Dynamic Data Elements For A Data Collection Application

Sep 20, 2005

What is the better table design for a data collection application.
1. Vertical model (pk, attributeName, AttributeValue)
2. Custom columns (pk, custom1, custom2, custom3...custom50)

Since the data elements collected may change year over year, which
model better takes of this column dynamicness

Disappearing Data Elements In The Header

Apr 4, 2007

I have created a number of reports where I need to display database elements in the Header record. I have been using the reportitems feature to get them to display there. When I preview the report the header looks fine; however, when the report is exported to pdf or printed out the header information completly disappears.

Any suggestions would be great.

SSIS - Handling Recursive XML Elements In Data Flow Task

May 22, 2008

Hi All,
I have a requirement here to import data from XML file to SQL Database. The XML schema contains of various elements and one of the element is recursive ie. Parameter node contains parameter node within it and it can have n number of iterations. I have given the sample schema below:

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Parameter">

<xs:complexType>

<xs: sequence>

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="ID" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Description" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Type" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Parameter">
<xs:complexType>

<xs: sequence>

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="ID" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Description" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Type" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Parameter">
<xs:complexType>

<xs: sequence>

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="ID" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Description" type="xs: string" />

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Type" type="xs: string" />

</xs: sequence>

</xs:complexType>

</xs:element>

<xs:element minOccurs="0" name="Parameter">
...............

</xs: sequence>

</xs:complexType>

</xs:element>

</xs: sequence>

</xs:complexType>

</xs:element>

But all the nodes contain the data which has to be imported to a single table dbo.Parameters. I cannot use Union ALL since i dont know how many iterations I will have in the file. Is there any way to do this operation in Data Flow Task using XML Source? Can anyone help me on this?

Thanks,
Dhileep

Data Collection From Many To One Servers

Mar 7, 2008

I need to feed head office sql server with the data from regional servers. Servers are spread through all continents
Data input done locally on Head office server as well and plus need to ship data from other servers.
So clarify this - Head office server is not standby one. Mirroring is out of the picture, I think..
Initially, I thought ship a log every 15 min and restore on Head office server but is this going to create an issue for the local data processing?

Any bright ideas welcome!

Transact SQL :: FOR XML To Write Data With Carriage Return / Line Feed At End Of Elements?

Sep 30, 2015

I am trying to use FOR XML under SQL Server 2014 to write out a large XML data set. I want it to look like

<CVS_Member_Add_Change>
    <RecordType>3</RecordType>
    <Carrier>1266</Carrier>
    <MultiBirthCode>0000000</MultiBirthCode>
    <MemberType></MemberType>

[Code] ....

That's how it looks when you click on the results of a small subset of the query.  Just what I want.  Unfortunately when you try to right click and save it you get

<dataroot><CVS_Member_Add_Change><RecordType>3</RecordType><Carrier>1266</Carrier<MultiBirthCode>0000000</MultiBirthCode><MemberType></MemberType<LanguageCode>1</LanguageCode><DURFlag></DURFlag><DURKey></DURKey><SocialSecurityNumber>000000000</SocialSecurityNumber</CVS_Member_Add_Change>

Everything being on one line blows up the translator application that reads the data.

The FOR XML statement copied out of the query is below.

FOR XML RAW ('CVS_Member_Add_Change'), ROOT('dataroot'), ELEMENTS
GO

Is there a way in the T-SQL to force it to break lines neatly?

Is there a way to force it to a specific file name or directory?

Transact SQL :: Parse Unknown Number Of Data Elements To Multiple Lines

Jun 11, 2015

We are using a table that may give 1 to and unknown number of data elements (ie. years) .   How can we break this to show only three years in each row.  Since we don't know the number years we really won't know the number of rows needed.  Years are stored in their own table by line.

car make year1 year2 year3
A   volare 1995 1996 1997
a   volare 1997   1998   1999
b toyat  1965    1966   1968

We can pivot out the first X# but we don't know how many lines so we don't know how many rows we will be creating.

Or it can be something different? Last two weeks what I checked was Read/Write MB/s to tempdb increasing progressively.

One time it was about 20MB/sec

After it was reseting and again 1MB/sec..

What I checked , External company which install SQL Server made one file for tempdb, next week or during breaktime(it will be possible), I would like make 8files next weekend work.

Now I saw that TempDB mdf was still increased, but using was just 8-10%

Realtime Data Collection - How Do I Put SQL7 In Charge?

