I know about @@version and SERVERPROPERTY, but I am looking for a query that will determine between SQL Server 2000 and 2005. I need to write an if/then statement and don't want to have to add all of the 9.xxx.xx versions for 2005 and keep that updated with each hotfix that comes out.

I've looked through many suggestions and partial examples all overthis newsgroup and still am not coming up with anything that doesspecifically what I'm wanting to accomplish.I'm writing a VB 6.0 application which uses SQL Server as theback-end.Here's an example of what I'm wanting to do...A user accessing the VB GUI attempts to open a certain form. Coderuns behind the scenes in VB that checks the user's "Execute"permissions on the stored procedure that retrives the data into theform. If the user is determined to have "Execute" permissions to thatstored procedure, the user is allowed to proceed with opening theform. If they don't have permissions, they are informed of this andaren't allowed to open the form and view the data.Let's say that we initially determine through the VB code that theuser has the ability to "Execute" the stored procedure that allows forviewing of the data. We go ahead and let them open the form. Oncethe form is being opened though, we run VB code to check for theirpermissions on other stored procedure that can be used in UPDATING /INSERTING / DELETING the records being displayed in the form. If theydon't have "Execute" permissions on these particularUpdate/Insert/Delete stored procedures, then I'll have a text box onthe form show as visible to advise them while they're looking at thisdata that they can't do anything to this data other than view it...they can't insert new records, they can't delete any records, and theycan't update any records.I have yet to find specific code that tells me how to checkpermissions on a storedc procedure for the user that's logged-in, whatthe resulting codes (i.e. 12291, etc.) mean as far as identificationof their permissions, etc.If anyone can help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'd hateto just have to resort to trying to allow the user to run the storedprocedures and just trap the error codes that may arise once eachstored procedure is executed and inform the user on the tail-end ofthe process that they can't run the stored procedure. I have a history table which has its an identity field and an identification field which shows what type of history field it is. As in payment, printout, change and so on.... For this field should i use
Full text which has the payment, printout, change and so on and make it easy on the eye and for queries and coded to use the same text all the time
have varchar(2) type of field which holds an understandable field PR, PO, CH and a reference table for it as in PR= PAYMENT, PO = Printout, CH as in change and so on
or have a integer field as in 1, 2, 3 and ref. table 1=payment, 2 = printout, 3=change and so on
I have a address table which holds multiple types of addresses which are really limited count maybe upto 4 different types
have a integer field which links to a reference table as above
have bit fields which can be used to check if it gets in one of the group types
have a full text option like above

Is there any way to restore a database of higher version to lower version.
E.g. I have created a database in sql server 2012, created some tables & procedures in that.I took Full backup of that database. Can I restore it to sql 2008r2 or any lower version.
I know direct restore is not possible, I have to use either import or export option or generating script,but i want to know is there any easy step to do so.

Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.
So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.
Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?

Hello,I have been searching and reading a lots of information on the microsoft website about the different version of SQL server, but still can not make my decision.In term of performance, is there a real big difference between the workgroup and the standard version? The workgroup is limited to 3 GB of RAM while the standard is unlimited, would that really change the performance if my server has 16Gb or RAM?The price difference is pretty substantial so if could only have to buy the workgroup , it would be better.One more question, regarding the type of licence, my server has 2 processors, could I avoid buying 2 licences and get the Server plus CAL instead. I am using this server to host 4 web-application running on SQL server. Each database is about 15 MB.Thanks in adavance for your advises.Arno

The reason is because the Enterprise Evaluation version expires after 180 days. So if I create reports and cubes in Enterprise Evaluation I can import them into Developer Edition right? Should I remove the Enterprise Evaluation version after 180 days or leave it then install Developer Edition?

We have a 64bit os machine that we accidently loaded the 32 bit version of sql server on. We now want to upgrade it to 64 bit sql server, but we now have a production database on it. My understanding is that all I have to do is detach the production database, upgrade to 64bit sql server, then reattach the database. Is this really all I have to do?

I want to retrive the output in a single SQL query.
I had two columns in a table; I used some values of column1 in column2.
I want to identify all the column1 vlaues in Left Hand side and column2 values in Right Hand side, with a single query.
example:

To get the above output, I written query using WHILE...[BREAK|CONTINUE] concept until I get @@rowcount become zero.
I am looking for better performace and to get the output in a single query, instead of multiple passes.

I installed the SQL Server 2k EnterPrise version and developer version on the same version, and the developer version is an instance "Development".
How do I expose both of them to internet? Just open both of them to port 1433? And on the client side, just say IP and IP/Development? Do I need specific set up, will they conflict?

I downloaded the 101 Samples installation (i.e. 101SamplesCS.msi) from Microsoft's website, which contains SQL Server database files.
While working with the databases in the "Data Access" samples from the 101 Samples projects, I get the following error:
"Database <mdf_name> cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (600) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database..."
I assume the database files were created with a beta or CTP version of SQL Server 2005. Does anyone know where I can get an updated version of these database files or scripts to update them?

I installed Visual Studio 2005 and an SQL Server 2000 enterprice.
I called my SQL-Server instance "PALAGSQL". My computer is called "PEARL"
when I try to create a connection in VisualStudio2005 ,I put Server-Name : "PEARL/PALAGSQL"
.......but I receive error 40 "Could not open a connection"
What did I miss ?

Why is SQL Server called 'Server' ? I understand it is a lot more capable and robust than Access but where does 'server' come into it.
I currently use ASP and Access for dynamic websites but it is time to move up a notch.
Do I just buy SQL Server, make a database, upload it to the same place as before and hey presto?

