Is it possible to write dynamic sql on scalar function and assign the value to return value? I like some thing like below but it is not working...
Thanks

SQL Server 2012 :: Dynamic Return Type In A Function

Mar 3, 2015

I have created a function that will check whether the data is null or not. If its null then it will display that as No data else it will display the original value. Below is the function

GO
Object: UserDefinedFunction [dbo].[fnchkNull] Script Date: 3/4/2015 12:01:58 PM ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

[code]...

The code is working good. However i want the return type to be dynamic. If the data type supplied is integer then i want to return a integer value like 0 if its null. if the data value is varchar then i want to return 'No Data'.

'Return' Statement In A Function,Get,or Operator Must Return A Value....Question

Aug 28, 2007

I'm a Reporting Services New-Be.

I'm trying to create a report that's based on a SQL-2005 Stored Procedure.

I added the Report Designer, a Report dataset ( based on a shared datasource).

When I try to build the project in BIDS, I get an error. The error occurs three times, once for each parameter on the stored procedure.

I'll only reproduce one instance of the error for the sake of brevity.

[rsCompilerErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the query parameter 'UserID' contains an error : [BC30654] 'Return' statement in a Function, Get, or Operator must return a value.

I've searched on this error and it looks like it's a Visual Basic error :

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8x403818(VS.80).aspx

My guess is that BIDS is creating some VB code behind the scenes for the report.

I can't find any other information that seems to fit this error.

The other reports in the BIDS project built successfully before I added this report, so it must be something specific to the report.

BTW, the Stored Procedure this report is based on a global temp table. The other reports do not use temp tables.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks,

Dynamic SQL && Parameter Inside A SP Not Working

Nov 5, 2006

When I run the query below on my DB, it gives the following error:
Server: Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Procedure partstlist ...Error converting data type varchar to float.
Only after I replace the      " + @d + " section with a float numnber such as 39020.5 does it work fineIt's reported that my temporary table named #tbl doesn't exist within the scope of the environment that the EXEC(UTE) command operates.Someone said that I couldn't combine dynamic SQL and temporary tables or table variables...and that I would have to use a global temp table "##tbl" or a permanent table.
So here I have appearantly a "DYNAMiC SQL & TEMPORARY TABLE" problem. That's sure.
But I don't have much knowledge and experience with SQL tables and have difficulty forming a global temp table "##tbl" or a permanent table.and I have to employ the datetime variable dynamically @d inside the Dynamic SQL string.
So what kind of a code should I use here to properly combine Dynamic SQL string with my dynamic datetime variable? I'd be grateful if you could post your code suggestions so that I can try them on my DB ..
alter PROCEDURE partslist@no INT,@dt DATETiMEASDECLARE @s VARCHAR(5000)DECLARE @d floatSET @d = CONVERT (float, @dt2)create TABLE #tbl(pageindex int IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY , prt_name varchar(50), prt_country varchar(50) , prt_date smalldatetime, partID int , prt_cat varchar(50),prt_product_type nvarchar(10), producer_company nvarchar(50), producer_city nvarchar(50), prt_released DATETIME, dvalue float, datevalue varchar(26) )BEGiNSET ANSI_WARNINGS OFFSET ROWCOUNT @noSELECT @s = 'INSERT INTO #tbl SELECT prt_name, Countries.Val AS ''prt_country'' , prt_date, partID , partsCategories.Val AS ''prt_cat'' , partsProductTypes.Val AS ''prt_product_type'' , producers.producer_company AS ''producer_company'' , producers.producer_city AS ''producer_city'' ,  prt_released , CONVERT (float, prt_released) , CONVERT (varchar(26) , prt_released, 109) FROM producer_parts  JOIN partsProductTypes ON (producer_parts.prt_product_type = partsProductTypes.ID) JOIN partsCategories ON (producer_parts.prt_cat = partsCategories.ID)JOIN Countries ON (producer_parts.prt_country = Countries.ID) JOIN producers ON (producer_parts.producerID = producers.producerID) WHERE prt_visible = 1  AND CONVERT (float, prt_released) > ' + @d + ' AND CONVERT (float, prt_released) < 39025.5ORDER BY prt_released DESC SELECT * FROM  #tbl'EXEC (@s)SET ROWCOUNT 0ENDGO partslist 10 , '10.10.2006 10:10:10' -- This is just to test the SP.
This code may not be syntatically correct, it's a re-edited version of my code which works fine in my DB.

Carriage Return Inside A Field Of Text Data Type?