Feb 6, 2000

I have a product where we feed an SQL 7 DB data collected from Manufacturing. Presently, the Data transport Program is in charge of getting prepared data from machines and inserting into the DB. This design assumes SQL7 is always ready and able - which is not true due to customer queries or backups or etc. consuming resources. There is a low level buffer in system at manufacturing level if transport dies, but transport is ignorant of SQL distress, so keeps hammering DB's frontdoor. I'm looking for help in putting SQL server in charge of allowing data in - when resources are adequate. Seems I need a function that can determine server stress QUICKLY to forestall transport program and a buffer for records at the transport layer. Anyone know / done a system where SQL server CHECKS for waiting records or OK's an external program to send until told to stop? What indicates (reliably) low server resources? Anyone ever used MSMQ?

SQL 2012 :: Data Collection Fails For 1 Of 4 AlwaysOn AG Groups

Jun 5, 2014

I have a two node SQL 2012 AlwaysOn HADR cluster (v11.0.3412) with 4 availability groups configured. The AG groups are set to synchronous mode and the secondary is not readable (we do not want the synchronous replica readable so we do not risk any reads causing contention so we maintain fast performance).

On the secondary we are getting a persistent failure with the Data Collector job called Collection_Set_3_Upload. The failure occurs within the second job step. That job step is executing the following command:

dcexec -u -s 3 -i "$(ESCAPE_DQUOTE(MACH))$(ESCAPE_DQUOTE(INST))"
The error message is as follows:

Log Job History (collection_set_3_upload) Step ID 2 Server CLUSTERNODE2
Job Name collection_set_3_upload
Step Name collection_set_3_upload_upload
Duration 00:00:07

[Code] ....

I know I can prevent this error message by enabling readable secondaries, but we do not want this.

I have tried stopping the data collection jobs and purging the cache directory but to no avail. It will succeed the first time then persistently fail again with the same message every time after that.

In addition, if I set the one failing AG group to readable secondary the job succeeds. So that means that 3/4 work fine, only this one is having an issue.

SQL 2012 :: Data Collection And Daylight Saving Time

Oct 26, 2015

Last weekend many of our severs had a failed job "collection_set_3_upload". The error that occured is: "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_ active_ sessions_ and_requests'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'snapshots.active_sessions_and_requests'. The duplicate key value is (2824333, 2015-10-25 02:54:49.7630000 +02:00, 1)."Last weekend we happened to go from summer time to winter time. i.e. the clock passed 02:00 - 3:00 two times during this night.

I.e. there is a bug in the Data Collector component that collects data for the Management Data Warehouse: it uses local time instead of UTC. I've created a Connect item to report it to Microsoft.URL...how do you get your process running again? the job will no longer run because it will every 5 minutes keep on trying to upload the conflicting data for the 2nd 2:00 - 3:00 period. I've only found one solution: get rid of all data collected but not yet uploaded.

You do this by stopping the Collection set (in SSMS go to Object Explorer -> <the server you want to fix> -> Management -> Data Collection -> System Data Collection Sets. Right click "Query Statistics" and select "Stop Data Collection Set").Then you delete the cached results from the sql server machine's harddisk. These cached results are in files located in a Temp folder on the sql machine itself, inside the AppData folder for the service account SQL Server Agent is running under. Usually it will be something like: c:Users<sql agent service account>AppDataLocalTemp.

Inside this folder delete all files that have 'QueryActivity' in their name. You'll loose all data collected since the start of wintertime, but at least your data collection process will work again.After this you can start the Collection set again by right clicking it and select "Start Data Collection Set". Every 5 minutes the data will be summarised and uploaded into your management data warehouse.

Data Collection On Production Server To Capture Growth Rates

Mar 18, 2015

I setup data collection on a production server to capture growth rates.

When I run the dis usage report, it shows a daily growth rate of over 500 megs. This seems excessive to me.

As a troubleshooting step I then ran sp_space used and got these results:

database_namedatabase_sizeunallocated space

reserved data index_size unused
265345488 KB164385384 KB99826072 KB1134032 KB

What should my next steps be to try and determine why there is so much growth? And isn't the index size rather large?

