Dynamically Connecting To Different Database In MSRS 2005
Oct 1, 2007
Hi,
I need to create a MSRS 2005 report which needs to connect to differnt databases at runtime.
1. Can we create a report that connects to different databases at runtime and generate a report.
2. Is there any other way to implement the same using .NET 2.0.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Rajeev

I have a question on the security model for MSRS 2005. I have been working with the permissions for the reporting server folders and reports at my company. Now it seems to me that I can let a user have access to a folder but they will not be able to see any reports that they do not have permissions to see. This would seem different from the Windows Security model where I can see an executable but not actually execute it. (ie. In MSRS the user would be able to see the report but not execute it)
Am I correct in this assumption or is there a way to allow the user to see the report but not execute it using the MSRS permissions.

Hi,
I have been struggling to deploy a custom rendering extension onto
Reporting services 2005. I have followed all the steps given in the
MSDN article
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/05/02/customrenderers/defaul...
Especially -
1. Copied the dll generated to the reporting service bin folder.
2. Made the entry in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.
3Reporting ServicesReportServer
sreportserver.config file as
<Extension Name="CUSTOM_RENDERER"
Type="MSDNMagazine.CustomRSRenderer.Renderer,MSDNMagazine.CustomRSRenderer"/
3. Made an entry in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.
3Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config file as
<CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup" version="1"
PermissionSetName="FullTrust" Name="Custom Render Extension"
Description="This code group grants data extensions full trust.">
<IMembershipCondition class="UrlMembershipCondition" version="1"
Url="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting Services
ReportServerinMSDNMagazine.CustomRSRenderer.dll"/>
</CodeGroup>
I am able to see the extension being listed in the Report manager list
of available rendering options,
But I get the following error from the report server when I try
exporting to the custom rendering extension

Hi all,
In the VB 2005 Express, I can get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString of a Database "shcDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) by the following set of code:
///--CallshcSpAdoNetVB2005.vb--////
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes
Public Class Form1
Public Sub InsertNewFriend()
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
.......................................
etc.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If the Database "shcDB" and the Stored Procedure "sp_inertNewRecord" are in the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express, I plan to use "Data Source=local" in the following code statements to get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString:
.........................
........................
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=local;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
........................
etc.
Is the "Data Source=local" statement right for this case? If not, what is the right code statement for my case?
Please help and advise.
Thanks,
Scott Chang

Hey All,
I am having a problem connecting to a database I have with a java app I am creating for my senior project. I am using the latest MS JDBC for connecting to the SQL Server.
Below is the code I am trying to run:
try {
ds.setIntegratedSecurity(true);
ds.setServerName("localhost\SQLEXPRESS");
ds.setDatabaseName("*databasename*");
con =ds.getConnection();
} catch (Exception ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}
The ds and con variables are declared and initialized correctly. The error I am getting now is this:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "*databasename*" requested by the login. The login failed.
Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong?

I want to use SQL Server to query an Access Database with about 40,000 rows of data. If possible, I don't want to upsize the database because others need acess to it in the ACC97 format. Is there a way to use ODBC to connect to the ACC97 database so that I can use the SQL query capability of SQL server to query the database.
I know access allows you to write some SQL queries but I need the power of the SQL server and now it is a matter of curiosity because I've been searching for this answer for about 8 hours.

I have a very basic console application whose sole purpose is to query a database on the same local computer. When i run the application, i get the error message below:
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'someDomainSomeUserName'.
Below is my connection string also
myconnection_string = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Reporting SystemApp_Datasafetydata.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True").
After some googling, some post pointed to deleting a user folder at :
C:Documents and SettingsmyusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS
but still deleting that folder and restarting the machine doesn't help and i also have remote connections enabled. Help is really needed.
NOTE: The same application runs on a different computer with XP but fails on the Pc with windows server 2003.

I am trying to migrate Reports from MSRS 2000 to (Existing)SSRS 2005. I already have reports in 2005 for diferrent application. I need to add reports which were there in 2000. I don't get any issue if I just download the Report from 2000 and upload them to 2005. The issue I get is that by doing so I loose all the history and subscription which was available with my MSRS 2000 Reports . I cant move the MSRS ReportServer 2000 database as I already have a existing SSRS Report Server Database.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had SQL Server Express Edition installed. I then uninstalled both it and Visual C#. I then installed SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition and reinstalled Visual C# -- both on the same machine. I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. I can select .MSSQLSERVER, but when I click on either OK or Test Connection, I time out with an error message -- error 25 - Connection string is not valid. The connection string that is shown at the bottom of the Advanced dialog box is -- Data Source=.MSSQLSERVER;AttachDbFilename=E:InventoryDataInventory_Data.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True

ok so i have set up SQL server 2005 on a Windows server 2003 machine. I am trying to connect to it via ODBC and/or Visual Studio 2005 on a computer running off the same switch. I have set SQL server to accept remote connections and named pipes as well as had the port unblocked. when i try and connect to it via Vista ODBC wizard or visual studio wizard it says that the server is not there or access is denied.
The server is set up for SQL authentication and i am 100% pos that the username/password i am using is correct. i am at a total loss as to what to do to get my vista machine to talk to that SQL server.

