SELECT Statement That Assign Value To Local Variable

Nov 12, 2013

I am trying to figure out a way to retrieve a field value and assign it to a local variable with out destroying the whole structure of my T-SQL statement.

Here is the code:

DECLARE @AVERAGE_WHOLESALE_PRICE VARCHAR(20)
DECLARE @ORDERBY VARCHAR(20)
SELECT TOP 1 @AVERAGE_WHOLESALE_PRICE = P.NPT_PRICEX,
CASE NPT_TYPE
WHEN '07' THEN 1
WHEN '09' THEN 2

[Code] ....

The error message is
Msg 141, Level 15, State 1, Line 3
A SELECT statement that assigns a value to a variable must not be combined with data-retrieval operations.

How to modify this statement?

How Do I Assign A String To A Parameter I'm Passing To A Select Statement?

Oct 30, 2006

Hello, I'm needing to pass a variable length number of values to a select statement so I can populate a result list with items related to all the checkboxlist items that were selected by the user.  for example, the user checks products x, y and z, then hits submit, and then they see a list of all the tests they need to run for each product. I found a UDF that parses a comma delimited string and puts the values into a table.  I learned how to do this here: http://codebetter.com/blogs/darrell.norton/archive/2003/07/01/361.aspx I have a checkboxlist that I'm generating the string from, so the string could look like this: "1,3,4,5,7" etc.I added the function mentioned in the URL above to my database, and if I understand right, I should be able to pass the table it creates into the select statement like so:
WHERE (OrderStatus IN ((select value from dbo.fn_Split(@StatusList,','))) OR @StatusList IS NULL) but now I don't know how to assign the string value to the parameter, say to '@solution_id'.my current select statement which was generated by Visual Studio 2005 looks like this: SELECT [test], [owner], [date] FROM [test_table] WHERE ([solution_ID] = @solution_ID) ...but this only pulls results for the first item checked in the checkboxlist.Does anyone know how this is done?  I'm sure it's simple, but I'm new to ASP .NET so any help would be greatly appreciated.

BEGIN
DELETE
tAffiliateMaster

WHERE
affiliate_id = @AffiliateId

SELECT retval = 'Record Deleted', errorcount = 0, 0 AS affiliate_id

END
GO

 My question is how will I be able to return the retval? Will I need to do it within the code behind of the SqlDataSource Updated Event?
 Thanks!

I have 3 web identical web apps whose only diff is that they access different SQl Server DB's. I use the SQLDataSource in a number of pages to retrieve data from the db. The apps all use Forms Auth. I would like to be able to see who is the logged on user user and assign the approp connection string to all the SQLDataSources in the app. For example when user UserA logs in they are retrieving data from on db but when UserB logs in they are retrieving data from another db.
I am sure this can be done but could use a little guidance. Thanks in advance.

How To Dynamically Assign Database Name In Query Or Store Procedure?

Sep 22, 2006

Hello,

I am not sure if this possible, but I have store procedures that access to multiple databases, therefore I currently have to hardcode my database name in the queries. The problem start when I move my store procedures into the production, and the database name in production is different. I have to go through all my store procedures and rename the DBname. I am just wonder if there is way that I could define my database name as a global variable and then use that variable as my DB name instead of hardcode them?

something like

Declare @MyDatabaseName varchar(30)

set @MyDatabaseName = "MyDB"

SELECT * from MyDatabaseName.dbo.MyTable

Any suggestion? Please.

Thanks in advance

Configuring Dynamically An SqlDataSource

I would like to use a single page to manage all Sql Tables on the basis of the name of the specific one invoked by the user.
In order to achieve that, I need to  dynamically configure the SqlDataSource Web Control present on the page for each Sql Table. In particular I need to generate at runtime the InsertCommand and the UpdateCommand.
On how to do it I have no idea.

Dynamically Adding New Parameters To SQLDataSource

Dec 28, 2007

CancelSelectOnNullParameterHi,Suppose I have a SQLDataSource with a
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM STOCKS WHERE USER=@USER ORDER BY STOCK_NAME"
and @USER is set as a session parameter. No problem till this part, but in some postbacks, I wish to add a new WHERE criteria to my SQL, so I do:DSSQL.SelectParameters.Add("@STOCK_NAME", "ABC123");
DSSQL.SelectCommand = DSgvStoklar.SelectCommand.Replace(" ORDER BY ", " AND STOCK_NAME LIKE @STOCK_NAME+'%' ORDER BY ");
gridViewDS.DataBind();
and wish that my SelectCommand is modified and a new parameter is added.
The SQL is modified, however -I guess- new parameter is not added, so I get "Must declare the scalar variable "@STOCK_NAME" error.
How can I solve, any ideas?