Set The Data Source Of Data Flow From External Application (C#)

Jan 11, 2006

I am new to SSIS programming, so bear with me if my question seems naive to you gurus. I have a situation that needs to set the data source for a data flow from external .NET application ('external' means that the application will run on different process than the SSIS). I am trying to set the data source on which the data flow works from my C# application in a DataSet format. Ideal solution is not to save the DataSet to any file on harddisk (I know that will work, but has the overhead of writing, reading and managing the temp file). What I want to achive is that the business logic of picking data for SSIS Data Flow to process is controlled inside my C# application, the Data Flow just does what it does best - Transformation. Have any of you successfully done this before?. Thanks!

Error: The External Metadata Column Collection Is Out Of Synchronization With The Data Source Columns

Apr 17, 2007

Hello,

I have a SSIS package with a Data Flow task. This task transfers the data from SQL Server 2000 to a table in SQL Server 2005.

I deployed and tested this package on the Test Server. Then put this package in a job and executed it - Works fine.

On the production server- If I execute the package through DTEXECUI, it works fine. But when I try executing it through a job- the job fails and it gives me following error:

Description: The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The "external metadata column "T_FieldName" (82)" needs to be removed from the external metadata column collection....

What I don't understand is, why are there no errors displayed when I execute the package through DTEXECUI.

Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.

Thanks.

Dim RetValue As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("RetValue", SqlDbType.Int)

RetValue.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

Dim auIDIN As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("@au_idIN", SqlDbType.VarChar, 11)

auIDIN.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input

Dim NumTitles As SqlParameter = testCMD.Parameters.Add("@numtitlesout", SqlDbType.Int)

NumTitles.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output

auIDIN.Value = "213-46-8915"

PubsConn.Open()

Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = testCMD.ExecuteReader()

Console.WriteLine("Book Titles for this Author:")

Do While myReader.Read

Console.WriteLine("{0}", myReader.GetString(2))

Loop

myReader.Close()

Console.WriteLine("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value))

Console.WriteLine("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value))

End Sub

End Class

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The original article uses the code statements in pink for the Console Applcation of VB.NET. I do not know how to print out the output of ("Book Titles for this Author:"), ("{0}", myReader.GetString(2)), ("Return Value: " & (RetValue.Value)) and ("Number of Records: " & (NumTitles.Value)) in the Windows Application Form1 of my VB 2005 Express. Please help and advise.

Data Model For A Web Messaging Application.

