Dynamic Variables?

Aug 9, 2005

Hey,

I have two tables of data, table1 and table2. In Table1, there is a
"id" field, a "name" field, and an e-mail field. In table2, there is an
"id" field, and paramters that belong to the certain "id". When I want
to create a new record, I want to make both of the entries at the same
time and have their "id"s match. I thought that the best way of doing
this was to create the data in table1, then get the "id" field of that
entry by way of matching the "name", and then use that id for the "id"
field value for the entry to table2. The problem is this... I don't
know how to collect the value of table1.id and store it in a variable
to be sent with the rest of the data to table2. This is what I tried:

-------------------------------

@name varchar(8000),
@email varchar(8000)

INSERT INTO table1 (name, email)
VALUES (@name, @email)

SELECT id
FROM table1
WHERE table1.name = @name

--------------------------------

>From there, I don't know what to do...[/color]

Dynamic SQL And Table Variables...?

Aug 23, 2004

Hello, all. I'm attempting to insert data into a table variable using dynamic SQL created at runtime.

However, with a Table variable, SQL server will not allow the EXEC method to be used in an INSERT statement.

How do I go about this?

Hello there,

i have been asked about a thing that, i think, is not possible. But maybe i am wrong.

question:
Is it possible to have a Stored Procedure in that the declaration of the variables is dynamic?
This means, can i get the variable name and the type of it from a database to create
a dynamic stored procedure that changes itself by firing a trigger.

Thanks for all oppinions and answers.

Variables In Dynamic SQL In A Stored Procedure

Aug 23, 2007

I am taking my first steps into stored procedures and I am working on a solution for efficiently paging large resultsets with SQL Server 2000 based on the example on 4Guys: http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/042606-1.shtml
The problem with my stored procedure is, is that it doesn't seem to recognize a variable (@First_Id) in my dynamic Sql. With this particular sproc I get the error message: "Must declare the scalar variable '@First_Id'"It seems to be a problem with 'scope', though I still can't yet figure out. Can anyone give me some hints on how to correctly implement the @First_Id in my stored procedure? Thanks in advance!
Here's the sproc:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.spSearchNieuws(@SearchQuery NVARCHAR(100) = NULL,@CategorieId INT = NULL,@StartRowIndex INT,        @MaximumRows INT,@Debug BIT = 0)ASSET NOCOUNT ONDECLARE @Sql_sri   NVARCHAR(4000),@Sql_mr    NVARCHAR(4000),@Paramlist NVARCHAR(4000),@First_Id  INT, @StartRow  INTSET ROWCOUNT @StartRowIndexSELECT @Sql_sri = 'SELECT @First_Id = dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsId FROM dbo.tblNieuwsWHERE 1 = 1'IF @SearchQuery IS NOT NULLSELECT @Sql_sri = @Sql_sri + ' AND FREETEXT(dbo.tblNieuws.Nieuwskop, @xSearchQuery)'              IF @CategorieId IS NOT NULLSELECT @Sql_sri = @Sql_sri + ' AND dbo.tblNieuws.CategorieId = @xCategorieId'SELECT @Sql_sri = @Sql_sri + ' ORDER BY dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsId DESC'SET ROWCOUNT @MaximumRows SELECT @Sql_mr = 'SELECT dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsId, dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsKop, dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsLink, dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsOmschrijving, dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsDatum,                 dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsTijd, dbo.tblNieuws.BronId, dbo.tblNieuws.CategorieId, dbo.tblBronnen.BronNaam, dbo.tblBronnen.BronLink, dbo.tblBronnen.BiBu, dbo.tblBronnen.Video,                dbo.tblCategorieen.CategorieFROM       dbo.tblNieuws INNER JOIN                dbo.tblBronnen ON dbo.tblNieuws.BronId = dbo.tblBronnen.BronId INNER JOIN                dbo.tblCategorieen ON dbo.tblNieuws.CategorieId = dbo.tblCategorieen.CategorieId AND                 dbo.tblBronnen.CategorieId = dbo.tblCategorieen.CategorieId         WHERE dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsId <= @First_Id          AND 1 = 1'               IF @SearchQuery IS NOT NULLSELECT @Sql_mr = @Sql_mr + ' AND FREETEXT(dbo.tblNieuws.Nieuwskop, @xSearchQuery)'           IF @CategorieId IS NOT NULLSELECT @Sql_mr = @Sql_mr + ' AND dbo.tblNieuws.CategorieId = @xCategorieId'     SELECT @Sql_mr = @Sql_mr + ' ORDER BY dbo.tblNieuws.NieuwsId DESC'IF @Debug = 1PRINT @Sql_mr  SELECT @Paramlist = '@xSearchQuery NVARCHAR(100),     @xCategorieId INT'EXEC sp_executesql   @Sql_sri, @Paramlist,     @SearchQuery, @CategorieIdEXEC sp_executesql   @Sql_mr, @Paramlist,     @SearchQuery, @CategorieId