Setting SqlDataSource Update Command And Parameters Dynamically C#

Aug 31, 2007

Hello all,
Ok, I finally got my SqlDataSource working with Oracle once I found out what Oracle was looking for. My next hurdle is to try and set the Update Command and Parameters dynamically from a variable or radiobutton list. What I'm trying to accomplish is creating a hardware database for our computers by querying WMI and sending the info to textboxes for insertion and updating. I got that part all working nicely. Now I want to send the Computer name info to a different table column depending on if it is a laptop or desktop. I have been tossing around 2 ideas. A radiobutton list to select what it is and change the SQL parameters or do it by computer name since we have a unique identifier as the first letter ("W" for workstation, "L" for Laptop). I'm not sure what would be easiest but I'm still stuck on how this can be done. I posted this same question in here a few days ago, but I didn't have my SqlDataSources setup like I do now, I was using Dreamweaver 8, it is now ported to VS 2005. Below is my code, in bold is what I think needs to be changed dynamically, basically i need to change DESKTOP to LAPTOP...Thanks for all the help I've gotten from this forum already, I'm very new to ASP.NET and I couldn't do this without all the help. Thanks again!

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:CAT %>"ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:CAT.ProviderName %>" SelectCommand='SELECT * FROM "COMPUTER"' UpdateCommand="UPDATE COMPUTER SET DESKTOP = :DESKTOP, TECH = :TECH, SERVICE_TAG = :SERVICE_TAG WHERE USERNAME=:USERNAME">

Stored Procedures - Using Return Value From Dynamically Created SQL Statement

Jul 29, 2007

Hello,

This is my foray into Stored procedures, so I'm hoping this is a fairly basic question.

I'm writing a stored procedure, in which I dynamically create an SQL statement.
At the end of this, the SQL statement reads like:

Code SnippetSELECT COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger WHERE StockCode = 'STOCK1' AND IsOpen = 1 AND SizeCode = 'L' AND ColourCode = 'RED' AND LocationCode IS NULL AND RemainingQty > 0

Now this statement works a charm, and returns a single value. I want to assign this count to a variable, and use it further on in the stored procedure. This is where the problems start - I cant seem to do it.

If I hard code a statement, like

Code SnippetSELECT @LineCount = COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger
that works fine (although it brings back a count of all the lines).

But if I modify the dynamically created SQL Statement from earlier on to:

Code SnippetSELECT @LineCount = COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger WHERE StockCode = 'STOCK1' AND IsOpen = 1 AND SizeCode = 'L' AND ColourCode = 'RED' AND LocationCode IS NULL AND RemainingQty > 0
it doesnt work - it complains: Must declare the scalar variable "@LineCount".

Just to clarify, when I say "dynamically created an SQL statement, I mean that by a bunch of conditional statements I populate a varchar variable with the statement, and then eventually run it exec(@SQLStatementString)

So, my question would be, how do I do this? How do I make a dynamically generated SQL statement return a value to a variable?

Dynamically Select Column

Sep 29, 2004

Hey all. I'm trying to create a stored proc that will update a variable column, depending on the parameter I pass it. Here's the stored proc:

CREATE PROCEDURE VoteStoredProc
(
@PlayerID int,
@VoteID int,
@BootNumber nvarchar(50)
)
AS

DECLARE @SQLStatement varchar(255)
SET @SQLStatement = 'UPDATE myTable SET '+ @BootNumber+'='+ @VoteID + ' WHERE (PlayerID = '+ @PlayerID +')'

EXEC(@SQLStatement)

GO

I get the following error:

Syntax error converting the nvarchar value 'UPDATE myTable SET Boot3=' to a column of data type int

The update statement is good, because if I use the stored proc below (hard-coded the column), it works fine.

CREATE PROCEDURE VoteStoredProc
(
@PlayerID int,
@VoteID int,
@BootNumber nvarchar(50)
)
AS

UPDATE
myTable
SET
Boot3 = @VoteID
WHERE
PlayerID = @PlayerID
GO

Is there a way to dynamically choose a column/field to select from? Or is my syntax incorrect..?
Thanks!
