Dynamically Changing Configuration File Path
Apr 30, 2008
Before I launch into a long description of the issue, I was wondering whether its possible to dynamically amend the file path held in a configuration string? (I'm looking at the Package Configurations Organizer)
Basically recreating the /CONF switch in the dtexec utility
So a parent package could somehow tell a child package to pull its configuration from a selection of different xml config files at run time... I couldn't see a variable in the child package to set from the former
My only idea at the moment is to replace the Execute Package Task with an Execute Process Task, and directly invoke the child using dtexec & an expression to dynamically set the /CONF switch..
thanks
James

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. Â My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.Â
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

I have a query to pass .csv file data into sql table using bulkinsert . I used :
CREATE TABLE #CSVTest
(CouponCode VARCHAR(200))
/* Insertion From csv Source To Table */
BULK
INSERT #CSVTest
FROM 'C:Apple.csv'
[Code] ....
This worked very fine to me. Now, the thing is i should pass the filename as parameter and so that what ever file i specified in execute command , query should take that file and push that file data from .csv file to sql table.

Is there any way I can configure the Configuration file Path.
I have an understanding that wherever I store my package but my Configuration file(XML) must be store in the place specified in the package. In my dev environment I have C Drive as such the package is in DevServerNameC:SSIS.
However, there is no C drive allocated in Prod envirnment as such package is going to rest in ProdServerName/SSIS
Now if I place my package and execute here and it will look for configuration files(XML) which are on C file path. Then I guess my package fails.
I am just wondering how can I make my package configure file path dynamic?

We are facing some issues with SSIS and thought if you could be of some help.
Actually, instead of Deploying our SSIS projects we copy the SSIS files to a different server from where we execute the SSIS Packages. The reason being, we have a Core Version of the application and this is deployed to different markets and subsequent customisations are performed in the market specific version of the Packages. The problem is although we have a Package Configuration Xml File for our Connection object, the first time when we copy the Packages, we have to manually open each of the Package and change the URL of the Xml File for Configuration. I read through some of the articles on the internet and came to know that the Package Configuration does not support relative path and only absolute path is possible.
Can you please share some of your suggestions on the above problem.

Hi,
I cannot get the log file path read from the configuration.
If the path in the Connection Manager is invalid, package throws an error "SSIS logging provider has failed to open the log" instead of reading it from the config.file. What am I doing wrong?
Here is the portion of the config file. Everthing else is read from the config file correctly.
- <Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Connections[SalesforceConnectLog].Properties[ConnectionString]" ValueType="String"> ConfiguredValue>D:APPSBACIARSalesforceConnectSalesforceConnect.log</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
Appreciate a help.

I have been reading through different posts about how to manage SSIS configuration files across multiple environments. I have seen a few that mention a solution that turns out not to really work (or maybe I€™m doing something wrong); which is what I hope to find out here.
Solutions I am working with:
1: Put the XML Configuration file in the same directory as the SSIS package and only specify the config file name when setting it up in the package. I do not specify a path to the XML Configuration file, just the config file name.
ISSUE: This works when I first create the package and test it without closing down visual studio. Even after deploying the SSIS package and the config file and moving it between environments it works as long as the working directory of the DTExec command is the same directory as the SSIS package and configuration files. The problem comes in after I have closed Visual Studio and opened it again and loaded up the SSIS package. It then gives a bunch of errors stating that it can€™t locate the configuration files€¦. If I could fix this issue, then this would be a solution that I could live with. (I would much rather use a relative path to a different directory but I€™ll live with what I can get). Can anyone solve the issue of Visual Studio 2005 not recognizing the location of the configuration files when only the configuration file name, and not the path is specified?
-- The other odd thing is that I have been able to get this to work consistently with some of my packages but not others. I'm not sure what I did to get those packages to recognize the location of the xml config file.
Thank you in advance for any input and help.

i have created one package which contains flat file source and flat file destin and corres conneciton mgrs.
i created configuration using package configurations with name config.dtxconfig.(while creating it i selected connection string under source file and destination file).
config.dtxconfig contains path as config value for source c:folderfilesourc.txt.and for destination c:folderfiledest.txt
But my req is we have to create another xml named as folderpath.xml should contain the path up to c:folder.for every package execution ssis should access this xml where it should find the folder.
if i want to change the name of folder (or ) move the folder i should change in folderpath.xml only wihout changing folder name in all configuration files.
can i do that.
if not give me alternate solution.plz guide me with clear explanation since i am novice to this tool

Can someone tell me why path to the configuration file couldn't be relative to the package? When I try to use relative path (i.e. do not specify full path to the configuration file) package then run from BIDS looks for configuration file in the solution folder instead of package's folder (project folder).
Is there ane way to force package use same folder to search for caonfiguration files?
Thanks