Nov 24, 2004

how can i insert a carriage return when i update the field?

say i want to put the following inside a field:
firstline
secondline

how can i update/insert a column to have a return carriage inside it?
UPDATE table SET column = 'firstline secondline'

the reason i want this is because when using a program (Solomon, by microsoft, purchasing software) to grab a field out of the database and when it displays that field in the programs textbox, i want it to be displayed on two separate lines

i tried doing
UPDATE table SET column = 'firstline' + char(13) 'secondline'

but when in the solomon program, it displays an ascii character between firstline and secondline like: firstline||secondline

Need Info About Dynamic Reporting (Read Problem Statement, Inside)

Jun 21, 2007

Hi All!

I have a specific requirement.

I have to generate a report on the fly.
The display fields, parameters and sort conditions would be user specified at run time in a ASP.NET web form. There will be a superset of the display, filter and sort fields out of which the user cans select one or more.

From the web form, i am taking these three parts as three strings and sending them as parameters to a Stored Procedure. The Stored Procedure will read each string, and identify what are the individual fields and generates the result accordingly.

So here my requirement is that Reporting Services must read the Stored Procedure, create a dataset and even create the User Interface all at run-time as we do not know what fields are displayed at design time. The Headers for each field come from the Stored Procedure. I have to show the report based on what are the fields in the Stored procedure at that instance of time.

I hope i have explained very clearly.

I would be grateful for your contributions.

Thanks

Problems With ABS() Function Inside Sub Query (within WHERE-Clause)

May 28, 2008

Hello,

when trying to execute the following query with SQL CE 3.1 and OLEDB on WM2003:

SELECT C.Panel_Id, C.Panel_Tier, C.Panel_Type, C.Panel_No, C.Panel_Position
FROM tblMeasurements AS A, tblAssignment_Ant_Pan AS B, tblPanels AS C
WHERE (A.Measurement_No=?) AND (A.Antenna_No = B.Antenna_No) AND (B.Panel_Id = C.Panel_Id) AND C.Panel_Position in
(SELECT Panel_Position FROM tblMeasurement_Results
WHERE (Measurement_No=?) AND ABS(Measurement_Value) BETWEEN ? AND ?
GROUP BY Panel_Position)

i get this error returned:
0x80040E1DL -- DB_E_UNSUPPORTEDCONVERSION -- Requested conversion is not supported.

I don't know where inside the sql string a conversion is necessary/fails.
Surprisingsly when i modify the sql statement a little, it is executed WITHOUT ERRORS:

SELECT C.Panel_Id, C.Panel_Tier, C.Panel_Type, C.Panel_No, C.Panel_Position
FROM tblMeasurements AS A, tblAssignment_Ant_Pan AS B, tblPanels AS C
WHERE (A.Measurement_No=?) AND (A.Antenna_No = B.Antenna_No) AND (B.Panel_Id = C.Panel_Id) AND C.Panel_Position in
(SELECT Panel_Position FROM tblMeasurement_Results
WHERE (Measurement_No=?) AND Measurement_Value BETWEEN ? AND ?
GROUP BY Panel_Position)

The only difference between the 2 statements is the ABS() function inside the sub query.

More surprisingly, with the query analyser on the PDA i can execute both statements fine. I am absolutely confused now where i have to search for the mistake.

I would appreciate it very much if someone out there knows an answer or a hint and could tell me.

With kind regards,
Andre

Permission-problem On Simple Query Inside CLR Function

Aug 17, 2007

I have created an assembly with permission set safe, and a function inside the assembly.
The function reads data from the same SQL Server as it is running inside. For connection I use the "Context connection = true", and the function has the SystemDataAccessKind attribute set to Read.

However when I execute my CLR function I get an error saying something like:
"The request for permission of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission...... failed"

I do, as the login user, have been granted the necessary rights, so I don't believe this is the answer to the error.
And my .dll is also signed.

Has this something to do with writing something a config file?
I have had simular problems with reporting services but fixed them by entering a node in the rspolicy.config file. If this is the case here - which .config file should i modify...machine.config?

Calling Managed CLR Procedure From Inside User Defined Function -- How To ?

May 15, 2008

I have several UDFs created. Inside one of the UDFs I need to execute a dynamic SQL statement and then take that result and do something else with it, before returning the final value.

I know you can not execute a stored proce from inside a function. I also know you can not use the EXEC statement.

I did read that you could use an external stored procedure and/or managed CLR procedures inside a function.

I have created a managed procedure CLR (C#) that simply executes a passed statemetn and returns the value to the calling routine. I have this all coded and is working fine.

However, I am struggling with knowing how to call this CLR procedure from inside my function, seeing how I can not use EXEC statement.