Jul 20, 2005

I need to develop an internal messaging sub-system that is similar toa web mail application but without SMTP support (e.g message routesare confined to the webapp domain). The requirements are rathersimple: Each user (e.g mailbox) can view incoming messages and hisoutgoing messages. Message quota is defined as the sum of all incomingand outgoing messages per userand tracked in the users' row (Users table – log_TotalMessages). Thequota is enforced by the business logic layer and not by the DB.I am considering the following data model for the storage component,and would appreciate community feedback:Table layout for incoming and outgoing messages************************************************CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Messages] ([MessageID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL , // The messageID[RecipientID] [int] NOT NULL , // The userid ('Users'Table)[SenderID] [int] NOT NULL , // The userid ('Users'Table)[GroupID] [uniqueidentifier] NULL , // Only assigned if theuser "replyed" to an incoming message[SubmitDate] [smalldatetime] NOT NULL , // the date of themessage[DeleteBySender] [bit] NOT NULL , // Since I want to maintain onlyone copy of each message I mark a message "to be deleted" and deleteonly if both are true.[DeleteByRecipient] [bit] NOT NULL ,[SeenByRecipient] [bit] NOT NULL , // Used to "highlight" unreadmessages[Subject] [tinyint] NOT NULL , // Subject is derived from a fixedlist[MessageText] [varchar] (2000) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_ASNOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY]CREATE INDEX [Messages_RecipientID_IDX] ON[dbo].[Messages]([RecipientID]) ON [PRIMARY]CREATE INDEX [Messages_SenderID_IDX] ON [dbo].[Messages]([SenderID])ON [PRIMARY]/* Send Message */CREATE PROCEDURE SendMessage (@IN_RecipientID int,@IN_SenderID int,@IN_GroupID uniqueidentifier,@IN_Subject tinyint,@IN_MessageText varchar(2000),@OUT_ERRCODE tinyint OUTPUT)ASBEGIN TRANSACTION SendMessageTransINSERT INTO Messages(RecipientID,SenderID,GroupID,SubmitDate,Subject,MessageText)VALUES (@IN_RecipientID,@IN_SenderID,@IN_GroupID,GETDate(),@IN_Subject,@IN_MessageText)UPDATE UsersSET log_NumberOfNewMessages = log_NumberOfNewMessages + 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @IN_RecipientIDUPDATE UsersSET log_TotalMessages = log_TotalMessages + 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @IN_SenderIDSAVE TRANSACTION SendMessageTransSET @OUT_ERRCODE = @@errorIF (@@error <> 0)BEGINROLLBACK TRANSACTION SendMessageTransENDELSEBEGINCOMMIT TRANSACTION SendMessageTransEND/* ReadMessage */CREATE PROCEDURE ReadMessage (@IN_MessageID int,@IN_RecipientID int,@OUT_ERRCODE tinyint OUTPUT)ASBEGIN TRANSACTION ReadMessageTransSELECT MessageText FROM Messages WHERE MessageID = @IN_MessageIDUPDATE Messages SET SeenByRecipient = 1 WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageIDUPDATE Users SET log_NumberOfNewMessages =log_NumberOfNewMessages - 1 WHERE usr_AccountNo = @IN_RecipientIDSAVE TRANSACTION ReadMessageTransSET @OUT_ERRCODE = @@errorIF (@@error <> 0)BEGINROLLBACK TRANSACTION ReadMessageTransENDELSEBEGINCOMMIT TRANSACTION ReadMessageTransEND/* Delete Message */CREATE PROCEDURE DeleteMessage (@IN_MessageID int,@IN_DeleteIncomingMessage bit,@IN_DeleteOutgoingMessage bit,@OUT_ERRCODE tinyint OUTPUT)ASBEGIN TRANSACTION DeleteMessageTransDECLARE @Recipient intDECLARE @Sender intSET @Recipient = (SELECT RecipientID FROM Messages WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageID)SET @Sender = (SELECT SenderID FROM Messages WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageID)IF (@IN_DeleteIncomingMessage = 1)BEGINIF((SELECT DeleteBySender FROM Messages WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageID) = 1)BEGINDELETE FROM Messages WHERE MessageID = @IN_MessageIDUPDATE Users SET log_TotalMessages = log_TotalMessages - 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @RecipientENDELSEBEGINUPDATE Messages SET DeleteByRecipient = 1 WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageIDUPDATE Users SET log_TotalMessages = log_TotalMessages - 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @RecipientENDENDIF (@IN_DeleteOutgoingMessage = 1)BEGINIF((SELECT DeleteByRecipient FROM Messages WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageID) = 1)BEGINDELETE FROM Messages WHERE MessageID = @IN_MessageIDUPDATE Users SET log_TotalMessages = log_TotalMessages - 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @SenderENDELSEBEGINUPDATE Messages SET DeleteBySender = 1 WHERE MessageID =@IN_MessageIDUPDATE Users SET log_TotalMessages = log_TotalMessages - 1WHERE usr_AccountNo = @SenderENDENDSAVE TRANSACTION DeleteMessageTransSET @OUT_ERRCODE = @@errorIF (@@error <> 0)BEGINROLLBACK TRANSACTION DeleteMessageTransENDELSEBEGINCOMMIT TRANSACTION DeleteMessageTransEND/* ListIncomingMessages */CREATE PROCEDURE ListIncomingMessages (@IN_RecipientID int)ASSELECT SenderID, MessageID, SubmitDate FROM Messages WHERE RecipientID= @IN_RecipientID AND DeleteByRecipient = 0 ORDER BY SubmitDate DESC/* ListOutgoingMessages */CREATE PROCEDURE ListOutgoingMessages (@IN_SenderID int)ASSELECT RecipientID, MessageID, SubmitDate FROM Messages WHERE SenderID= @IN_SenderID AND DeleteBySender = 0 ORDER BY SubmitDate DESCThanks in advance!-Itai

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Query Regarding Update Data Using Application

Apr 7, 2014

SELECT ContactID,FirstName,MiddleName,LastName,Description FROM Contact

Contact table contains 4 columns as explained. in the application there is one tab called Contact where it displays Above information and description is non editable.Now the new requirement has come user can update the description information and save information in a new column say 'Description1'. that means new column needs to be added in the db and also necessary changes needs to be done at the application side

For ex :SELECT ContactID,FirstName,MiddleName,LastName,Description,Description1 FROM Contact

Now when user views the contact table it should display description info by default from 'description' table.If he edits he should see edited data from 'description1' table.the logic should if updated data is there display that data from 'description1' table other wise display from 'description' table
