlCommand(sql2, sqlconn)
14 sqlconn.Open()
15
16 For i = 0 To dynstr.Length - 1
17 sqlcmd.Parameters.Add(dynstr(i), CType("sqldbtype." & dynstr2(i), System.Data.SqlDbType))
18 sqlcmd.Parameters(dynstr(i)).Value = dynstr3(i)
19 Next
20 sqlcmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
21 sqlconn.Close()
22 Return Nothing
23 End FunctionAll I want to do is to add the sqlparameters dynamically, but I don't find a way to do this :).
Can you help me out?
Thanks!

As im diving into my new DBA role and reading as much as I can, I am a little confused on DMV's and system tables.
I've been reading through the book "SQL Server 2005 Bible", which has been very helpful. I tend to use it in conjunction with BOL whenever I come across something I want to learn more.
Last Friday, I tinkered around with DMV's, which was really cool, but I ran into something today that confused me.
Basically, it was finding out the recovery model for all the DB's on the server. The code in the book was:
SELECT [name], recovery_model_desc
FROM sys.databases;
Which turned exactly what it says it will.
however, I am confused.
I initially thought I needed to specify something in the "[name]" section, but realized, that is not the case.
My question is, why is that?
How do I know when to use [] around something?
I found this article:
http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3587906
I have been reading it.
I guess I am just really young and raw to T-SQL to know when to use the language corectly.
Is it due to the fact that the rules or syntax is a little different when using system tables?
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks.

In Dot net 2.0 we change using SQLDataSource to Conect with SQLDB.
Now for My case ,the Select SQL is dynamic when differnece user and parameters to the page, So if I want to Update the data input by user,then I must give Update/insert/delelte SQL to SQLDatasource's InsertCommand /UpdateCommand/DeleteCommand .
How to Generate the Insert/update/delete command for the SQLDataSource ? as in dot net 1.1 can use SQLCommandBuilder to generate it,but SQLCommandBuilder just support DataAdeptor not for SQLDataSource, Could any body know how to do it when the SelectCommand is dynamic and need to update data back to DB after edit?
thanks a lot.

Would it be possible to retrieve a "dynamically" named field from a table by using an input parameter?
For example, if a table has fields named Semester1, Semester2, Semester3, Semester4, and I was lazy and only wanted to create one stored procedure for all semesters could I do the following...
ALTER PROCEDURE u_sp_x
@semester int
AS
Select Semester@semester
From ThisTable
Just curious.

OK, I'm trying to add some audit type information to a set of tables in my database. This involves adding 2 columns and sticking some data into those two columns. The columns themselves are added successfully, but I'm having troubles sticking any data into them - I'm getting a lot of errors. What I want to do is put a single character code in one column, and a datetime in the second. Here's the SQL I'm trying...
Code Snippet
SELECT @SQL = N'UPDATE ' + QUOTENAME(@TableName) + ' ' +
N' SET TRANSACTION_CODE = ''' + @TxCode +
N''', EFFECTIVE_DATE = ''' + @TxDateTime + ''';'
SELECT @Params = N'@TxCode varchar(1), @TxDateTime datetime'
EXEC sp_executesql @SQL, @Params, @TxCode, @TxDateTime
But this errors out with:
Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 64
Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string.
I tried changing the datetime column to varchar, and CONVERT(varchar(30),@TxDateTime). That gets rid of the above error, but replaces it with the following (twice, I might add - one for each column?):
Msg 213, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Insert Error: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition.
Any help is appreciated - let me know if you need more info.

I have found out that my UPDATE statement throws an exception : "System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format."
For testing purpos I created a simple table in my SQL server containing columns "id" (identity) and "test"(varchar50) and populated 2 rows with data.
SELECTing from the database is ok, so the connection should be fine (connectionstring = server=localhost;database=test;user=sa;)
The update that throws the exception is : "UPDATE test SET test = 'updating' WHERE id = 1"
The same statement is ok in the SQL Query analyser - can anyone help on why this is not the correct format for the UPDATE?

