Easy Way To Find Connection Leaks?
Jan 15, 2004
I, just like others, am experiencing problems with data leaks. I was wondering if anyone knows of a tool out there that can help pinpoint the pages with problems? I basically want to find the culprits!
Thanks,

Hi ,
I have two tables within a SQL database. The 1st table has an identified column and column which lists one of more email identifers for a second table,
e.g.
ID Email
-- ----------
1 AS1 AS11
2 AS2 AS3 AS4 AS5
3 AS6 AS7
The second table has a column which has an email identifier and another column which lists one email address for that particular identifier, e.g.
ID EmailAddress
--- ------------------
AS1 abcstu@emc.com
AS2 abcstu2@emc.com
AS3 abcstu3@emc.com
AS4 abcstu4@em.com
AS5 abcstu5@emc.com
AS6 abcstu6@emc.com
AS7 abcstu7@emc.com
AS11 abcstu8@emc.com
I need to create a stored procedure or function that:
1. Selects an Email from the first table, based on a valid ID,
2. Splits the Email field of the first table (using the space separator) so that there is an array of Emails and then,
3. Selects the relevant EmailAddress value from the second table, based on a valid Email stored in the array
Is there any way that this can be done directly within SQL Server using a stored procedure/function without having to use cursors?
Many Thanks,

Folks
I have gotten two 614 error messages over the past two weeks. I also have a known memory leak problem on my production server. After I have identified the data on the page, I have gone back to requery that page and have not had a problem. I am unable to run checkdb on the db, because it is to big, and I am 24x7. My question/assumption is, the data on this page gets loaded into cache, and because of the memory leaks I am getting glitches like this, has anybody out there, had this type of problem?
From BOL Error 614 is as follows:
Message Text
A row on page %Id was accessed that has an illegal length of %d in database `%.*s`.
Explanation
This error occurs when an attempt is made to access a row on a page and the actual length of the row is greater than expected. The error indicates that there is a structural problem on the database page accessed during a read or write operation, and it involves a specific row from that page.
This structural problem can occur as a result of the following:
·Hardware problem related to but not limited to the hard drive, controller, or the controller`s implementation of write caching
·A structural problem determined when loading a database dump; it may indicate a integrity problem with the database dump file

Howdy folks!
I'm trying the VS2005 addon Deleaker for the first time, and noticed I got about 40 "heap" memory leaks after the following m_pICmdText->Execute() call. Both m_pICmdText and m_pICmdPrepare are released before exiting the program. What else could cause these leaks? I've narrowed it down to only occuring if the execute statment is called. m_ulNumExecutions is 1 and a_pwszQuery is a CREATE TABLE statement:
// Set command sql query
hr = m_pICmdText->SetCommandText(DBGUID_SQL, a_pwszQuery);
CHKHR(hr, L"Failed to set command text", _ExitExeSql);
// Prepare command text for execution
hr = m_pICmdPrepare->Prepare(a_ulNumExecutions);
CHKHR(hr, L"Failed to prepare command text - Invalid Query", _ExitExeSql);
for(ULONG i=0;i<a_ulNumExecutions;i++)
{
//Execute query and place results in m_pIRowset
hr = m_pICmdText->Execute(NULL, IID_IRowset, NULL, NULL, (IUnknown **) &m_pIRowset);
CHKHR(hr, L"Failed to execute SQL", _ExitExeSql);
}
Thanks!

Hi,
I have one application in two different companies with MSSQL2000 running on Windows2000 Server and Windows2003 Server.
It seems that memory needed for MSSQL2000 as displayed in task manager is increased every day.
Does anybody knows anything regarding memory leaks in MSSQL2000?
How can I find what version of service pack have I installed in a MSSQL2000 server machine?

Manolis

We have created a multithreaded application that reads result sets from MS SQL Server (both 2000 and 2005). The MS SQL Server app and our app reside on the same machine. We are using the latest version of ODBC32.DLL (3.526.1830.0) and SQLSRV32.DLL (2000.86.1830). Our application is written in C++ using the Visual C++ 6.0 compiler and libraries. Our app runs as a service, therefore the apparent memory leak is a real problem. Our app needs to run on a server in a closet without human intervention.
We are kicking off many user threads that each can read from the database tables. Each of the reads from the database occurs within a critical section to minimize the threads stepping on each other. The ODBC interface class follows all the steps defined in the ODBC application developers documention (see code below).
We see or app memory steadily increasing over time (we used PerfMon to monitor Private Bytes and Virtual Bytes, per ODBC documentation). If we terminate the threads which are retreiving the result sets, the memory drops back to the level noted prior to starting the threads.
The code below is admittedly inefficient, however, it should not leak memory when accessing the database. Note that it works very well, returns the result sets that we expect exactly.