Hey guys,
I uploaded my website from VWD Express to ipower. My database did not work, which I have learned upon some research should have not been a shock to me, but most definetely was. When I contacted tech support they told my that my web.config files were pointing to my local paths. That I should change them and I should be fine. Elsewhere, in the knowledge base I found the strConnect that I am under the impression I need to use.
strConnect = "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Server=SQL-A1; UID=account_username; PWD=account_password; Database=user_db_name" oSQLServer.Connect strServer,strLogin,strPwd
The problem is, I'm a complete newbie, learning as I go and I can't find anything on where or how I insert this into my web.config to correct my paths. IPower will not help with coding. I know my current connection string is in web.config in the appsettings, that's about as far as my knowledge goes.
So, could anyone show me how I go about putting this into my web.config? Examples are very helpful :]
On a side note, I've been reading that this is a common problem among newbies like myself. So, is changing these files actually going to work, or am I wasting my time? Also, before I get knee-deep into it, is the database-publishing kit put out by MS the way to go here?
Thanks for any and all replies, you guys are always awesome.

We have a SQL Server setup as a publisher to 15 subscribers. We need to change the path of the data & log files to a new drive (added a new harddisk). We plan to take a cold backup of the database and shift the data & log files to the new drive. Then we just attach the data & log files from the new path.
Will this disturb my existing replication Setup?
Is the the correct procedure for changing the path of the existing data & log files?
What is the appropriate method for shifting data & log file of a live database to a different location (directory/drive) ?
thanks in advance

Any ideas?
Thanks.

We have a query in which we have data in fields called TS1Min, TS1Max, TS1Avg, TS2Min, TS2Max, TS2Avg etc.
We have a different table in which we define that vale of TS1, TS2, as an example TS1 might equal RED, TS2 might equal BLUE.
We have written a query that puts TS1Min, TS1Max, TS1Avg, TS2Min, TS2Max, TS2Avg in a temp table #TEMPA
and we also put the values of RED and BLUE in another temp table #TEMPB
now we want to select * from #TEMPA but rename the headings TS1Min to display RED-TS1Min, TS1Max as RED-TS1Max, TS1Avg as RED-TS1Avg etc...
any ideas on how to do this

Hi Everyone,I have a question about dynamically changing the length of a varchar(n)field, in case the value I'm trying to insert is too big and will givea "truncated" error, but before the error is given! i.e. Is there somekind of a way to "test" the length of the field while Inserting thevalue into it, and to have it automatically increase its length to thelength of the value being inserted, in case the value is too big?I've been able to do this in a "primitive" way, simply by identifyingthe specific error number in case the value is being truncated, andthen increasing the length of the varchar(n) field by using the ALTERcommand, and then duplicating the insert statement, but is there astandard (shorter) way of doing this? Here is my code (I'm working in an ASP environment):<%var_txt = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz12345678789"sql = "Insert Into Table1 (text) Values ('" & var_txt & "')"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err = -2147217833 ThenResponse.Write "Error Recognized Successfully!<br /><br />"sql = "ALTER TABLE Table1 ALTER COLUMN text VARCHAR(" &Len(var_txt) &") NOT NULL"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err<>0 ThenResponse.Write "Error while trying to alter Column:<br/>" & err & "= " & err.description & "<br />"ElseResponse.Write "Column altered successfully to: " &Len(var_txt) &"<br />"sql = "Insert Into Table1 (text) Values ('" & var_txt &"')"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err<>0 ThenResponse.Write "<br />Error number 2:<br />" &err.description &"<br />"ElseResponse.Write "Now it was added successfully!HaHa!<br />"End IfEnd IfElseResponse.Write "Success."End If%>Thanks in advance!

In my SSIS package I have a loop container that I am running the same code against 4 servers.
I have the package export the SQL data to an Excel spreadsheet that has multiple tabs.
Is there a way I can change the tab on the fly or do I need to create a Connection for the same spreadsheet 4 times
Each Connection pointing to a different tab?
I tried to set up a expression for the Excel Connection Manager to use the InitialCatalog for the tab and change it
based on the script in the loop however this causes the following error:
An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".
Cannot create an OLE DB accessor. Verify that the column metadata is valid.

Hello. What I'm trying to do should be fairly simple, but after an hour of searching and trials, I can't seem to get it working. When I run my website on my test machine, I would like it to use a certain value for my connectionString. But when it's run on the live server, it should use a different connection string. This way, when it's on the test server it'll use the test database. In my Web.Config file, I have this:<connectionStrings> <add name="myConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=TEST_DB;Initial Catalog=tester;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings>I would like to be able to change the connectionString in something like the Global.asax file, when the application is loaded. I'd check for a certain environment variable, or some other condition, and change the value of the connectionString.I tried this in my Global.asax, but it told me the value was read_only: ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["myConnectionString"].ConnectionString = "Data Source=LIVE_DB;Initial Catalog=live;Integrated Security=True" Does anyone have a good way of doing this, so I don't need to juggle Web.Config files when I publish my site? Thanks.