BCP Task And Dynamic Import And Export Of A File Via Package Variables

Jul 3, 2006

I have a requirement to create many SSIS packages and no datatransform is required so the BCP task looks a good contender providing it can do both import & export

is it possible to parse the values in bold as package variables into the BCP task. If so how?

BULK INSERT ipcs_wvg.dbo.extract
FROM 'D:IPCSextract.csv'
WITH (FORMATFILE = 'D:ipcsqueryextract.xml');

Thanks in advance

Dave

I have a global database called ETL Configuration for all my SSIS packages that uses a single table. So I can create three global variables

USE [ETLConfiguration]
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SSIS Configurations](
[ConfigurationFilter] [nvarchar](255) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[ConfiguredValue] [nvarchar](255) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[PackagePath] [nvarchar](255) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[ConfiguredValueType] [nvarchar](20) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

Here is the data I would put in here

ConfigurationFilter = 'MySSISPackageName'

ConfiguredValue = 'D:IPCSextract.csv'

PackagePath = 'Package.Variables[User::gsFileName].Properties[Value]'

ConfiguredValueType = 'String'

ConfigurationFilter = 'MySSISPackageName'

ConfiguredValue = 'D:ipcsqueryextract.xml'

PackagePath = 'Package.Variables[User::gsFormatFile].Properties[Value]'

ConfiguredValueType = 'String'

ConfigurationFilter = 'MySSISPackageName'

ConfiguredValue = 'ipcs_wvg.dbo.extract'

PackagePath = 'Package.Variables[User::gsTableName].Properties[Value]'

ConfiguredValueType = 'String'

--Database connection info

ConfigurationFilter = 'MySSISPackageName'

ConfiguredValue = '.mssql2005'

PackagePath = 'Package.Connections[MyDatabaseName].Properties[ServerName]'

ConfiguredValueType = 'String'

ConfigurationFilter = 'MySSISPackageName'

ConfiguredValue = 'MyDatabaseName'

PackagePath = 'Package.Connections[MyDatabaseName].Properties[InitialCatalog]'

ConfiguredValueType = 'String'

I have looked at lots of options to automaticly create SSIS packages and have a hunch that that simple can be better: All these solutions look way to complex to what I want to achieve--

Transact SQL :: How To Insert Dynamic Column Values Of A Table To Variables

Jul 18, 2015

I am trying to insert different number of columns into variables.  This is what it does If I use a static columns.

declare @AccountType nvarchar(10)
declare @Total numerical(15,2)
declare @1 numerical (15,2)
declare @2 numerical (15,2)
declare @3 numerical (15,2)

#MonthtoDate  temp table is created using a dynamic pivot query.

Data looks like this :

Account Type  1 2
3 Total
Type 1 3
0 4 7
Type 2 5
7 1 13

Select @AccountType = AcctType , @Total = MonthToDate, @1 = [1], @2 = [2], @3 = [3]  from #MonthtoDate

However the issue is with [1],[2],[3] columns. Those are the number of days of the month. If today is the 3rd day of the month, we only need to show 3 days. So the final table has column [1],[2],[3] and @AccountType and @Total .

