Dynamiclly Setting Excel Connection String Issue
Nov 9, 2007
I have a folder of excel files with different file names and sheet names inside the file. So File A could have Sheet1A and file B could have Sheet2B.
The assumption is that the sheets would have similar data in them for all files even though sheet names are different. I was able to dynamically create the excel connection string using a for loop and choosing the Data Access mode of the excel source to be Table name or View name variable. I have run into a "[DTS.Pipeline] Error: "component "Excel Source" (1)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA".
Was wondering if anybody was able to play in such a scenario and resolve the issue.
By the way a lot of the posts in this blog helped me get this far so thanks for all the posts.

I am trying to set the connection string in a connection manager at runtime. Here is what I have done:
1. Created a gv_DataSource, gv_Username and gv_Password
2. Created a ForEach Loop that reads DataSource, Username and password values from a variable (it is an For Each ADO loop Enumerator). The ADO recordset is read into by an Execute SQL task before the loop.
3. Mapped values from the recordset to variable in the ForEach loop's "Variable Mappings" page.
4. Used the variables in my Sybase OLEDB Connection Manager's "Expression" property, setting the "ConnectionString" property to:
"Data Source=" + @[User::gv_DataSource] + ";User ID=" + @[User::gv_Username] + " ;Password=" +
@[User::gv_Password] + ";Initial Catalog=blue;Provider=Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider.2;Persist Security Info=True;"
5. I set the values in my database table for the connection-I set 2 connections for which I have Sybase OLEDB datasources setup.
When I run the package, I just get the first server's data twice, it doesn't set the second server's data during the second loop. I made sure the first one was working (i.e. the ConnectionString's property was being set by the data from the current variables) by setting the variables incorrectly in the variable properties page, and then running the package. So the first row of connection information is working, but the second loop around it doesn't seem to be working. I used a msgbox in a script task to show that the variables are mapping correctly in the loop, so it seems the second time around the connection information isn't taking from the variables.
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks,
Kayda

I need to make my site aware of which server_name it is loading from so it uses a different connection string. (have dev + prod servers for web/sql)Currently my connection string is in web.config as follows: <connectionStrings> <!-- Development and Staging connection string --> <add name="myconnection" connectionString="server=myserver; user id=mysuer; password=mypassword; database=mydatabase" /> </connectionStrings> I need to make sure the 'name' is the same for both connection strings since that is how the rest of my site looks for it. However, I'm not sure how to get both in here with some sort of 'if/then' statement to determine which one to use.I've heard it could be done in global.asax with something similar to the code below, but I dont know how to assign a 'name' to a connection string for that type of setup. Sub
Session_OnStart ServerName =
UCase(Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME")) IF ServerName = "prod.server.com" THEN ...Set Prd string... ELSE ...Set Dev string... END IF End

This method has worked beautifully for all my SSIS pkgs thus far.
Basically, I use a Script Task to derive the name of the newest file in a local directory. Then I save the name of the file to user a user variable, e.g. User::File.
Then, in my flat file properties > Expressions, I set "ConnectionString" to reference User::File.
However, when attempting to use this method with an Excel source, I get this error message:
Error at myPkg [Connection manager "Excel Connection Manager"]: The connection string format is not valid. It must consist of one or more components of the form X=Y, separated by semicolons. This error occurs when a connection string with zero components is set on database connection manager.
Error at myPkg: The result of the expression "@[User::Folder]+ @[User::File]" on property "ConnectionString" cannot be written to the property. The expression was evaluated, but cannot be set on the property.
HELP......... I need this to work!
Thanks

I currently have the following connection string set up in Excel to connect to my SQL db:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=XXXXXX;Initial Catalog=YYYYY;Data Source=SQL;Use Procedure for Prepare=1;Auto Translate=True;Packet Size=4096;Workstation ID=PROJMNT1;Use Encryption for Data=False;Tag with column collation when possible=False
What I would like to do is replace the Workstation ID (which apparently is hard coded?) so that the user's workstation name pulls (%COMPUTERNAME%) so that I can see who is connecting, using what, for how long etc etc.
Is there anyway to accomplish this?

We have set up Mirroring with a witness server and everything works fine when we failover from the SQL Management console.
However, if we failover when our Maccola client is connected, the client blows up - clearly because it can no longer connect to the database.
The ODBC DSN used by the Maccola client shows a checkbox for the 'select a failover server' but the checkbox is grayed out.
Also the summary of settings for the DSN at the end of the wizard reveals that the failover to server (y/N) option is set to N.
The default setting for this DSN is 'populate the remaining values by querying the server' but it doesn't appear to be getting the settings for failover from the server or any other interactive DSN settings either. The server is clearly set for mirroring.
Another suspicious item is that the DSN cannot connect to the server with SA permissions, even though the server is set to mixed security and we use the correct authentication.
Is it possible that the client MACHINE is not authenticating with the domain or sql server properly. We are logged into the client with the domain account that is the SQL admin account on the sql server box.
We should be able to interact with the sql server settings through the ODBC DSN on the client shoulnd't we?
Are we missing a service pack on the client?
Thanks,
Kimball

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?

I have a results table that was created from many different sources in SSIS. I have done calculations and created derived columns in it. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to remove duplicate rows from this table without first writing it to a temp sql table and then parsing through it to remove them.
each row has a like key in a column - I would like to remove like rows keeping specific columns in the resulting row based on the data in this key field.
Ideas?
Thanks,

Hi,
I have a main report with some sub reports. I put the sub reports in a rectangle and selected insert page break before on the rectangles.
If I run the main report and then select export to excel the sub reports are called Sheet1, sheet2, sheet3
How can I change those sheet names ?
I tried setting the bookmark, label and tooltip but no luck.
If I only export 1 report, the name of the sheet is the name if the report.
So how can I fix this ?

Hi,I am having problems setting the value of a variable in a SQL Stringthat I have to create dynamically in my procedure. The code that Icurrently have is as follows:set @sqlStatement='Set @compare_string=' + '(Select ' +@group_column_list_mod + ' from ' + @Tbl_Name + '_Sorted' + ' whereIdentity_Column=' + ltrim(rtrim(str(@loop_counter))) + ')'exec(@sqlStatement)The error message that I get is as follows:Must declare the variable '@compare_string'.Here @compare_string has already been declared in the procedure and Idon't have a problem using the variable anywhere else but this SQLStatement (when called using the EXEC function).I am not sure why SQL Server can't see the variable declared when usedin a string in conjunction with EXEC. Is this a syntax issue? Any helpon this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

However, when the same report is exported to an Excel document, the row height is fixed and the content in the cells are partially hidden.
Is there anyway to get Excel report generator to recognize the CanGrow setting?

Hi all,
Please advise which kind of connection should be establish from excel 95 to MS SQL Server.
From my thought, I understand that the connection depends on Windows version rather than excel version.
Thus, I just think that there will not be any issue connecting to SQL Server from Excel 5.0a.
Kindly advise if there is any addtional point to concern/consider further.
What could be issue connecting to SQL Server 2005 from Excel 5.0a.

Hello,
I'm trying to set the default value of a column (SysInvNum) in a table (caseform) of mine by concatenating 3 other fields in the same table. These other fields are all Integer datatypes. they are "CaseYear" e.g. (2005), "InvNum" e.g. (0001) and "PostId" e.g. (5).
So basically the SysInvNum column for this row should read '200500015'
When I run a basic query using the CAST or CONVERT functions like this:
SELECT convert (varchar,caseyear) + convert(varchar,InvNum) + convert(varchar,postid) from caseform
OR
SELECT cast(caseyear as varchar(4)) + cast(InvNum as varchar(4)) + cast(postid as varchar(1)) from caseform
I get the results I want. But since I want this value to be the default value of the column, I tried inserting this: convert (varchar, caseyear) + convert(varchar,InvNum) + convert(varchar, postid) into the default value parameter of the column in the caseform table. The result is a string that is the query itself.
I then tried creating a UDF called getsysinvnum() where I declare and set 2 variables whilst returning one of the variables as a varchar. An example of what it looks like is this:
CREATE FUNCTION GetSysInvNum()
RETURNS varchar
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @maxcaseid Int
DECLARE @sysinvnum varchar
SELECT @maxcaseid = max (caseid) from caseform
SELECT @sysinvnum = cast(caseyear as varchar(4)) + cast(invnum as varchar(4)) + cast(postid as varchar(1)) from caseform where caseid = @maxcaseid
RETURN @sysinvnum
END
The result I get when I plug this into the default value of the column as : ([dbo].[getsysinvnum]()) is "2".
Yes it returns the number "2" could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong, or suggest a better way for me to do this?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I'm having a BIG problem, this is my 3rd day looking for answer !I'm trying to create a custom membership provider with MS SQL database 2005 but not the default ASPNETDB. I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". Hi
I currently have an SSIS package which looks for an excel file and uploads its. The connection is set up to look for a file upload.xls in a folder called Upload on the C drive. So each time a file needs uploaded, the upload.xls is copied into C:Upload. This all works fine. However now I need to change it so that the files that are uploaded take the format Upload10012007.xls, so they will have the date appended onto the end of the Upload.
How do I go about setting up my connection to look for Upload10012007.xls? The file name will be dynamic as it will change each day but it will always contain Upload at the start of the filename.
Thanks for your help,
Michael

I have a child package where the ConnectionString property of a Connection Manager is set by a Parent Package Variable Configuration. I set up a script task that brings up a message box with the value of the ConnectionString property right before the dataflow task.
MessageBox.Show(Dts.Connections["CPU_*"].ConnectionString.ToString());When I run the parent package, the message box shows that the connection string is changing with every iteration, but in the dataflow it always draws the data from the same source.
The connection manager is an ADO.Net type, RetainSameConnection is set to False, and I've been researching this for days.
(Update 2/23/2015): To make this stranger, when I look at the diagnostic logs, they tell me that when the new connections are being opened they are using the new connection strings.

This is the first time I have used SSIS, so please bear with the ignorance.
I have a super simple package that inserts x000's of rows into a temporary table. The data source is a file that the user will upload. I need to be able to tell the package what file to upload. I'm thinking the simplest thing would be to edit the connectionString property of the SourceConnectionFlatFile at runtime. Is this possible? What form should the file path be in (UNC, other)? And, are there any other considerations I should be aware of?
Thanks!

I'm looking for some clarification.
We need to pull data from our DB2 system to our Itanium SQL Server.
Is this simply a matter of setting up the 64-bit DB2 Connect drivers on the Itanium box with the exact same DSN name used on ther 32-bit box used to define and deploy the SSIS package?
Has any one done this, yet? If so, is there anything that we need to look our for?
Thanks,

When connecting toSQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact thatunder the default settings SQL Server does not allowremote connections. Can anyone, please tell me what I need to do to get this setup? I triedto dabble with the TCIP and remote setting but nothing worked.Regards

I've mapped a sqlserver machine within vs2005, but when I attempt to set the database connection, I dont see place to stick the port number (even in the advanced area)... it continues to fail when I test the connection.. I can telnet into the machine on the sql server port, so I know its open to me...
Also - when I publish this to an IIS server, what is the syntax for placing the connection and port number in web.config? I've tried various settings, cant get it to work. <appSettings><add key="con" value="Server=12.123.123.123;PORT=1234;UID=*****;PWD=*****;database=mydb" /></appSettings>
Thanks in advance for the help,
Todd

When setting up an ODBC connection on a non-sql Server X and choosing from the drop down menu which SQL Server to connect to, I see two identical names for my SQL Server (Y). No matter which one I choose, Im not able to go to the screen after being asked how I want to log in (SQL server authentication)
If I build a ODBC connection from any other desktop, I only see one SQL Server Y, and am able to establish a connection to SQL Server Y, with the same user account and password as when Im on Server X.
Server X has two network cards and is teamed...could that be a possible problem ?
Any ideas ?...Thank you

I need to set multiple values for some SQL statements, for exampleSET NUMERIC_ROUNDABORT OFFGOSETANSI_PADDING,ANSI_WARNINGS,CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL ,ARITHABORT,QUOTED_IDENTIFIER,ANSI_NULLS ONGOin a .sql file, but would like to reset them to their previous settingsagain for other SQL statements. I didn't find anything in books online. Ithought just calling "set" was enough, but apparently not ....Thanks.

I used to do this in DTS but wondered how to do it in SSIS. I have a For Each ADO recordset loop that reads these four columns into variables:
DataSource Name, Name(for a WHERE clause), user and password.
For each "Building" there is a new server to connect to, with identical tables. I have 10 tables in the loop to pump from one database to a SQL 2005 database (i.e. 10 dataflows). I want to set the source connection information with the variables. My questions:
1. How do I set the connection information for the source connections? Do I just set the properties for the connection manager and then it sets for all the sources? What property do I set--do I need a script task?
2. How do I use the values from the "Name" column in a WHERE clause in each data flow?
Thanks!
Kayda