Hi,
I rewrote my working Sql statement to prevent Sql Injections. I copied some code I used in another project but this time I can't get it to work, possibly because it's an update statement and not an Insert one, which I used before.
Sorry for the boring question, but does anyone have a clue what's wrong with the syntax?
Here's the original code (I changed the parameter names for clarity and security):
Dim conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyConnectionString").ConnectionString) Dim strSQL As String = "Update MyTable Set " & typ & num & " = '" & pname & "' WHERE personID = " & fid Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, conn)
Here's the code from codebehind:
Dim conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyConnectionString").ConnectionString) Dim strSQL As String = "Update MyTable Set (" & typ & num & ") Values (@" & typ & num & ") WHERE personID = " & fid Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(strSQL, conn) With cmd.Parameters .Add(New SqlParameter("@" & typ & num, pname)) End With TestLabel.Text = strSQL & " " & pname cmd.Connection.Open() cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() cmd.Connection.Close()
Here's my test message; first the sql, then the new string to be inserted:
Update MyTable Set (picturename) Values (@pname) WHERE personID = 2 2_adin.jpg
Here's my error code:
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '('. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '('.
Source Error:
Line 489: TestLabel.Text = strSQL & " " & pnameLine 490: cmd.Connection.Open()Line 491: cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()Line 492: cmd.Connection.Close()Line 493: End If
I could understand it if I'd get an error in VWD Express for using dynamic variables, but they work correctly in the text message so I'm clueless. Any help is deeply appreciated!

I'm trying to generate an update statement based off select statement results. A very basic example,
SELECT ListID FROM DListing WHERE Status = 2Results return 3 rows.
1234
2345
3456
How can I take those results and turn them into WHERE criteria for UPDATE statement?
Generated UPDATE statement should look like this.
UPDATE DListing SET Status = 1 WHERE ListID IN (1234,2345,3456)
I have started by creating a temp table to hold my SELECT results, but I don't know how to get those results into format for IN condition. Right now I get 3 UPDATE statements with 1 ListID in each IN condition.
CREATE TABLE #TempStatusUpdate(ListID INT)
INSERT INTO #TempStatusUpdate
SELECT ListID FROM DListing WHERE Status = 2
SELECT 'UPDATE DListing SET Status = 1 WHERE ListID IN (' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(30),ListID) + ') AND Status = 2'
DROP TABLE #TempStatusUpdate

I am having an issue with the File System Task.
I was wondering if there is a way to 'Move File' with the File System Task inside of a For Each Loop container but to dynamically set the Destination path variable.
Currently, this is what I have:
FileDestinationPath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileSourcePath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileNameAndLocation variable - set to blank
For Each Loop Container €“ Iterates through a folder C:TestFiles that has .txt files in it with dates in the file name. Ex: Test_09142006.txt. Sets the file path (fully qualified) to the Variable Mapping FileNameAndLocation.
Script Task (within For Each Loop, first step) €“ Sets the FileDestinationPath to the correct dated folder within C:TestFiles. For example, if the text files I want to move are for the 14th of September, it takes FileDestinationPath and appends the date folder to the end of it. The text files have a date in the file name (test_09142006.txt) and I am picking this apart (from FileNameAndLocation in the For Each Loop) to get the folder date. (dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value = dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value & €œ€? Month & €œ_€? & Day & €œ_€? & Year & €œ€?) which gives me €œC:TestFiles 9_14_2006€?.
File System Task (within For Each Loop, second step) €“ This is where the action is supposed to occur. I want it to take the FileDestinationPath and move the FileNameAndLocation file (from the For Loop) into this folder for each run.
Now as for my problem. I want this package to run everyday but it has to set the FileDestinationPath variable dynamically according to that day€™s date. Basically, how do I get this to work since I can€™t hard code the destination path variable from the start? I have the DestinationVariable on the File System Task set to the FileDestinationPath variable, after the script task builds it. However, using FileNameAndLocation as the SourceVariable on my File System Task tells me that the €œVariable €œFileNameAndLocation€? is used as a source or destination and is empty.€?
Let me know if I need to clarify further€¦...I may be missing something very simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi All,
I have a source files folder where the files generated everyday.
My goal is pick the latest file and copy this single file to another folder.
I used the Foreach loop container and got the latest file and stored the file name to a varible i.e. LatestFile
Then i want to use the File System Task to copy this to the destination.
On the beginning, I could not setup the Latestfile since I don't its name then, so when I setup the Source Connection property of the File system task, it is not allowed to leave the SourceVarible as blank!
Any suggestion?
Thanks