We want to run this query everyday to get the moth to date values.If we run this tomorrow, it will have 4 date columns [1], [2],[3],[4] and @AccountType and @Total .

Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor (Inner Variables Vs Outer Variables)

Sep 4, 2006

Hi,

I am not comfortable with DTS 2000 but I need to execute a encapsulated DTS 2000 package from a SSIS package. The real problem is when I need to pass SSIS variables to DTS 2000 package. The DTS 2000 package have 3 global variables that I can identify on " Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor - Inner Variables ". I believe the SSIS variables must be mapped on " Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor - OuterVariables ". How can I associate the SSIS variables(OuterVariables ) to "Inner Variables"? How can I do it? Much Thanks.

How To Design A Package With Variables So That I Can Run It By Dos Command Assigning Values To Variables?

Jan 24, 2006

Hi,

I would like to design a SSIS package, which have couple of variables. It loads a xls file specified in a variable [varExcelFileFullPath] .

I will run it by commands: exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /SQL ....' (pls see an example below).

It seems it does not get the values passed in for those variables. I deployed the package to a sql server.

are there any grammar errors here? I copied it from dtexecui. It worked inside Dtexecui not in dos command.

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /SQL "LoadExcelDB" /SERVER test /USER *** /PASSWORD ****

/MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING EW

/LOGGER "{6AA833A1-E4B2-4431-831B-DE695049DC61}";"Test.SuperBowl"

/Set Package.Variables[User::varExcelFileName].Properties[Value];"TestAdHocLayer"

/Set Package.Variables[User::varExcelWorkbookName].Value;"Sheet1$"

/Set Package.Variables[User::varExcelFileFullPath].Value;"D: estshareTestAdHocLayer.xls"

/Set Package.Variables[User::varDestinationTableName].Value;"FeaturesTmp"

/Set Package.Variables[User::varPreSQLAction].Value;"delete from FeaturesTmp"

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

SSRS 2005 - Email Report On Execution To Dynamic List With Dynamic Parameters = No Schedule

Nov 23, 2007

Hi,
I have a need to display on screen AND email a pdf report to email addresses specified at run time, executing the report with a parameter specified by the user. I have looked into data driven subscriptions, but it seems this is based on scheduling. Unfortunately for the majority of the project I will only have access to SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Production system is Enterprise), so I cannot investigate thoroughly.

So, is this possible using data driven subscriptions? Scenario is:

1. User enters parameter used for query, as well as email addresses.
2. Report is generated and displayed on screen.
3. Report is emailed to addresses specified by user.

Any tips on how to get this working?

Thanks

Merge Replication W/ Dynamic Row Filter - Not 'dynamic' After First Initial Sync?

May 2, 2007

If anyone could confirm...

SQL Server 2000 SP4 to multiple SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition on PDAs. My DB on SQL2k is published with a single dynamic row filter using host_name() on my 'parent' table and also join filters from parent to child tables. The row filter uses joins to other tables elsewhere that are not published to evaluate what data is allowed through the filter.

E.g. Published parent table that contains suppliers names, etc. while child table is suppliers' products. The filter queries host_name(s) linked to suppliers in unpublished table elsewhere.

First initial sync with snapshot is correct and as I expected - PDA receives only the data from parent (and thus child tables) that matches the row filter for the host_name provided.

However - in my scenario host_name <--> suppliers may later be updated E.g. more suppliers assigned to a PDA for use or vice versa. But when I merge the mobile DB, the new data is not downloaded? Tried re-running snapshot, etc., no change.

Question: I thought the filters would remain dynamic and be applied on each sync?

I run a 'harmless' update on parent table using TSQL e.g. "update table set 'X' = 'X'" and re-sync. Now the new parent records are downloaded - but the child records are not!

Question: I wonder why if parent records are supplied, why not child records?

If I delete existing DB and sync new, I get the updated snapshot and all is well - until more data added back at server...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible (or not) to have dynamic filters run during second or subsequent merge?

Mixing Dynamic SQL With Non-Dynamic In Stored Proc

Mar 24, 2007

I have a Stored Procedure for processing a Bill of Material.

One column on the Assembly Table is a Function Name that contains some busniess rules.

OK, now I'm doing a Proof of Concept and I'm stumped.

Huuuuh!

I will ultimately have about 100 of these things. My plan was using Dynamic SQL to go execute the function.

Note: The function just returns a bit.

So; here's what I had in mind ...

if isnull(@FnNameYN,'') <> ''
exec spinb_CheckYN @FnNameYN, @InvLineID, @FnBit = @FnBit output

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spinb_CheckYN
@FnNameYN varchar(50),
@InvLineID int,
@FnBit bit output
AS

declare @SQL varchar(8000)

set @SQL = '
if dbo.' + @FnNameYN + ' (' + convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) + ')) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0'

exec (@SQL)
GO

Obviously; @FnBit is not defined in @SQL so that execution will not work.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.

So; is there a way to get a value out of a Dynamic SQL piece of code and get that value INTO my OUTPUT variable?

My many thanks to anyone who can solve this riddle for me.
Thank You!

Sigh: For now, it looks like I'll have a huge string of "IF" statements for each business rule function, as follows:
Hopefully a better solution comes to light.

------ Vertical Build1 - Std Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_14'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_14 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END

------ Vertical Build1 - Scissor Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_15'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_15 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
.
.
.
etc.

Dynamic Source And Dynamic Destination

Apr 15, 2008

I have a requirment which i have partly accomplished , but could not get through completely

i have a file which comes in a standard format ending with date and seq number ,

suppose , the file name is abc_yyyymmdd_01 , for first copy , if it is copied more then once the sequence number changes to 02 and 03 and keep going on .

then i need to transform those in to new file comma delimited destination file with a name abc_yyyymmdd,txt and others counting file counting record abc_count_yyyymmdd.txt. and move it to a designated folder. and the source file is then moved to archived folder

what i have taken apprach is

script task select source file --------------------> data flow task------------------------------------------> script task to destination file

dataflow task -------------------------> does count and copy in delimited format

what is happening here is i can accomlish a regular source file convert it to delimited destination file --------> and move it to destination folder with script task .

but cannot work the dynamic pick of a source file.

Dynamic Columns For Dynamic SQL

Mar 9, 2007

I have created a dynamic SQL program that returns a range of columns (1 -12) based on the date range the user may select. Each dynamic column is month based, however, the date range may overlap from one year to another. Thus, the beginning month for one selection may be October 2005, while another may have the beginning month of January 2007.

Basically, the dynamic SQL is a derived Pivot table. The problem that I need to resolve is how do I now use this dynamic result set in a Report. Please keep in mind that the name of the columns change based on the date range select.

I have come to understand that a dynamic anything is a moving target!

Please advise.

Using Variables In T-SQL

Nov 2, 2000

I have this script:
.....
USE master
go

/* Get Name of Server & declare variables */
declare @sname varchar(30)
declare @db1 varchar(30)
declare @db2 varchar(30)
declare @db3 varchar(30)
declare @dbf1 varchar(30)
declare @dbf2 varchar(30)
declare @dbf3 varchar(30)

select @sname = rtrim(substring(srvname,5,30)) from sysservers

print 'The name of this server is: ' + @sname

Set @db1 = @sname + 'database1'
Set @db2 = @sname + 'database2'
Set @db3 = @sname + 'database3'
Set @dbf1 = @db1 + 'RL_log'
Set @dbf2 = @db2 + 'RL_log'
Set @dbf3 = @db3 + 'RL_log'

print @db1
print @dbf1
go

ALTER DATABASE @db1 MODIFY FILE (NAME = @dbf1, MAXSIZE = UNLIMITED)
go
ALTER DATABASE @db2 MODIFY FILE (NAME = @dbf2, MAXSIZE = UNLIMITED)
go
ALTER DATABASE @db3 MODIFY FILE (NAME = @dbf3, MAXSIZE = UNLIMITED)
go
.....

When I run it, I get the following errors:
.....
The name of this server is: KANSASCITY
KANSASCITYdatabase1
KANSASCITYdatabase1RL_log
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Line 2: Incorrect syntax near '@db1'.

Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '@db2'.
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '@db3'.
.....

Don't let the line numbers fool you. They refer to the number of lines since the last 'go' in the script. As you can see, the @db1 and @dbf1 variables are evaluating correctly.

WHAT I AM TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH:
I am attempting to change the setting of the Transaction Log to grow to fill up the entire disk. I do not wish to limit the space at this time. I have approximately 200 servers to manage and this script would be most useful in managing them, if it only worked.

Should I be using a different function to change the settings on the Transaction Log? Something other than ALTER DATABASE?

Thank you (in advance)

Using Variables In DDL

Hi

I think this is an easy question.

Is it possible to use a variable in a create database statement

i.e.

declare @db_name varchar(20)
select @db_name='new_db'

IF EXISTS (SELECT name FROM master.dbo.sysdatabases WHERE name = @db_name)
DROP DATABASE @db_name

CREATE DATABASE [@db_name] ON (NAME = @db_name, FILENAME = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLdataew_DB_Data.MDF' , SIZE = 300, FILEGROWTH = 10%) LOG ON (NAME = N'new_DB_Log', FILENAME = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLdataImport_Utility_DB_Log.LDF' , SIZE = 30, FILEGROWTH = 10%)
COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
GO

Also, if the above is possible, how can i pass a database name to the script if I am calling it from a batch file (using osql).

Thanks,

Variables In MS SQL

Apr 14, 2006

I have a MS SQL server DB which stores tables and queries and a MS Access DB which acts as an interface and stores Forms.
I am a MS Access Developre and this is my first MS Sql Server DB. I would like to know how can i pass a variable which is an object in a Form (In MS Access DB) to a query in MS SQL?

In MS Access( i mean mdb file which all tables, queries and forms are in one mdb file)it is very easy, for example if you would like to pass idfld from Form of frminfo to a query you can say: Where idname like " & Forms!frminfo!idfld , but it does not work on MS SQL.
Would you please tell me how can i use a variable in MS SQL query?

Thank
Ebi

DTS And Variables

Jan 29, 2007

I hope this is the place for questions about DTS.

I'm working on a DTS package that runs against development databases. At some point I'll move it to qual for testing, and I'll have to change names of servers and credentials for some of the connections. Can I do that with global variables? BOL aren't very helpful about this.

To be more specific. I'll have one "master" package that will be kicking off other packages. I've found in help that I can use dtsrun to pass variables - so I'm assuming that DBAs moving packages from one environment to another will adjust parameters passed by dtsrun to the "master" package. But how does the "worker" package reference global variable from the "master" package? And how do I reference global variable inside the "worker" package so that it's value is used for any of the properties I see when clicking on "disconnected properties" (like server name or user name)?

Is there some sort of tutorial out there that explains use of global variables?

Thanks in advance for any and all leads

Variables In SQL?

Jun 5, 2007

Basically I am creating a wizard(using forms) within a database to import client files and reformat them into the format that we need.

I have a form that list all 26 column headings that I need and tied to each column headings is a combo box that that lists the column headings from the imported client file.

I need to create a query that either appends it to an already formatted file or creates a new table with the column headings.

The problem is the field headings from the imported file change.
This is the sql that I used that doesn't work:

INSERT INTO Formatted_Data ( Field X )
SELECT Imported_Data.Forms![Import Data-3]![Combo33]
FROM Imported_Data;

Because Imported_Data.Forms![Import Data-3]![Combo33] is not recognized. I think if I could create a variable to replace the Forms! part then it would work but I do not know how to do this,

Thanks in advance to anyon that can help

Using Variables

Mar 14, 2007

Hi

I have a simple task flow which takes data from an external table and puts it into a SQL server table. In the SQL server table I have a column which flags the data source. I have set up a variable in the variable window to hold a constant which was the appropriate value for the column. I cannot see how to map the variable I have created to the column in my output table.

Not sure if variables do what I think they do, can anyone give me a simple overview, and point me in the right direction to add my constant into the output table.

Thanks in advance

ADG