Does anyone know how to change the task name displayed within a ForEach Loop Container (or of the ForEach Loop Container task itself) based on a variable. I am pretty familiar with setting variable values during task execution and using expressions to alter task properties based on variables. I have tried using an expression to alter the value of the Name property of the ForEach Loop Container but the name of the ForEach Loop Container does not change during execution. Since the color of the various tasks change during execution, I would think that the task names could be changed as well.

I have a scenario where we have to handle dynamically changing source columns.
For example , some times in the source files the number of columns will be increased or decreased, new columns can be added in the middle or in the end of the source file.
How to handle this kind of scenario in the SSIS ?

I originally developed SSIS packages with the destination DB to be SQL Server 2005 for unit testing on my desktop. We are planning on deploying to Oracle. After changing the Provider and other attributes in the configuration file the package loads, however there are lots of issues. The primary one is that the mappings are gone. I'm not sure if that is the result of how the table names are stored "Oracle"."File" versus [SQLSERVER].[File] . Even after attempting to change the way the table names appear I still get the message "the external metadata column is out of sync with the data source columns". Then it lists all of the columns that need to be added.
Is there any way to accomplish this that you are aware of.
Thanks

Often when I open an SCD component that was previously configured I find that the configurations are lost. The "Input Columns" and the "Key Type" columns on the first screen ("Select a Dimension Table and Keys") are blank. The "Dimension Columns" column is still populated.
If I run the package, the SCD component appears to function the way it was configurated to function. However, the settings cannot be viewed.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any ideas why this happens?
Thank you.

Hi all,
I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services and also Toolkit in my system. Following which I cofigured the Reporting Services Configuration.
When I try http://localhost/Reports it throws the following error.

I have tried to search exhaustively for the solution and nothing seems to be crystal clear in solving the above error.
Under Reporting Services Configuraiton Manager (RSCM) all are ticked excepting:
Initialization, SharePoint Integration,Encryption Keys, EMail Settings,Execution Account.
Before this unknowingly I have changed "Windows Service Identity" during configuration which is not the same as Web Service Identity. Under "Web Service Identity" ASP.Net Service Account is listed as <machinename>ASPNET.
Now under "Windows Service Identity" it is selected to "Windows Account" : homequinn. After reading the installation steps it is suggested to have it with "Buil-in Account" ->"Network Services" is recommended. When I try to change it asks me for password and key file. Once I provide it, it is throwing me the following error.

I am having an issue with the File System Task.
I was wondering if there is a way to 'Move File' with the File System Task inside of a For Each Loop container but to dynamically set the Destination path variable.
Currently, this is what I have:
FileDestinationPath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileSourcePath variable - set to C:TestFiles
FileNameAndLocation variable - set to blank
For Each Loop Container €“ Iterates through a folder C:TestFiles that has .txt files in it with dates in the file name. Ex: Test_09142006.txt. Sets the file path (fully qualified) to the Variable Mapping FileNameAndLocation.
Script Task (within For Each Loop, first step) €“ Sets the FileDestinationPath to the correct dated folder within C:TestFiles. For example, if the text files I want to move are for the 14th of September, it takes FileDestinationPath and appends the date folder to the end of it. The text files have a date in the file name (test_09142006.txt) and I am picking this apart (from FileNameAndLocation in the For Each Loop) to get the folder date. (dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value = dts.Variables(€œUser::FileDestinationPath€?).Value & €œ€? Month & €œ_€? & Day & €œ_€? & Year & €œ€?) which gives me €œC:TestFiles 9_14_2006€?.
File System Task (within For Each Loop, second step) €“ This is where the action is supposed to occur. I want it to take the FileDestinationPath and move the FileNameAndLocation file (from the For Loop) into this folder for each run.
Now as for my problem. I want this package to run everyday but it has to set the FileDestinationPath variable dynamically according to that day€™s date. Basically, how do I get this to work since I can€™t hard code the destination path variable from the start? I have the DestinationVariable on the File System Task set to the FileDestinationPath variable, after the script task builds it. However, using FileNameAndLocation as the SourceVariable on my File System Task tells me that the €œVariable €œFileNameAndLocation€? is used as a source or destination and is empty.€?
Let me know if I need to clarify further€¦...I may be missing something very simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have an issue with a DTS package. We create a zip file and then attach it to emails going out using DTS. The problem is that the attachment, when received, is named using the full path to the file, so it is quite long.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way out of this?
I am considering mapping a drive to the share holding the file to be named, but the fact is this will shorten the name but will still result in the path being included.
I am wondering if this is a bug, as I suspect this isn't the default behaviour.
Thank you in advance.