Ok, lets see if I can put what I am looking for into words.
I run a MSSQL server, I show in my logs that a connection is being made to my server from a remote ip. I have contact the owner of the ip in question and they state that they have no buisness with us and they should not be connected to us. According to netstat the connection to us is established on 2 different remote ports to 1433. My question, is there any logging on sql that I can turn on, look at to see what database this connection is accessing? Thanks

I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this posting. Looking at the descriptions, it appeared to be the best choice.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed the SQL Native Client for
XP. However, when I try to add a new data source through ODBC Connection
Manager, SQL Native Client is not listed as an option. I have followed this procedure on three other systems with no problems. What would be causing the
SQL Native Client to not show up in the list of available ODBC data sources?

I tried all the INFORMATION_SCHEMA on SQL 2000 andI see that the system tables hold pretty much everything I aminterested in: Objects names (columns, functions, stored procedures, ...)stored procedure statements in syscomments table.My questions are:If you script your whole database everything you end up havingin the text sql scripts, are those also located in the system tables?That means i could simply read those system tables to get any informationI would normally look in the sql script files?Can i quickly generate a SQL statement of all the indexes on my database?I read many places that Microsoftsays not to modify anything in those tables and not query them since theirstructure might change in future SQL versions.Is it safe to use and rely the system tables?I basically want to do at least fetching of information i want from thesystem tables rather than the SQL script files.I also want to know if it's pretty safe for me to make changes in thesetables.Can i rename an object name for example an Index name, a Stored Procedurename?Can i add a new column in the syscolumns table for a user table?Thank you

I'm banging my head against the wall. It's probably pretty simple so here goes...
I have a form that supposed to add records to a table on the database. I'm pretty sure I have the dataAdapter and Dataset set right but when I add a record, it complains that the primary key can’t be null. I’ve tried different things, including removing those fields and variables from the stored Proc, changing the Identity Properties of the Table, changing the AutoIncrement settings on the Dataset for that field, but all give me different errors. Nothing actually makes it work. This database has many records in it and the Primary key is a decimal field that starts at 5, then next was 10, then 28, then it started getting consecutive after 110. (111, 112, 113, etc.) (I'm porting over an old database to a new web site, so I'm somewhat contrained by the database.)
I guess my question is for adding records in to a database that has a primary unique key constraint. Certainly this is a pretty common thing. Obviously I do not want users to enter that in themselves, I thought it should simply autocreate/autonumber. So what is the best procedure and gotcha’s I need to watch out for?

I have written 2 custom connection mgr€™s.
One connects the data from an oracle source
One connects so I can put the data on a sql server.
These both work well and it makes it a lot easier across development, test, production.
But now I would like a good way to do this
I have 10 tables to copy from oracle. The only difference is just the name of the table.
static string[] g_tables =
{
"table_name_1",
"table_name_2",
"table_name_3",
€¦
};
foreach (string str_table in g_tables)
{
Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand OracleCommand = new Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand
(
"select * from " + str_table,
OracleConnection
);
Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataReader OracleDataReader =
OracleCommand.ExecuteReader();
// dump out to raw file destination
}
I understand there are some pieces left out but that is the basic idea. It seems like I€™m going to have write custom pieces for each step.
It does not seem like there is any advantage to using SSIS. Should I give up now and stick to writing windows services for stuff like this?
I could just write a specific piece for each table but the only difference is the table name.

I have a column in my report that i want to show percentage change from the previous year to this year. So i enter all kinds of different type of formats for the formula, and keep getting the wrong answers or error messeges. Here's what i have tried recently:
=SUM((Fields!LYTD_Amount.Value - Fields!YTD_Amount.Value) (Fields!YTD_Amount.Value*100))
Its pretty much Last year to date Minues Year to Date , Divided by Year to Date, Multiplied by 100.
any suggestions? Everytime i try to put an aggregate in the box, its always tricky.

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
Is this an intrinsic issue?