Dear Sir,
We are using VB.NET 2005 (Winform) and the backend SQL Server Express 2005. We would like to connect the Express (.mdf) database from Remote Machine. What type of connection string we have to use?
We tried the following ConnectionString but we got the error:
Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Server=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFileName=S:MLJData.mdf;Database=MLJData;Trusted_Connection=Yes;
Also suggest what are all the prerequisites to run sql server express 2005 database in client machine.
We did installed the following tools in client machine:
1. .NET framework 2.0
2. sqlncli.msi (SQL Server Native Client Setup)
Please provide us the solution for this.

Hi everybody,
I have a problem. When I try to create a database with this code:
strConnection = "server=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI"
objConnection = New SqlConnection(strConnection)
objConnection.Open()
Dim strSQL = "CREATE DATABASE xxxxxx ON PRIMARY"
strSQL += "(Name=test_data, filename = 'xxxxx.mdf', size=3,"
strSQL += "maxsize=5, filegrowth=10%)log on"
strSQL += "(name=mydbb_log, filename='xxxxx.ldf',size=3,"
strSQL += "maxsize=20,filegrowth=1)"
objCommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, objConnection)
objCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
it usually works, except when the name of the database (xxxxxx) contains a number in the beginning of the name or if it is all made up completely by numbers. I also converted the database name into a string, but it doesn't work either.
What is the problem?
How can I solve it?
Thanks in advance

I have a need to create a database, and then populate it. However, thecode below doesn't work as I hoped it might (it creates the table inthe "master" database, which is Not A Good Thing). I know already(thanks Tony!) that if you use Dynamic SQL for the USE command, thenthe subsequent operations need to be Dynamic SQL as well, which is apity since there are over 11,000 lines of it and I don't really fancydebugging it!Does anyone have a cunning plan? In a nutshell, I would like to beable to:1. Create a new database with a derived name - as in the case below aname based on the year, though it might be month as well.2. Create and populate tables in this new database.These operations would ideally be running from a scheduled job.Any thoughts?TIAEdward====================================USE MASTERDECLARE @DBName VARCHAR(123)SET @DBName = 'MyTest_' + CAST((Year(Getdate())) AS Varchar)if not exists(select dbid from master.dbo.sysdatabases where name =@DBName)exec('CREATE DATABASE ' + @DBName)elseraiserror('Database already exists.',3, 1)EXEC ('USE ' + @DBName)if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id =object_id(N'[dbo].[TestTable]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable')= 1)drop table [dbo].[TestTable]GOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestTable] ([TestID] [int] NOT NULL ,[Description] [varchar] (50) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GO

Is this valid in SQL 2005 Express Edition? Or should I change the connection string instead? Thank you very much.

To be clear:
You have a store procedure and inside you make Updates or Inserts against another Server. But that name can change and I dont want to change it manually in everyplace.
Per example:
SELECT *
FROM Himalaya.DBName.dbo.tblUserGroup
WHERE fldUserID = 7300
I have several Selects, Updates and Inserts pointing to that server.
What I can do if I want to change from Himalaya server to another server?
The same with the Database Name.
Thank you

I am writing Stored Procedures on our SQL 2005 server that will link with data from an external SQL 2000 server. I have the linked server set up properly, and I have the Stored Procedures working properly. My problem is that to get this to work I am hardcoding the server.database names. I need to know how to dynamically specify the server.database so that when I go live I don't have to recompile all of my stored procedures with the production server and database name. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?
EXAMPLE:
SELECT field1, field2 FROM mytable LEFT OUTER JOIN otherserver.otherdatabase.dbo.othertable
OBJECTIVE:
Replace 'otherserver.otherdatabase.dbo.othertable' with some other process (dbo.fnGetTable('dbo.othertable')????)

Hello,
I am not sure if this possible, but I have store procedures that access to multiple databases, therefore I currently have to hardcode my database name in the queries. The problem start when I move my store procedures into the production, and the database name in production is different. I have to go through all my store procedures and rename the DBname. I am just wonder if there is way that I could define my database name as a global variable and then use that variable as my DB name instead of hardcode them?
something like
Declare @MyDatabaseName varchar(30)
set @MyDatabaseName = "MyDB"
SELECT * from MyDatabaseName.dbo.MyTable
Any suggestion? Please.
Thanks in advance