Any advice on how to do this?

Thanks,
Bruce

How To Determine, Inside A Function, If A Linked-server-query Returned Results

Feb 13, 2004

Hi, have configured an ODBC linked server for an Adaptive Server Anywhere (ASA6.0) database.
I have to write a function (not a procedure) that receives a number (@Code) and returns 1 if it was found on a table in the linked server, or 0 if not. Looks very simple...
One problem, is that the queries on a linked-server must be made through the OPENQUERY statement, which doesen't support dynamic parameters. I've solved this making the whole query a string, and executing it, something like this:

SET @SQL='SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(CAT_ASA, ''SELECT code FROM countries WHERE code=' + @Code + ''')'
EXEC sp_executesql @SQL

(CAT_ASA is the linked-server's name)

Then, i would use @@ROWCOUNT to determine if the code exists or not. But before this, a problem appears: sp_executesql is not allowed within a function (only extended procedures are allowed).
Does somebody know how to make what i want?? I prefer to avoid using temporary tables.
Thanks!

Using A UDF To Return Values For A Dynamic WHERE IN () Clause

Mar 2, 2006

Greetings,

I've search around quite extensively on the net and found a few examples that touch on this subject, but the only definitive one that seemed to solve this problem used a temp table in the UDF, which, to my knowledge, is impossible...

The problem is thus:
I want to create either a stored procedure or a user defined function to return a list of values I can intersperse to use in a WHERE AccountID IN (<values>). This way, if someone were to create a new stored procedure and they wanted to either only select accounts with those IDs or perform a NOT IN and use it to filter.

The Solution I'm attempting:
My idea is best represented in psuedo-code:
- Create a Function that stores all account Ids we relate to a particular account type, in this case, let's say accountsids "100, 101, 102, 407" are all accounts we want to consider "cash".
- The function would look something like:
CREATE FUNCTION CashAccountIDs()

RETURNS TABLE

AS

BEGIN
DECLARE TABLE @t1 (account INT)
INSERT INTO @t1 VALUES (100)
INSERT INTO @t1 VALUES (101)
INSERT INTO @t1 VALUES (102)
INSERT INTO @t1 VALUES (407)
RETURN @t1
END

Then I could call this function by doing something such as:

SELECT *
FROM Accounts
WHERE AccountId IN (dbo.CashAccountIds())

I would presumably do this for other collections of accounts as well, so that I would end up with say 5 functions I could call to filter various types of accounts.

Not too certain if I am approaching this the correct way or not, I've been receiving a myriad of errors trying different methods. If I use the function above it tells me "Must declare @t1", so I modified it so @t1 is declared in the RETURNS statement, and the syntax checks then work, but when I attempt to save the function it tells me "Cannot perform alter on fn_cashaccountids because it is an incompatible object type"

(The code I use to generate this error is:
CREATE FUNCTION fn_cashaccountids ()

RETURNS @t1 TABLE (i INT)

AS

BEGIN
INSERT INTO @t1 VALUES (100)
RETURN
END

Hopefully I've provided enough but not too much info to sift through, it seems to me this would be something encountered a bit before.

Any help is very much appreciated.

- Jeff

Dynamic SQL Return Table Variable

Nov 2, 2007

Is it possible in SQL 2000 to return a table variable from dynamic sql? We need to have some code that looks kind of like this:

declare @qry varchar(8000)
declare @sourcetable varchar(100) -- name of source table
declare @mytable table (ID_Num int identity(1,1), Child_Key varchar(100))

set @sourcetable = (select tablename from tblConfig where app = 1)

set @qry = 'insert into @mytable

select * from @sourcetable'

execute (@qry)

if (select count(*) from @mytable) > 0
begin

'insert into myFinalTable

select * from @mytable where blah blah blah

I can get the first part to work by declaring the table variable (mytable) in the dynamic sql, but I can't figure out how to return the table object.

Function Return Value

Jun 13, 2004

I want to write a function that returns the physical filepath of the master database for its MDF and LDF files respectively. This information will then be used to create a new database in the same location as the master database for those servers that do not have the MDF and LDF files in the default locations.

Below I have the T-SQL for the function created and a test query I am using to test the results. If I print out the value of @MDF_FILE_PATH within the funtion, I get the result needed. When making a call to the function and printing out the variable, all I get is the first letter of the drive and nothing else.