I am trying to incrementally update a Cube to get near real time data for the end users. Currently we have a Sql server agent Job that does a FullProcess on the Cube. The Cube consists of a single Measure group which is simply one named query containing inner joins of all the dimensions and fact tables in the underlying relational database. The end users have a lot to upload during the day and they would like us to refresh the cube (near real time) to ensure the adjustments are loaded so that they could reconcile their daily PnLs. We have a MeasureId added which is an auto increment column in the Measures table.
I am trying to schedule the below XMLA query in Sql server agent Job and schedule it to run every 15mins or even less (if possible). However it seems to be not working and keep throwing all sorts of errors.

'SELECT NON EMPTY {[Measures].[Maximum Measures Id]} ON COLUMNS FROM [GMDR]');

Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age,sex,race".
Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility
* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.
Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?
Thanks.

Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects,and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I'd prefer to determine this info with systemstored procs (ie sp_help, sp_helptex, sp_...etc) but will dip into thesystem tables if needed.Thanks,Dave

Hi Craig/Kamal,
I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.
Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.
We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.
I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.
Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.
Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.
I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

Hi,
I have a need to display on screen AND email a pdf report to email addresses specified at run time, executing the report with a parameter specified by the user. I have looked into data driven subscriptions, but it seems this is based on scheduling. Unfortunately for the majority of the project I will only have access to SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Production system is Enterprise), so I cannot investigate thoroughly.
So, is this possible using data driven subscriptions? Scenario is:
1. User enters parameter used for query, as well as email addresses.
2. Report is generated and displayed on screen.
3. Report is emailed to addresses specified by user.
Any tips on how to get this working?
Thanks

If anyone could confirm...
SQL Server 2000 SP4 to multiple SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition on PDAs. My DB on SQL2k is published with a single dynamic row filter using host_name() on my 'parent' table and also join filters from parent to child tables. The row filter uses joins to other tables elsewhere that are not published to evaluate what data is allowed through the filter.
E.g. Published parent table that contains suppliers names, etc. while child table is suppliers' products. The filter queries host_name(s) linked to suppliers in unpublished table elsewhere.
First initial sync with snapshot is correct and as I expected - PDA receives only the data from parent (and thus child tables) that matches the row filter for the host_name provided.
However - in my scenario host_name <--> suppliers may later be updated E.g. more suppliers assigned to a PDA for use or vice versa. But when I merge the mobile DB, the new data is not downloaded? Tried re-running snapshot, etc., no change.
Question: I thought the filters would remain dynamic and be applied on each sync?
I run a 'harmless' update on parent table using TSQL e.g. "update table set 'X' = 'X'" and re-sync. Now the new parent records are downloaded - but the child records are not!
Question: I wonder why if parent records are supplied, why not child records?
If I delete existing DB and sync new, I get the updated snapshot and all is well - until more data added back at server...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible (or not) to have dynamic filters run during second or subsequent merge?

if dbo.' + @FnNameYN + ' (' + convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) + ')) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0'
exec (@SQL)
GO
Obviously; @FnBit is not defined in @SQL so that execution will not work.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
So; is there a way to get a value out of a Dynamic SQL piece of code and get that value INTO my OUTPUT variable?
My many thanks to anyone who can solve this riddle for me.
Thank You!
Sigh: For now, it looks like I'll have a huge string of "IF" statements for each business rule function, as follows:
Hopefully a better solution comes to light.
------ Vertical Build1 - Std Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_14'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_14 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
------ Vertical Build1 - Scissor Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_15'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_15 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
.
.
.
etc.

Dear all,
I am stuck with a SSIS package and I can€™t work out. Let me know what steps are the correct in order to solve this.
At first I have just a Flat File Source and then Script Component, nothing else.
Error:
