Dynamic Change Of The Column Size And Location Of A Matrix
Feb 24, 2007
I have a report that has a matrix. That matrix can have from 2 to 16 columns dependinging on the dataset result. Right now I am forced to place this matrix on the left side of the report and make a column layout pretty narrow. When dataset has more than 13 or so columns it looks OK, but when dataset has only two or three columns it looks weird with a matrix sitting in the left corner with two or three narrow columns and a lot of empty space to the right.
Is it possible programmatically change the width of the columns depending on their number in the dataset?
Is it possible to move the location of the matrix (horizontally) depending on the number of columns in the dataset?
Thank you,
Simon.

Ill start off by saying that I am an ASP.NET developer and I am self-taught in using SSRS2005. (quite poorly I might add) That being said I am having a problem with a report im building. This report has 10-12 different metrics I am reporting on and I have each of them displayed in their own matrix. The first matrix was created by the report wizard that launches when you add a new report.
To give you an overview of how I am setting up these reports I will describe the structure I am using on nearly all of the matrices. I am reporting on classes that are managed by my company and held at 3rd party locations. My matrix has the 3rd party location in the rows and the quarter the class was held is the column. Matrix setup looks like this:
________|_______Quarter____________
|MetricA|MetricB|MetricC|etc...
LocationA|
LocationB|
LocationC|
The problem Im having is this. All matrices that weren't created by the wizard don't grow dynamically. Say I have 2 quarters of data I am reporting on, Instead of having a column for quarter1 and quarter 2, the report generates separate matrices for each quarter. This is true for each matrix that I created using a matrix control from the toolbox. The matrix that was created by the wizard however, has dynamic columns that grow to the right as expected.
I am populating my datasets using Stored Procedures and the matrix that behaves normally uses a different dataset than the 4 others I have completed thus far which share a dataset.
I have looked everywhere I can think of for a checkbox or a property I need to adjust and I cant find one. Anyone have any ideas??

Hi
I am using one Publisher with many subscribers for Merge replication of a database.
I wanted to change size one column in a table. So I added a dummy column (through Filter column).
Copied data, dropped old column (through Filter column), added new column, copied data, and dropped dummy column.
On subscriber A, replication is OK. On subscriber B, I get the following message.
--------------------
Initializing
Connecting to Publisher 'REPLIC'
Retrieving publication information
Retrieving subscription information
A column was added to or dropped from the replicated table.
The schema script 'exec sp_repladdcolumn '[dbo].[Items]','C1',[NVARCHAR(1000) NULL], '%', 1' could not be propagated to the subscriber.
The schema script 'exec sp_repladdcolumn '[dbo].[Items]','C1',[NVARCHAR(1000) NULL], '%', 1' could not be propagated to the subscriber.
A column was added to or dropped from the replicated table.
--------------------
I made a new snapshot, reintialized subscription with upload, and tried to sychronize again.
But same message.
Question 1. Is there anyway to make replication?
Question 2. If not, can I at least upload data changes before dropping and making new publication?

I got the following code to add a column in a matrix with a variance:
IIF(IsNothing(Previous(Sum(Fields!Amount.Value))) or Fields!year.Value=First(Fields!year.Value,"Category") or Previous(Sum(Fields!Amount.Value))=0,nothing,
(
(Fields!Amount.Value)
/Previous(sum(Fields!Amount.Value))
)
)
This code works fine, except that the first row of the matrix shows an #error
This happens with each matrix where I use this expression. A warning emerges:
rsruntimeerrorinexpression the value expression for the textrun Textbox43.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]' contains an error.
Attempted to divide by zero.
The strange thing is that the part
Fields!year.Value=First(Fields!year.Value,"Category")
should prevent an error and I expect it to show 'nothing'
An screenshot of the table. (each color is a different category. Each row stands for 2013, 2014, 2015)
As you can see, all other 2013 rows show a blank cell, except the first row.

Does anyone know if this is possible:
I have an FTP server that will be receiving files. The directory
and file structure will be a folder with a client name (can be called
anything) and it will have files in it (these files will have the same
filenames as all the other directories. So I will have folder
JimmyDoe with files a.txt, b.txt, c.txt and I will have JonnyDue with
files a.txt, b.txt, and c.txt.
Now I'm trying to figure out a way to get that dynamic file location to
a DTS package so I can import all the data from the text file into a
SQL server. The way the SQL server will be set up is that each
Folder from the FTP site will be a separate Database and each file will
1:1 with a table with the same name..
My biggest issue is figuring out a way to tell the DTS package the file
location to pull all those files and then importing them to the proper
database.
I'm not limiting the solution to DTS packages so if .NET can be
incorporated to make it easier then so be it. But keep in mind I
can have up to 200 folders with 12 - 20 text files ranging from
hundreds of rows of data to many thousands of rows. And the
package needs to be ran twice a day so time/performance is an
issue.
To recap: Need DTS package that uses Dynamic file source and transfers data to Dynamic database destination.
(And I'll write slow VB.NET code to handle this before I create/manage 200+ DTS packages as a solution)
Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Hello
The default location where db's are created is almost full.
Is there any way to change the default location where the .mdf and .ldf are created when I create a new db? I know I can do this when I create a new db and go select where I want it to be, but can I make it default to a different directory automatically so no human intervention is needed?

In SQL2000, there's an option to change the location of the template folder. This allows me to create a customized set of templates on a network folder and have all the developers reference the centralized location. Can the same be done in SQL2005 and how would I go about doing so?
Thanks.

If I can get around taking a few databases offline, I'd like to. I need to get logfiles on a lower-capacity drive.
Ideally, I wouldn't like to have multiple logfiles swimming around. But, I was thinking that if I created a second logfile, and then backed up the transaction log, I might be able to remove the first logfile?
The other thought I had, was creating a second logfile, and then turning off autogrow on the first log.
Maybe there is a better solution? Maybe neither of these will work?
Thoughts?

Hi,
I have developed a SSIS package on my desktop and the package involves loading of XML data into a database. The XML does not have inline schema and I generated the XSD file from SSIS.
I used Derived Column and Data Conversion to load the data into the database.
Now, i want to migrate the package to a server. Now, when i change the path of the XML and XSD files, all the tasks show error such as
"Input column 'Last_Updated' (4433) has lineage id 3586 that was not previously used in data flow...."
Why is this so? I am using the same XML/XSD files after i moved to the server.
Please advice a fix for this?

Vikram

Hi,
Is there a way to dynamically make report header and footer fields change location (or size)? I have many matrix reports that grow in width and then the header and footers do not look good.
Another example is I have a line that is in the header...I would like this to grow to the width of the report, which again is not static on a matrix report.
Thanks.

I need to display 12 months dynamically in columns of a matrix report, starting with the current MMM, yy - 3 in the first column, current MMM, yy and incrementing by 1 month in columns 2-12.
For example a report that would run on today's MM, yy (5/2007) would look something like this:
MAR-07, APR-07, MAY-07, JUN-07, JUL-07, AUG-07, AUG-07, SEP-07, OCT-07, NOV-07, DEC-07, JAN-08, FEB-08
(Col 1 - Col 12 separated by commas)
How do I do this in a matrix report column?

Hi Craig/Kamal,
I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.
Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.
We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.
I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.
Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.
Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.
I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

Hi,
We have a matrix report which displays columns in a default sorting order. This report columns vary dynamically depending on the user input.
e.g. If user wants to see the report for column Alfa, Beta , Gama then a report will be genarted with column Alfa, Beta , Gama sorted in alphabetical order.
Site
%Risk
Alfa
Beta
Gama
X
2
1
2
3
Y
10
4
5
6
However the users want the Columns to be sorted in the order which they provide the inputs e.g. if the user entered Gama, Alfa, Beta the report should display the columns in the same order instead of applying the default sorting order.
Site
%Risk
Gama
Alfa
Beta
X
2
3
1
2
Y
10

Any thoughts on ways to achieve this in SSRS matrix report would really help.
Cheers,
Viv

Hello Everyone,
I have been tasked with creating a report using Reporting Services from an excel report that was wasting a lot of manual effort and time. I have searched boards and I am having the hardest time trying to find a way to do the following in Reporting Services within a Matrix:
Spring Summer Fall
2005 2006 2007 %Change 2005 2006 2007 % Change 2005 2006 2007 %Change
Reponses 219 310 410 100 100 200 300 100 2000 3000 200 -2800
FRC% 102% 103% 200% 97% 23% 25% 10% -15% 20% 32% 10% -22%
===========================================================================================
I can not find out how to do a percent change (the column in red) subtracting just the final or most right two columns of the resulting matrix columns, not an average or some other function over the entire row....
Please help, I know others have had the same issue...
Thank You,