You may notice that in the function how CHARINDEX is being used. I am not sure why, but if I put a backslash "" as expression1 within the SELECT statement, I do not get the value of the drive. In other words I get "MSSQLData" instead of "D:MSSQLData" I then supply the backslash in the SET statement. I assume that this has something to do with my question.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

HERE IS T-SQL FOR THE FUNCTION
IF OBJECT_ID('fn_sqlmgr_get_mdf_filepath') IS NOT NULL
BEGIN
DROP FUNCTION fn_sqlmgr_get_mdf_filepath
END
GO

CREATE FUNCTION fn_sqlmgr_get_mdf_filepath (
@MDF_FILE_PATH NVARCHAR(1000)--Variable to hold the path of the MDF File of a database.
)
RETURNS NVARCHAR
AS

BEGIN

--Extract the file path for the database MDF physical file.
SELECT @MDF_FILE_PATH = SUBSTRING(mdf.filename, CHARINDEX('', filename)+1, LEN(filename))
FROM master..sysfiles mdf
WHERE mdf.groupid = 1

SET @MDF_FILE_PATH = SUBSTRING(@MDF_FILE_PATH, 1, LEN(@MDF_FILE_PATH) - CHARINDEX('', REVERSE(@MDF_FILE_PATH)))

RETURN @MDF_FILE_PATH

END

HERE IS THE TEST I AM USING AGAINST THE FUNCTION
SET NOCOUNT ON

DECLARE
@MDF_FILE_PATH NVARCHAR(1000)--Variable to hold the path of the MDF File of a database.

SELECT @MDF_FILE_PATH = dbo.fn_sqlmgr_get_mdf_filepath ( @MDF_FILE_PATH )
PRINT @MDF_FILE_PATH

Transact SQL :: Use Dynamic Table Names And Get Return Value From The Query

Sep 16, 2015

I don't know why this is so difficult. What I want to do is take a table name as a parameter to build a query and get an integer value from the result of the query. But from all of the research I have been doing, Dynamic SQL is bad in SQL server because of SQL Injections. But my users are not going to be supplying the table names.

Things I have learned:

 - SQL Functions cannot use Exec to execute query strings.
 - SQL Functions can return a concatenated string that could be used by a stored procedure to Exec the query string.

So how can I write a stored procedure that will

1. take a parameter
2. Pass the parameter to a function that will return a string
3. Execute that string as SQL
4. Get a return value from that SQL statement
5. Then finally, from a View, how can I pass a parameter to the stored procedure and get the returned value from the stored procedure to be used as a field in the View?

Numbers 3, 4, and 5 are where I am really stuck. I guess I don't know the proper syntax and limitations of SQL Server.

Return @@identity For Another Function

May 14, 2004

What I'm trying to do is provide a solution where users can upload an image and a description, to a database, so I'm trying to insert the title and description then return the @@identity for the image upload function which will name the image like this
image_23.jpg (23 being the @@identity) resize it and save it to specified directory

I cant seem to get the identity to return to my script.
This is my SP

CREATE PROCEDURE SP_Insertad
(
@catid int,
@subcatid int,
@areaid int,
@uid int,
@adtitle varchar(255),
@addescription varchar(1000)
)

AS
Insert Into Tbl_ad
(ad_title, ad_description,ad_area,ad_ui_id,ad_active,ad_date,ad_ct_id,ad_sc_id,ad_location)
VALUES
(@adtitle,@addescription,@areaid, @uid, 0,convert(varchar, GETUTCDATE(), 101), @catid, @subcatid, 1)

select @@identity
return
GO

I tested in query analyser, and it works fine, so It must be my code. this is my function

Sub Insert_pic(sender as object, e as eventargs)

Dim catid = Request.form("ddcats")
Dim subcatid = Request.form("subcatrad")
Dim adtitle = Request.Form("txttitle")
Dim AdDescription = Request.form("txtdescription")
Dim uid = getUID(Context.User.Identity.Name)
Dim areaid = Request.form("ddarea")
SQLConnect = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.Appsettings("mydB"))

SQLCommander = New SQLCommand("SP_INSERTad", SQLConnect)

SQLCommander.Commandtype = Commandtype.StoredProcedure

SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@adtitle", adtitle)
SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@addescription", addescription)
SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@catid", catid)
SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@subcatid", subcatid)
SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@uid", uid)
SQLCommander.Parameters.add("@areaid", areaid)

'// this section not working right, it wont write return id

Dim paramreturn as SQLParameter
paramreturn = SQLCommander.Parameters.Add("ReturnValue", SQLDBType.Int)
ParamReturn.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

response.write(SQLCommander.Parameters("ReturnValue").Value)

SQLConnect.open()
SQLCommander.ExecuteNonQuery()
SQLConnect.close()

End sub

Can anybody see anything I missing? I appreciate any imput