Is there a way to set up the SQL Server Log files so that it automatically creates a new one (or overwrites the old one) when the old one is full?
We keep having people shut out of our web site due to the log file being full. Since we have no DBA I volunteered to try to find out how we can avoid this faux pas in the future.

I have been using SQL Server 2K for a couple of months now and I have been entering data into my tables through Enterprise Manager. I do this by selecting the table, right-clicking on it, and selecting Return All Rows.
After months of use, this method of entering data has become tedious and cumbersome. Is there an easier way to enter data into SQL Server? I don't know how to program Visual Basic, but I know how to create dynamic websites.
Microsoft Access offers the ability to make Forms, so that data entry is easier. Can SQL Server offer anything similar? Maybe SQL Server 2005 offers a GUI for data entry?

I think this is probably an easy question for you. I have installed MSDE and
SS Desktop Edition on two different machines (Windows 98). Each time I try
to look at the Properties menu for SS Agent in Enterprise Manager, EM hangs.
I installed Service Pack 2 on one machine, but that did not fix the problem.
Also if I change SA password to something other than the default, SS Agent
will not start. It only starts with the default password; shouldn't I change
this for security reasons. I have SS7 running on another Windows NT box with
none of these problems.

What are the easiest methods to set up a relational database?
Are there any tools you can download to give SQL Server or the express version functionality similar to Access?
Can you get a tool to allow you to not only design tables in design view but then go on to create relationships and a database model?
Please excuse my ignorance if this is possible already, can anyone provide any links to getting started links?
There seems to be plenty out there about writing queries and stored procedures etc. but I haven't found as much about setting up a database from scratch.

I have an ssis package that downloads a SQL Server 2000 database and restores it to a SQL 2005 server. Ninety-five percent of the time it runs just fine, but every so often the job fails and I get the following set of error messages in the log file. (I have had to delete some of the proprietary information for this message to satisfy my boss like putting in [Database name] in place of the actual name of the database in the error message).

I have received the error message "Package migration from version 8 to version 6 failed".I have developed a SSIS package with Visual Studio 2013 which gives me PackageFormatVersion of 8. I then deploy my package to the ssisdb catalog that is running on a SQL Server 2012, this works fine but when I try to execute the package the error arises…due to SQL Server 2012 has a PackageFormatVersion of 6 and it can’t run something that has a greater version.I haven’t seen any good solution for this but one that would work for me would be to upgrade the Integration Services Server from 2012 to 2014, leaving everything else in 2012 (database, ssms, ssas, ssrs).Would this solve the package format problem? Would I then be able to execute my packages in the ssisdb catalog?

I have SQL Server on a production machine that I backed up and want to test a full restore on a dev machine to make sure it will work when I need it to.
Now that I've run the restore command on my tape backup and go to restart the SQL server service I receive:
Configuration block version 0 is not a valid version number. SQL Server is exiting. Restore the master database or reinstall.
I'm afraid I don't understand why this is happening. If the builds are the same, then shouldn't restoring the MASTER database have worked normally and I'd be able to restart the service now?
Any thoughts or suggestions?
I have the trial version of SQL Server 2005 installed and have setup a couple of databases. This trial version will expire in another few weeks. I recently purchased a copy of the software and want to install it. Will I lose my databases, user info, etc? How do I go about installing without losing anything?

I started this thread as the last attempt to sort the issue out.
I have an SSIS package that loads data from a .csv file into my database. It works fine on my developer machine. I start it programmatically or from Management Studio or from Visual Studio, and it works. Then I deploy it to the MSDB database on the computer on which it will have its final place. There again I can start it from Management Studio or from Visual Studio (using the source file), and it works. But when I start it programmatically, it just fails telling me:

Maybe the source of the problem is that this machine is a 64-bit one, while the developer machine is 32-bit one. But why does the package run fine when I start it from Management Studio?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy company wants me to research and flags or registry tricks that would allow non-ansi joins '=*' and '*=' in SQL Server 2005 with a compatiblity mode of 90 to be allowed.
The way I understand the situation is that in SQL Server 2005 with the database compatiblity set to 90, non-ansi join SQL such as the following would not work.
Select * from
Customer, Sales
Where Customer.CustomerID *= Sales.CustomerID
To work, the SQL above would have to be converted to ansi join SQL such as the following:
Select * from
Customer LEFT OUTER JOIN Sales
On Customer.CustomerID = Sales.CustomerID
Many hours would be spent browsing through millions of lines of code to find the non-ansi SQL and have changes made.
Does anyone know of any trace flaqs or registry entries that would allow SQL Server 2005 work in 90 compatiblity and still allow non-ansi =* and *= joins in SQL?

I have written a script to GENERATE Random Password. But I want to modify that to a some kind of password which is little easy to remember!

Is there an easy way to compare the contents of objects between 2 different databases? For example, say I had 2 databases, My_DB_1 and My_DB_2, each with a SEC_User table. Say I wanted to do an object-to-object comparison between databases to see if there were any differences. Here's some sample SQL:
use My_DB_1
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')
use My_DB_2
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')
Say that the result sets above both returned a SEC_GetUser sproc object ref. Is there a way to write SQL that will compare the SEC_GetUser sprocs (and other objects in the above rowsets) from both databases? For example, if My_DB_1.SEC_GetUser returns an extra column in the result set than My_DB_2.SEC_GetUser then I'd like my comparison SQL to return a single column "IsDifferent" with SEC_GetUser as a row....
